gunfire which killed a police officer and a court employee. it comes amid a record surge in the number of police officers shot on the job in the kansas city suburb of independence, missouri. a procession of police officers escorted the body of one of their own to the medical examiner s office. the latest american police officer killed in the line of duty. >> our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families and this entire community that has been devastated. >> the tragedy unfolded yesterday afternoon when a court employee tried to serve an eviction notice at this home. that's when police say someone inside opened fire, killing drexel mack, a civil process server in his early 40s. the suspect then opened fire on first responders, killing 35 year old police officer cody allen, a father of two. >> officer cody allen, uh, serve to this community not once, but twice. um, as an independent police officer, he is a hero. >> the suspect was taken into custody with minor injuries. investigators have not said what led up to the shooting. but our

kansas city affiliate, kmbc, reports the property had delinquent taxes with more than $28,000 due yesterday. the incident, similar to a recent shooting in minnesota, thousands gathered in the minneapolis suburb of burnsville wednesday, paying their respects to two police officers and an ems worker shot and killed while responding to a hostage situation on february 18th. the number of police officers shot on duty in the u.s. has hit a record high 378 were shot last year. that's a 62% increase since 2018. back to the shooting in missouri. two other officers who were also shot are expected to survive. police have not revealed any more details about the suspect. >> police are also investigating a deadly shooting in southern california. police say a gunman opened fire in the city of el cajon, east of san diego, killing one man and wounding two others. the 29 year old suspect fled the scene in a u-haul truck and is said to be armed and dangerous. after an hours long manhunt. he was taken into

custody. >> the leading presidential candidates have given voters to very different solutions to addressing the migrant crisis. president biden and former president trump both traveled to texas to meet with officials as they address the recent surge in illegal border crossings. biden invited trump to press house republicans to pass the bipartisan border bill that they recently blocked. at trump's urging, the bill would fund more border patrol officers and immigration judges. trump blamed biden for the crisis and doubled down on explosive comments, painting migrants as criminals and terrorists. join me or i'll join you in telling the congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill instead of playing politics with the issue. >> why don't we just get together and get it done? >> the united states is being overrun by the biden migrant crime. it's a new form of vicious violation to our country. despite trump's claims, recent studies show u.s. born citizens are over two times more likely to be arrested for
