challenger in the mayoral race in san francisco. now at five, the supervisor now considering joining the growing field of candidates. >> top republicans in the california assembly are demanding an investigation into governor newsom over the state's new fast food minimum wage law. why? they say it's benefiting one of his key donors, president biden and former president trump, both paying a visit to the southern border. >> but couldn't be farther apart on their plans to fix it. the solutions, the plans and proposals both are now pushing and a live look at the sierra don't go to tahoe. >> that's the message from state and local travel officials. at least much of the sierra is

expected to get buried under several feet of snow, as the bay area sees more rain. >> good morning to you. it is friday, march 1st. you know what that means. your rent. she's due . >> oh my goodness. well will we be paying? >> i mean, we're obviously going to pay because we have to stay indoors. >> yeah. so enjoy that rent you're paying today. you have all the time in the world, all the time in the world. live doppler seven. it's busy this morning. generally. just some light showers out there. we'll see the activity ramp up as we head throughout the afternoon and the evening, with some downpours and some gusty winds. the snow is falling in the sierra. here's a live look. we anticipate that this snow will become a lot heavier and steadier through the late morning. and really later on this afternoon and evening and into saturday. that's when those blizzard conditions are really going to ramp up back here at home. right now, we're in the 40s and in the 50s, we're not going to grow too far from where we are this morning. it's going to be a chilly day. it's a level two today because we have showers and downpours and a wind advisory, gusty winds up to

50mph are possible, along with a chance of thunderstorms. so this morning we're in and out of the light showers. it's really this afternoon. and this evening. here's future weather close to seven. that's when the heavier rain moves in. and this is when the winds will be at their strongest. we'll take a much closer look at those wind speeds . we'll also show you the blizzard warning. that's in effect coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with gloria and see how the commute is going on. this friday. >> good morning drew. so it is pretty quiet out there on the roads on this friday. we know friday. people tend to work from home a little bit more. so we don't see as much traffic on fridays. and you can see right here our map of the bay area roads. so far mostly green except from tracy to dublin, which we usually see a little bit of a slow down there. this is one of our busiest cameras right now. this is our 80 camera in emeryville, and you can see traffic starting to build here from highway four to the toll plaza. it will take you about 18 minutes. right now. >> thanks, gloria. a new video shows the heavy snow and gusty winds already hitting the lake tahoe area this morning. you're looking at tahoe city, so if you're thinking about going up

there to ski, snowboard or sled uh- don't. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the east bay right now, and i guess the chp says if you're not there already, then it's too dangerous to start that trip. >> yeah, reggie. that's right. good morning to you. and it's not just chp, it's also caltrans , the national weather service. and now even ski resorts telling people that it's just not safe to make the drive up to the sierra right now in these conditions. let's go. now to a live look at one of our traffic cameras in truckee. right now, this is highway 80 at highway 89. and just look at how much snow still needs to be cleared off the highway. drivers there will definitely have a slow go around this morning. and it was a similar story in truckee overnight. here's a look at some of the fresh snow that just fell in tahoe city. this video was taken between 1 and 3:00 this morning showing snow plows already out working to clear the roads, and it really shows this area already getting slammed

with snow overnight. that national weather service says up to 12ft of snow is expected to fall in the tahoe area over a 72 hour period. now, coop, a spokesman for kelly pass resorts , which represents multiple ski resorts, is urging skiers eager to hit the slopes to think twice about their plans. >> do not come up. it's not now. it's too much. you don't want it. you don't want to put the burden on caltrans and chp. the resorts are not going to be able to open. they will try maybe some of their lower elevation lifts, but the winds associated and with the amount of snow that we're going to see give the mountain teams a break. and we've learned for safety. >> palisades tahoe will close the alpine side of the resort today. and heavenly has also closed for the day because of the forecasted winds. resorts are instead encouraging skiers to make the trip up on monday. once this storm passes live in

the east bay. lena howland abc seven news all right, thanks so much, lena. >> those hazardous winter conditions have also forced national park officials to take the rare step of closing yosemite national park this winter storm is predicted to bring several feet of snow, rain and dangerous driving conditions. as mentioned before, the national park has already canceled or refunded guests for hotel and campground reservations throughout the weekend. all of our decisions are based primarily on visitor safety and a protection of park resources. >> we are going to close the park this evening at midnight. >> the park and its hotels may be able to reopen by sunday. until then, employees who live nearby and have to go through the storm will have extra resources available, like warming shelters and generators. >> bay area communities are helping their most vulnerable populations during the storm. this crew from fs global solutions put up a giant tent in the town of sonoma. it will be heated and used as an overnight

warming shelter. this weekend. the company provides outreach services to north bay communities, set up cots, bring coffee, tea, you know, hot drinks, water, a little bit of food and just try to give people a place where they can shelter for the storm. many people who are homeless are in need of places to stay dry during the day, since some shelters only offer overnights. the man who runs the jesus cares 2020 dining room in santa rosa opened four hours early yesterday to get folks out of the rain. >> the oakland zoo will be closed today because of the storm. if you had a reservation to visit, you will automatically receive a refund. they tweeted this video showing rain falling on the flamingo. as you can track the rain and snow throughout the weekend with the abc seven bay area apps, you can get the latest forecast and look at the same live doppler seven radar. drew and the weather team uses. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it now. >> the southern border is top of mind for many voters. in a new gallup poll, 28% of americans

say immigration is the most important issue facing our country. gloria at the live desk now, with more on how president biden and former president trump are outlining how they would fix the issue. >> good morning, reggie. illegal border border crossings are hitting record highs. border patrol agents caught more than 2 million people in 2022. president biden and former president trump visited texas yesterday. president biden is urging republican lawmakers to pass the border security bill. it would give more funding to border patrol officers and immigration judges. it is currently stalled in congress. house republicans are blocking the bill under direction from trump. trump is promising mass deportations and more border wall instead of playing politics with the issue. >> why don't we just get together and get it done? need more agents, more officers, more judges, more equipment in order to secure our border? it's time for us to move on. this the united states is being overrun. >> a very dangerous border. we're going to take care of it.

>> 50 miles of new wall were built, but deportations dropped significantly, far below his predecessor, barack obama. president biden is considering taking executive action to tackle the crisis, and that could include tougher asylum laws. an announcement could come at next week's state of the union. reggie >> thanks, gloria. immigration is just one hot button issue sure to be touched on during president biden's state of the union address next week. yesterday, we learned that alabama senator katie britt will give the republican response. you can watch it all live here on abc seven. this is next thursday night. coverage begins at 6 p.m. on new poll shows. democrat congressman adam schiff maintaining his lead in the primary race for u.s. senate. the emerson college poll shows schiff ahead with the support of 28% of likely voters. republican steve garvey is second place at 20. orange county democrat katie porter checks in at third at 17, and oakland's barbara lee with 8% at 7, remain undecided. ahead of tuesday's election. the

majority of those voters are leaning toward schiff. >> san francisco supervisor aaron peskin is considering a run for mayor. abc seven news insider phil matier says peskin is feeling encouraged by some recent polling numbers and feels like he could bring something to the table as a candidate. a recent chronicle poll found 44% of likely voters who identify as progressive do not have a first choice for mayor. that could put peskin in a strong position. peskin was first elected to the board of supervisors in 2000. he is until june 11th to declare his candidacy, and we're just days away from california. s march primary polling places will open at 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. you can take your mail in ballot there, or to a drop box or a county elections office as long as it's delivered by 8 p.m. if you prefer to mail it, your ballot must be postmarked no later than tuesday, and you can actually still register to vote. california allows people to do same day voter registration on

509 this morning, and we are on storm watch now through the weekend. >> part of the reason why we're tracking a series of fronts that's going to swing through northern california. here's the first one to our north ahead of it. we are getting some showers this morning. snow is falling in the sierra. we're seeing some lightning strikes to one in the last 15 minutes. so it's not out of the question later on today. and even early tomorrow, we could see thunderstorm is in the forecast level two today. the reason why it's not only the downpours, the winds are really going to ramp up later on this evening. they could gust as high as 50mph. so trees could come down today. and again that thunderstorm chance is there. let's look at the winds midday. those winds are about 20 to 30mph. as that front gets closer, watch those numbers. ramp up. by 7 p.m. those winds are gusting 30 to 50mph. and that also coincides with downpours moving through the wind. advisory kicks in at noon today, lasting all weekend. for those gusts up to 50mph for a huge portion of the region. for that threat of isolated power outages and trees coming down,

minimum wage law has made an exception for a person who donated to his campaign. this law is set to take effect in april. it requires a $20 an hour

wage for fast food workers, but it does have an exemption for restaurants that make their own bread. and that's where we get into this, because earlier this week, it was revealed a person who owns a number of panera bread locations. made a $160,000 donation to newsom's campaign. originally some people thought that panera was going to be exempt from this new minimum wage law, but the governor's team is now saying that panera does not fall under any exemption. in a statement to abc news, the owner of the panera bread franchisee in question said, quote, to be clear, at no time did i ask for an exemption or special considerations. in fact, the idea never even occurred to me and i was surprised when the exemption appeared in the final legislation. republican legislators are calling for an investigation on san francisco's downtown. mall has a new name, emporium center, san francisco, that replaces the former westfield name, which was taken off the building last summer

after the owner turned the property over to its lender. the firm now managing the mall says this new name celebrates its history and staying power. it was called the emporium when it opened in 1896, with the first department store on the west coast. >> new details in the investigation into an october crash in san francisco, where a woman was dragged 20ft by a cruise. driverless robo taxi after she was hit by another car, the examiner reports. the city of san francisco is objecting to a proposed settlement in the case. city attorney david chiu has reportedly sent a letter to the california public utilities commission saying cruises reports do not represent an accurate or complete accounting of the incident. cruise has offered to pay $75,000 to end proceedings, but chiu is reportedly asking for the cpuc to conduct its own investigation or to hold a public hearing that would force cruise to show why it should not be sanctioned by the cpuc. cruise declined to comment on the objections.

glassdoor is closing its last offices in san francisco and chicago as it fully commits to remote work. the job search company will also not renew its lease at its san francisco headquarters at 300 mission street. ceo christian sutherland loooooong, told fortune his employees are just as productive from home. he said employees enjoy working from home, and remote work allows them to hire people they did not have access to before. >> san francisco may get its first freeway carpool lane. the lane would run along northbound interstate 280 from 18th street to the king street off ramp. that stretch usually takes drivers to oracle park in the embarcadero. there are two proposals being considered by the city. option one turns the freeway's left lane into a carpool lane that plan would reduce general traffic by one lane. option two adds a fifth lane to make that lane, the carpool lane work could begin as soon as 2026. a new san jose rv safe parking site is just months

away from opening, and it's going to cost much less than anticipated. >> the six acre patch of land located on berryessa road will cost half of its initial price. it's set to be the largest rv supportive parking program in the city. yesterday city leaders announced the reduced cost cost and say the savings were due to streamlining the project. it was initially priced at $15 million and will now cost $7.5 million. officials say the program will give unhoused people 85 rv parking spaces with utilities and access to critical services, so when they're here, they get services that they need, but they also are able to go out and get back on their feet. >> and we hope that that allows them to transition back into something more stable. >> construction on the site is planned to start next month, and it's expected to be open by early fall. >> the oakland a's organization says it is not going to interfere with the boycott planned by fans at the team's opener at the end of the month, boycott organizer has previously posted on social media saying

that the a's would try to clear the parking lot and prevent them from tailgating. the a's told the chronicle those claims are not true. fans are planning to boycott the a's opener by showing up at the coliseum parking lot, but not going inside. they want to show the team's owner, john fisher, they aren't happy about plans to relocate the a's to vegas. >> the san jose earthquakes returned to paypal park tomorrow. it's their cali clasico home game, a home opener , i should say, against the la galaxy. 2024 represents the 50th anniversary of the earthquakes franchise. all parts of the organization, from fan experience to the players themselves, want to make sure this year is a great one for san jose. >> it's a club we had so much history, so much good players. uh- played here in this stadium. a and it's our responsibility to represent the san jose in the best way possible. >> as far as food, the menu theme is fun flavor, flavorful and from california. a lot of

encounter some light showers this morning as we head into the afternoon when they become heavier and the winds become a lot stronger. so here's future weather this morning we'll track those scattered showers for you all morning long as we head later on into the afternoon and early evening. here's 6 p.m. heavier rain starts to move in here friday night. plans. you're going to have to deal with some heavy rain moving through. this is 9 p.m. continuing into 11 p.m. as well. rainfall totals with this round of rain today, we're thinking anywhere from a quarter to about an inch of rain that's falling over about a 12 hour period that we can handle. so no flood watches in effect. we're not expecting any flooding. what we are expecting, though, in parts of mendocino and lake county, we will get some snow. a winter storm warning in effect. this does include the interior portions of mendocino county. all of lake county where above 1000ft. we could see 5 to 9in of snow. so clear lake itself right around lake level could see 1 to 3in of snow. just an indication of the cold air setting in. here's a

aaron peskin tells abc seven news he's considering a run. >> number seven. people who have the latest macbook pro and imac models can now repair their own computers. apple expanded its self-service repair program to include computers with the new m3 chip. >> uber is rolling out a new feature for teenagers to access the rideshare app. uber teen will allow them to order riders or order rides alone, but with some parental supervision, parents can track their kids in real time and will be alerted when the car stops or veers off track. uber promises only its top rated drivers will be able to access this new feature for all uber drivers go through background checks both the both for their driving history as well as their criminal background. >> check at the state and local and federal level, and we don't run these background checks only once. we run them every single year. >> uber also plans to add a reserve feature this summer so teens can order their rides ahead of time. a new school for

teens who are parents is now open in alameda county. officials held a special ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of the carolyn hobbs academy in san leandro. the school offers child care support to young parents, including prenatal care, health, nutrition and career counseling. it's named after carolyn hobbs, a retired principal who served alameda county office of education for 22 years. she was the coordinator and principal of the school systems parenting teen programs, new life for the san francisco art institute. according to the san francisco chronicle, a newly formed nonprofit has purchased the russian hill campus for $30 million. that's about 10 million less than it was previously valued. the deal also includes a diego rivera mural valued at $50 million. the nonprofit plans to keep it as an arts learning center. they're going to renovate the property and potentially add housing for artists and residents. the art institute declared bankruptcy

last year after 150 years in existence. >> today, march 1st, marks the start of women's history month and what better way to celebrate than by recognizing a familiar california face renowned earthquake, seismic seismologist lucy jones is being recognized as one of usa today's women of the year. jones has been the go to media expert. after a big shake for almost 40 years. in 2008, she led the team that developed the great shakeout out an earthquake preparedness drill that teaches participants to drop, cover and hold on. last year, more than 57 million people in 74 countries across the world joined the now annual exercise. although she retired from the us geological survey in 2016, jones still works with scientists, policymakers and the public to prepare for a broad range of disasters. jones says she looks forward to seeing more women scientists shape the world. >> she's always so interesting to talk to, always. i really like her fil a shake. we got a call. call her and she answers.

effect. so today, lighter showers first thing. it's the afternoon and the evening. you have friday night plans. get ready for downpours and some strong winds. it's chilly today with temperatures only in the 50s. let's see how the commute is going with gloria. good morning. >> good morning drew. so we are getting reports of a crash right now in orinda. and this just happened. now this is actually the same spot where we had a crash yesterday. this is over on westbound 24 at wilder road. and this is a two car crash right now. speeds are down to 14mph. so this is causing some major delays in this area. so we'll keep checking in on that for you throughout the morning. and then a look at your drive times for today from tracy to castro valley. that will take you 50 minutes. guys >> thanks, gloria. happening today, the commission tasked with finding oakland's next police chief will give their recommendation on finalists to mayor shengtao. the mayor did not attend last night's forum where the four candidates answered some of the public's. questions. so here is the group. they are all from outside of the police department. abdul pridgen was on the short list in 2020. he was most recently the police chief in san leandro. but left

earlier this month. pridgen is under investigation for unknown department policy violations. this is floyd mitchell. he has a long resume. he resigned from his most recent job as the chief of police in lubbock, texas. the department faced criticism for its handling of certain 911 calls. lisa davis has spent her entire career with the cincinnati. police department. she started there in 1992 and is currently the assistant police chief. louis molina, a former nypd officer now serves as the assistant deputy mayor for public safety in new york. he's been criticized for his handling of deaths at the city jails, the forum lasted nearly two hours. each candidate got to pitch their plan. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has the highlights experience for police chief candidates. >> speaking to the oakland police commission and the public through zoom, a commission that started first by hearing from louis molina, who is currently the assistant deputy mayor for public safety in new york city. molina, referencing his extensive experience in new york

. >> i worked in policing. i worked in the district attorney's office, and i've worked in corrections, and i think if i'm given the opportunity to lead this department, you'll see significant, tremendous impact on not only how we manage and make oakland safer from a crime perspective, but how we improve livability throughout the city. >> second up was assistant police chief lieutenant colonel lisa davis of cincinnati pd. her initial plan as oakland police chief would involve officers in the downtown area. >> i know that it's important to the downtown business district to have more officers there, to have them on foot, and i'd like to look at the possibility of expanding, um. the number of officers in the downtown area and creating more of a robust, um, downtown third candidate to speak, abdul pridgen, the former san leandro police chief. >> pridgen brought up officer accountability, multiple times. >> many people will tell you accountability is my middle name. the success or failure of

better idea of what folks in the sierra are dealing with right now, here's a look at some new video taken overnight in tahoe city. this video was taken between 1 and 3. this morning, showing snow plows already out hard working to clear the roads, and it really shows this area already getting slammed with snow overnight and taking a live look at one of our traffic cameras in truckee right now. this is highway 80 at highway 89. and just look at how much snow still needs to be cleared off the highway. all this snow was enough for sports basement in sunnyvale to cancel their ski busses for tomorrow. after launching 23 total bus trips just last weekend. >> and this weekend, we're going to be canceling saturday. that's kind of a no brainer with all the storms. and you know, we're looking at 80 to 90 mile per hour winds on saturday uh- sunday is question mark. so we're planning to run busses. but if it's safe i'm staying away from that this weekend. >> it's like i think it was like

pick up in the sierra. even some lightning. so thunderstorms are in the forecast today. it's a level two for the morning commute. we're just dealing with some light showers out there, temperatures pretty much staying in the 50s all morning and all day long. the heavier rain is going to move in here in the afternoon and in the evening. so we'll have those light scattered showers early on. then in the afternoon and later on tonight the winds turn up. the heavy rain begins to fall. these winds gusting 40 to even 50mph as that heavy rain is going to fall. here's a look at future weather. the winds will pick up this afternoon. it's later on this evening. there you go. you have those winds gusting 35 to 50mph. so not out of the question. we could have trees down. we could also have some isolated power outages later on tonight, a wind advisory kicks in here at noon today for a big portion of the region. essentially our highest areas, but also most of the inland east bay included with this because we will see those gusts up to 50mph possible. it's just a cold day today. the start of march is coming in like a

we'll get into the evening, commute back some of the heavier rain to start falling, and then we're in and out of the showers for the rest of tonight and through the weekend. so heading into saturday, not as heavy, more scattered in nature, but it's colder. a dusting of snow, likely on our highest peaks. and then we'll repeat that again on sunday with scattered showers remaining in the forecast. looking at rainfall over the next three days. for a lot of us, we're thinking half of an inch to an inch and a half. we can handle that much rain over three days in the north bay. we're watching some cities closely because we'll likely see more than two inches of rain. not expecting any flooding concerns, maybe some minor ponding of water on our roadways. so we do have a winter storm warning in effect for interior portions of mendocino county. all of lake county, we're above 1000ft. we could actually pick up 5 to 9in of snow. so through the weekend, taking a look at the snowfall forecast in the sierra, we are talking about that blizzard warning. still, we're just getting into the thick of this today and tomorrow. the worst of this storm. still feet of snow expected. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days. you level two today. then it becomes a
