day in the 50s. let's see how the commute is going with gloria. good morning. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. i know drew has been talking about the rain and you could experience some light showers when you're driving this morning, so just keep that in mind. we're taking a live look right now at our richmond-san rafael bridge camera. and you could see there are not too many cars out here at all right now. and of course, traffic is always a little lighter on fridays. so that's definitely what we're seeing here. also, on our 680 camera in walnut creek, traffic is flowing nicely southbound to highway 24. so if you're going to get on the roads, you won't have any delays in this area. reggie >> thanks, gloria. happening now . blizzard like conditions in the sierra. several vehicles and businesses were seen covered in heavy snowfall. already, caltrans has issued chain controls on interstate 80 for all east and west bound lanes near the donner summit. chains will also be required for highways 89 and two. 67 from truckee to olympic valley and north star to kings beach. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in livermore with the

challenges anyone going to tahoe is going to have, lena. >> hey, reggie. chp, caltrans, the national weather service, and even local ski resorts are now warning folks that it's just not safe to make the drive up to the sierra right now. now, in these conditions, let's take a live look at one of our traffic cameras in truckee. right now. this is highway 80 at highway 89. and just look at how much snow still needs to be cleared off the highway. >> drivers there definitely have a slow go around this morning and it was a similar story in truckee overnight. >> here's a look at some of the fresh snow that just fell actually over in tahoe city. this video was taken between 1 and 3. this morning showing snow plows already out working to clear the roads. and it really shows this area already getting slammed with snow overnight. the national weather service says up to 12ft of snow is expected to fall in the tahoe area over a 72 hour period. now coop, a

spokesman for kelly pass resorts , which represents multiple ski resorts, is urging skiers eager to hit the slopes to think twice about their plans. do not come up. >> not now. it's too much. you don't want it. you don't want to put the burden on caltrans and chp. the resorts are not going to be able to open. they will try and maybe some of their lower elevation lifts. but the winds associated and with the amount of snow that we're going to see give the mountain teams a break. >> we've learned for safety. palisades tahoe will close the alpine side of the resort today, and heavenly has also closed for the day because of the forecasted winds. these resorts are instead encouraging skiers to make the trip up. >> on monday. by the time that this storm passes live in the east bay. >> lena howland abc seven news all right, thank you so much, lena. >> and those hazardous winter conditions have forced national park officials to take the rare step of closing yosemite

national park this winter storm is predicted to bring several feet of snow, rain and dangerous driving conditions. the national park has already canceled or refunded guests for hotel and campground reservations throughout the weekend. >> all of our decisions are based primarily on visitor safety and a protection of park resources. we are going to close the park this evening at midnight at the park and its hotels may be able to reopen by sunday. >> until then, employees who live nearby and have to go through the storm will have extra resources available, like warming shelters and generators. >> bay area communities are helping their most vulnerable populations during the storm. this crew from fs global solutions has put up a giant tent in the town of sonoma. it will be heated and used as an overnight warming shelter this weekend. the company provides outreach services to north bay communities, set up cots, bring coffee, you know, hot drinks, water, a little bit of food and just try to give people a place where they can shelter for the

britt is going to give the republican response. you can watch it live here on abc seven. thursday night coverage starts at 6 p.m. >> san francisco supervisor aaron peskin is considering a run for mayor. >> abc seven news insider phil matier says peskin is feeling encouraged by some recent polling numbers, and feels like he could bring something to the table as a candidate. a recent chronicle poll found 44% of likely voters who identify as progressive do not have a first choice for mayor. that could put peskin in a strong position. peskin was first elected to the board of supervisor in 2000. he has until june 11th to declare his candidacy, and we are just days away from california's march primary. polling places will be open at 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. you can take your mail in ballot there or to a drop box or to a county elections office as long as it's delivered by 8 p.m. if you prefer to mail it, your ballot must be postmarked no later than tuesday, and you can actually still register to vote.

the airport last night after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit. the plane took off from burbank with 16 people. it turned around as the pilot reported that problem. karol g is currently on tour with a stop tonight in guatemala. no one was hurt and the cause of that smoke is under investigation. >> 611 this morning we are taking a look at live doppler seven because it is active across northern california. the scattered showers here locally snow picking up in the sierra. it's all along a cold front that is pressing through the sky is going to change from time to time. today we'll have those lighter, scattered showers throughout the first half of our day. the winds begin to pick up. it's the afternoon and the evening. we have heavy rain moving through here. it's a level two on the storm impact scale. looking at winds this afternoon, they do pick up peaking this evening right around 7 p.m. those winds gusting 30 to 50mph. trees down possible. also some power outages. a high surf advisory in effect along our coast today. just a nasty day today. it's cold. we have showers. it turns windy. we have those temperatures in the 50s. we'll

because together we can still get big things done. has made an exception for a person who donated to his campaign. this law, set to take effect in april. it requires a $20 an hour wage for fast food workers. it does have an exemption for restaurants that make their own bread. and that's where this story picks up speed, because earlier this week, a

person who owns a number of panera bread locations, ones made a or, it was discovered that he made a $160,000 donation to newsom's campaign. so some people thought that panera was exempt from this new minimum wage law. but newsom's team says panera does not fall under that exemption. after all, in a statement to abc news, the owner of the panera bread franchise in question said, quote, to be clear and no time did i ask for an exemption or special consideration. in fact, the idea never even occurred to me, and i was surprised when the exemption appeared in the final legislation. when republican legislators are calling for an investigation, a new poll shows democratic congressman adam schiff maintaining his lead in the primary for us senate. the emerson college poll shows schiff is ahead with the support of 28% of likely voters. republican steve garvey is second with 20. orange county democrat katie porter checks in with 17% and coming in fourth is oakland's barbara lee with 8,

17% remain undecided ahead of tuesday's election. the majority of those voters are leaning toward schiff. san francisco may get its first freeway carpool lane, although it's years away. the lane would run along northbound interstate 280 from 18th street to the king street off ramp. that stretch usually takes people to oracle park and the embarcadero, so there are two proposals being considered option one turns the freeway's current left lane into a carpool lane. that would mean one less lane for a non carpool drivers to use option two adds a fifth lane for that carpool lane, which. could 2026. >> a new san jose rv safe parking site is just months away from opening, and it's going to cost much less than anticipated. the six acre patch of land located on berryessa road will cost half of its initial price. it's set to be the largest rv supportive parking program in the city. yesterday, city leaders announced the reduced cost and say the savings were due to streamlining the project.

it was initially priced at $15 million and will now cost $7.5 million. officials say the program will give unhoused people 85 rv parking spaces with utilities and access to critical services. >> so when they're here, they get services that they need, but they also are able to go out and get back on their feet. and we hope that that allows them to transition back into something more stable. >> construction on the site is planned to start next month, and it's expected to be open by early fall. >> $2.6 billion. that's how much a sunnyvale based ai robotics company is now valued at, thanks to the investment of some other bay area companies, openai and nvidia are just a few of the investors of figure. the figure is working on a faceless robot that can do tasks in the place of humans. the faceless robot is really what's getting me. the company said its robots can complete a real world task, like moving a box onto a conveyor belt. this video shows what they

>> looking out for him. >> i'll let you rest for a second. >> recharge for 90s. >> let's talk about the weather. it is going to get busy later today. live doppler seven. we have scattered showers out there right now. they're pretty light in nature. we're tracking a heavier rain as we head into the afternoon and evening. here's future weather 630 tonight. if you have friday night plans, you will be dealing with downpours as the heavier rain indicated by the pops of yellow and orange just going to be a wet second half to our day today. as we head later on tonight, you can still see we're in those downpours mainly focused in the east bay and the south bay. now over the weekend. it's not going to be a shield of rain the entire time. it's more scattered showers in nature, but future weather showing you areas like mount hamilton, even parts of lake and mendocino county will likely see some snow. and we'll just continue that trend even into sunday. just going to be a cold weekend with unsettled weather, rainfall as we head through sunday night. for a lot of us around the bay shoreline, about a half of an inch to an inch and a half in the north bay

could see some areas over two inches of rain, but this is falling over a three day period, so we're not anticipating any major impacts when it comes to flooding. more nuisance flooding like standing water on our roads would be the biggest impact. but we will talk about that snow here locally, parts of mendocino county and also lake county under a winter storm warning starting tonight above 1000ft. we'll see 5 to 9in of snow. even parts of clear lake at the lower elevations could pick up 1 to 3in of snow. even higher snow totals. coming to the sierra, we've been advertising this all week. the blizzard is just getting underway. the heaviest snow falling later today. and on saturday that blizzard warning is in effect. do not try and travel there at all. just wait until next week. we will end up measuring that snow again in several feet back here at home today. cold day temperatures only in the 50s with those showers becoming heavier, those winds becoming stronger. that wind advisory kicks in at noon could have winds gusting close to 50mph. that could bring some trees down. here's the accuweather seven day forecast level two today. over the weekend it goes down to a level one. it's just chilly with

in the sierra today and tomorrow . that blizzard warning is in effect back here at home. lighter showers for the first half of your day. it's the afternoon. in the evening, those downpours are with us. those winds are blustery and it's a chilly day. temperatures only in the 50s. amanda. >> all right. thanks drew. more than 100,000 bottles of mouthwash are being recalled because of a potential poisoning risk for children. heritage store hydrogen peroxide mouthwash does not have child resistant packaging, which is required for products that contain ethanol. according to the consumer product safety commission. the recall includes the eucalyptus, mint and winter mint flavors. the manufacturer is offering free refunds or replacements. no injuries have been reported. if you're 65 or older, the cdc is recommending you get another dose of the latest covid 19 vaccine. this comes as new cdc studies show the vaccine's effectiveness wanes over time, especially in people over the age of 65. doctors say most seniors should

taking a live look at one of our traffic cameras in truckee right now. this is highway 80 at highway 89. and just look at how much snow still needs to be cleared off of the highway. all this snow was enough for sports basement in sunnyvale to cancel their ski busses for tomorrow. after launching 23 total bus trips just last weekend, this weekend. we're going to be canceling saturday. >> that's kind of a no brainer with all the storms. and you know, we're looking at 80 to 90 mile per hour winds on saturday uh- sunday is question mark. so we're planning to run busses, but if it's safe i'm staying away from that this weekend. >> it's just like i think it was like 5 to 8ft of snow. if conditions are safe by sunday, those ski busses take off from the sports basement parking lots in sunnyvale, the one off of bryant street in san francisco and in berkeley, they take off starting at 5 a.m. and we have learned for safety that palisades tahoe will close the

alpine side of the resort today. >> and we've also learned that heavenly has also closed for the day. live in the east bay. lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. state water officials hope this weekend's storm will put the sierra snowpack at or above normal for this time of year. the department of water resources snow survey just found the statewide snowpack is currently 80% of normal. that is considerably more than last month's measurement of 52. while the snowpack is looking better, we're not where we need to be. it will take several additional storm forms within the month of march to really get us from, um, the current 70% of april 1st average up to 100% of average by the 1st of april, the storm now hitting the sierra prompted officials to move the survey from today to yesterday. snow from the sierra provides about a third of our water for the state at the oakland zoo will also be closed today because of the

commit without sacrifice. facing humanity. organizers of the recall effort say price is soft on crime. >> the man acquitted in the 2015 shooting death of kate steinle will be deported to central or southern mexico within the next week. that's according to the new york times. jose inez garcia zarate, who is undocumented, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges in 2017. but he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun. steinle was shot and killed while walking along pier 14 in san francisco. she was with her father at the time. according to garcia zarate's, attorneys. he found the gun along the waterfront and accidentally fired it. >> a police officer and a court employee were shot and killed during an eviction at a home in missouri. a procession of law enforcement officials escorted the officer's body to the medical examiner's office. the 35 year old police officer was a father of two officer cody allen , uh- served served this community not once but twice. >> um, as an independent police

officer. he is a hero. >> authorities say a court employee who was trying to serve an eviction notice when someone inside opened fire, killing him. drexel mack was a civil process server in his early 40s. after he was shot, the suspect started shooting. at first responders. the suspect was taken into custody with minor injuries. >> his supporters and family of russian opposition leader alexei navalny said their final goodbyes at his funeral in moscow today. thousands gathered as police filled the area. navalny's team accused russian authorities of trying to disrupt the funeral and prevent people from gathering to pay their respects. his team also said it was challenging finding a hearse to take his body to the funeral, because drivers were threatened to not deliver his body since the war between israel and hamas started, there has been a disturbing rise in anti-semitism. >> anti semitism, especially on college campuses. more students are speaking out about their experiences, including students from uc berkeley and stanford.

blizzard warning in effect for good reason. nothing has changed with this forecast. we will still measure that snow in feet, the heaviest snow coming later today and into saturday. back here at home it's a level two for downpours and some strong winds this evening, and even the chance of a thunderstorm will find the rain is steadier as we head later into the evening. those pops of yellow and orange, even some red indicating the heavier showers, will continue to watch that late tonight. by 11 p.m, we're still dealing with this front now. over the weekend , what we'll find both saturday and sunday. the showers are more widely scattered in nature, but you could be underneath a quick downpour. also a dusting of snow, very likely on our highest peaks over the weekend. just an indication of the colder air that is funneling in rainfall totals. now through the weekend around the bay shoreline, about a half of an inch to an inch and a half. we can handle that amount of rain over a three day period. some areas may approach closer to two inches, so we may have some nuisance flooding, meaning you may have some standing water on our roadways. but all in all, this is not a
