a life threatening blizzard is bearing the sierra. how people are staying safe during this dangerous storm. plus, a weekend of wild weather here in the bay area downed trees, rain, hail and slick roads. we are tracking it all. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm karina nova, we're following the blizzard conditions in the sierra, but we're also right in the middle of a wet and stormy weekend here in the bay area.

this is a level one storm on the abc seven storm impact scale. weather anchor spencer christian is tracking the rain that's expected to come and go for the rest of the evening. and spencer, we're seeing bits of sun, then downpours. it's just been a mess out there. >> it's quite a mix. karina we are getting some wet weather across much of the bay area. as you can see on live doppler seven. and as you mentioned, it's not raining everywhere. there are little breaks of sunshine here and there, but the steadiest rain right now is reaching through the central bay area, south of the golden gate, south of san francisco, down on the peninsula san mateo, redwood city getting some downpours right now, the rain has just moved ouof half moon bay. at least the heavier rain over the east bay. steady downpours now near fremont and up toward livermore, dublin, san ramon but again, some areas right now are not getting much rain at all from this system. it is a level one storm. as you mentioned, the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tonight. we expect more periods of showers, some brief downpours, gusty wind, rough surf. although the surf is getting tamer now and a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. but look at the

forecast animation as we go into the evening hours. notice how the showers become more widespread and they diminish in intensity by 1030 11:00 tonight, we'll just have a few spotty showers around, but those spotty showers will continue to fall overnight and into the day tomorrow. frost advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. for the north bay overnight. it will be quite cold with temperatures dropping down to about 36 degrees. and you mentned the sierra. i need to mention that in the sierra we still have a blizzard warning in effect until 10 a.m. tomorrow. that includes the greer tahoe area, several feet of snow will accumulate before this. this blizzard goes away. i'll have e complete accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. karina. >> all right. let's talk about that snow in the sierra that's accumulating by the hour. you're looking live at i-80 in truckee, which was closed yesterday. and it has no timeline for reopening . the national weather service says whiteout conditions are expected throughout the weekend and is urging drivers to stay off all the roads for a second

day in a row. a number of ski lake tahoe ski resorts remain shut down by the storm, and that includes sugar bowl resort. they posted this video on social media saying they got 20 to 24in of snow overnight at a few resorts are open with reduced operation as the large amounts of snow and high wind gusts are creating problems for the uc berkeley central sierra. snow lab. the scientists there gave an update this morning saying they'd received almost 21in of snow in the last day. the snow lab also says it lost power overnight, but they were able to keep all systems online. power has since been restored and we continue our team coverage now with a look at how people in the sierra are hunkering down and some of them are digging out already. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with some of them, and cornell, what are they telling you about the conditions today? >> karina? many say this is a storm to remember. the snow is still piling up. the wind is

still howling. the blizzard is leaving a lot of folks stuck this weekend and trying to dig out. interstate 80 in the northern california area and sierra nevada is closed from colfax to the nevada state line due to spinouts. interstate 80 remained closed saturday afternoon over donner summit, the winter storm slamming the sierra with rare blizzard conditions, creating a bone chilling mess. trucks were stranded in heavy snow, so the chp says emergency personnel and tow trucks had a tough time reaching drivers. >> oh my gosh, such an epic storm. definitely. especially in march. >> renee adelman from marin county is riding out the blizzard in south lake tahoe. our house was rocking last night. >> there were gale force winds. the windows were creaking. um, it it was the worst that i've seen in a few years. >> this was the view from renee's place before the blizzard and after getting out. will be challenging. >> this is our neighbor's house, by the way, that the snow is up

to halfway up their door. um, but we brought groceries with us and supplies, so we didn't have to go to the grocery store, and we figured that we were just going to stay home today, and we'll see what the ski conditions are like tomorrow. right now, i mean, we're working to open the mountain, but it's this storm is coming down heavy, fast and hard with really high winds. so it's going to take some time for us to get back open ski resorts like palisades tahoe were closed saturday due to severe weather and unbelievable wind gusts. >> overnight on top siberia ridge, which is the top part of our mountain, we were reaching wind uh- up to 190mph, which is, you know, i'm pretty sure it's hurricane force winds. >> we're obviously going to be seeing a lot of this today. my neighbors are, uh, digging out retired abc seven news photographer randy davis lives in truckee, where the snow is being measured in feet. i'm walking on the deck in over t feet of powder. light snow, very

light snow. but there's a significant amount of it. we filled our cars up with gas if we not that we're going to go anywhere. it looks like it's going to be a while before anyone gets out of town. yeah it certainly could be. >> and we just checked. interstate 80 remains closed in both directions over donner summit. the chp urging motorists to wait until conditions improve before they even try to get to tahoe. could be several days before streets and highway off ramps in the tahoe area are plowed. for cars and trucks. so much snow there. cornell, bernard abc seven news. a lot of work for those people that have to dig out. >> thanks, cornell. the storm left behind a mess at san francisco national cemetery in the presidio, a 50 foot eucalyptus tree fell onto several gravesites earlier today. it also landed on a water main, causing it to break a tree, trimming company and san francisco firefighters are on scene cleaning up the damage. the string of storms is also dropping hail. we've heard reports from placer county all

the way down to the bay, and this was the scene in contra costa county this morning. a family in el sobrante woke up to a layer of hail in their yard and on top of their cars, which it can do damage you're hearing it and looking at hail. just pounding down in the peninsula. this video was taken this morning in san mateo as spencer told us, rain will continue to move through the area on and off throughout the evening. oakland chp tells us rainy weather is likely to blame for a tanker truck accident on interstate 880 this morning. the truck overturned on some slippery roads, causing a fuel spill and a traffic build up. drivers were diverted away from the southbound side of the freeway near fifth avenue. it happened after a car hit the median around 2:30 a.m. and stalled out in the second lane as it was disabled in the lane. >> uh- truck was unable to avoid that disabled vehicle and struck

it. it was a fuel truck that ended up the trailer overturning on to its side. on the roadway, which resulted in a hazardous material spill. >> an estimated 500 gallons of fuel spilled out. most of it was contained on the roadway, while up to 150 gallons went down a storm drain. crews cleaned up and reopened the lanes this afternoon. there were no injuries. chp is warning about wet roads and santa cruz. they posted this photo to social media today showing a vehicle that crashed into trees on highway 17 near crescent road. fortunately, no one was hurt. meanwhile p-g-and-e's crews are working to restore power to thousands of people. here's a look at the current outages. there are still about 4000 of them across the bay area. we're seeing the worst of it in the north bay, where just over 2000 p-g-and-e's customers are without power. you can get the latest forecast and track the rain and the snow anytime with our live doppler seven radar. just search abc seven bay area

in cantonese and mandarin is very important to winning. >> and the chinese community really understands how important affordable housing is. >> passage of prop eight will require a yes from two thirds of the votes cast. san francisco unified school district has announced a plan that could ultimately lead to closed schools within the next two years, the chronicle reports. superintendent matt wayne has outlined a plan to address the loss of about 10,000 students since 2015. that plan could involve the shuttering of an undisclosed number of schools by fall of 2025. wayne says there are no specific schools being targeted for now. the new plan comes as the district is addressing several major issues, including a massive budget shortfall and replacing a faulty payroll system. there is developing news coming out of gaza about a potential cease fire deal. the terms of the agreement and what needs to happen next. plus, as the news came out, people braved the rain

waiting for food from a relief delivery, killing 100 people and developing news right now. senior u.s. administration officials say israel has essentially endorsed a framework for a cease fire in gaza, but hamas must agree to it, according to u.s. officials. the proposal includes a six week cease fire. hamas must also release hostages considered to be vulnerable, including the sick, the wounded, the elderly and women. the biden administration is pushing for a deal to be struck before the start of the holy muslim month of ramadan, which starts in just over a week. people from all over the bay area gathered in san francisco today to rally against the mass killings of palestinians in gaza. free palestine. free, free. >> free palestine. free palestine. today's demonstration is part of international call to action, demanding an immediate cease fire and an end to u.s. support of israel. >> we have gathered in the thousands here today in san

francisco and all over the world to demand an end to the united states's complicity in the genocide of the palestinian people. we fund israel every single year. we are anticipating a bill of $17 billion going straight to israel. why are we sending arms and our tax dollars straight to israel to commit a genocide against the palestinian people? >> they marched down market street and gathered in the rain at embarcadero plaza. millions rallied globally today following the reports of a massacre in gaza and mass starvation and displacement. governor gavin newsom is calling for more cooperation from gop congressional members on immigration issues after his latest stop along the california mexico border. the governor was briefed by the california national guard and u.s. border patrol late friday night. he also met with community leaders at a shelter supporting migrant

talk about the rain. the snow. i don't know what else is going hail earlier today. >> all forms of precipitation. they're all out there right now. karina and some breaks of sunshine as well. >> well, well, we like to see that. >> we love that. when we can find it, we see a lot of green on live doppler seven, indicating both moisture in the atmosphere and rain hitting the ground. but as you can see, there's not a lot of widespread heavy rain right now. we've got a few downpours over the peninsula now moving eastward and southward over in the east bay from san ramon down to hayward, out toward livermore,

some scattered downpours. but basically we're looking at light rainfall right now because it's a light storm, a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tonight, though, we expect more periods of showers, some brief downpours, some breaks from time to time, gusty winds, but the gusts will be tapering off a little bit later. so here's the forecast animation starting at 5 p.m. notice it'll be wet in lots of locations with another uh- wave of rain pushing onshore about that time. but as we get later into the evening hours, we'll see the storm breaking up into more scattered showers, more widely scattered showers, in fact, and the rainfall will be less intense. and that pattern will continue overnight with light showers was scattered through the overnight hours into tomorrow and into early next week, so there's not going to be an end to this pattern for a while. it's going to be cold overnight. frost advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. for the three north bay counties of napa, sonoma and marin. temperatures dropping down to about the mid 30s. and of course, it is still snowing furiously in the sierra blizzard warning in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. we're talking

about 5 to 10ft of accumulation at elevations above 5000ft, and incredibly powerful wind gusts well above 75mph in some of the over. some of the ridges, well over 100mph here in the bay area. right now, we're looking at gusts up to about 25mph. so moderate gusts and it's much cooler than it was at this time yesterday. about 4 to 8 degrees cooler in most locations. in fact. let's take a look at current temperatures right now. 48 in san francisco, 49 san mateo, low 50s at oakland, hayward, san jose, and half moon bay. other temperature readings right now as we look northward from the golden gate, mid to upper 40s at santa rosa, petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord, and livermore, and these are our forecast headlines this evening. showers, snow and maybe even some thunder snow in our higher peaks. that is overnight a cold uh- snow in the north bay. frost i should say not snow. although it may snow at some of the higher north bay peaks and then going into early next week, more unsettled weather is coming our way for

tonight. low temperatures, mainly in the upper 30s in the inland areas, except a little bit chillier in the north bay where we have that frost advisory and low 40s just about everywhere else. high temperatures tomorrow mainly in the mid 50s and not much milder than that. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so showers off and on and maybe some snow on our higher peaks again tomorrow. rainy and breezy again on monday. still wet and unsettled on tuesday. finally wednesday and thursday we get a break in the action. some sunny skies through friday before the next chance of some rain next weekend >> all right, the nfl combine is in indianapolis this weekend. it wraps up tomorrow. the 40 niners made several moves on their coaching staff. espn reports the niners have gone internal promoting nick sorensen to defensive coordinator. you see him right there with the hat and the long hair. he's been with the niners since 2022 and most recently served as the team's defensive game specialist, pass

game specialist and nickelbacks coach. prior to that, sorensen, jaguars special teams coach in 2021, spent eight years with the seahawks as an assistant defensive backs and secondary coach. he replaces former dc steve wilks, who led the defense last season, was let go days after the super bowl. espn also reports the niners are expected to hire that guy, brandon staley , as their assistant head coach. staley spent the past two plus seasons as the chargers head coach and was the rams dc in 2020. he replaces anthony lynn, who moved on to washington for a different job. the warriors have a shot at a perfect four game road trip when they take on the celtics tomorrow at 1230, right here on abc seven, which will be followed by after the game. the dubs had some trouble on the plane getting out of new york into toronto, didn't get in their hotel until mid-morning. steph curry looked ready. steve kerr, though, even got a jumper in after an early timeout and some frustration. but the dubs woke up 21 year old jonathan kuminga. he doesn't need sleep putting the raptors on all kinds of posters as the dubs won by 15. they're 32 and 27. ninth in
