tomorrow. spencer >> more of this, but no more tornado warnings. there was actually a waterspout off shore, you know, to see uh, which is a tornado over water. but nothing ever touched down on land. so we're fortunate. let's take a look at live doppler seven. you can see that there is a line of showers that means some steady downpours. now moving right through the santa cruz mountains onto parts of the peninsula, down into the south bay, sunnyvale and um, well, saratoga. getting some downpours right now. it's hard to see the small print from where i'm standing, san jose. and that's all moving over to the mount hamilton area, where of course it will likely snow because of the cold air accompanying this rainfall in some of our higher peaks. so there's the pattern right there. the showers are developing offshore and moving quickly onshore, but they're fairly widely scattered. this is a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tomorrow. we expect more periods of showers, brief downpours, maybe some snow on the peaks, gusty wind at times. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight. notice overnight the scattered nature of the showers. we won't

see widespread heavy rainfall, but there will be wet spots tonight and tomorrow i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. >> karina. all right, we'll be looking forward to that. thank you. spencer stretches of interstate 80 remain buried under heavy snow through the tahoe area, and the storm is keeping highway patrol officers very busy. this is what things look like at donner summit and near kings beach. yeah, just snowed in. officers stationed close to the california nevada border are spending the weekend rescuing drivers who try to beat blizzard conditions. if you're planning on heading that way before the weekend is over, the chp suggests you rethink that plan. >> the road is closed at this point, or they're holding traffic uh- caltrans is trying the best they can on uh. we have zero visibility up here on the summit to get over, uh, into nevada or from nevada, over into california. >> chain controls are required if you're traveling on highway 50. the blizzard warning issued by the national weather service

remains in effect through tomorrow. it is a tough night up in truckee. the wind is howling, blowing the snow all over the place. the roads are a mess and some people are going to have to do a lot of work if they want to get to their cars, because the snow has really piled up. it's going to be a while before they can get a break because the snow is still falling tonight. the pictures out of the sierra are stunning as the storm picked up. starting last night, we saw drivers getting stranded in the blizzard and needing help to get out. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with mountain locals and bay area residents who are hunkering down , where some digging out. interstate 80, in the northern california area and sierra nevada is closed from colfax to the nevada state line due to spinouts. >> interstate 80 remained closed saturday afternoon over donner summit. the winter storms slamming the sierra with rare blizzard conditions, creating a bone chilling mess. trucks were stranded in heavy snow, the chp

says. emergency personnel and tow trucks had a tough time reaching drivers. >> oh my gosh, such an epic storm. definitely. especially in march. >> renee adelman from marin county is riding out the blizzard in south lake tahoe. our house was rocking last night. >> there were gale force winds. the windows were creaking. um, it it was the worst that i've seen in a few years. >> this was the view from renee's place before the blizzard. and after getting out. will be challenging. >> this is our neighbor's house, by the way, that the snow is up to halfway up their door. um, but we brought groceries with us and supplies, so we didn't have to go to the grocery store. and we figured that we were just going to stay home today and we'll see what the ski conditions are like tomorrow. right now, i mean, we're working to open the mountain, but it's this storm is coming down heavy, fast and hard with really high winds. so it's going to take some time for us to get back open. >> ski resorts like palisades tahoe were closed saturday due to severe weather and unbeliev.

wind gusts overnight on top siberia ridge, which is the top part of our mountain. >> we were reaching wind uh- up to 190mph, which is you know, i'm pretty sure it's hurricane force winds. >> so we're obviously going to be seeing a lot of this today. my neighbors are uh- did going out retired abc seven news photographer randy davis lives in truckee, where the snow is being measured in feet. >> i'm walking on the deck in over two feet of powder, light snow, very light snow. >> but there's a significant amount of it. we filled our car's up with gas. not that we're going to go anywhere it looks like it's going to be a while before anyone gets out of town. >> cornell. bernard abc seven news a lot of work to do there. >> none of the lifts at heavenly mountain resort are running, and it's easy to see why the continuous snowfall and wind was just too much. so they closed for the day. the nevada side is

closed because of the road conditions. there is an event planned for tomorrow evening at heavenly weather permitting, for a second day in a row. a number of lake tahoe ski resorts remain shut down by the storm, and that includes sugar bowl resort. they posted this video on social media saying they got 20 to 24in of snow overnight. a few resorts are open with reduced operations . you get cold just looking at that video in the sierra. mammoth mountain has already seen two feet of snow in the storm. the ski area is closed today. there's low visibility and powdery conditions on the slopes. more snow is on the way and the forecast plus strong winds of up to 95mph are expected through tomorrow. we'll warming shelters are opening up across the bay area tonight as the rain and cold temperatures continue. abc seven reporter ryan curry spoke with organizers at two shelters who say this

service saves lives. >> fresh food and cupcakes for the dozen people who checked into the alameda warming shelter saturday. for some, it's either spend the night here or possibly spend it outside. where would you be if you didn't have a place like this to stay tonight? >> honestly, i don't know. >> it's a vital resource, one that allows them to avoid potentially dangerous weather conditions, fulfilling, nurturing. >> um, deprives me of being cold . >> christ episcopal church in alameda teamed up with the city and other churches to provide a place for the city's unhoused population. christ church used to only offer a space like this a couple times a week. during the winter months, but with the last two years seeing intense storms, they expanded this year they're operating until march 14th, a space where they can be cared for, get food, um, feel connected to the greater community and hopefully get some more resources to lead them towards paths for housing. the bay area is once again enduring

another strong storm, this one bringing intense winds and high surf along the coast. >> that's why we stay away. but look at it from afar and cold air. >> it is expected to drop below 40 degrees in some spots. one of those spots is sonoma, where the city also opened up a warming shelter. >> we realized the cold temperatures, especially with the wind chill, um, in the early mornings. um, both last night and tomorrow. so, um, warranted us doing something for our most vulnerable population. >> because for those staying in these shelters, there is a comfort knowing they can stay safe. >> if it means a lot to me, it's like all most opening a key to a door to your own apartment, but it's not yours. but almost like that. >> safety in the east bay ryan curry abc seven news. >> in the south bay, caltrans says a slide on highway nine in santa clara county will hopefully be cleared by monday evening. traffic is blocked between sanborn road and redwood gulch road near saratoga. added rainfall is causing concern that

debris could come down onto the roadway. a tanker truck overturned on interstate 880 this morning, causing a fuel spill and a traffic pileup near fifth avenue. it happened after a car hit the median around 2:30 a.m. and stalled out in the second lane as it was disabled in the lane. >> uh- truck was unable to avoid that disabled vehicle and struck it. it was a fuel truck that ended up the trailer overturning on to its side on the roadway, which resulted in a hazardous material spill. >> an estimated 500 gallons of fuel spilled out, up to 150 gallons of it went down. a storm drain. crews cleaned up and reopened the lanes this afternoon, and there were no injuries. the storm left behind a mess at san francisco national cemetery in the presidio, a 50 foot eucalyptus tree fell onto several gravesites earlier today. it also landed on a water main, causing it to break. a tree trimming company and san francisco firefighters cleaned up the damage. the string of

family of a three year old boy killed inside a santa clara home last week, ivan martinez alvarado was found dead. the result of a gunshot wound. the boy's mother told police her live in boyfriend shot her son, a 24 year old man identified as sergio colon gomez, was taken into custody. san francisco unified school district has announced a plan that could ultimately lead to closed schools within the next two years, the chronicle reports. superintendent matt wayne has outlined a plan to address the loss of about 10,000 students since 2015. that plan could involve the shuttering of an undisclosed number of schools by fall of 2025. wayne says there are no specific schools being targeted for now. the new plan comes as the district is addressing several major issues, including a massive budget shortfall and replaced by a faulty payroll system. the city of san francisco hasn't given up on trying to get pandas to the zoo, according to the sf standard. mayor london breed asked chinese president xi

storm is over. for many locations in the in the northern sierra and here in the bay area, we've had quite a bit of rainfall. although as you look at live doppler seven right now, you can see that the rainfall is sort of spotty. but down in the south bay and in the santa cruz mountains, we've got a line of heavy downpours right now just drenching that area. there is light rain in other locations, but it's becoming more widespread. it's becoming lighter as we get later into the evening hours. so let's take a look at our storm impact scale. this is a level one storm through tomorrow. we'll see more periods of showers with some brief downpours, snow on the higher bay area peaks because there's cold air coming along with this storm. it'll be gusty at times. forecast animation starting at midnight shows scattered showers overnight, although again cold enough to produce some snow over our highest peaks and this storm will become weaker and the rainfall lighter as we get into the daytime hours tomorrow. but there will be some wet spots continuing through tomorrow and even into monday and tuesday. so rainfall estimates additional rain from o this evening into 11:00 monday night, generally

under a quarter of an inch south of the golden gate. a little bit more rain than that up in the north bay. and for tomorrow morning, 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the north bay. we have a frosted advisory. in effect, temperatures will drop down to about 34 degrees and over in the sierra. once again, a blizzard warning in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. we could see 5 to 10ft or more of snow above 5000ft. by the time this storm ends. and of course, we have wind gusts up at crazy levels 75 to 100mph. back here in the bay area right now, we have breezy conditions near the coast, but the wind is getting calmer and calmer as he gets later. it's chilly though, about 3 to 5 degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. so when we go to look at some current temperature readings down to upper 40s, san francisco, oakland, hayward, san mateo, 46 degrees 50 at san jose and half moon bay up in the north bay and over in the east bay. it's well down to 41 right now at santa rosa and petaluma and low to mid 40s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. and let's take a look at our forecast headlines

overnight showers, some snow in the higher peaks, possibly some thunder. all that chances a diminishing tomorrow. scattered showers and then going into early next week monday tuesday. still a chance of more wet and unsettled weather overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 30s in the inland north bay. over in the inland east bay, upper 30s and generally everywhere else. low to mid 40s. highs tomorrow right in the mid 50s. i mean 54, 55, 56 degrees. not any higher than that. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so we have three more days of level one storms. so that means light storms mainly light rain and showers and breezy. but again even with the light rain there could be an occasional brief downpour. then on wednesday it starts to get a little sunnier and thursday and friday we expect very sunny and milder days with high temperatures getting back into the mid 60s and towards next weekend, saturday, sunday and increase in clouds that does not necessarily mean rainfall, just looks like some some increasing clouds next

injuries. among the devastating wildfires in texas, a miraculous story of survival. one woman narrowly escaped her house after it went up in flames. she said she had only seconds to get out. >> it wasn't seconds and it was at my back door and i was trying to get dog kennels and i couldn't. i had to leave and then i had to drive through fire to get out of there. i was going to die. >> she managed to evacuate the region with thousands of others. officials say the smoke house creek fire is now the largest and most destructive fire in texas history. it's already burned through more than 1 million acres in the northeastern texas panhandle, and is expected to spread. it was 15% contained as of this afternoon. governor gavin newsom is calling for more cooperation from gop congressional members on immigration issues after his latest stop along the california mexico border. the governor was briefed by the california national guard and us border patrol late friday night. he

the peak of their roof sticking up out of the water. >> valley water is trying to give residents along the creek a little more peace of mind. the flood protection agency is literally building a barrier between water and land, and a nine mile stretch of the coyote creek from montague expressway to tully road will soon be protected by these flood walls. >> when a creek overflows it, it basically exceeds the capacity of the water that the creek itself will carry. so when you build flood walls on either side , you're providing more of that space or volume for the water to be held back. >> a large stretch of the walls are installed near berryessa. they stand between 3 to 10ft tall, depending on the creek capacity. in that area. what you don't see is the 30ft of reinforced steel below the surface, providing a strong force to keep flood waters at bay. engineers tend to avoid the word never, so while they can't say 2017 will never happen again, valley water is confident these walls will work. a 20 year storm is essentially the design year, um, that we are designing this project around
