temperatures. >> good morning. it's sunday, march 3rd. i'm stephanie sierra, meteorologist lisa argen is in the weather center tracking a level one storm on our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. good morning. lisa >> hey steph, good morning to you. yes, we have a few showers out there but we're begin to turn a corner from this system as we look at live doppler seven right now, you can see a smattering of light showers pressing across the north bay out rdmount diablo. that rain snow mix a little pink there, indicating a little snow there about by mount saint helena. highway 128 129 near napa. wet weather and over into the east bay. here some scattered showers around blackhawk and as we get into the south bay, the 101 corridor there, morgan hill and mount hamilton, some snowy peaks. so this level one system, we could see some downpours from time to time throughout the day. gusty winds at times, but overall we've got cold temperatures in the north bay with our frost advisory through 9:00. look at all those 30s 40s by the bay

shore anywhere from 2 to 9 degrees colder. this morning. and here we go throughout the morning hours, the scattered rain throughout the north bay, 7:00. and as we get towards the noon hour, could see a few downpours from petaluma out by fairfield. and then you'll notice less rain today. the air still will be scattered showers. we're going to talk about when we warm up and see that sunshine that's in the seven day outlook. stephanie >> all right lisa thank you. stretches of interstate 80 are buried under snow through the tahoe area. and the storm is certainly keeping highway patrol officers extra busy this morning. this is what things look like at donner summit and near kings beach. officers close to the california nevada border have been helping drivers who are trying to beat these blizzard conditions. if you are planning on heading up that way before the weekend is over, chp suggests otherwise as the road is closed at this point, or they're holding traffic uh- caltrans is trying the best they can. >> in uh- we have zero visibility up here on the summit

to get over uh- into nevada or from nevada, over into california. >> not only that, chain controls are required if you're traveling on highway 50. the blizzard warning issued by the national weather service does remain in effect until 10 a.m. here's another reason not to drive there. video overnight shows snow blowing all over the place as wind howls. take a look at this. this is what it looks like for people who live in truckee, and the snow continues to pile up this weekend. this morning, people who are from the bay area but in the sierra right now are hunkering down and waiting to get home. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to some of those people who say the snow has piled up fast into state 8-80 in the northern california area, and sierra nevada is closed from colfax to the nevada state line due to spinouts. >> interstate 80 remained closed saturday afternoon over donner summit. the winter storm slamming the sierra with rare blizzard conditions, creating a

bone chilling mess. trucks were stranded in heavy snow, the chp says. emergency personnel and tow trucks had a tough time reaching drivers. oh my gosh, such an epic storm. >> definitely. especially in march. >> renee adelman from marin county is riding out the blizzard in south lake tahoe. our house was rocking last night. >> there were gale force winds. the windows were creaking. um, it it was the worst out that i've seen in a few years. >> this was the view from renee's place before the blizzard and after getting out will be challenging. >> this is our neighbor's house, by the way, that the snow is up to halfway up their door. um, but we brought groceries with us and supplies so we didn't have to go to the grocery store, and we figured that we were just going to stay home today, and we'll see what the ski conditions are like tomorrow. right now, i mean, we're working to open the mountain, but it's this storm is coming down heavy, fast and hard with really high winds. so it's going to take some time for us to get back open ski resorts like palisades

tahoe were closed saturday due to severe weather and unbelievable wind gusts overnight on top. siberia ridge, which is the top part of our mountain, we were reaching wind uh- up to 190mph, which is, you know, i'm pretty sure it's hurricane force winds. we're obviously going to be seeing a lot of this today. >> my neighbors are, uh, digging out retired abc seven news photographer randy davis lives in truckee, where the snow is being measured in feet. i'm walking. on the deck in over two feet of powder. light snow, very light snow. but there's a significant amount of it. we filled our cars up with gas. not that we're going to go anywhere for. it looks like it's going to be a while before anyone gets out of town. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news now all of the lists lifts that is at heavenly mountain resort are closed, and it's easy to see from this picture why the resort closed.

>> because of the continuous snowfall and strong winds we've been telling you about. the nevada side is closed because of the road conditions. now, if the weather permits, heavenly says it will hold its big air show featuring a pro skier and rider stunt show along with a party today. now other lake tahoe ski resorts remain shut down by the storm, though that includes sugar bowl ski resort. it posted this stunning video showing how snowden some people are, they can't even get through the door there. the resort says it got 20 to 24in of snow overnight into saturday, so as you can imagine, that number has increased since then. a few resorts are open with reduced operations. hear the howling there. mammoth mountain ski area is also closed today.here's low visibility and powdery conditions on the slopes. at last check, the mountain received over two feet of snow. now here in the bay area, p-g-and-e's crews have been working around the clock, restoring power to thousands of

residents who lost electricity during the storm, according to p-g-and-e's. outage map. there are fewer outages to report, which is good news. this morning, though one of the largest areas affected is in the east bay, where about 140 people are still without electricity. in vallejo, we warming shelters are open across the bay area as the rain and cold temperatures continue. abc seven news reporter ryan curry explains how this service saves lives. >> fresh food and cupcakes for the dozen people who checked into the alameda warming shelter saturday. for some, it's either spend the night here or possibly spend it outside. where would you be if you didn't have a place like this to stay tonight? honestly i don't know. it's a vital resource, one that allows them to avoid potentially dangerous weather conditions, fulfilling, nurturing. >> um, deprives me of being cold . >> christ episcopal church in alameda teamed up with the city and other churches to provide a place for the city's unhoused

population. christ church used to only offer a space like this a couple times a week during the winter months, but with the last two years seeing intense storms, they expanded. this year they're operating until march 14th, a space where they can be cared for, get food, and, um, feel connected to the greater community and hopefully get some more resources to lead them towards paths for housing. the bay area is once again enduring another strong storm. this one bringing intense winds and high surf along the coast. >> that's why we stay away. but look at it from afar and cold air. >> it is expected to drop below 40 degrees in some spots. one of those spots is sonoma, where the city also opened up a warming shelter. >> we realized the cold temperatures, especially with the wind chill in the early mornings. um, both last night and tomorrow. so, um, warranted us doing something for our most vulnerable population. >> because for those staying in these shelters, there is a comfort knowing they can stay

safe. >> it means a lot to me. it's like almost opening a key to a door to your own apartment, but it's not yours. but almost like that. >> safety in the east bay. ryan curry abc seven news. >> the storm has left behind a mess at the san francisco national cemetery in the presidio, a 50 foot eucalyptus tree fell onto several gravesites. it also landed on a water main, causing it to break. a tree trimming company and san francisco firefighters did clean up the damage, though. in the south bay, caltrans says a slide on highway nine in santa clara county may be cleared by tomorrow evening. now, this morning, traffic is still blocked between sanborn road and redwood gulch road, right near saratoga. the incoming rain is causing concern that debris could come down onto the roadway. all right, let's check in with lisa. how's it looking outside? >> well, we're still looking at not only the rain here, but the snow in the mountains for the greater lake tahoe area. this blizzard warning takes us through 4:00 on monday morning. so still looking at an

protesters near the israeli embassy. police blocking the street where you can see an altercation between an officer and protesters. emotions running high. tara campbell abc seven news. happening today, a rally in san francisco is set to show unity for the jewish community. >> the march begins at 130 this afternoon from the embarcadero and will go down market street, ending at city hall. now that's where speakers. mayor london breed, state senator scott wiener and sheryl sandberg will be a part of the rally happening at 3:00. staying in san francisco now sf, usd announced a plan that could lead to closed schools within the next two years. the chronicle reports. superintendent matt wayne outlined a plan to address the loss of about 10,000 students since 2015. that plan could force an undisclosed number of schools to close by fall of 2025. now, wayne says there are no specific schools being targeted. for now, the new plan

dianne feinstein as u.s. senator . she is falling behind republican steve garvey. democratic congressman adam schiff and congresswoman katie porter. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin spent the day urging residents living in cramped quarters to vote in tuesday's primary. he's trying to build support for proposition a, a $300 million bond that would help pay for more affordable housing. peskin talked with voters living in single room occupancy residences in chinatown, san francisco has a very large chinese american population. >> and getting the word out, getting it out in language in cantonese and mandarin is very important to winning. and the chinese community really understands how important affordable housing is. affordable negative to negatively that is, affect the character of san francisco neighborhoods. >> passage of prop eight will require a yes from two thirds of the votes cast. we are now two days away from super tuesday with primaries scheduled in 15

different states, including here in california. polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m, and you can take your mail in ballot there, or to a drop box or a county elections office as long as it's delivered by 8:00. if you prefer to mail it, your ballot must be postmarked no later than tuesday, and you can actually still register to vote. california allows people to do same day voter registration. continuing our storm coverage this morning, take a look. the snow continues to fall and move fast because of those strong winds in the sierra. this is a live camera atop heavenly mountain resort. a blizzard warning in that area has been extended to 4 a.m. monday morning. as we mentioned, most of the resorts are closed today amid this near record breaking blizzard. lisa is tracking the impacts up north and here at home. when can we expect this rain to taper off? >> well, you know, we're certainly getting behind it all. we still have some scattered showers. we still have a couple of feet left in the mountains,

but things will be settling down in the worst is over with. so we are going to get behind the low and see a few more systems head our way before we break out into some more typical bay area weather, which would be sunshine, right? we haven't had any of that in quite a while. here's a look at live doppler seven and you can snow in the mountains. and as we get clor here, still a winter storm warning through 10:00 for lake and mendocino county. we're looking at a couple of inches of snow above 1000ft. and certainly that has verified middletown, lakeport and clear lake. certainly wintry out there by vacaville 80. their wet weather and certainly down towards napa. a few scattered light showers. 580 in livermore by the blackhawk and mount diablo. some wet weather right along the coast. capitola morgan hill south of 101 and gilroy. some scattered showers, so that's an improvement, right? if we're looking to dry out today, we've

got the scattered showers. could see a downpour at times, but overall we are drying out. looking at a few showers for your monday and i'm just talking a few level one system. and then by wednesday, thursday, friday dry conditions, sunnier and milder weather headed our way. so hour by hour this is 7:00 and you'll see that we have a smattering of showers around the bay stopping this at 330. and you'll notice from the coast, san francisco, maybe up towards san rafael and san jose. a few showers, but as we go into the overnight hours, kind of quiet, right. and then into monday, a lot of cloud cover, maybe a shower or two. this is tuesday. a system wants to drop out of the north, and then it's not really until tuesday night where we see this next system tuesday into wednesday, dropping maybe another 10th of an inch of rain. so that's the more significant system on the way compared to what we're going to have today and tomorrow. this is rainfall totals through tomorrow afternoon and notice anywhere from a couple hundredths perhaps

a 10th to 0.16, in novato. so that's nothing right. compared to what we've seen. here's a look at the winds though you'll notice today the winds are going to be quite breezy out there through sunday afternoon. up to 30 miles an hour in oakland and hayward. so with below average temperatures and those breezy west northwest winds, it's going to feel pretty chilly out there. still below average. as we get into your tuesday as well. so until 4:00 on monday, we're modified. seeing this as you noticed, we've already picked up about five seven feet. so 1 to 2ft is what's left for donner and kirkwood throughout the day today. and they'll be that other system though throughout the middle of the week for the sierra nevada 56, in oakland today. so coming up about 2 to 3 degrees, maybe a few peeks of sun 59 san jose and then another chilly night for a frost advisory once again for the north bay with low to mid 30s there. low 40s on the peninsula level one system today looking at a bit of a break for your monday, maybe a few showers and

approved this message. live. good morning. >> lisa is tracking the latest on this level one storm today. and again, i woke up to the rain. >> yes we did. and it's slick out there. it's cold. very cold. i mean, temperatures really struggle to make it into the low 50s yesterday. here's a look at live doppler seven where you notice we have still some showers rotating in from the west to the east. but we're not talking about thunderstorms today. and a look at the south bay to start out where we have more active weather from santa cruz and down south of morgan hill, you can see mount hamilton , little rain, snow mix up towards mount diablo and the livermore valley. fiv8-80, some wet pavement. not only the scattered showers, but that winter storm warning for the next few hours, lake mendocino county with another couple inches of snow below 1000ft. so level one system today scattered

showers, some snowy peaks, breezy winds at times, and the frost advisory through 9:00 for parts of the valleys of the north bay. that's where we have the 30s. it is 38, in santa rosa, 39 sonoma, 42 in concord, 43. palo alto, and certainly colder than yesterday. 4 to 7 degrees colder and as we go through the next couple of hours, you see the showers out there. they'll continue to be with us throughout the afternoon. some of them moderate, but they'll be scattered and we'll talk about less rain for your monday coming up. >> all right lisa, thank you. now these string of storms is also dropping some hail. we've heard reports from placer county all the way to the bay. and this was the scene in contra costa county, a family in el sobrante said they saw a layer of hail in their yard. and on top of their cars. now that's hail just pounding down in the peninsula. this video was taken in san mateo. as lisa told us, rain will continue to move

through the area on and off throughout the day. now in the sierra nevada, heavy snowfall with a blizzard warning continues this morning. and in texas, more extreme weather. the state's largest wildfire ever has killed at least two people. here's abc news reporter chuck sivertsen in the sierra nevada mountains, hit hard by a powerful winter storm with blizzard conditions and a high risk for avalanches as wind gusts up to 70mph reported and the wind. >> it was so windy. we see big storms like this, but when they say blizzard, that means wind, forecasters say some areas could see several feet of snow by the time it's over. >> the storm, expected to last through tuesday, the next round arriving late monday in truckee. some people overwhelmed. >> i've lived here my entire life and i'm over it. the storm forcing some ski resorts to

close 200 to 300 vehicles stuck in blizzard conditions along interstate 80, which was shut down friday night for more than seven miles. >> the california highway patrol says nobody was injured and eventually everyone got out. further east in the texas panhandle, strong winds fueling the largest wildfire in the. state's history. more than a million acres destroyed by the smokehouse creek fire. as many as 500 structures destroyed. the national interagency fire center says the fire has spread to oklahoma. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york among the devastating wildfires in texas, a miraculous story of survival. >> one woman narrowly escaped her house after it went up in flames, and she says she had only seconds to get out. >> it wasn't seconds and it was at my back door and i was trying to get dog kennels and i couldn't. i. had to leave, and then i had to drive through fire to get out of there. i was going

to die just horrifying. >> she managed to evacuate the region with thousands of others. officials say the smokehouse creek fire is now the largest and most destructive fire in texas history. it's already burned through more than 1 million acres in the northeastern texas panhandle, and is expected to spread. as you just heard, it was 15% contained as of this morning. now, the countdown to super tuesday is on. former president trump and former south carolina governor nikki haley are ramping up their campaigns. in three days, 15 states and one territory hold primaries, with more than one third of 2400 delegates for the republican nominee up for grabs. now polls showing trump vastly ahead of haley by 60 points nationally and leading in every super tuesday state. that's according to 5.38. but the former president, facing 91 criminal charges could be on trial in at least one case before the november election. haley saying

million acres of feet of rain across the state runs off pavement, roofs and sidewalks every year. if it was captured and treated, it could supply more than a quarter of california's urban water use, or 7 million southern california homes each year. now, the los angeles county already collects about 200,000 acres of feet of runoff, enough to fill about 100,000 olympic sized swimming pools. and the south bay valley water wants to ensure future storms won't cause coyote creek to flood, like we saw in 2017. abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey shows us how they are working to protect communities in the flood zone. >> with every major storm that hits san jose, residents that live near coyote creek can't help but say a silent prayer. a wish that nothing like what happened in 2017 ever happens again. everywhere we're standing right now is basically underwater. >> this, yes, you'd have been standing at least ankle deep in

water, up here if you had gone over to like 17th street. there are some houses where you would just see the peak of their roof sticking up out of the water. >> valley water is trying to give residents along the creek a little more peace of mind. the flood protection agency is literally building a barrier between water and land. in a nine mile stretch of the coyote creek from montague expressway to tully road will soon be protected by these flood walls. >> when a creek overflows it, it basically exceeds the capacity of the water that the creek itself will carry. so when you build flood walls on either side, you're providing more of that space or volume for the water to be held back. >> a large stretch of the walls are installed near berryessa. they stand between 3 to 10ft tall, depending on the creek capacity. in that area. what you don't see is the 30ft of reinforced steel below the surface, providing a strong force to keep flood waters at bay. engineers tend to avoid the word never, so while they can't say 2017 will never happen again, valley water is confident these walls will work. a 20 year

little bit of snow above 2000ft. 49 in oakland and is 47 in hayward, 45 san jose. but look at all the 30s from napa, sonoma to santa rosa. so through 9:00, that's why we have our frost advisory for the interior valleys of the north bay. so some scattered showers today could see a heavier downpour at times, but otherwise a way less rain than we had yesterday. tomorrow we're looking at a dry day. could see an isolated shower and then bringing in a level one system for your tuesday. they could linger into early wednesday, but the bulk of the day on wednesday will be dry. and then we get into sunny and 60s for thursday and friday. so today, here's a look at the picture where you'll notice a few isolated showers at times so that area of low pressure still to the north of us, we're still on the back side of it, allowing for the on and off rain showers. we'll get into your monday there and notice the cloud cover. this is 330. could see a light shower, but the bulk of the day

is dry. tuesday though watching the afternoon and this line of rain coming in by the evening. so tuesday into early wednesday, all of these systems, anywhere from a 10th of an inch or less. this takes us through monday. in the afternoon and check it out. only a couple hundredths 5/100 in san francisco. so maybe a little bit more than that. if you get a heavier downpour, but otherwise really just the tail end of all of this, allowing for still a cold, unsettled pattern with the breezy winds. as we get in towards about 1:00, winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. oakland near that in hayward. so it's another raw kind of day out there, but less rain and we'll be looking at the snow still throughout the day today until 4:00 on monday, 6 to 12in of snow with about 18in at the crest. and then those winds at the surface 45 miles an hour, up to 100 miles an hour in the upper elevations. so here's a look at that 1 to 2 foot totals through your tuesday highs
