inspire an event today in san francisco is elevating sisterhood. >> abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. we definitely thought, you know, maybe there was a little too much hype at first. >> we went from 0 to 100 pretty fast. >> rare blizzard conditions are pounding the sierra, closing roads and ski resorts, and the snow keeps coming. thank you for joining us i'm j.r stone. let's get the latest on what has been a brutal forecast. abc seven weather anchor spencer christian track the snow and rain. you see all those colors on our live doppler seven radar. spencer how long is this going to last? >> beginning to wind down a little bit right now jr but some of our heaviest rain may already have fallen for the day, but we've still got some downpours. as you pointed out. here's a look at live doppler seven. you see those vivid colors of yellow and orange? i'll close in a little bit and show you where the steadiest and heaviest rain is falling right now, and it's

over in the east bay. just moved across the bay from the peninsula into the hayward, san leandro uh- and uh- castro valley area. yeah, that's castro valley and san ramon getting a little bit of that as well. now that's moving rather swiftly and is a look at the animation. you can see that there's not a lot developing offshore right now. so we may be going into a quieter period tonight. now this storm is a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tonight. more showers. although isolated. brief downpours, snow on our peaks and gusty wind at times. a closer look at the forecast a little bit later. >> j.r. spencer, thank you so much. that system that's creating blizzard conditions in tahoe is bringing us rain, wind and downright cold temperatures here in the bay area. the abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live in sonoma, where an emergency shelter is open to help people stay safe. cornell yeah, jr it's going to be super cold tonight. >> so that is why this emergency shelter behind me will be opening here in just a few

hours. giving folks who may be living on the street a warm, safe place to ride out all of those cold temperatures. meanwhile up in the sierra, that wild, epic storm is not over yet . fierce blizzard conditions creating a snowmageddon in the high sierra this weekend with high winds and heavy snow, whiteout conditions, and hurricane force winds unfolding at the top of donner summit, where some stranded drivers had to be rescued by chp interstate 80, in both directions remain closed sunday afternoon. >> guys, chp truckee out here so i just wanted to say thank you for your patience. we're trying to get this roadway open, as you can tell, a little bit of snowfall here on highway 50. >> caltrans says a snow slide on echo summit trapped several cars and closed the road for about 30 minutes. luckily, no one hurt. >> oh my gosh, it's so windy. wow >> bay area resident renee adelman is riding out the blizzard in south lake tahoe, where wind and blowing snow has

been relentless. snowed all day yesterday and then today we woke up to about a foot and a half of fresh snow. >> my neighbor's house is the snow is almost up to the top of their their doorways, but many roads are still too dangerous for travel. >> this skier had the right idea to get around on venice drive. check out the unreal conditions at the gondola station at palisades tahoe. this resort had to close on sunday. heavenly resort was opened and look how many skiers showed up to enjoy some fresh powder digging out could take a while. kevin dupuis was trying to clear a path in truckee, but not having much luck, started trying to blow this snow blower, but uh- i might have broken it so me and my buddies are trying to fix it and get it running in the bay area. no snow, but cold temperatures are a concern in the sonoma valley for unhoused folks. this emergency warming shelter is now open. >> unfortunately, here in the city of sonoma and in the valley

sonoma valley, we don't have permanent uh- uh- winter shelters and so we've established a, a, um, emergency winter shelter that we can open as needed. >> yeah. the shelter is scheduled to open at 7 p.m. and close tomorrow morning at eight. meantime um, the chp is asking all drivers to hit pause on any trips they may be thinking about to tahoe. because it's just too hazardous, as you saw. but live in sonoma, cornell bernard abc seven news. >> cornell. thank you so much. that blizzard that cornell showed us hitting the sierra has forced several ski resorts to close today with conditions just two dangerous palace tahoe sierra at tahoe homewood and mount rose ski tahoe all closed today. several other resorts have a limited number of lifts open resorts are reporting anywhere from 4 to 6ft of new snow over the past three days. now a look at the roads in the sierra. many buried under snow

tuesday, march 5th. in addition to the president primary, other big races are on the ballot here in california, including one to complete the rest of senator dianne feinstein's terms and another to decide who will serve the full six year terms. the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party, will advance. also, california's 12th congressional district, which represents much of alameda county, barbara lee held the seat for more than two decades, but it's now up for grabs as lee eyes the senate and district 16 that covers the south bay, mid peninsula and coastal san mateo county in november, anna eshoo announced she would retire after three decades in congress. turnout is expected to be critical. it's at about 15% so far today. san francisco democrats for change held a get out the vote blitz in hopes of raising that number. the democratic county central committee took over debow's park

to be ceasefire talks today. today, an israeli newspaper report that israel boycotted them after hamas rejected a demand by israel for a list of hostages that are still alive. officials from the us, israel and egypt are in cairo for those negotiations. on another front, vice president kamala harris is set to meet with israeli minister benny gantz tomorrow at the white house. they're expected to discuss a cease fire and hostage releases along with ways to increase aid. a show of support today in san francisco from some powerful figures looking to send a message about anti-jewish hate. there is no place for hatred in san francisco, mayor london breed joined several speakers and protesters for a march against anti-semitism. the march ended with a rally at city hall plaza. organizers say it's a response to escalating acts against the

lanterns. it will run monthly until november. the bhangra and beats night market will also return to downtown in may, and the sunset night market will be back in june of or july. thousands of people came out to the night markets last year. looks like a great time all around. well, absolutely. tell you what's not a great time right now spencer christian driving in certain areas in certain areas. >> you're right. i'm glad you said in certain areas because we've had scattered showers. but where we have had showers, some have been quite heavy. yeah. here's a look at live doppler seven. right now you can see the well what i'm talking about. the showers are widely scattered, but there are some heavy downpours. that one, especially right now just moving over into the east bay across the from the peninsula, across the bay, over to hayward and castro valley, out towards dublin. that's some pretty steady rain fall right now. but as you look at the animation here, you can see that there's not a lot of activity developing offshore. so it sort of indicates that the storm will be winding down as we get into the evening hours. it's still a

level one storm, though, and the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. so through tonight and into tomorrow, we expect periods of isolated or scattered showers, brief downpours, some snow on our bay area peaks as cold air accompanies the storm, and it will be gusty at times. forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. shows how the storm is going to weaken later tonight, and we'll see very widely scattered showers, very light raindrops or raindrops. some very light rainfall is what i'm trying to say. and there won't be much left of this early tomorrow morning as the morning commute begins. so that's probably good news for morning commuters. in fact, by 11:00 tonight, we expect additional rainfall totals to be under five hundredths of an inch for most of the bay area. meanwhile, heavy snow continues to fall in the sierra blizzard warning in effect there until midnight tonight. and then even after midnight, it's going to be a winter storm warning until wednesday morning. back to the bay area. right now we're looking at winds gusting up to about 37mph at oakland. those are our strongest gusts at the moment. it's pretty breezy everywhere else though, and the

temperature change over the last 24 hours were about 2 to 4 degrees. warm air in most locations than at this time yesterday. live view from sutro tower. looking out over san francisco, where it's currently 50 degrees 49. in oakland, low to mid 50s at hayward, san jose, san mateo and half moon bay. nice view of the western sky. a part of it is sunny. part of it is cloudy looking from emeryville, 49 degrees santa rosa. right now. petaluma 4850 degrees at fairfield, napa, concord and livermore. let's check out our forecast headlines . occasional showers through tomorrow. the tuesday light rain and showers a little wetter than tomorrow will be. but then wednesday through friday, sunnier, drier and milder weather will prevail. we're looking at a frost advisory again in the north bay for a 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. overnight temperatures down to about 35 degrees, so it'll be pretty chilly there, but other locations won't be quite so chilly right around the bay shoreline. we'll see. lows tonight in the low 40s and the inland east bay upper 30s to near 40. then tomorrow look for high temperatures under mainly cloudy skies with a few pockets

of showers here and there. mainly in the upper 50s, so it'll be another chilly day coming our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast on tuesday wednesday uh- rain, light rain and showers tuesday and morning showers are likely on wednesday before we start to get some clearing so both of those days we're going to call it level one storms. and then after the clearing on wednesday afternoon we'll have two sunny days on thursday and friday warming up to mid to upper 60s. those two days. and then clouds return next weekend. >> and hopefully those wind gusts will subside. >> oh they will. yeah, they'll weaken overnight. so we won't have any more of those 40 mile per hour gusts after midnight. >> thank you so much. okay. you know, at least at one point we thought we had the warriors today to watch chris. >> we had we got a chance to watch him. >> yeah. >> and that was about it. yeah up in sports. so warriors wrap up their road trip with a game in boston. you saw it right here on abc seven. and that road winning streak. it just blew up in beantown. celtics crushed the warriors look away but come

stormy weather gusting into the bay area right now. you see all of that green and all of that yellow. get an updated forecast on abc seven news at six. the blizzard that's dumping dozens of inches of snow on lake tahoe is a hassle for some, but for a couple of locals, it is perfect weather. these are ideal play date conditions for echo and yuba, a pair of siberian huskies who live in south lake tahoe with their owner. you can see the dogs running through the

very thick snow on saturday, the owner says. echoed the black and white husky will power through any amount of snow, while yuba, who's an older dog, usually likes to lay back and let her partner carve a path. you know, spencer and chris, i wish if we were all crawling through this snow right here up in the sierra, you could lead the way and carve a path for us. >> we leave. >> we leave that up to the young one over here. >> chris. yeah, i was going to say it's like a fullback and football. just lead the way. get to the hole. there in the cross hairs again. just as some residents try to dig out after a crippling blizzard, another snow storm is on the way. and in texas, conditions are worsening as they battle a wildfire that's grown to more than five times the size of new york city. first, that monster storm on the west coast, hundreds of cars and trucks trapped in several feet of snow. first responders going vehicle to vehicle to get people out.
