>> yeah. hey, kristen and dan. yeah. stony point road and todd back open to traffic this afternoon. this is where that violent police chase ended with a suspect vehicle smashing through this fence. still lots of questions here. neighbors telling us what they heard. >> just a rapid fire of gunshots. you know, really loud gun. bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam. just all kinds of gunshots. >> dean stupak says he heard gunfire and tires squealing around midnight in west santa rosa. >> i heard tires squealing, you know, cars peeling out and racing back and forth. >> santa rosa police now investigating the incident involving sonoma county sheriff's deputies. it all began with a911 call from neighbors. >> they were advised a male subject was brandishing a firearm. >> the sonoma county sheriff says the male suspect had a rifle and was driving a small white sedan. >> the deputies arrived and saw the suspect, who quickly led

them on a pursuit. during the pursuit, the suspect fired at the deputies and they returned fire. ultimately, the suspect crashed and subsequently died at the scene. >> that car crashing through this fence on stony point road, dean stupak says he heard yelling before the crash. >> i heard a deputy say, let me see your hands. and then that's all i heard. and right after he said, hands, i heard gunfire. >> police are not saying if the man was hit by gunfire. four deputies riding in separate cruisers suffered injuries, all taken to the hospital. one deputy suffered a head injury, another was shot in the leg and two suffered injuries to their hands. >> our deputy with the head injury is in critical but stable condition. as you can imagine. i'm concerned about my injured deputies and hope they all make a full and speedy recovery. >> for a time, the crime scene stretched two miles as investigators gathered evidence. >> we appreciate the public's patience with us. we have a large thoroughfare in our city closed off on multiple roads. um, and that is because we have

multiple scenes to investigate. >> yeah. the name of the suspect has not been released. police are still trying to determine what exactly happened here. the sheriff's department says they will release more information soon, including body worn camera footage. we're live in santa rosa. cornell, bernard. abc seven news, cornell. >> thank you. the massive blizzard in the sierra nevada mountains is finally blowing over. but the region is still dealing with the aftermath. some areas saw up to five inches of snow per hour through the storm that lasted for four days. a large stretch of interstate 80 closed down for several days as more than ten feet total dumped in some areas. more than 300 vehicles were stranded, which became a dangerous situation for many. tow truck drivers were very busy and officers were checking car to car. >> there's a lot of people and a lot of cars, some of them were there overnight, some of them got rescued and sent to the hospital or to the nearest hotel. >> we really need to focus on

the people in the vehicles. are you prepared to sit there for a while? do you have food? do you have water? do you have enough fuel in your vehicle to keep the heat going? >> the video was taken in south lake tahoe where this car was completely submerged, covered in the snow pile up on one person's driveway while the snow is paused. for now, there's still some more to come with another storm on the way tonight. >> well, skiers are wasting no time making the most of the additional snow in the sierra. this is video from kirkwood resort today, which was a very busy from the moment the lifts opened. woohoo! yay whoa! >> you think you're having fun? >> screams of joy from one skier at dodge ridge resort in pine crest. that's abc seven news photojournalist steve stifter enjoying the conditions after the storm. the temperature shut down most of the resorts in the area, having a blast. >> he's got a steady hand there. all right, more snow is coming to tahoe. indeed here in the bay area, we're in for some weather changes as well. abc seven weather anchor spencer christian tells us what is next. following

days of rain. spencer. yeah, christian. >> well, let's start with the sierra, where the blizzard now has ended, but there's still a snowstorm. it's still accumulating. but when we were forecast totals of 8 to 10ft, we were right. with the four day total snowfall, total shows sugarwell getting over ten feet of snow as soda springs nearly ten feet, kingvale 106in of snow. so the storm which we the warning i should say the blizzard warning has expired, but there's still a winter storm warning for a portion of the northern sierra, mainly to the north northwest of lake tahoe. that's in effect until 4 a.m. wednesday. so so the storm is not quite so strong as it was, but snow is still accumulating maybe another half foot or so will accumulate over the next 24 hours. snowpack in the sierra uh- at at or above 100% of average for most of the area. so that's good news. now getting back here to the bay area, we had some impressive three day rainfall totals. but as we look at live doppler seven now, you see we've got relatively calm conditions. maybe a sprinkle or two moving through the area

where to spend money and what will make the greatest difference in changing san francisco's reputation. if perception is everything, the state of union square depends on who you ask. >> it's night and day from when we came out of the pandemic. we have one of the most beautiful cities in the world. >> um, today it looks okay. >> it's a topic that's top of mind for city officials and local business owners who are attempting to figure out how to revitalize union square and change the city's doom loop reputation, including following the announcement that macy's plans to sell its union square location sometime over the next three years. one of those revitalization efforts is the powell street promenade refresh, which will replace these existing aluminum parklets with a new design. >> this is the gateway to san francisco. i can't think of a more important place to put resources to ensure that the downtown will recover. >> the idea is to make the promenade more inviting so that retailers will return, filling these empty storefronts, improving it and making it more

da, members of the group trying to keep her in office say she is doing what she was elected to do. >> any courthouse in alameda county, you will see deputies of her office are locking people up , and they're making sure people are accountable for, for what happened. the reality is, is crime didn't start when da price took office. and it's also going to exist in alameda county long beyond her time here with the boxes being dropped off it now begins the process where they have to count and validate each of the signatures. >> if all lines up, it gets turned over to the board of supervisors, who then have to set a special election date that could be as early as this spring. >> so hopefully in late april or maybe early may, there will be a special election. >> supporters of the district attorney believe the voters will back her. >> she was elected with 53% of the vote over a year ago, despite being hugely outspent by the establishment. the truth is the establishment lost their annoyed. they've dumped over $2 million into a campaign to oust her. >> but those in the recall

effort say even if some of the signatures won't count, they will still have enough for an election recall in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news apple has to pay nearly $2 billion for unfairly favoring apple music over other streaming services. >> that's the finding of the european union, which says apple bans rival apps like spotify from telling users about payment options available through their websites that would avoid the 30% fee charged. when people pay through apps downloaded with the app store. apple says the eu did not uncover any credible evidence of consumer harm, and vows to appeal this. >> all right, let's talk a little bit about the weather. this wet, dreary, rainy weather. we've had, especially as it drags on, can be a real downer for some people. >> it can be. so we want to brighten your day. how about this? ah, stunning rainbow in our very own dan noyes captured this wow perfect arch. >> i just ran into this man in the hallway. no wonder he was smiling today. i took that picture spanned from alcatraz to san francisco. spencer, that's a really fantastic shot. that's a

beautiful shot. >> beautiful shot. i guess there's not going to be a weather recall now. things are looking. things are looking up. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that conditions are relatively quiet right now. we have some clouds around little moisture in the air, and there might even be a spotty shower or two moving through the north bay. but basically we've got calm conditions right now. now there's a storm developing out at sea. as you can see on the wider image here is aiming down towards southern california. so it's going to miss the bay area, but it's close enough that it could generate some unsettled weather over the next couple of days, meaning a few clouds and a possibility of a sprinkle or two. here's our forecast animation starting at 5 p.m, and during the nighttime hours, we might see again a couple of isolated showers moving mainly through the north bay. looks like the remainder of the bay area will probably be rain free, and that pattern continues into through tomorrow, actually into early wednesday. so by wednesday night we're looking at rainfall totals for most of the bay area. only a couple of hundredths of an inch. but san francisco might actually get a quarter of an

inch of rain out of the unsettled weather. and up in the north bay, pretty much the same picture, up to about a quarter of an inch right now we're looking at temperature readings that are 2 to 5 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. so let's take a closer look at specific temperature readings. mid 50s right now at san francisco. and oakland we've got upper 50s at hayward, san mateo, 60 degrees at san jose. all the temperature readings looking northward and eastward. right now we've got, um, 52 degrees of petaluma. that's our coolest reading. and mid 50s at santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. these are the forecast headlines. unsettled weather for the next two days, thursday and friday, though, will bring us sunny and milder weather. yay for that. and over the weekend we'll see increasing clouds and a looks like an outside chance of some light rain developing. but we're not ready to call that one yet. overnight again, a couple of passing showers may move through the north bay. it'll be generally cloudy for the rest of us overnight lows generally in the mid to upper 40s and then high temperatures tomorrow under mixed sky conditions. a little bit of sun, a little bit of

clouds. we'll see highs of 59 at half moon bay, low 60s right around the bay shoreline. and as we move into the inland east bay, 6263 degrees at places like livermore, concord, antioch, up into fairfield, about 62 degrees north bay. highs upper 50s to about 60. and down in the south bay 65, in san jose. so very nice. mild weather in the south bay tomorrow. here's the accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow. of course. super tuesday uh- get out and rock the vote. the weather should not be an inhibiting factor in voting tomorrow. if you haven't voted already, then still a chance of a shower or two on wednesday, but mainly dry. and look at thursday and friday. sunny skies with high temperatures in the low to mid 60s. actually mainly mid 60s from the bay to our inland areas going into the weekend. the mild weather holds on but clouds will increase on saturday uh- sunday, oscar sunday here on abc and everywhere else too, but especially here at abc. also so it's the day that we spring forward to daylight savings time, right? >> yeah, i like the way you

southern california. apparently caused by a project meant to help save the fish. the san francisco chronicle reports. hundreds of chinook salmon were found dead near the iron gate dam, not far from the oregon border, but the fish suffered trauma while going through a tunnel created to let the river flow freely. state officials will now release the next set of salmon downstream to bypass the tunnel. the tunnel and the dam are one of four set to be demolished in northern california for a change in crabbing gear, could prevent delays to the start of dungeness crab season, which seems to happen all the time these days. >> a state agency just approved $650,000 to invest in ropeless fishing gear. gear with ropes linking buoys on the surface with the traps underwater is a leading cause of entanglement for migrating whales, which is often why the season is delayed for crab fishing. the problem is

so severe, dungeness crab season has been delayed. a number of times in recent years, sometimes drastically, to help test the gear, the government selected 20 dungeness crabbers to use it this spring to see how it works. >> live musical performances are coming to san francisco's market street. the initiative, called busket, is kicking off this sunday with 25 musicians. it will happen from fifth to eighth streets along market with restaurants and businesses connecting with the local artists. some places involved will be ikea or bakery and the strand theater. it will be a weekly event running from march until november. >> a hillside is on the verge of collapse in the east bay as we continue and the situation gets more precarious with every rain. but neighbors say the city of oakland is doing nothing about it. assessing that situation next, and a milestone that reproductive activists have pursued for decades, is now just about one week away. >> new information out today about an over the counter birth control pill

the oakland hills. a portion of tunnel road is collapsing into a dangerous landslide at bay forest drive, and neighbors say storms over the last week have made it even worse. but despite years of complaint to the city, it's still not fixed. here's abc seven news reporter leslie brinkly. >> oh, it's dreadful. i mean, there's a real risk that the whole road gets closed here, and it means that there's no access for many of the residents here. >> john corlett walked us down to what he feels is a disaster unfolding in slow motion. the erosion of tunnel road by the intersection of bay forest place, the views here are

astounding, where the crumbling two lane road narrows to just one lane as it caves in just north of the caldecott tunnel in the oakland hills. neighbor say they've been complaining for seven years, with the city putting up sandbags and tarps on the city's 3-1-1 site. numerous reports of the tunnel road collapse are documented as received last spring. residents say they've reached out to the mayor's office, the city council and the department of transportation to no avail. now they're getting alarmed at the idea of being stranded in their homes as they watch the erosion worsen over the last week. >> this is the second round of tarps in this storm season, and they're already washing away. and we can see that there's continued erosion underneath the tarps. it's worse. it's getting worse. even the last week it's gotten much worse. they've got to come out and fix this. it's

not acceptable. we pay our taxes with only one lane open. >> they worry about fire, police, utility crews, deliveries and emergency vehicles getting through to their neighborhood as the crumbling of the road accelerates, the city of oakland responded to abc seven news today, saying the hillside erosion at tunnel road, bay forest drive is an extremely complex repair, with the existing site constraints, the city of oakland will implement a permanent repair of the slope at this location. currently estimated at $850,000. oakland says they hope to draft an engineering design and repair the site this summer in the oakland hills. i'm leslie brinkly, abc seven news. >> california is sending national guard soldiers to texas to help fight a massive wildfire . governor newsom is activating the 146th airlift wing unit based in oxnard. he's also deploying a c-130j super hercules plane to assist in the

mission. the fire in the texas panhandle has burned 1.1 million acres in a week, making it the largest wildfire in texas history and bigger than california's largest ever wildfire. it's just 15% contained. >> police say a group of men in masks opened fire at an outdoor party in monterey county, killing four people and injuring three others. this happened about 6 p.m. in king city. police say several people were at a party outside a home when three men with dark masks and gloves got out of a silver car and shot at the group. three men died at the scene and a woman died at a nearby hospital. the suspects got back in the car and drove away. they still haven't been caught. king city is about 100 miles south of san jose. >> vice president kamala harris is calling for an immediate cease fire in gaza. it's the most forceful remarks yet from a top biden official, as hamas weighs a six week cease fire deal that's currently on the table. abc's reena roy has the latest. a strong message from vice president kamala harris as

the humanitarian crisis grows in gaza, the immense scale of suffering in gaza. >> there must be an immediate cease fire. >> hospital officials say this nine year old boy with cerebral palsy died in rafah because he didn't have access to the customized diet that he needed due to ongoing fighting. his father, sharing a picture of his son saying when the war broke out, everything was cut off from him and his condition deteriorated. harris meeting monday with israeli war cabinet member benny gantz saying the israeli government must allow more crucial aid into gaza as it continues its barrage against hamas priorities. >> that certainly we have, which includes getting hostage deal done, getting aid in and then getting that six week cease fire . >> israeli officials denying reports of starvation in an interview with abc's tom soufi burridge, but say they're working to ensure the aid does

not end up in the hands of hamas people in gaza right now are starving to death, and you're not letting enough aid trucks reach those people in need. >> first of all, people are not starving to death in gaza. well, the un says they are. i beg to differ. at any rate, israel is enabling thousands of trucks to get into gaza. >> the us, conducting its first aid drop over the weekend, delivering 38,000 ready to eat meals. the pentagon saying there are plans for more deliveries. last week, more than 100 people killed in a scramble towards aid trucks in rafah. israeli officials saying soldiers fired shots toward the crowd but say most were crushed. a un team visiting a local hospital, saying a large number of the injured had gunshot wounds. unicef. likely to rapidly increase unless obstacles to humanity and relief are immediately resolved.

reena roy abc news, new york. former president donald trump is hailing a supreme court decision that lets him stay on a number of primary ballots, calling it a big win for america. >> the court's unanimous ruling comes before a super tuesday tomorrow, where 16 states hold elections. abc's perry russom is in washington today, a unanimous decision from the supreme court. >> former president trump stays on the ballot. >> it's a very important decision. we're very well crafted and i think it will go a long way toward bringing our country together. >> the case surrounds colorado supreme court's decision to disqualify trump from his primary ballot, citing section three of the 14th amendment. the section reads, no one who has taken an oath to support the constitution and then engaged in insurrection can hold public office afterward. in today's decision, the justices writing the constitution makes congress rather than the states responsible for enforcing section three. jason murray defended colorado decision in front of the supreme court, even though it made procedural determine that colorado, as a state, couldn't enforce section

san rafael bridge partially closed one of its two lanes for emergency pothole repairs today. there's some road damage so big that it's a hazard for drivers just west of the toll plaza. people headed that way are advised to use alternate routes and to expect delays. it's unknown how long the repairs will take and when they'll be able to reopen the lane. today been a number of problems because of all of this rain, but we're getting a nice little break now, which is welcome. all right. let's see how long that's going to last. spencer. >> it's going to last a few days. it's beginning right now.
