years in congress. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more from four of the candidates who raised the most funds and what experts say we can expect tomorrow. >> for the first time in 32 years, a long held congressional seat is opening up. it comes after longtime south bay congresswoman anna eshoo announced her retirement. a long list of candidates are vying for the seat. four have raised the most funds, according to opensecrets.org. as of the last report on february 14th, newcomer peter dixon raised more than $2.7 million, followed by former san jose mayor sam liccardo. state assemblyman evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. dixon is a tech entrepreneur and marine corps veteran. though he's raised the most money, he's never held office before, something he says gives him an edge. i'm an outsider who has a track record of getting things done, not just in business, not just in the federal government, but also on capitol hill. >> and so you really with voting for me and supporting me, you

really paradise for skiers and boarders. take a look at the snowfall totals. sugar bowl getting 126in of snow. that's 10.5ft. a lot of snow. soda springs 116. kingvale 106 89. at dodge ridge. palisades tahoe 93. and a little bit less than that sierra snow lab wind gusts close to 200 miles an hour. it was clocked at 190 above 8000ft, to be precise. at palisades tahoe, it was 8700ft late friday night, winter storm warning not in effect for the sierra, but it is up until 4 p.m. for the northern california mountains. as we take a look here, we do have some snow showers still coming in and some showers statewide. snowpack has gone up above average at 104% statewide. northern and central sierra, also above southern sierra, 94% of average. i am tracking the next system, but this one is heading towards southern california. i'll let you know when you will see some wet weather and who will actually see it, because this is

not going to be a widespread rain event. ama all right, sounds good. >> we'll check back. thank you. sandhya, this weather made for a tough weekend for people in the sierra. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn talked to travelers about the challenges they face. she's in the newsroom with more. hi, suzanne. hi, emma. so the chp and caltrans for days warned drivers to delay travel because of whiteout conditions over the weekend. now, today, the backups and closures have been cleared, and now people are looking back at how wild that storm really was. heavy snow and high winds slammed the sierra this past weekend, creating chaos on the roads. the chp had to rescue some drivers on i-80 near donner summit because of whiteout conditions and on other highways around lake tahoe, more stranded motorists. i've never seen that many cars stuck on the side of the road, so we lend it a hand, pushed a few, helped to shovel after i-80 was shut down for days. today. some relief for drivers and residents. i'm in a truck with four wheel drive. former abc seven news reporter

astounding, where the crumbling two lane road narrows to just one lane as it caves in just north of the caldecott tunnel in the oakland hills. neighbors say they've been complaining for seven years, with the city putting up sandbags and tarps on the city's 3-1-1 site. numerous reports of the tunnel road collapse are documented as received last spring. residents say they've reached out to the mayor's office, the city council and the department of transportation to no avail. now now they're getting alarmed at the idea of being stranded in their homes as they watch the erosion worsen over the last week. this is the second round of tarps in this storm season, and they're already washing away . >> and we can see that there's continued erosion underneath the tarps. it's worse. it's getting worse. even the last week it's gotten much worse. they got to come out and fix this. it's not acceptable. we pay our taxes with only one lane open. >> they worry about fire, police, utility crews, deliveries and emergency vehicles getting through to their neighborhood as the crumbling of the road accelerates. it's the city of oakland response to abc seven

temperatures in the mid to upper 50s for everyone, san francisco to oakland, san jose. you're at 57 degrees from our sutro tower camera. all is quiet right now. low 50s from santa rosa to napa, 51 degrees in livermore and a beautiful view from santa cruz. camera post sunset view tomorrow . isolated showers on wednesday. we are talking about scattered showers across the region and thursday and friday. if you're waiting for some sunshine, you're going to get plenty of it and it's going to turn milder. so here's a look at what you can expect tonight. just a few pop up showers in the north bay. those showers will remain isolated in nature tomorrow morning. and then wednesday when that system gets a little bit closer as it heads down towards southern california and parts of central california, we'll have a better opportunity. so at noontime, you see some light to moderate scattered showers. that goes on at 4 p.m. and then the system quickly is out of here. so nothing like what we experienced over the last couple of days. rainfall totals will pretty much reflect it. everybody under a quarter of an inch except farther to the

cisco and oakland is getting a big boost from the white house. zoom student transportation services has been awarded more than $26 million in grants to pay for clean school busses. the grants are part of the biden administration's invest in america initiative. >> we are pacing towards a goal of having san francisco unified school district and oakland unified school district fully electrified by the end of 2026 and 27 school year. the grant will allow zoom to replace more than 100 diesel burning school

busses. >> invest in america initiative grants will provide enough funding nationally to pay for more than 2000 new zero emission busses. >> smoke rose along the peninsula today and portola valley. that's because stanford researchers utilized the wet environment to burn piles of debris for wildlife or wildfire management. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the story. letting it burn with the rainy season winding down, the fire season is coming up fast, and stanford university researchers say there's a clear way to prevent them. >> low intensity fires like these reduce wildfire risk by 60. >> fuel reduction wildfire management risk mitigation is a community level effort. we have to work together. if one person is doing something over here and one person is doing something over here, if it's not connected and a fire were to come through, that would be at risk. but if we all work together, that's when you're going to get the best risk mitigation. >> the team from stanford's jasper ridge biological preserve is doing their part with these

to live there rent free. >> new details on a car chase and shootout in santa rosa that left one man dead and four sheriff's deputies injured, started when a man began brandishing a gun just after midnight around stony point and todd road. neighbors reported it to 9-1-1 when sonoma county deputies arrived. they say the man had a rifle. the man took off and officers followed in pursuit for about two miles during the pursuit, the suspect fired at the deputies and they returned fire. >> ultimately, the suspect crashed and subsequently died at the scene, neighbors said they heard dozens of gunshots. >> the suspect eventually crashed through a fence, for deputies were injured. one is in critical condition with a head injury. another was shot in the leg and two suffered injuries to their hands. target in vallejo reopened one week after someone set fire to it. >> surveillance video from february 24th showed the suspect igniting a row filled with paper towels. the damage to the store and the merchandise is expected to exceed $4 million, was. the

seeing a few snow showers continuing to fall. they are requiring chains on 88 and four, but the blizzard is over. gusts close to 200 miles an hour. friday night. palisades tahoe at 80 700 foot elevation. going through the next couple of days, they're only expecting a couple more inches of snow. donner five inches blue canyon for on live doppler seven i am tracking some showers, mainly in the north bay around calistoga and saint helena. they will remain isolated through tonight across that region. another system is coming our way and that will keep the isolated showers going. not just tonight, but also tomorrow morning. now, as we head towards wednesday, we have a better opportunity for seeing some of that wet weather. so let's take a look at your high temperatures tomorrow. they're coming up not quite as cold 50 and 60. fast forward to wednesday. that system is going towards southern california. you will notice those showers across our region, very scattered in nature. and our next opportunity is really saturday. but that system looks like it's going to be a north bay event right now.
