the eve of super tuesday in california's primary election, candidates are making their final pitches to voters. but the big question is how many voters are listening? good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the big one. we're really keeping an eye on particularly is here in the bay area is the race for u.s. senate. there are four big names, all vying to win the seat, long held by the late senator from san francisco, dianne feinstein. >> abc seven news reporter josh haskell is on the campaign trail in southern california, with the final hours before votes are counted up. >> it's super tuesday eve and

congressman adam schiff here in burbank behind me, hopes that the polls are right that show him moving on to the runoff, that we make sure that that, uh, that one time, first baseman, uh, who is now playing in deep, deep, deep, far, far right field never gets anywhere near the us senate. >> are you ready to win this thing? >> schiff, going after his opponent in the primary. republican steve garvey, who, according to the most recent poll released friday by the la times and the berkeley institute of governmental studies, leads schiff by two points. the top two finishers, regardless of party, will move on to the runoff election in november. this was garvey last week reacting to an ad schiff has run attacking the former dodger star. another democrat in the race, katie porter, says it's an effort to boost the republican. i'm really not running against my opponents. >> i'm running for the people of california. uh, what they do is, is their business. uh, but if

mr. schiff wants me, um, he can have me, so to speak. >> he thinks he can appeal to people by going on fox and attacking me and, you know, sort of throwing red meat to the maga crowd. that's really not going to cut it in california. he is really out of step. i think with california values, we caught up with porter on saturday in irvine when she voted for herself alongside her son, a first time voter turnout so far has been low. >> we feel like it's a very close race. we've seen the polling go up and down. low turnout elections are tough to poll because we just have a lot of people who usually come out are staying home. >> another democrat in the race, oakland congresswoman barbara lee, campaigned in la sunday and was at san fernando high school monday. in a recent interview, she told us california voters should be concerned that for the first time in 30 years, the state may not have a female senator. >> representation matters. we need a woman of color in the united states senate from california because there's so many women who, um, can relate to the challenges of a woman, of

color, someone who's been, uh, below the poverty line, lived below the poverty line, been unsheltered, raised kids. >> a reminder to voters that in the senate race, you're asked to vote twice. you're voting for the open senate seat, a six year terms, and then the few weeks remainder of the late senator dianne feinstein's terms. josh haskell for abc news in several states tomorrow, the presidential nominees will also be on the ballot. >> and today, a unanimous supreme court decision ruling in favor of president trump. the justices rejecting colorado's attempts to remove the former president from the state gop ballots. the ruling also ended similar efforts in illinois and maine. >> you cannot take somebody out of a race. the voters can take the person out of the race very quickly, but a court shouldn't be doing that. and the supreme court saw that tomorrow trump will face off against nikki haley and primary contests in colorado and 14 other states.

seven news.com and on your abc seven news app. all right. >> happening now. it's starting to look more like the calm after the storm of the sierra. this is our live camera from lake tahoe tonight. and the area is finally clearing out after this weekend's major storm. let's show you another live look at the roads along i-80 tonight. this is near the donner pass area that was completely frozen and shut down 24 hours ago. i honestly don't see a lot of just passenger cars with chains. >> i saw many, many dozens of big rigs lined up along interstate 80 below the chain controls, i guess, waiting to go through. caltrans has done an amazing job of clearing this freeway. i thought it was going to be a lot worse. >> traffic on 80 finally reopened earlier this afternoon after more than 300 vehicles were stranded 300 some drivers had to be rescued. >> i've never seen that many cars stuck on the side of the road, so we lend it a hand, pushed a few, helped to shovel because of the intense snow

flurries. >> caltrans said it was down to just eight functioning snow blowers of its 30 in the area. >> we want to get to abc seven news meteorologist andy patel now to give us some perspective on just how notable the storm is, she has that and a look at election day weather. sandhya >> yeah, and ama, this is going to go down in the history books. i mean, one storm producing 10.5ft of snow. so believe it or not, as sugar bowl right now from zephyr cove, all is quiet. but when you look at these snow totals. sugar bowl 126in of snow. soda springs 116 106 at kingvale. no. winter storm warning for the tahoe area or the central sierra, but up in northern california, we do have that warning until 4 p.m. tomorrow. so they are seeing some snow showers in the mountains to our north, and we are seeing some isolated showers here. locally, the statewide snow pack got a big boost. it is now at 104% of average northern and central sierra above average. southern sierra 94. a few more inches of snow expected

in the sierra at least through wednesday night. right now on live doppler seven, you can see just a little smidge of some wet weather. it's just a light shower right around green bay and larkspur that isolated shower activity through tomorrow morning. an area of low pressure off the coast is heading in our direction. if you're going to the polls to vote tomorrow morning, watch out. there may be a couple of dance spots at 9 a.m, temperatures will be in the 50s. a warm air conditions for the afternoon. we're talking about upper 50s to mid 60s and then cooling off. but certainly will be cloudy. i'll be back to let you know exactly when we're going to be seeing more showers coming right up, dan okay, sandy, thanks a lot. >> you know, it's what we love doing every day here at abc seven. you're spotting the breakthroughs in our cities that help build a better bay area. and while we've heard plenty about the businesses leaving san francisco, especially downtown, not all is lost. tonight, two restaurants are expanding in the city, partly geared to the downtown area. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone talked with

owners who say they're optimistic. even now. >> if you're under the impression that businesses, including restaurants, can't make it in san francisco. so just keep looking at all the customers here at china live. their dinner crowd has been strong, and it's led to people asking about lunch. >> we had a lot of requests from our, you know, we've been in business a few years now, a lot of requests from people who are working downtown who may not be remote working and say, hey, you know, can i come for lunch? and so you know, we're not open because when are you going to open? so we've had a lot of those requests. china live founder george chen says they first tested out opening for lunch and are now making it a regular thing monday through friday for the foreseeable future, due to its success offering classic food dishes like the ones i tasted monday night. but what are expanding were opting artistic. and you know, with i come to san francisco, i think that's going to be a big thing. what i've

seen on lunches, you know, it's about half business people. >> emily winston is the founder of boychik bagels and has that same optimism about san francisco. >> i've had fans begging me since i opened four years ago because, you know, please come to san francisco. >> so i'm excited to do that. >> winston started boychik bagels in berkeley in 2021. the new york times wrote that her bagels were better than bagels in new york. she's expanded all across the bay and will soon open three stores in san francisco, including this location along market street and battery part of a financial district that is struggling to recover after the pandemic and then we can like, you know, really be part of the rebirth of downtown. >> and i'm, i'm very excited to be doing that. and what better to bribe someone to come back into the office than with a bagel? >> the salesperson there to the bagel stores also opening in

lower park heights and laurel heights, will be open for breakfast and lunch, both businesses excited about the potential in the city by the bay . j.r. stone abc seven news. the san francisco union square alliance is calling on local businesses to talk strategy. >> it's hosting a meeting this week to discuss what it will take to modernize powell street in union square. the multi-million dollar powell street promenade refresh is one of the revitalization efforts. it will replace the existing aluminum parklets with the new design. the idea is to make the promenade more inviting so retailers will return, filling empty storefronts. >> this is the gateway to san francisco. i can't think of a more important place to put resources to ensure that the downtown will recover, but opinions are divided as to whether money should be spent on improvements or on addressing vandalism and graffiti in the neighborhood. >> the meeting on wednesday is by invitation only. new at 11. the spring break boost at sfo, a

our ranchers and our homeowners are hurting uh- deeply devastated. >> look at this. in the texas panhandle, all the wildfires are already the largest in state history, with well over a million acres turned to ash. the acreage is five times the size of new york city and larger than any fire in california's history . governor newsom is now sending some of the state's national guard members to assist in the firefight. as we start to learn about the impacts, it may have on the rest of the u.s. this texas fire crews were slightly relieved by a day of cooler weather today. even so, flames have also jumped the border into oklahoma around the country. we will be feeling the devastating loss for the nation's livestock supply. many cows that have survived the fires are severely burned or injured, and now there's no grass to graze. >> they're going to get pneumonia. they're going to get sick. we've already had to put some down. >> these people have no

electricity. there's no water to pump for the livestock. >> it takes years to put a cow herd together before they're productive and producing like they should be. >> it's going to take maybe decades to get over this. >> decades around. 28% of the country's beef herds are raised in northern texas. >> well, tomorrow in santa clara , the future of the city's police leadership is on the ballot. residents will decide whether the next police chief should be elected or appointed. we're digging into the issue as part of our continuing coverage of your voice. your vote. abc seven news, south bay reporter lauren martinez is on the story. the city of santa clara is unique. >> officials say it's the only city in the state where residents still elect a police chief. if measure b passes, that could change the position to one appointed by city officials. you can't miss the billboard by the santa clara police officers association. they're urging voters to vote no on measure b, the santa clara residents right now have the power to control

the police department. >> they they are direct constituents to the chief of police. >> the santa clara police union believes an elected chief makes them more accountable and reachable to residents. what you have to say, what you want to see done is not filtered through a government. >> bureaucrats lens. it's not a game of telephone line like it is in a lot of other bay area cities. it's not screened by a police commission. >> on the other side, those who are yes, for measure b question the current system. >> three out of six of the last nine elections for chief of police. there's only one person on the ballot, a point of contention has to do with the required that the police chief must be a santa clara resident. >> well, if yes, on measure b wins, that could change to a nationwide search for a new police chief. >> now, we have 153 sworn officers, but only ten of them live in the city. so that's our pool to elect from. >> you don't really have a vote if you don't really have choices. if you only have one person on the ballot, that's not a choice or if that person was

incident, an ex user tweeted that the vehicle belonged to his friend, but he said it was driven by a hotel valet at the time of the crash. supposedly as a joke. the hotel was not amused and he was forced to recant, saying his friend crashed his own new cybertruck. >> new at 11 as we take a live look out at the tarmac of sfo, united airlines says gen zers are choosing international destinations more often for their upcoming spring break trips. >> according to the sf business times, this year's spring break is expected to bring out the most travelers ever young adults have their eyes on places like london and tokyo. >> yeah, the busiest travel day is expected to be march 22nd. anticipating about 500,000 passengers to take flight a more than 30% of gen zers are choosing to explore another country in the east bay. >> crucial road access could be lost for an entire neighborhood in the oakland hills, a portion of tunnel road is collapsing in slow motion into a landslide, and the street is crumbling

away, ready to cave in. something residents have been complaining to the city of oakland about for seven years. the city has just been putting up sandbags and tarps. >> this is the second round of tarps in this storm season, and they're already washing away. and we can see that there's continued erosion underneath the tarps. it's worse. it's getting worse. even the last week it's got much worse. >> residents tell us they are afraid of ending up stranded in their homes, not to mention the lack of access for emergency vehicles. the city of oakland says it plans to implement a permanent repair estimated at $850,000. >> right. blizzard conditions in the sierra did not stop one couple from a celebration months in the making. >> now, chloe bowman and chris nielsen from sacramento have been planning their wedding since last year. it was scheduled for this past weekend in truckee at old greenwood resort. >> but as the date crept closer, the forecast looked worse and worse.

going to make a beeline towards southern california. and as it does, it'll graze us. so we will get some showers right now on live doppler seven. pretty quiet view. we do have a few isolated showers up to our north, but this is far more up to the north around middletown down hidden valley lake. we'll continue to see isolated showers going into tomorrow and then turning more scattered by wednesday. so as we take you back in time, you see that wet weather that came through today? it wasn't just a north bay event. we had a little bit of drizzle elsewhere. and when you add all this up, since last week when the storm came in , take a look at those totals over 2.5in in ukiah. ben lomond nearing three inches. some of our coastal hills did pick up 3 to 5in, or 1.3 for santa rosa, san francisco. close to two three quarters in oakland, san jose 6000/700 of an inch. you're in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains and 8005 hundreds in concord. as we check out our sierra snow, there is going to be more snow coming a week from

today. we're talking 19in donner, 12in kirkwood, but this system that is going to just kind of scrape us is only going to bring a few inches to the sierra 40s and 50s on your temperatures, right now. a beautiful view from pier 39 tomorrow. spotty showers and patchy fog to start the day wednesday. scattered showers are in the forecast and thursday and friday we've got sunshine and warmer weather for you in case you're craving that. so 4 a.m. tomorrow. watch out. there will be some damp spots when you get going for the commute, but as we head into wednesday, you will notice some scattered showers moving in light to moderate and intensity. wednesday at 4 p.m. and really continuing through wednesday evening before this system pretty much winds down and continues its southward track. now, rainfall projections with those scattered showers through wednesday night, most of you will be under a quarter of an inch, but there will be isolated places like napa that may pick up a half an inch of rain. there is that system, and i wanted to show it to you just so you can see why we're not getting a lot of rain like we
