8:32 am
you make a caramel, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter. you boil that altogether. and then we're going to add baking powder. the baking powder -- baking soda rather, lightens it up. aerates it a little bit. when you stir it all in there, right? in a perfect world this would be liquid. let's pretend it is. it's not. so we go like that. >> pour it on top. >> mix it all together, throw it in the oven for about 30 minutes. >> 30 minutes. wow. >> it will help solidify the caramel. then because ice cream sundae needs peanuts, chocolate, little sea salt. >> oh wow. i love the mix of the flavors. >> what do you got? >> this is whipped cream with vanilla pudding. that's a constant. >> little pudding mixed in. >> not enough sugar in there. >> pop it with the cheese doodles and you have an ice cream sundae. >> bam. that's what we've got. kristen, this is your first season hosting the show. >> it is. [ laughter ] >> there you go. you're right. >> i say it with love. >> lemon zest, chili, panko bread crumb, cheese doodles. there you go. >> lemon zest nice addition. >> makes it fresh, bright. >> look at that. >> what you hope is a sizzling pan. >> your pan is not quite sizzling. >> leave that. it comes out brown and crispy and cheesey. i have got a salad with some parsley. >> can i just ask you a question? when you're doing the milanese, how long do you want it in the pan? >> pound it thin. the chicken will cook quickly. one minute on each side. >> two minutes on each side.
8:35 am
>> okay, two. you want the chicken to be cooked all the way through. >> yes. i have a radicchio salad with lemon juice. >> you added apples. >> i added apples and celery. i pile it on top. just to enforce that cheesiness a little bit of -- beautiful shaved parmesan on top. >> nicely done. >> wow. >> you nailed it. >> perfect to have cheese doodles. the new season, tom, was filmed in wisconsin. >> the cheese capital of the world. >> what kind of challenges are they going to face this year? >> there will be some cheese. there will be cheese. 8:36 am
>> for how long? >> anywhere between -- depending on the water content, anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours. >> really? >> you will see as this starts to roast, the liquid will come out. you pour it off. this will roast and get dried out. not dry where it's crispy, but dry. okay. and then we do a salsa verde. parsley, shallots, caper, garlic. this is also acid. if you do this in advance, don't add vinegar because it will turn it brown. okay. you want to add that at the last second. in this case we'll do it last second. the other thing we put the top on but take this guy off. turn it on. there we go. come on. >> there you go. >> trust me. everybody is like, come on, you can do it!

this book, quote, a world class who dunnit. we recommend clearing your schedule. once you start reading, you're not going to be able to stop. let's see what it is. it's "listen for the lies" by new york times best selling author amy tintera. i got to talk with her about this one of a kind thriller. take a look. when lucy chase is found wandering the streets covered in her best friend's blood, everyone in her small texas town believes she was behind her murder. only problem, lucy can't remember what happened that night. that's the back drop for auer this amy tintera's latest novel "listen for the lies" a thriller about a true crime podcaster who was determined to crack the unsolved case. >> lucy left her home town five years ago and has been living in l.a. since, sort of avoiding thinking about what happened. she can't remember what happened. that is a true crime podcaster
8:42 am
who decided he's going to solve it because he already solved one big case on his true crime podcast. so we are listening to the podcast as he puts it on. >> a huge part of this story line is that obsession with true crime. what made you want to tap into that? >> i listened to serial years ago with everyone else. i loved it. i listened to it on a road trip. i binged the whole thing. it seemed like a really interesting way to get background about a story. if you put that into a book, what an exciting way to hear about what happened. >> amy says the idea for the novel started during the trials of amanda knox, who was accused of killing her friend and then later exonerated. >> i was really struck at the time how no one seemed to believe her, that she and meredith were friends. the reaction was, no, you weren't, you're lying, you were jealous of her.
8:43 am
that made me realize that is often the portrayal we have seen of women's friendships in the media, jealous and catty. i have always had very close friendships with other women, so i thought that would be a really interesting idea to explore in fiction. >> it is a murder mystery, but there are moments of funny in it. why did you think it was important to weave that through the seriousness of the topic? >> i personally can't really write a book without being funny. i need to make jokes in serious situations. maybe it's my coping mechanism. writing a murder mystery felt natural to me. it is funny when you think about it. terrible situations but then we're listening to these very dramatic portrayals of them. i have got to make some jokes about it. >> amy, artfully walking that dark comedy tight rope as readers hunt for clues and listen for the lies. >> even though there are serious issues like domestic violence, i really wanted it to be a page turner.
8:44 am
lot of my writing process is about that. trying to make sure i keep you in your chair just flipping the pages. >> we do find out who did it. it's not who you expect it to be. i will tell you that. "listen for the lies" is available now. you can get it on our website and keep reading with us on gma book club. >> i'm hooked. >> i'll take one of those copies. >> i have a long flight today. i'm ready. >> thank you so much for that, eva. now ginger with a gma exclusive announcement. >> you can't wait for this one, michael. >> anybody with a toddler can't wait. right now we can reveal miss rachel the children's you tube singer, entertainer and educator is gearing up to release her first ever children's book. we've got a special message just for her. check it out. >> good morning america. i'm so excited to announce my first picture book. miss rachel and the special surprise.

everybody here is so everybody here is so happy because our friend and former colleague dan harris is with us. he has brought the practices of meditation and self-compassion to millions. now his book "10% happier" celebrating its tenth anniversary with a special edition which, by the way, is out this morning. congratulations. >> thanks for having me on. [ laughter ] >> you went -- i don't want to say this is the best thing that happened to you but it was transformative. >> your friend robin roberts said make your mess your message. and so for me having a panic
8:49 am
attack right here on this show, it felt like the world was ending. actually it turned out to be a huge gift. my wife and i were taking a trip right after the book came out and we landed in miami and were settling in at the beach. she turned to me and said, look how far you being an idiot got us. [ laughter ] >> very loving. she's off camera saying, i did say that. what would you say is the biggest thing you learned in this journey the past ten years? >> i think that we all -- i know we all have, and i'm sure this will sound familiar to everybody. we all have a voice in our head, a voice that chases us out of bed in the morning, that's yammering to us all day long. judging people, comparing ourselves to other people. this nonstop talk, if we broadcast alive, you'd be locked up. it is happening whether you are aware of it or not. what meditation can do is give you the self-awareness so that you can respond wisely instead of reacting bluntly.
8:50 am
instead of being yanked all over the place by these voices in your head. >> genius. >> i have been doing the math. 10% happy over ten years. are you 100% happier now? [ laughter ] >> i am happier. i do think though that, like a good investment, it compounds annually. these are skills. happiness is not a factory setting. a set of skills that you can develop. that is radically good news. so you can get way happier, way more than 10%. >> what can we expect for this, the anniversary of 10% happier? >> i rewrote the introduction because i wanted to talk about what i have seen change over the last ten years. at the end of the book i included guided meditation. if you want to get it for free i have a website dan harris.com where you can get some guided meditations and a quiz that will help you figure out, what's the meditation style for me? how long should i be doing this? and then i will, for better or worse, i will be the guy teaching you how to meditate.
8:51 am
>> thank you, because you taught now my husband and silenced his inner voices at night. he was a terrible sleeper and that has completely changed. that's what i want to share. i'm, as we know, very high energy. if i can meditate, i feel like anybody can meditate. [ laughter ] we're calm, we're soothing. dan, really, you've unlocked this gift in a way that's very approachable. i do feel like scary. the word meditation sounds far away. you make it very tangible. >> thank you. i appreciate that. i think the most important thing to say to people worried about it is, i think the primary worry people have is, i could never do this. my mind is too busy. the reason why people think this is because we've been sold the idea that meditation involves clearing your mind. that's impossible unless you're enlightened. or you have died. the whole goal of meditation is just to focus on one thing at a time, usually your breath.
8:52 am
every time you get distracted, start again. that seeing of the distraction, of how loud the mind is, is proof that you're doing it okay. the whole goal is not to reach some special state, it's to become familiar with the inner chaos so that it doesn't own you. that is a game changer. >> you talk about your panic attack. lot of people have anxiety. >> yeah. >> there's something you say we can do, pretty easy, just for some quick relief. >> one thing i will say, anxiety is at record level. we have never seen it like this. there are a bunch of causes for this that i can go into if we had more time. we are in an extremely anxious moment. one thing you can do, this is the type of thing your mom might have told you growing up. but it is backed by science. take a series of deep breaths. what you are doing is resetting the nervous system. it's a very powerful thing that can help you get off the anxiety train.
8:53 am
one other thing you can do is talk to yourself the way you would talk to a good friend. this has been researched and it feels a little forced and cheesey. but if you can talk to yourself the way you can talk to a good friend, you are less likely to feel anxious. >> so true. you had one other thing you said that i say all the time. ask your 80-year-old self when you don't want to work out. ask your 80-year-old self. your 80-year-old self would say, i wish i could go out and take a walk. i think your social media's great. we are so proud of you. >> thank you. i appreciate it.
