this is america this morning. >> good wednesday morning, everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the results from super tuesday. one of the most important days of the election year. >> the big headline this morning, a biden trump general election rematch is all but certain. that's because trump defeated nikki haley in nearly every state that held gop primaries in his victory speech overnight, trump did not even mention haley. president biden's camp responded, saying voters in november will have a clear choice to make between democracy and chaos. >> the only super tuesday state nikki haley won was vermont, but analysts say her overall performance is exposing some weakness that the trump campaign will need to address. here's abc's lionel moise. >> overnight results coming in from super tuesday. as millions of americans in 16 states from california to texas make their voices heard. former president trump celebrating his sweep in all but one gop race while

slamming president biden's handling of the economy and the border. >> all of the problems that you have today, i don't think you would have had any of them. you'd only have success. and that's what's ultimately going to unify this country and unify this party. we're going to have unity, and it's going to happen very quickly. >> president biden reacted to his success in the democratic primaries, saying voters are showing that they are ready to fight back against donald trump's extreme plan to take us backwards. the biden camp calling trump a threat to democracy. super tuesday may have been the final test for trump's republican challenger, nikki haley, who won only the state of vermont. haley's campaign touting the win, saying there remains a large block of republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about donald trump. that is not the unity our party needs for success. a concern for trump. haley's success among independents in the suburbs. is there any indication that those who voted for nikki haley could possibly change their decision and go for biden or trump in

november? >> well, nikki haley does really well with moderate voters, with independent voters, with suburban voters. those are points of vulnerability for former president trump, because the question is, where are nikki haley's supporters going to go? are they going to hold the line and vote for former president trump just because they want to vote for a republican? >> an average of exit poll data in six states found 79% of haley's voters responded no. when asked if trump would be fit for president if he's convicted of a crime, biden is facing his own backlash over his handling of the israel-hamas war, with democrats casting protest votes in support of a cease fire. >> there's definitely dissatisfaction on both sides of the aisle with the fact that we have a rematch, essentially, that we are marching toward in terms of the general election. >> tens of thousands of democrats voted uncommitted in minnesota, where there's a large muslim community. and in virginia, marianne williamson,

is a republican. schiff is a democrat known for his role in impeaching donald trump, voters in many states say border security is their top concern. >> a new data shows migrant crossings are on the rise yet again after dipping in january. sources say migrant encounters at the border rose by 12% last month to more than 140,000. numbers generally increase as the weather warms up. president biden could announce new executive action on the crisis during tomorrow night's state of the union address, as the push for a mideast ceasefire becomes more urgent by the day, the u.s. has conducted a second round of air drops to palestinian civilians. >> military cargo planes dropped more than 36,000 ready to eat meals over northern gaza. president biden says israel has made a rational ceasefire offer, but hamas says it will not accept a deal without the complete withdrawal of israeli troops, a demand that israel has rejected. >> now to your money, and a new plan to crack down on the high prices we're paying for food

services and even credit card fees. but this new plan unveiled by the white house is being met with a heavy amount of skepticism. abc's ike ejiochi explains. >> the american people are tired of being played for suckers. >> this morning, a controversial move by the white house to lower the credit card late fees that millions of americans pay each month. >> the new move will cap late fees at $8 per month. that's a quarter of the current average fee of $32. the president accuses banks of being greedy, but we estimate banks are generating five times more in late fees than it costs to collect late payments. >> they're patting their profit margins as americans currently hold a record level of credit card debt, an average of $6,000 per family. >> the new cap will save those who pay their bills after the due date. an average of about $220 per year. but opponents say this change will end up hurting most americans. the u.s. chamber of commerce, which says it will sue to stop the change, says

capping late fees punishes americans who pay their credit card bills on time by forcing them to pay. for those who don't. this will result in fewer card offerings and limit access to affordable credit. >> for many consumers, they say if they if they lose that revenue stream or it's greatly reduced from those late fees, they're going to be forced to raise credit card interest rates on everyone. >> biden, who's facing lagging poll numbers over his handling of the economy, wants to go further than just capping credit card late fees. he announced a new task force yesterday to crack down on what he calls unfair and illegal pricing on everything from groceries to prescription drugs, led by the ftc and justice department. the task force will work with other agencies to target businesses that break the law and keep prices high. critics say the biden administration is just deflecting attention from high inflation. the notion that government is in a better position to decide whether to pass on a price increase through quantity or through price just strikes me at the root of free

market capitalism. as for the new rule capping credit card fees, if it clears any legal hurdles, it will take effect in may. andrew. >> all right, ike. thank you. multiple investigations are underway into the deadly explosions at a smoke shop near detroit. officials say a fire set off hundreds of canisters of butane and nitrous oxide that were being illegally stored some exploding canisters flew as far as two miles away. a 19 year old was killed by a piece of shrapnel. officials say the owner of the facility is cooperating with the investigation. >> new video shows a small plane crashing after trying to reach an airport in nashville. the plane exploding on the side of interstate 40, killing the five canadians on board. three of them were children. the plane was flying from kentucky to nashville when the pilot said his engine shut down the wreckage will now be pieced back together so they can try to determine what happened. >> time now for your wednesday

>> i cannot wait to show you. i'm so excited! let's do this! >> we are back now with florida taking new action to prevent the chaos that marred last year's spring break in miami beach, governor ron desantis is deploying 140 state troopers to try and keep the peace at spring break hotspots throughout the state. most are heading to miami, where there were two deadly shootings and nearly 500 arrests last year. spring break seems to be more popular than ever. united airlines is expecting its busiest spring break travel rush ever. we turn now to what could be a game changer in college sports. >> a new push to unionize. it could be a real game changer for student athletes. the dartmouth college basketball team has voted to unionize, a big step towards forming the first labor union for college athletes. the dartmouth men's basketball players. >> voting to unionize is a

pretty massive deal in college sports. it it could set a precedent for other private universities for athletes there. >> the players voted 13 to 2 to join the service employees international union, which already represents some employees at dartmouth. the team saying it aims to create a less exploitative business model for college sports. but the school is fighting the effort. it's appealing to the national labor relations board trying to overturn a recent decision that said dartmouth players are employees and therefore can unionize the school, calling that decision as unprecedented as it is inaccurate. >> the more money that gets driven by major college football, major college basketball, men's and women's, the more it's, the more it's hard to just say these these athletes are just another student on campus and should be treated as such. >> the school is also warning players that unionizing could get them ejected from the ivy league, or possibly even the ncaa. this union debate could end up in federal court, which could delay potential negotiations until after current members of the team have graduated. >> well, it turns out iowa star

connecticut are going cell phone free, participating in a pilot program. the governor hopes will keep them from getting distracted in class. i'm showing my age, but i do find that social media is sometimes fundamentally anti-social, and i think too much smartphone makes you stupid. the kids have the option of leaving their phones at home or locking them in this pouch. students get to hold on to the pouch, but can't access their phones until they're unlocked at the end of the day. so far, the program is getting mixed reviews. >> it's important to them to have a cell phone in case of emergency. i'm not a fan of cell phones. in school. i didn't grow up with cell phones in school. we got them taken away. we had to keep them home. actually, i didn't even have one until senior year, so i would love for no cell phones. >> the governor is pushing state lawmakers to regulate cell phone use in schools. florida was the first to take a stand on the issue last year, banning student phone use during class and blocking access to social media on school district wi-fi. lawmakers in oklahoma, kansas and vermont have also introduced proposals for phone free schools
