that juror explaining to us what convinced him that hannah gutierrez was guilty in this ten-day trial. gutierrez, this morning, is in custody. the jury taking just 2 1/2 hours to convict her. >> will the defendant please stand? >> reporter: this morning hannah gutierrez, the armorer on the deadly set of "rust" waking up a convicted criminal. >> we find the defendant, hannah gutierrez, guilty of involuntary manslaughter. >> reporter: the jury of her peers taking just 2 1/2 hours to find her responsible for the dealt of halyna hutchins who was shot and killed when a live round from a gun, held by actor alec baldwin, fired during rehearsal. >> if you would have done what you were supposed to, it wouldn't have happened. she didn't check the weapon. she didn't check the rounds. >> reporter: in a split verdict, gutierrez found not guilty of tampering with evidence. the 26-year-old showing little emotion as she learned her fate in a new mexico courtroom. >> we hope that it brings some closure to the family. >> reporter: in a two week trial, prosecutors painting the defendant as a careless firearm

safety boss. unable to control chaotic set. a juror telling gma it was an effective argument. was this a difficult decision? >> not for me. i'm real big on safety. >> i'm the armorer. >> reporter: the defense tried to portray her as a scapegoat for the tragedy with ultimate responsibility falling on producers, including the film's star, baldwin. >> we have a lot of work to do and we will be doing on this appeal. >> reporter: now all eyes turn to baldwin's own involuntary manslaughter trial, which begins in july. he's pleaded not guilty. >> his team is going to illustrate the fact that the armorer did not perform her duties to the standard that she should have. he should have never been handed a weapon with a live round. >> reporter: in a written statement the hutchins family saying they are satisfied with the verdict and still hope everyone else responsible will, quote, face the legal consequences for their actions. gutierrez faces up to 18 months in prison, rebecca.

her sentencing date has not yet been set, rebecca. >> thank you. we turn now to breaking news overnight in the battle over ivf and alabama. the governor signed a new law making it possible for fertility clinics to reopen. it also leaves a critical question unanswered. elizabeth schulze is in montgomery, alabama, with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. lawmakers at the state house raced to pass this bill late last night with overwhelming bipartisan support. it was immediately signed into law by the state's republican governor. capped off a week long showdown over access to ivf fertility treatments that was deeply personal for families across the state and nation. >> 159 has passed. >> reporter: this morning, two weeks after a ruling by alabama's supreme court up ended families fertility treatment, a new law will restore ivf in the state. >> all of us care about families.

>> reporter: state lawmakers approved a bill that gives civil and criminal immunity to ivf clinics and patients. the governor quickly signing it into law, saying alabama supports growing families through ivf. doctors at one of the three clinics that paused treatments say they now have enough legal cover to resume ivf today. >> we have kept our lab fully operational so we would be positioned to resume care as soon as possible. >> reporter: but the law does not answer the central and divisive question in the state supreme court ruling classifying frozen embryos as people. >> this is a quick resuming the services but does not address the long term problem. >> reporter: families drove two hours to the capitol to watch as lawmakers debated their fertility care. now relieved they can move forward with an embryo transfer after an agonizing wait. >> definitely happy. i figured out everything was going on. i just cried because it hurts our heart.

>> it hurts your heart that this has happened in alabama? >> yeah. we just found out this is the only way we would be able to have a family one day if we wanted. >> reporter: the governor here called the law a short term fix to help those families proceed with treatments but acknowledged there is still work to do on the complex issues of ivf in the state. michael? >> still more work. thank you very much for that. we're going to turn to safety concerns on mass transit in two major cities. eight high school students were shot getting on a bus in philadelphia. in new york city, they are responding to a spike in crime on the subway system. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky has more. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. after a rash of violence in and around mass transit, passengers are on edge. the national guard deploying the subway here in new york. in philadelphia, they're trying to fend off safety fears at the bus stop. this morning police in

philadelphia are looking for who ever stepped out of this car and opened fire on a group of high school students boarding a public bus. >> multiple people shot. >> random people exited the vehicle and just shot multiple times. over 30 times they fired as the kids were getting onto the bus. >> reporter: overnight police releasing this video to the public seeking any information. it was the fourth shooting this week near a public bus in philadelphia. >> we will not be held hostage. we will use every legal tool in the tool box to ensure the public health and safety of the people of our city. >> reporter: in new york that means deploying the national guard into the subway to help police conduct bag checks after a series of violent attacks. >> riding the subway, which should be part of your everyday life, is filled with stress and trepidation. >> reporter: less than two hours after the announcement a subway conductor was hit by a glass bottle. a week ago a different conductor

had his throat slashed. >> it's worse than ever. getting worse the last couple years. since the ridership seems to be down from covid, you feel a little alone down there. >> reporter: a spike in crime in the subways at the start of the year has subsided, but, george, the governor says heinous attacks cannot be tolerated. george? >> thanks. breaking news overnight. the u.s. retaliates after three sailors were killed off the coast of yemen. chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz has the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. >> reporter: over night the u.s. taking out two drones over yemen that posed a threat to commercial ships in the region. this morning dramatic video of the after math of that deadly attack on a cargo ship in the gulf this week while the ship billowed smoke, the indian navy rescuing survivors and the wounded from the commercial vessel which was hit by a ballistic missile fired by the

iranian backed houthi militants in yemen. three crew members were killed. that is the first time that has happened. and three were also critically injured. the u.s. and britain have already conducted large scale attacks against houthi targets within 150 of them. the houthis keep on striking these ships. a huge problem in these very busy shipping lanes. in addition to these fatalities and injury, the houthis sunk a ship in the red sea carrying 21 tons of fertilizer. the u.s. continues to say they will hold the houthis account so far retaliation is not working, at least not working quickly. there have been almost daily attacks on vessels in the region. rebecca? >> very troubling. okay, martha. thank you. we turn to the investigation after flames burst from the engine of a united airlines flight forcing it to make an emergency landing. transportation correspondent gio benitez joins us with this story.

gio, these are some very scary images. >> reporter: yeah, rebecca. the passengers on board tell us they were absolutely terrified. now, the fire you see in that video is fuel burning off. this morning an investigation under way after flames come flying outs of an engine on a united airlines flight. >> got 167 souls on board. we had engine stall on the left engine. >> reporter: united flight 1118 was flying from houston to fort meyers, florida, monday when passengers say 15 minutes into the flight the plane started to shake. >> the cabin was dark but it suddenly illuminated with red, orange colors. the engine was on the fritz. >> reporter: in this video, you can see the flames shooting from that engine, under the wing of the boeing 737. david bringer also on board. >> panic set in. lot of people were screaming and crying. >> reporter: united saying in a statement the incident was due to an engine issue. the flight landed safely and the

>> when you think about the wnba draft. i'm going out on a limb to say you'll be the number one pick. i got a crystal ball. you're going to be the number one pick. you know indiana, the indiana fever, have the top selection. they are already talking about their ticket sales. they're already talking about the demand. what do you think it is about your game that has people, just can't wait to see you in the professional level? >> i think it's just the style of basketball that i play. but also, i think people love the fire and the emotion that i have. the smile i always have on my face. to be honest, i don't get nervous. i just know, like, this is fun for me. people love the long shot. people love the good passing. people love the fire. >> that fire blazing during last year's march madness tournament. there was a lot of talk about women athletes and being competitive and fierce and all that. i'm like, where you guys been? we've always been that way. >> i think it still surprises me people get distraught about women being competitive and getting into arguments on the court, or having a little trash talk.

that's how it should be. i think more than anything it's surprising that you didn't know this is how women's sports are played. like, come on. >> as a young girl, you could find caitlin gracing the court, the field and the track. you were a multisport athlete. what was it about basketball? >> honestly, growing up, i loved soccer. i played every sport. i ran track. i did softball. soccer. but i think basketball, i just loved the competitive side of it. i grew up playing with the boys. my dad was my first ever basketball coach. for every game i was with my dad. i'd give him a nod, he'd give me a nod. then i'd go out there and get ready for the tip. just speaks to the bond i have had, especially with my dad, over the course of my basketball upbringing. >> as a high schooler, clark clinching a spot on the team usa youth squad, winning three medals on the global stage. >> this is caitlin clark! >> but recounts a humbling setback that turned into a major come back. i remember when you were a rising junior. they didn't put you on the team.

>> yeah. >> that seemed to fire you up, just like it did jordan, when he didn't make the varsity team. >> i went to try out the next year. honestly, i hurt my pinkie during training camp but i kept playing like i was fine. i just played really bad. i didn't deserve to be on the team. honestly, that's one of the lowest points of my basketball career. you're on a team the previous year. you win a gold medal. then you go back to try out. it allowed me to find another fire. just pushed me to work harder and get better and prove people wrong. >> you know we had to step on the court, where the magic happens. okay. there's just something about the smell of a gym. and see that iconic record breaking spot, now forever etched onto the floor boards. okay. where is it? where it on the court? >> all the way over here. >> that? that's -- you shot from there? >> yeah. >> i'm going to show folks. okay. this is the three-point line. this is where she shot it from. you see that? you see the difference?

>> that's half court. >> closer to half court. not only do you have a place in the record books, you have a place on that court. that's got to mean something special. >> it's crazy. when i first went out there i was like, this has to be the wrong spot. it seemed way further back from where i shot it from. >> how will she go for history? [ cheers ] this is what i dreamed of. i dreamed of playing in front of these types of crowds, in these types of environments. every pregame, i just take a breath, soak in the environment. it seriously never gets old. >> it certainly doesn't. i had a great time in iowa. the coaching staff, lisa, the ad beth, they're all wonderful. next up for caitlin, march madness. big ten tournament followed by the big dance in a couple weeks. then on april 15th, the indiana fever will select caitlin as the number one pick in the wnba draft. get this, guys. okay.

she was in the second grade, second grade, and she said her teacher handed out these sheets with little bubbles. they were told to put in their goals and dreams. caitlin clark wrote in the second grade, dreaming of playing one day in the wnba. her mom still has that sheet with that goal. she knew back then that was a goal of hers. here she's gonna be the top selection. but she's got work to do. got march madness. yeah. she has that, that and a whole lot more. >> to write that in second grade. for robin looking through her crystal ball and know it? that's amazing. performances. ryan gosling expected to go all out singing "i'm just ken" from the barbie movie. that's gotta be great for the show. >> i hope it will be great. i think it will be great. it's quite a -- it's a big production. ryan takes this stuff very very seriously. it's funny 'cause i think ryan was lying for a couple months leading up when he said, i haven't been asked to sing. that's untrue. he had been asked repeatedly. >> you heard it here first. >> i think he had to think about it for awhile. he came in, looked around at the space. he looked at the theater. okay, yeah, i think i will do this. now he's in. >> it's live moments like this in a show that jimmy says makes hosting a fifth time worth considering. >> i'm not going to say i won't host the oscars again. i'm definitely not going to say i will. i don't know if i'll be asked. this could be a disaster and they go, okay, that's enough. >> only johnny carson, billy crystal and bob hope have hosted more. >> yeah.

>> did billy give you some special advice? >> he does. in fact, he texted me this morning, checking in on me, seeing how it's going. i sent him my monologue. wanted him to look at it, see what he thinks. >> aside from the monologue, what other secrets are in store for this year's show? will we see you dressed up as any of the characters? >> all of them. i will be dressed as all of them starting with emma stone's character in "poor things." and going all the way to oppenheimer. i'm going to try to lose at least 80 pounds over the course of the show. >> that will be fun to watch. it is a family affair, guys. jimmy's wife will be at it again, back at co-executive producer for the second time. jimmy said he's really happy with how the show feels. we hear there may be a really funny moment with one of the stars of oppenheimer, jimmy's frenemy, matt damon. let's all make jimmy happy and remember it's the day after daylight savings and this year's oscars is starting an hour earlier, 7:00 p.m. eastern, 4 p.m. pacific.

i'm told the president is going to reflect on his record, tout those accomplishments and also hit on some of the issues that pose the biggest challenges to his campaign like the economy and immigration. it is still unclear whether he will go after donald trump directly by name. but what is clear is that the president is going to highlight and lay out their very different visions for the future of this country. meanwhile, donald trump now the presumptive republican nominee. also gearing up for a fight. he's already challenging the president to debate any time any where any place. the bottom line here, george, and guys. this is the biggest audience that the president is likely to have this year, his best chance to try and change perception ahead of the general election, as that fight kicks off. michael, the pressure's on. >> as you said, big speech tonight, mary. thank you very much. we're going to turn to breaking news overnight in the battle over ivf in alabama. the governor signed a new law, making it possible for fertility clinics to reopen. let's go back to elizabeth schulze in montgomery, alabama.

>> reporter: hey, good morning again, michael. this new law means families can move for war with ivf after they were forced to pause treatments for two weakness the wake of the controversial decision by alabama's supreme court. lawmakers at the state house raced to pass legislation late last night. it was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support. and alabama's republican governor quickly signed the bill into law, saying alabama supports growing families through ivf. the law gives civil and criminal immunity to doctors who perform ivf, shielding them from lawsuits when they discard embryos, which is a typical part of the process. but it does not answer the central an divisive question in the state supreme court ruling classifying frozen embryos as people. so that means there could still be a broader legal fight ahead here over ivf in the statebut for now doctors at one of the clinics that paused treatments say they are relieved to move forward with their jobs. they have embryo transfers already scheduled for today. rebecca?

flooding in atlanta. heavy rain yesterday in atlanta. that was a roar rainfall for you. when i show you these flooded streets, they were up to the car doors in a lot of locations. we had the storm move through the northeast. it's out of the way. that storm's gone. there's another storm swinging through the deep south in atlanta, into montgomery, birmingham. want you to think about more flooding here. this is an awful lot of rain. there's a bulls eye from athens to atlanta over the next five days. this could be 4 to 5 inches of rain on top of the flooding you saw there. that's the weather around the nation. ♪ early in the morning start of a new day new hopes new dreams new ways ♪ ♪ i open up my heart and i'm gonna do my part and make this a positively beautiful day ♪ ♪ la la la la la it's a beautiful day good morning america ♪

this town has been fabulous to me. i gotta tell you, of all time, maybe it's not the bar we're creating. hopefully it's love we're creating. let's get a place where everybody's welcome. everybody's good. we had an alley next door, too which nothing good went in. we had an opportunity to bring the police down here. broadway has grown so fast the police don't have a substation. now they got one next door. we love our men and women in blue in this community. they're like celebrities here. everybody takes pictures with them. now they have a place here. with a bar. it's fun. we're part of this neon neighborhood. i'm welcoming anybody to nashville. you don't have to come to friends in low places but just come to nashville. nothing but a big party. >> it's a big old party in here. huge! >> how involved were you with the construction? >> good thing is, stay out of the way. surround yourself with people that know what they're doing so we get to be with ben and max, the brothers that do bars here. jenny an camille run all this. then, of course, the queen. the queen comes in, puts her stamp on everything. everybody says, yes, ma'am. >> yes, miss trisha. she's got her place. she's got the restaurant. she's going to have her food here. >> we are lucky to have her here. lucky to have her food. when we started they were talking about bringing in chefs. i'm like, i have got the girl right here for that. through this friends in low places is home cooking, which is something she does best, as you know. we are very very lucky to have her. so i get to be mr. yearwood at home and mr. yearwood here. >> tell people the experience they're going to feel when they come in here. >> hopefully when you walk in the door you go, oh, this is cool. as you're here, hopefully the people that serve this place, people that are in this place, hopefully you feel love, you feel welcome.

good morning, morgan. >> good morning, george. okay. hear me out. larger bin space, device holder, power outlets. southwest airlines were pumped to show off their newly redesigned cabins. customers weren't happy. they quickly locked in on the leg room or what they said looked to be a lack there of. this morning many are telling southwest to take a seat. southwest is on boarding a brand new book. the budget airline unveiling its redesigned cabin, complete with power outlets and electronic device trays. i didn't quite take off with some travellers on social media. many quick to clap back on the more than 18,000 tik tok comments. one describing the cushions as ozempic seats. another saying why not put wooden benches in? they'd be just as comfy. >> upon first impression i sort of felt like they were a trim, more slim down version of what we currently know when we fly

southwest. >> reporter: other comments questioning whether there are more rows and less leg room. this morning southwest revealing to abc news new 3-d photos of the actual seats showing a bit more padding saying the original images were 2-d rendering to show the cosmetic look of the seat and were not scaleable for showing comfort. we have our customers' back even when they give us slack. southwest isn't the only airline getting a facelift. british air also revealing new seats in may. all of this comes in time for the spring break travel blitz and as the aviation industry looks to rebound from a series of challenges including questions over safety following the missing bolts investigation at boeing to airlines raising their baggage fees. experts say the post covid climb is still real with many companies winging it just to see what sticks. >> each airline is sort of investigating where they can

differentiate themselves, whether it's free wi-fi or updated cabins or ways they can still retain and grow their customer loyalty. >> reporter: southwest says the seats still have the same width and leg room as the current ones. the new upgrades though will be featured on all their new planes come early 2025. i don't know. the 3-d models helped with the cushions, you know? the power outlets.
