united airlines plane taking off from sfo. we'll show you from the air. the plane took off from runway 28. right. or 28 are yesterday. and as it gained altitude, the tire fell off over the employee parking lot, hitting several cars before bouncing into the neighbor's lot. no one was hurtntal car miraculously, but the tires can weigh up to 265 pounds. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is here with a look at the damage and reaction from witnesses. ryan. >> amanda. good morning. you can see just that moment the wheel fell off the plane. terrifying scenes just as it was lifting off the runway and the damage it left to the cars nearby. this was a boeing 777 jet taking off around 1130, heading for osaka. one passenger says he could tell something was wrong before their map was showing that the plane was now turning around. people on board tell us that something they had never seen before. >> everything was normal. uh- on time, departure uh- everything was. the flight was was good,

like takeoff and everything like we didn't realize it till we're about a half hour in and the captain came over and said, there was an issue during takeoff. they're checking with the ground to kind of find out more about what the situation was. so then about ten minutes after that, he let us know that we lost a wheel, lost a wheel on takeoff. >> definitely not something you see every day. the plane was rerouted to lax where it landed safely back at sfo, the tire that fell off smashed some cars after it took off, took out a fence between the employee parking lot and the hertz rental car lot, united airlines said in a statement. we will work with customers, as well as the owners of the damaged vehicles and sfo to ensure their needs are addressed. now, how did that tire fall off the plane? well, that is under investigation from the faa. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you. more on this now as we watch crews roll off with the wheel of the plane, we wondered how uncommon this site

is. we talked to abc news aviation analyst john nance. and he says these types of things are rare. he explained the situation. our 3 p.m. program getting answers about six tires on each side on the main struts of this triple seven boeing 777. >> and there are times when mechanically something in the interface of the tire and the strut uh- interact, and it either overheated or something was wrong and broke off. but again, it's a very unusual situation. >> nance says the loss of a single tire will not have any impact on the ability to land the plane. they're able to drop fuel to lighten the aircraft's balance. but, nance adds, pilots will focus even harder in a situation in a situation like this, to create a soft of a landing as possible. we brought you live breaking news updates as the story was developing yesterday. you can stay on top of the news where you live with the abc seven news bay area app and be sure to turn on the notifications. >> president biden has made his case for a second time, framing the race as a fight for

democracy. last night, he spoke with a crowded chamber at the us capitol to deliver his state of the union address. the president started by addressing the war in ukraine with the message aimed directly at russian president vladimir putin. >> my message to president putin, who i've known for a long time, is simple we will not walk away. they >> president biden's speech went on to address abortion and reproductive rights, the economy, student loan debt and taxes. but when the topic turned to immigration and border security, the chamber got feisty in november. my team began serious negotiations with a bipartisan group of senators. >> the result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of border security reforms we've ever seen. oh, you don't think so? oh, you don't like that bill, that conservatives got together and said it was a good

bill. i'll be. darn. that's amazing. >> that bipartisan. the president went off script when talking about lake and riley the two weeks ago, the 22 year old georgia nursing student was allegedly murdered by a venezuelan migrant who officials say was illegally in the u.s. >> lincoln. lincoln riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. that's right. but how many of the thousands of people being killed by illegals to her parents, i say my heart goes out to you. having lost children myself, i understand, but look. >> throughout the evening, president biden brought up donald trump, but rarely by name. he often referred to him as, quote, my predecessor, former president trump, apparently was watching the state of the union address. he was busy posting his responses live on his truth social platform. not surprising, just about all of them critical of president biden.

>> alabama senator katie britt delivered the republican response to president biden's state of the union. britt was critical of the president's leadership and hit on some familiar issues, particularly the border and immigration. >> president biden inherited the most secure border of all time. but minutes after taking office, he suspended all deportations. he halted construction of the border wall, and he announced a plan to give amnesty to millions . we know that president biden didn't just crte this border crisis. he invited it with 94 executive actions in his first 100 days. president biden's border policies are a disgrace. this crisis is despicable, and the truth is, it is almost entirely preventable.

berkeley with a mission to protect cal students on campus. parents and community members hired their own private security group called safe bears. it consists of six safety ambassadors who wear bright yellow jackets and walk around or bike from 6:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day. some students we spoke with say they appreciate the added safety that would make me feel better as a student, just like having something there, because as of now, like we don't even have anything. >> so that would be like a great like step forward. >> safe bears will not be on campus, instead on public roads and sidewalks around the university where students live and study. the safety ambassadors have undergone criminal background checks and will not carry defensive gear like batons or handcuffs. the pilot program will run until the end of the month. >> two more blows to downtown san francisco. the north face, which got its start in the city's north beach neighborhood in 1964, is closing its store in

carly planes. that tire fell bounce. it smashed into cars in a parking lot. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is here with a look at the damage and what united has to say about losing that tire mid-air. ryan. >> yeah, reggie. good morning. what? we just saw that scary moment when the tire fell off and this is the damage it caused. luckily no one was hurt. now this all happened just moments after the boeing 777 lifted off from one runway, 28 r 28, right around 1130 yesterday morning. one passenger says he knew something was wrong because their map showed the plane turning around on the ground. a witness saw the tire fall and says it hit the ground and then bounced again, spinning at a rapid speed spinning. >> and it bounced in the staff parking lot and it bounced onto a car at a small white compact car. and i thought that it was just going to crush that car and stay there, but it actually bounced again, really high tire still spinning, and then it landed on a red tesla and
