in rodeo that we've been tracking this morning. it has cleared this was over on westbound 80 before willow avenue. this was a solo car crash. and although all lanes are back open, it's still a little bit slow in that area. so hopefully it'll move back to normal pretty soon. here and we're getting a live look outside at our san mateo-hayward bridge camera. and right now traffic is flowing nicely here. a little bit lighter on this friday. amanda. all right. >> thanks, gloria. this morning the faa is investigating another scary incident during a flight, a tire fell off the landing gear of a united airlines plane taking off from sfo. we'll show you from the air the plane took off from runway two eight. right, or 28 hour yesterday. and as it gained altitude, the tire fell off over the employee parking lot, hitting several cars before bouncing into the neighboring hertz rental car lot. no one was hurt, but the tires can weigh up to 265 pounds. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is here with a look at the damage and reaction from witnesses. ryan.

>> yeah, amanda. good morning. you can see the moment that wheel fell off the plane just as it was lifting off the runway and the damage it left to those cars nearby. this was a boeing 777 jet taking off around 1130, heading for osaka. now, one passenger says he could see. he could tell something was wrong because their map showed the plane turning around the people on board, telling us that this was something they had not seen before. >> everything was normal. uh- on time, departure uh- everything was. the flight was was good, like takeoff and everything like we didn't realize it. so we're about a half hour in and the captain came over and said, there was an issue during takeoff there, checking with the ground to kind of find out more about what the situation was. so then about ten minutes after that, he let us know that we lost a wheel, lost a wheel on takeoff. >> i can't imagine getting a message like that from your captain. definitely not something you see every day. the plane was rerouted to lax where it landed safely. now, back at

sfo, the tire that fell off smashed some cars after it took off. took out a fence at the employee parking lot in between the hertz rental car lot. united airlines saying in a statement. we will work with customers as well as the owners of the damaged vehicles in sfo to ensure their needs are addressed. now, how did that tire fall off the plane that is under investigation from the faa ? ryan curry, abc seven news. >> guys, ryan, thank you. as we watch crews roll off with the wheel of the plane, we wondered how common this site actually is. abc news aviation analyst john nance says incidents like this are rare. thank goodness. he explained the situation in our 3:00 pm program getting answers, six tires on each side on the main struts of this triple seven boeing 777, and there are times when mechanically something in the interface of the tire and the strut uh- interact and it either overheated or something was wrong and broke off. >> but, again, it's a very unusual situation, nance says.

taxes. but when the topic turned to immigration and border security, the chamber got feisty. lincoln in november, my team began serious negotiations with a bipartisan group of senators. >> the result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of border security reforms we've ever seen. well, you don't think so? oh, you don't like that, bill, that conservatives got together and said it was a good bill. i'll be. darn. that's amazing. >> the president went off script when talking about lake and riley two weeks ago. the 22 year old georgia nursing student was allegedly murdered by a venezuelan migrant who officials say was illegally in the u.s. while discussing it, the president called her killer an illegal rather than undocumented . add. >> lincoln lincoln riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. that's

right. but how many of the thousands of people being killed by illegals to her parents, i say my heart goes out to you. having lost children myself, i understand. >> many democrats criticizing the president for using the word illegal though. speaker emerita nancy pelosi defended it throughout the evening. president biden brought up donald trump, but rarely by name. he often referred to him as, quote, my predecessor, former president trump, apparently was watching the state of the union address. he was busy posting his responses live on his truth social platform to be expected. just about all of them critical of president biden. >> alabama senator katie britt delivered the republican response to president biden's state of the union. britt was critical of the president's leadership and hit on some familiar issues like the border and immigration. >> president biden inherited the most secure border of all time. but minutes after taking office,

he suspended all deportations. he halted construction of the border wall and he announced a plan to give amnesty to millions. we know that president biden didn't just create this border crisis. he invited it with 94 executive actions in his first 100 days. president biden's border policies are a disgrace. this crisis is despicable, and the truth is, it is almost entirely preventable. >> britt is the youngest woman in the senate. it's also the third consecutive year republicans chose a woman to respond to the president's state of the union address. there was a little bit of history last night because for the first time, the state of the union was live streamed on instagram. it was through president biden's potus account, which has around 19 million followers. we do have

county sheriff's office says the lost skier used their limited phone reception to contact authorities. authorities say the rescue took under an hour because of its reliable aerial resources. drew that is a pretty incredible. >> let's go outside exploratorium camera. we've got a light chop on the bay waters this morning, but nothing but clear skies out there from this vantage point for the morning commute. no issues. a little chilly out there. that sun gets up here at 631, about 20 minutes, and you can see that sun warming us up nicely by noon. we're already into the low 60s, so today, even warmer than yesterday. get out, enjoy the beautiful weather mid to upper 60s for our daytime. high 65 in oakland, 62 in the city, 68 in san jose, about 65. that high in napa tomorrow though showers back in the forecast a level one for saturday morning. the best chance of those showers in the north bay. but sunday i think more of us have a better chance of seeing that rain. we'll go hour by hour in future weather. show you the entire weekend.

confirming america's latest effort to deliver humanitarian aid to gaza. that mission comes as hope fades for a cease fire during ramadan. gloria is at the live desk with how it will work. gloria. >> good morning. amanda. president biden says the u.s. military will construct a temporary shipping port off the gaza coast, opening a corridor between cyprus and gaza city. the so-called trident pier, similar to the one seen right here, will allow the u.n. to deliver food, water, medicine and temporary shelter to

palestinians trapped in the war torn area. recent attempts to deliver aid have been hindered by road closures and fighting. the operation will not require american troops on the ground. >> israel must do its part. israel must allow more aid into gaza to ensure humanitarian workers aren't caught in the crossfire. humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority. >> protesters tried to block biden's motorcade ahead of his address. they're calling for it as his administration to stop military funding for israel. the muslim holy month starts in two days and negotiations are once again stalled. the u.s. says it hopes to help negotiate a six week ceasefire deal during ramadan. amanda. >> thanks, gloria. and in the east bay, a new group is going around berkeley with the mission to protect cal students on

campus. parents and community members hired their own private security group called safe bears. it consists of six safety ambassadors who wear bright yellow jackets and walk around or bike from 6:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day. some students we spoke with say they appreciate the added safety that would make me feel better as a student, just like having something there, because as of now, like we don't even have anything. >> so that would be like a great like step forward. >> safe bears will not be on campus, instead on public roads and sidewalks around the university where students live and study the safety ambassadors have undergone criminal background checks and will not carry defensive gear like batons or handcuffs. the pilot program will run until the end of the month. >> more hits now to downtown san francisco. the north face, which actually got its start in san francisco's north beach neighborhood in 1964, is closing its store in union square later this month, and the chronicle reports that zara is closing its union square store on post street, although it will keep its downtown location at the

mall. the announcements come just a week after macy's confirmed the closing of its flagship store in union square. since the start of 2023, more than three dozen downtown san francisco retailers have either closed or announced plans to close. a new study out of ucsf finds covid vaccines are safe for pregnant women and babies. researchers say the landmark study contradicts mrna information about brain development and conditions like autism and children. 34% of pregnant moms were vaccinated in the first trimester, about 45% in the second trimester, and nearly 21% in the third trimester. researchers tracked them during their pregnancies and for 18 months after giving birth, and they found in utero exposure to the vaccine caused no abnormal delays. >> now to an all female flight crew taking off on a first of its kind trip out of newark, this is a story that we love, but it's also perfect for women's history month. the united flight left from newark airport yesterday headed to sarasota, florida for the all

female crew included pilots, flight attendants and gate agents. according to the faa, fewer than 10% of all licensed pilots are women. that stat is something this all female crew hopes to change. who run the world? >> totally. who run the 757? my gosh. >> it's fun when they have, like, families, like a mother daughter pilot team, father son. i love that stuff. >> i met the longest serving delta flight attendant. >> oh, wow. so is she or he number one on the seniority? >> yeah. >> so that's why she does a south africa trip from atlanta to south africa. and then she can be off for, you know, like the rest of the month. >> oh, nice. >> because it's such a long flight. but like i was talking to one of the younger flight attendants and she said, we happen to have the longest delta flight attendant ever. that's

we're still dropping numbers down to 36 in danville, 37 in santa rosa. this is about the lowest we'll go this morning. that sun is going to be up here in about ten minutes. and then we start to warm up the day looking at the forecast. it's a nice looking day planner. we have nothing but sunshine, a warmer afternoon compared to yesterday. even this evening. any friday night plans? you're good to go. we have clear skies today. we'll have temperatures very comfortable into the 60s everywhere, if not close to 70. in some of our warmest cities. tonight though, after midnight, clouds will roll back in here ahead of our showers coming this way this weekend. a level one both saturday and sunday. now, saturday in the morning. the best chance in the north bay outside of the north bay. tomorrow i think we stay dry. we'll get a bit of sunshine to finish out the day. then on sunday we see a better chance of finding widespread showers. as we head into the afternoon and into the evening. this front is going to cross through here. rainfall totals not super high by any means. we'll likely see less than a half of an inch for most of us in the north bay. a

with a look at the damage and what united has to say. ryan? >> yeah, reggie. good morning. we just saw that scary moment when that tire fell off the plane. and this is the damage it caused on the ground again. luckily no one was hurt. really remarkable. this all happened just moments after the boeing 777 lifted off the ground runway 28 r 28, right at around 1130 yesterday morning. one passenger says he knew something was wrong because their map on board showed the plane turning around on the ground. a witness saw the tire fall and says it hit the ground, bounced and then bounced again, spinning at a rapid speed, spinning, and it bounced in the staff parking lot and it bounced onto a car at a small white compact car. >> and i thought that it was just going to crush that car and stay there, but it actually bounced again on really high tires still spinning, and then it landed on a red tesla and completely totaled and crushed the red tesla. >> when they made the announcement, it was, kind of like, did we just hear that?

like we're missing a wheel, so just kind of looking around and just trying to more anxious to find out more information what was going to happen. and then obviously, when you are missing a wheel, just landing diverted to lax where it landed safely, thank goodness. >> but passengers say they were anxious, rightfully so. united airlines said in a statement. we will work with customers as well, with the owners of the damaged vehicles in sfo to ensure their needs are addressed. aviation experts say these planes are designed to be able to land with damaged or missing tires. ryan curry, abc seven news guys. >> thanks, ryan. despite some pretty scary recent high profile incidents, the numbers still show that flying is by far the safest form of transportation plane crashes are extremely rare. mit research shows about 40% of airline passengers have experienced fear at one time or another while flying. however, you are about 265 times more likely to be involved in a fatal

crash driving to the airport than one in mid-flight, the research shows. a person is far more likely to die from poisoning, die on the job, or even die by electrocution. >> so good luck out there. >> that's the end of speaking about dying this morning. >> good luck out there, everyone . we spoke with east bay congress member mark desaulnier after the incident yesterday. he serves on an aviation subcommittee in the house and said this proves there is much more work to be done to keep passengers safe. >> there's pressure on the industry and they're cutting corners. in my view, whether it's maintenance, whether it's production, whether it's overworking the pilots and uh- air traffic controllers. so we're we're pushing back hard here in congress and myself on the committee saying this isn't acceptable. you're you're your risk to the flying public is not acceptable. >> the congressman says the committee is working on the faa reauthorization right now, and is making sure the agency will respond to some of these

republicans and the supreme court justices in attendance. >> my god, what freedom else would you take away? clearly those bragging about overturning roe v wade have no clue about the power of women. >> the president scolding republicans for not passing his bipartisan border security bill. >> this bill would save lives and bring order to the border. >> biden, also touting his record on the economy. >> 15 million new jobs in just three years. unemployment at year lows. wages keep going up. inflation keeps coming down. >> and announcing an emergency military mission to build a port in gaza, delivering food, water, medicine and shelter. >> the leadership of israel. i say this humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority. >> biden saying despite the many

issues the country faces, he remains optimistic. after the speech, republicans painting a different outlook. >> the country we know and love seems to be slipping away, and it feels like the next generation will have fewer opportunity and less freedoms than we did. >> biden did talk about his biggest vulnerability, his age, saying the issue facing our nation isn't how old we are, it's how old our ideas are. reggie, amanda, all right. >> and we talked with abc seven news insider phil matier after the speech. he called this one of the most political state of the union addresses he has ever heard. >> the content was appeared to be something that you would hear, possibly from a candidate at a convention kicking off the campaign. and that's what i think we saw tonight. he these are the issues he wants to run on immigration reform by his package that the republicans haven't passed women's rights, which is going to be on the ballot on key states, pharmacy, big pharma, reducing things for

the middle class, things for the working class and for what lies ahead for the president. >> after his address, phil says he may have delivered with this speech, but still has a lot of work to do. >> it is a tough road for incumbents right now, whether you're mayor of san francisco or president of the united states, it is a tough time. people do not feel good about what's going on around them and how they're being hit economically. and you can say that you've created jobs and done all of those things. he is yet to connect, and he has to connect with democrats first and then move from there. and this was the first step in that, yes, he was powerful. at least his lungs were. he stayed on script next week. something else could happen. a speech is a speech only as good as it goes on. >> we are less than eight months away from the general election in san francisco. >> mayor london breed says the city is on the upswing, touting her election day wins during her annual state of the city address yesterday, one of her wins is measure e, a proposition that she put on the ballot.

teachers were killed in a shooting at robb elementary. gloria is at the live desk with the reaction to the city council's report. >> gloria, good morning, amanda, retired detective jesse prado conducted the independent report. he detailed multiple failures by law enforcement at a city council meeting, but he said that officers did not violate policy and there's no evidence of serious acts of misconduct. he did say the acting chief of police should be exonerated. mariano pargas resigned weeks after the 2022 shooting. two council members said that they did not agree or accept his report, calling them insulting victims families cried as the city council read that report. >> how dare you? >> how dare you? you were paid by them. >> this child survived. this child was shot and he sat in there for 77 minutes. >> video shows when the officers

reef is suffering a mass bleaching event. the reef's marine park authority says it's because of soaring ocean temperatures caused by the global climate crisis. this is the seventh mass bleaching event to hit the site in eight years. bleaching happens when stressed coral ejects algae from within its tissue, depriving it of a food source. if the water temperature remains higher than normal for too long, coral can starve and die. >> stunning video shows the moment a husband and wife got really close to a whale shark. this is off the coast of new zealand. the couple the couple captured the underwater encounter during their recent trip. experts say the whale shark is considered the largest fish in the sea. they are huge and harmless, the couple says. they are keeping an eye out for manta rays, and that's when the whale shark made its appearance. wow. i would love to see it. >> yeah, that is cool. i like to see videos of it. i've seen it from a great distance. >> they have them at the georgia aquarium, so i've seen them there. oh wow. and that's
