but, of course, lots of other news this saturday morning. most of the country gearing up to spring forward into daylight saving time this weekend. >> gio: hear janai's voice, so excited about it. >> janai: so excited. the latest on the battle to make it a permanent move. >> gio: we begin with new plane problems across the country just as an expected record number of spring break travelers get ready to take off. this morning yet another investigation under way after a united jet skidded off the taxiway while landing in houston friday. >> united 24/77, i see you in the grass. rolling the trucks en route. >> reporter: 166 passengers and crew aboard this boeing 737 max 8 as it traveled from memphis to george bush international airport landing in the rain. but as it exited the taxiway, the plane rolling into the grass. passengers exiting on the tarmac then bused to the terminal. no one injured. in this dramatic video, you can see the plane's nose wheels suspended off the ground as passengers evacuated.

it's the latest in a slew of scary moments in the skies this week for the airline. another united flight facing troubles on friday in los angeles, originally flying from san francisco to mexico city, but forced to make an emergency landing at l.a.x. after hydraulic failure. the flight landing safely but towed off the runway. >> united, you might have lost a wheel on takeoff. >> reporter: on thursday this united plane losing a tire at takeoff crushing this car in an employee parking lot. no injuries there either. and on monday, a united plane's engine shooting out fire caused by bubble wrap inside. united saying, we take every safety event seriously and will investigate each of the incidents that occurred this week to understand what happened and learn from them. despite safety concerns among travelers, experts say incidents like these are still rare. >> we have about 100,000 commercial airline flights over the planet every day, and we have about 32,000 over the united states and for it to be

as safe as it is and very seldom have anything to report on, but it's really one of the more astounding achievements of mankind in the past 100 years. >> gio: and we want to remind you there is nothing to tie these incidents together, but these investigations are very important. >> janai: that was really great context. that it's so few incidents, it just seems like a lot when we hear them. good reporting, gio, thank you. now to daylight saving time. most of us spring forward this weekend but the battle over making it permanent appears to be going nowhere. phil lipof is here with more. bring on the sunshine, phil. >> reporter: i know. you are more excited than any morning anchor i have ever seen about this particular time of the day. this morning as americans get ready to spring our clocks forward, the battle over daylight savings time intensifies. 19 states have now passed legislation to abolish clock changes, but they can't take effect until congress approves a federal bill. in 2022 the u.s. senate unanimously approved a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent but the house never took it up and since then, it has been stalled.

so proponents of daylight savings time say it gives families an extra hour of sunshine, janai, in the evenings, potentially adding to their productivity and time spent outside. it also apparently makes smiles bigger. opponents, though, argue the lost hour of sleep hurts americans' health and brighter evenings means later bedtimes. until there's a change at the federal level, you will need to spring forward tonight at 2:00 a.m. or early tomorrow morning 2:00 a.m., turn your clocks to 3:00 a.m. losing an hour of sleep, gaining some extra light. the gaining extra light part, janai likes. the rest of us who work morning shows collective sigh, i hear, in the studio because we lose an hour of sleep, guys. >> gio: i know. >> janai: once you get past the sleep, you'll feel so good. >> gio: you are a ray of sunshine this morning. >> janai: i love that extra hour. >> gio: thank you, phil. appreciate it. the presidential candidates are off and running kicking the election into high gear now. president biden and donald trump heading to the battleground

>> gio: we are back with our "gma" cover story and this impacts high school students across the country. s.a.t. season starts this morning. the test has gone digital with administrators rolling out a new format and, jill madenberg, good morning to you. welcome to "gma." >> nice to be here, thanks. >> gio: likewise. what are the big differences? the digital test and the one that janai and i took with the pencil and the whole thing, what are the differences? >> so, the biggest and exciting takeaway is the test is significantly shorter. it's about an hour shorter than the original. the scores come back way faster. it used to be that students had to wait weeks and now it's only days. students can also use a calculator for any question that they want on the math sections. i think the thing that is causing some anxiety, though, is

that the test is what's called an adaptive test. >> gio: and tell me a little about how students should prepare for this because i got to be honest, i'm feeling a little envious that it's an hour shorter. >> yeah. so, okay, the thing is that with adaptive testing the exam is going to change in realtime. okay. so students, you know, if you're doing well, you're going to get harder questions. if you're not doing as well, you're going to get easier questions. so the first thing is you want to maximize your time, right, because it is a faster test. you want to be very familiar with the desmos graphing calculator because college board has baked into the exam a calculator that is very similar. so you want to be very familiar and you want to prepare, right, just like we did back in the day with the paper test. you want to be well prepared and

khan academy offers free skills and drills for any student that wants it for this digital platform and so they're really like keyed into it and can help you. what i think students want to do is be mentally prepared, right, like, because you want to go into the test with as much focus as possible. >> gio: well, and you mentioned that adaptive testing and i think that's going to be really concerning for a lot of people and certainly it's going to cause a lot of debate. what kind of advice -- what additional advice do you have for students who are worried about that adaptive part of it? >> so, i want you to stay focused and i want students to remember everybody is in the same boat, right? focus on the question that is right in front of you and do your best. students of this generation are very used to all things technology so try not to think ahead. as a former high school guidance counselor, i know one test does not define a student and it doesn't replace four years of high school. so go into the test mentally prepared. and as a mother, what i used to say to my own children is, like,

testing is a part of life. we might not like it but it's a part of life. it's another day on the job. be prepared. do your best. you got this and you can feel good about your results. >> gio: well, jill, i can see why you're a college counselor because you calm a lot of nerves. thank you so much for your advice this morning here on "gma." we appreciate it. >> my pleasure, thank you so much. >> gio: janai? >> janai: it's oscars eve and "gma" is live in hollywood. whit has been a part of all of the action ahead of his red carpet duties tomorrow and got a behind-the-scenes look at the walk the nominees will take before some of them become winners. whit? >> whit: yes, guys, this was fun. for actors, artists, creatives and writers the road to the oscars can lead to one of the biggest moments of their careers and once they arrive here, a new journey begins. so let's take you behind the scenes and show you the anatomy of the red carpet. ♪ this is where it all begins, the

historic intersection of highland and hollywood boulevard. the stars in their limousines will line up, come down highland and that's where they'll get dropped off right in front of the red carpet. it's 900 feet long, 33 feet wide. let's take a walk. ♪ as you can see, the red carpet still under construction here the finishing touches but starting to come alive. this is the area known as step and repeat because this is where the stars, the nominees will go. they'll get their picture taken and they will smile in front of the hundreds of journalists from all over the world. they'll step, they'll repeat. they'll do it again as they continue their way down the red carpet. protective plastic in place just to keep everything clean before the big show. and you'll be seeing a lot of these on the red carpet. these are the set dressing oscar statues. they stand about 7 1/2 feet tall, 65 pounds. they will go up and down the red

carpet. as you can see still being put down and you know we're on hollywood boulevard because you can see the stars, michelle pfeiffer, matt damon just to name a few. this is the iconic staircase that leads into the dolby theater. the whole walk from one end of the carpet to here took me 2 1/2 minutes. obviously it was unobstructed. no photographers, no camera, no interviews but this is the final area where the stars will gather before they go inside savoring this moment on hollywood's biggest night. and, guys, i don't know if you remember from last year, there was a big change to the red carpet. they did away with the red carpet instead did red drapes and they had a champagne colored carpet. this year they went back to the classic red with the cream colored drapes. part of the reason why, the maintenance last year was just a nightmare. we saw the guys with the steam cleaners running out every two seconds trying to keep it clean. this year back to the classic and it looks great. don't you think? >> gio: it really does. i like the classic look. whit, it brings out your eyes. >> janai: it does and that bow

georgia, all have the threat for isolated tornadoes this afternoon. you can see here this area in yellow is where the threat is elevated. damaging winds, as well, but we could see strong storms as far north as raleigh. the northern tier is where the heavy rain is coming down this afternoon. it's going to be a bit of a washout for saturday night plans from d.c. all the way up to boston and then overnight on the northern tier of the system, we have snow. some of the higher elevations could see 12 to 18 inches of snow. keep in mind if you live in allentown, philly, new york or portland, maine, we are in for a flood watch. that's a look at the forecast across the country. >> janai: all right, it is time

good morning, i'm stephanie sierra. at least 14 people were injured in a collision yesterday involving an ac transit bus in east oakland. sky seven was overhead just after 5 p.m. when it happened at the intersection of 54th and international boulevard. fire crews say three vehicles were involved. a spokesperson for ac transit says 12 of those injured were on the bus, including the driver. they were all transferred to local hospitals. to weather now and the return of rain. good morning lisa. >> good morning stephanie. we're watching a few showers approach the north bay here, cloudy skies and then the system fizzles out so a few isolated showers will be with us for the next couple of hours. north of the golden gate, 52 in hayward. you can see the clouds here. pier 39. highs % 60s. mostly cloudy. >> thank you lisa

"killers of the flower moon" on apple tv+, it's so good. obviously scorsese knows what he's doing and add in leonardo dicaprio and robert de niro but the standout for me is lily gladstone, she is this is an unknown -- essentially unknown story about the murders of the osage tribe and it's so well done and if you can hang in there -- >> whit: it's a bit long. >> it's a lbit long. if you can hang in there, there's going to be a nice end to the film. >> gio: some amazing performances there and marching on to something else for people

"rustin," colman domingo is a standout and this is a story, of course, about the man who was the architect of the march on washington for martin luther king jr. phenomenal film. very well done. again more history being made with colman's nomination would be great to see him get up there. this is a phenomenal film you can watch on netflix. >> whit: his career, he's been in the business 30 year, but now he's taking on these new lead roles, one project after another coming up. >> after another, i love seeing him grab those roles because he's so good. >> whit: he's incredible. you got something for us who want to swim that extra mile. >> i mean, yeah, you got to look at jodie foster in "nyad." what is so great about this is she gets another oscar nomination nearly five decades after her first one in "why not." she's an in skred incredible actor. this is such a great story about a woman who decides to swim to cuba in her 50s -- 60s? >> whit: 60s. >> 60s? >> whit: yep. >> and, of course, jodie foster is the person to bring that to life so you got to watch her in this.
