shows us that union square is forever. >> flower frenzy in san francisco. thousands of people packed union square today for the annual tulip day giveaway. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm karina nova. people waited in line for hours for a chance to pick colorful flowers to take home. as abc seven news reporter cornell bernard tells us, city officials hope the tulip day celebration will help the struggling shopping district blossom again. >> the beauty is jaw dropping a

rainbow of 80,000 tulips stretching across union square free for the picking. was it worth the wait? >> yes. >> becky cortez came from l.a. and stood in line for five hours to celebrate tulip day and take home a maximum of eight stems, just to be one of the first people in line and to be able to pick up the flowers like the best quality flowers before the sun starts to get here. >> to get the photos, we want to keep this line going. >> thousands of people lined up and that line was epic, stretching around union square. >> really crazy to see all these flowers and see everyone come together, so i wanted to be a part of it. >> the event started in 2018, blooming from a relationship between san francisco and the netherlands, inspired by tulip festivals in amsterdam. but this year it's about more than just pretty flowers. >> this shows us that union square is forever. >> union square alliance ceo marissa rodriguez says the blooms offer some brightness over dark headlines of retail

departures in the square. macy's the north face and zara recently announcing plans to close. >> if you're sad when there's an announcement that a business that you love is leaving, think about the last time you came down. think about the last time you supported them. events like this activate this space. >> they draw people into union square, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins believes the square is now safe for visitors, with police officers providing high visibility won. that union square is a place that is now safe. that we are investing law enforcement resources in, so that when people come here, they're not worried about their safety. >> it's definitely sad to hear the news of the city and the financial situation that it's in. but coming here and seeing the flowers, i think definitely makes people feel better for a little bit. lifelong city residents know union square's comeback will take time, but for now, the flowers are blooming. >> you know, with all things they will change eventually, and i'd like to hope and think that good things will come out of it.

and, that's will continue to blossom and grow in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news happening right now. >> a fire is burning at a home in san jose. it's happening near north daniel way and interstate 880. this is video from the san jose fire department. our city cams also captured these pictures of smoke billowing from the home. the fire department says there are propane tanks inside that house. so far, no injuries have been reported. new developments. now a suspect is in custody after a nine hour long standoff in contra costa county. the sheriff's office says it began after they found a man shot near lancaster circle in bay point, around 1:30 a.m. deputies were alerted to a potential suspect in that case inside a nearby apartment. residents were warned to stay in while officers negotiated a surrender. the suspect was finally taken into custody and the lockdown lifted just after 1030. a man remains in critical condition after being hit by a car this morning in san jose. officers responded to a major

vehicle and pedestrian crash around 6 a.m. it happened near south seventh street and phelan avenue, and the pedestrian was taken to the hospital. police say the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. no charges have been filed and a head ■on crash involving an ac transit bus in east oakland yesterday. at least 14 people were hurt, two of them critically. it happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of 54th and international boulevard. fire officials say a speeding car crashed into the bus after it collided with another car. police are still investigating. a woman charged this week with assaulting another woman in san francisco's bayview neighborhood is now linked to a deadly attack in the same neighborhood last year. that's according to our media partners, the san francisco standard. prosecutors say thea hopkins attacked a 71 year old asian woman this week unprovoked last year. hopkins was detained and interviewed in the death of 63 year-old yanfang

wu. police ended up ruling wu's death an accident. now, sources tell the standard. following this latest arrest, sfpd has reopened that case. turning now to the weather and taking a live look outside. it's been pretty uneventful today with just some clouds in the sky, but we do have a wave of rain on deck. abc seven weather anchor spencer christian is here with more in spencer today was a pretty good day. it was nice and calm. >> it was. i like your description, uneventful is what the day has been for the most part. karina. although there were a few light showers early today up in the north bay. right now we're looking at live doppler seven and again, quiet and uneventful. but you can see on the satellite radar image that clouds are streaming in our direction. and there is some rain on the way that next round that karina referred to. so let's take a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale tomorrow, late tomorrow into the afternoon and evening, we expect some rain. uh- highest totals will be in the north bay, and it will be accompanied by gusty southerly wind from time

to time. here's the forecast animation starting at noon tomorrow. at that point there'll be some light sprinkles up in the north bay. it will be later in the day into the early evening, when that first wave of steadier, heavier rain arrives, sweeping from the north bay, then southward and eastward into the late night hours tomorrow, winding down shortly after midnight tomorrow night and certainly before the morning commute begins on monday. but another wave of rain is poised to come in on monday. late monday into tuesday. rainfall totals from this first wave tomorrow will be generally under a quarter of an inch, except in the north bay, where it will be a little bit wetter. and i'll have a look at the seven days ahead, which include a warm up a little bit later. karina. >> sounds good. spencer thank you. we are now less than 24 hours away from hollywood's biggest night, the 96th academy awards ceremony begins at 4:00 tomorrow, right here on abc. seven nominees with bay area ties are already in los angeles ahead of the big show, including one filmmaker who could take home a gold statue for best documentary short. abc seven news reporter luz pena joins us

celebrating it with, you know, people from our team and but also with my fellow filmmakers, i'm from the other teams. we get to go to all these cool events and, you know, i'm speaking to my, you know, my cinematic heroes. right there's like martin scorsese, you know, there's like alexander payne, you know, and these amazing actors that that i've watched, you know, for the last couple of decades, they're just there. and they're lovely and they're having conversations with me. >> leo chang is one of three bay area directors nominated in the documentary short category. >> it's been really incredible that there are two other bay area filmmakers in my category. one of them is actually a really old friend that i've known for 15 years. >> he's documentary island in between is his most personal work yet, focusing on the taiwanese islands of kinmen, just two miles off the coast of china. >> my film is a personal exploration of the taiwan strait situation. through my family's history, and also my

transnational background as somebody who has both taiwanese and american passport. >> he also caught up with another bay area oscar nominee, christine turner, at the women in film oscar event on friday. she is one of 75 women nominated for an academy award this year. she directed the documentary the barber of little rock. >> i'm just excited to be celebrating with other women to all be meeting each other. i'll be in the same room. >> it's thrilling. this year, 32% of oscar nominees are women, a record here. the last time so many women were nominated was in 2021. music legend diane warren is one of them. congratulations. >> thank you very much. this is your 15th nomination. indeed it is. how weird is that? >> what does this nomination mean to you this year? >> it means i well, i love i, i love the song, i really do and i and i love the movie and the fact that i'm the only nomination from it. i feel really proud that i get to represent it. >> karina, we're having so much

fun on the red carpet and running into friends like michael gelman, the executive producer of kelly and mark live with kelly and mark. what are what should we expect tomorrow? >> well, we are going to have a huge show. you know, we take over the dolby stage where the oscars happen at midnight and then we start producing our show. we fill it with 2 or 3000 people, and then we do the show on the west coast here live at 6 a.m. that airs, you know, all over the country and the east coast at nine. so we're going to have a big show. we have sebastian maniscalco, we're going to be talking to jimmy kimmel the night before. we talk to these guests, right when they get off the stage with their oscars, we're on the red carpet and we're going to be with you, too. yes, you're going to be there, too. andy grammer is performing, so it's kind of this huge show, busy show in the backdrop of the oscars with all these huge names. so we're very excited. we're up all night doing it, and it's a it's a

san francisco are about to receive millions of dollars in federal funding. the money will come from the $460 billion government funding package signed today by president joe biden. $12 million are on the way to san francisco and on the screen there, you can see some of the organizations benefiting from that financial boost. we've posted a full list of projects receiving the funds on our website. abc seven news.com. warning signs are going up around oakland's lake merritt after algae caused the water to turn red. the city says the discoloration was reported on thursday. officials believe it was caused by an algal bloom. the bloom produces a toxin that sucks oxygen out of the water, suffocating marine life. people are asked to limit contact with the water until the problem clears. officials also say this bloom is not nearly as bad as others from past years. you might remember this, including 2002, when blooms killed

injured ankle. and one of the quick note on the injury side for the spurs. they're seven foot three rookie phenom victor wembanyama. he's out with an ankle injury as is stephen curry. an mri confirmed that steph did indeed sprained his ankle thursday night against chicago. we take you to the play late in the fourth quarter. now here's the good news. no structural damage on that ankle for steph. he's going to miss the next two games which includes tonight against the spurs. and coincidentally monday they're in san antonio playing the spurs again. he's going to be reevaluated on tuesday. and with the warriors following games wednesday in dallas. and then one week from tonight in la against the lakers. you see that right here on abc seven, head coach steve kerr told his pregame the team's focus has to be one game at a time. >> i'm kind of looking at it, while steph is out, we got to figure out what what do we have to do to win tonight, you know, and we'll worry about the next game then, but within that, we'll have a lot of decisions to make, you know who's going to play off the bench? it, it's hard to script it, because we
