>> uh-huh. >> reporter: a role he won a golden globe for in 2023. >> to quinta yeah. >> what drew me to gregory, it was built so specifically to me, and that speaks to quinta as a writer. she was like the person that i had in mind from gregory from the jump. so when i read it, it was as if the words were falling out of my mouth. >> reporter: the sitcom pauls in a huge audience and major guest stars. bradley cooper made an appearance in last night's episode, airing rite after the academy awards. >> oh, you work at the school district? >> yeah. >> you know these schools are criminally underfunded. >> yeah, yeah, i'm working on it. let's just take the picture. >> creator, writer, producer, actress, do you have a favorite hat? >> writer. i do love writing so, so much. when i'm not in the writer's

room, i miss it. >> reporter: but this season cut short after pumping the brakes during last year's writers strike. >> now people can see how bad it really is. >> with the shortened season, it forced me to want us to pack a punch with every episode. we had to get creative about explaining why we were gone for so long. >> reporter: now that it's back, williams says it's another chance for the cast's federalial bond to shine through. >> in a lot of ways, whenever you do a show for a very long time, it does become a lot like a family. i think chemistry in that way is not something that you can really fake on camera. it's either there or it's not. when i look at my career, it seems serendipitous to get to this point, to have started as a child working on a show, to now be on a show that actively involves children every day. i'm so grateful for experiences

that at the time were difficult. understand how to do things differently and better. >> reporter: the show's stars are also hoping to shine a light on what educators in public schools deal with on a daily basis. >> what really pulled me in was this idea that we could highlight not only educators, but the educational process and system in a way that wasn't antagonistic, that we could have people laughing along with the issues that we know are all there. and if that changes the conversation, even in the slightest in how people treat those educators, then i think we did something more than just entertain people. >> with "abbott elementary," from the very beginning, it went to the head of the class, and it has stayed there. what is the secret sauce? >> the secret sauce is comedy first. there have been many things added to what abbott has done. oh, abbott shines a light on teachers, which we do.

abbott shines a light on a diverse community, which we do. all of that to me is not as important as making a comedy first and foremost. my main goal is to make someone be able to sit down and share a laugh with us. and so as long as we keep doing that, i think we're doing a good job. so i think that's the secret sauce. >> reporter: the comedic series is aiming for a standout report card. >> the best thing about being on the show is that we can do comedy in an unashamed way. we show up every day with the simple goal of being as funny as we possibly can and getting as many jokes and laughs in here as we can. our job is to give somebody the release of laughter at the end of their day. that to me is one of the great achievements of this show. >> juju: our thanks to linsey.
