"the new york times" reports after that door panel blew off an alaska airlines flight in january, boeing has failed dozens of audits, with auditors finding nearly 100 instances of boeing allegedly violating manufacturing regulations. this morning new concerns about quality control at boeing. "the new york times" reports the company has failed 33 of the 89 audits the faa conducted after a

door panel blew off midflight on this alaska airlines plane in january. investigators later found four bolts were missing. >> following the incident the faa took immediate action to increase its oversight activity, and we will continue to put safety first. >> reporter: the faa also conducted 13 audits of boeing supplier spirit aerosystems. seven reportedly resulted in a failing grade. "the times" say documents show the faa saw them using a hotel key card to check a door seal an apply dawn soap to a door seal. boeing responding overnight saying, we continue to implement immediate changes and develop a comprehensive action plan to strengthen safety and quality with transparency at every turn. >> do you feel like they're making safe airplanes? >> right now with our oversight, we are certifying them as safe, yes. >> reporter: meanwhile a boeing whistleblower who raised concerns about production standards has been found dead after an apparent suicide. >> this is not a 737 problem, it's a boeing problem.

>> reporter: the body of 62-year-old john barnett, a long time boeing employee and quality manager, was found in charleston, south carolina, where he was being questioned in a case against boeing. barnett told the bbc in 2019 workers deliberately used faulty parts on the production line. boeing denied his claims. this past january, he told tmz he was not surprised when that door panel blew off the alaska airlines flight. >> what we're seeing with the door plug is what i have seen with the rest of the airplane, as far as jobs not being completed properly, inspection steps removed. >> reporter: in a statement, boeing said we are saddened by mr. barnett's passing and our thoughts are with his family and friends. this morning safety officials are eyeing the investigation into that video where 50 passengers were injured on a boeing 737 dream liner over

australia, many thrown into the ceiling, describing a sudden nose dive. brian jokat saying he asked the pilot what happened. he said, my instruments, i just lost them and then they came back instantly, within a split second. but enough to cause the plane to do whatever it did. >> reporter: the airline called the incident a strong shake and, for a time, blamed a technical event. >> the good news is the black boxes will quickly determine whether this was an aircraft malfunction or turbulence. >> reporter: and it's possible the ntsb could join this investigation into the latest incident if officials overseas request u.s. assistance. meanwhile, in late february, the faa gave boeing 90 days to develop a plan for quality control improvements. robin? >> all right, trevor. thank you. now the fatal school bus crash in illinois. three children and two adults were killed when the bus collided with a semitruck.

alex presha is on the scene for us. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it is a tight knit community here so school is cancelled today. instead they have grief counselors to help students and faculty deal with this devastating news. this morning an investigation ramping up into this tragic crash between a school bus and a semitruck that killed five in illinois, including three young children. >> route 24. semi has hit a school bus. one of the vehicles is on fire. >> reporter: 5-year-old maria mill, noah miller, along with both drivers all killed when police say the bus carrying the children crossed into on coming traffic, colliding with a semitruck about 60 miles west of springfield. >> the bus was traveling west on route 24 and for an unknown reason crossed over into the east bound lane in front of the semitruck. >> reporter: the truck carrying

sand flipped on its side, barely recognizable. the school bus, a burned out frame all that's left. >> small county, small community. it's a close knit family. when you have lost lives like this, it's devastating. quite a tragedy. >> reporter: the school the children attended canceling classes through tomorrow saying in a statement, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and our community. >> there's nothing easy about it and never will be. families are devastated. they were thinking the worst. they were worrying about the worst. >> reporter: the investigation here is ramping up. the ntsb is sending a team here to help get to the bottom of what caused this deadly crash. george? >> okay, alex. thanks. we're going to washington now where special counsel who investigated president biden's handling of classified documents after he left the obama white house is set to testify on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is the first time we will be hearing from the special counsel since the release of his explosive report last month. and just a few hours he will be

sitting right here defending his decision not to bring charges against the president over his handling of classified information. this report enraged the president furious over the depiction of the president as a sympathetic, well meaning elderly man with a poor memory. today he will say he had to assess his mental state in order to determine if he willfully retained classified material. we have just learned the justice department has now turned over the full transcript of biden's interview with the special counsel to the committee so they can see for themselves. i have also reviewed the transcript, all 250 pages of it. there are moments where his memory relapses especially when he talks about his son. he struggled to remember the year his son died though he does remember the day. overall, the image of the

report out this morning. elizabeth schulze show us why we are seeing more families dip into their savings for day to day costs. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. this report gives us a glimpse of the cost of everything from groceries to rent. to gas. it shows that overall inflation has improved but prices are still stubbornly high. you can really get a sense of that picture when you look at the price of a gallon of milk. the average price is $3.96. that is an improvement from $4.16 at this time last year. still higher than $3.88 two years ago. eggs will cost you 3 bucks today. better than more than $4 a year ago but not quite back to where we were two years ago. while on average american salaries are going up, these higher day to day costs help explain why more house holds are dipping into their savings. vanguard which overseas 5 million retirement accounts, says about 4% of its customers withdrew funds early from their 401k's last year.

good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. the royal family wanted this to die down. now just about every front page tells a different story. picture of chaos reads the mirror. daily mail, how the photo became a pr disaster. but the sun which is the country's most popular newspaper "lay off kate." that tells the general theme here. there's a lot of support for the princess of wales, but ultimately people are worried about how she is and the mystery of that photo continues. this morning mounting questions over the royal photo scandal, covering the front pages of international tabloids. this as princess kate was seen for the first time since it all erupted leaving windsor castle with prince william monday on her way to a private appointment. the prince also speaking at an event overnight but not acknowledging his wife or the image that was meant to calm concerns over her health, but instead only raised more questions after the princess admitted she edited it.

the palace initially sharing the photo, refusing to share the original version of the picture of kate with her children. now several major photo agencies have been forced to issue kill notices. one news agency highlighting the issues, including a missing part on princess charlotte's sleeve and skirt. how her hair abruptly ends on her right shoulder. and the change in kate's zipper. >> i don't think it was staged or digitally inserted. i don't think it's an ai generated photo. lot of amateur photographers touch up their photos. there's little things they didn't like. these are usually relatively benign things where you're just trying to make a better picture. trying to create, if you will, a perfect photo. >> reporter: the princess issuing a response saying, like many amateur photographers, i do occasionally experiment with editing. i wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. >> there is a potential long

term consequence here in terms of trust. can we now trust what the palace tells us? if they give us a picture of the family again. are we all going to be zooming in looking for the digital manipulations that kate has admitted she did? so there is a long term consequence of this, as well as the short term fury around kate and where she is. on that front, it's just added fuel to an already raging fire. >> reporter: the family is now trying to keep calm and carry on. queen camilla and prince william were seen together at the helm of the commonwealth day celebrations monday. >> 75th anniversary of the commonwealth is a moment to reflect -- >> reporter: king charles prerecording this video message marking the occasion as he step back from public events to undergo cancer treatment and kate recovers from that abdominal surgery. >> kate will be feeling embarrassed about what happened. the fact that a photo that was meant to squash all the rumors

you drive, your speed or any hard braking and then transmitting that data to an information clearinghouse. the new york times reports that data clearinghouse is working with insurance companies and their collaboration could drive your insurance rates higher. >> they are all connected. we would not be surprised that others might be having some plans. >> reporter: the data collection was uncovered by drivers using general motor's on star service which is traditionally used to make an emergency call. the owner of a chevy said he uncovered a 258 page report on his personal driving habits after he asked about a more than 20% increase in his insurance rate. his insurance company told him to check his lexis nexis file. turns out gm's on star service has a smart driver feature which tracks driver habits as way to improve safety. gm confirmed to the times that it shares select insights with

spirit, sharing the details of her terrifying accident. she's doing this for the first time, sharing, and how she dealt with the after math. our exclusive interview is coming up. >> you just created space for that vulnerability, robin. looking forward to the conversation. just ahead air bnb's big policy change on cameras. >> first top stories breaking at eight. we start with the breaking news just moments ago ahead of the upcoming testimony from the special counsel who investigate president biden's handling of classified documents after he left the obama white house. want to go back to mary bruce. good morning, mary. >> reporter: george, good morning. robert hurr is set to testify here. this will be the first time we are hearing from him since the release of his explosive report last month. he will be here before lawmakers in just a short while, defensing his decision not to bring charges against the president over his handling of classified material. but this report also enraged the president and the white house. they were furious over hurr's description of the president as a sympathetic, well meaning elderly man with a poor memory.

hurr is set to defense his characterization saying he had to assess the president's mental state in order to evaluate whether he willfully retained classified documents. he is also going to say he had to consider how a jury would perceive the president's mental state and memory. we have just learned the justice department has turned over the full transcript of the president's interview to the committees so they can now have a look for themselves. >> mary, did you get a chance to look at the transcript? >> reporter: i did. i have reviewed the full transcript, all 250 pages of it. there are moments where the president does have memory lapses especially, for instance, in his recall and description of his son's death. the president struggled to remember the year he died but does remember the exact date. it also contradicts president's adamant assertion that it was hurr that first brought up his son's death when it was the president who first introduces him into the testimony. overall, i have to tell you, the image you get of the president,

that you take away largely mirrors of that of his public persona. he staunchly defends his handling of classified documents. he has detailed reelection of events from years ago. he was very conversational. he does tend to ramble, as joe biden does. george? >> thank you very much. robin? now to the urgent search in nashville for a missing 22-year-old college student. riley strain. his parents spoke with us overnight. aaron katersky is here with the latest. good morning, aaron. >> good morning, robin. riley strain was visiting nashville with his fraternity brothers. he hasn't been seen in four days. this morning an urgent search in nashville for 22-year-old riley strain. >> he's just a great kid. we just miss him and want him back so bad. we miss him so much. >> reporter: nashville police say the university of missouri student was last seen on friday night at this bar owned by

country music star luke bryan. the family speaking overnight with abc news. >> he was excited because he was out. he was going to the different bars they were going to. he was having fun with his fraternity brothers. >> reporter: riley parted way with his friends around 10 p.m. and hasn't been seen or heard from since. >> riley is a very fun loving charismatic kid. he's never met a stranger. he loves people, loves to be around his friends. >> reporter: the senior's family travelling to nashville to join the search, desperate for answers. >> he doesn't go without talking to family. there's not a day that goes by, whether it's text, phone call. >> reporter: according to his family, riley's cell phone was tracked a mile from the bar but in the opposite direction of the hotel. authorities say they've been unable to successfully ping his cell phone since. police have a good description of this kid, 6' 5", blonde hair

blue eyes. he's a business student set to graduate two months from now. rebecca? >> so much ahead from him. just pray he turns up soon. okay, aaron. thank you. we turn to a major change for air bnb customers. the company is banning indoor surveillance cameras in properties listed on the site. elizabeth schulze is back with more on that. nice to see you again, elizabeth. >> hey, rebecca. air bnb said this is part of a push to protect its guest privacy. until now, hosts were allowed to put indoor security cameras on units in common areas like hallways and living rooms as long as they were disclosed on the listing page. as of april 30th, indoor cameras will be completely banned at all air bnb properties around the world. cameras outside, like on doorbells, will still be permitted if they're disclosed in advance. the company saying in a statement this policy simplifies their approach and makes clear that security cameras are not allowed inside listings, regardless of their location, purpose or prior disclosure.

we are back now on gma with our cover story. grammy award winning artist sza sharing what led her to reconsider her breast implants and get them removed. erielle reshef is here with the story. >> good morning. sza said she didn't know enough about the potential of getting breast implants, but with a family of history of cancer, she began to worry herself when she began to feel off.

she's known for hits like "kill bill." ♪ and "broken clock." ♪ now four time grammy awar winning musical artist sza opening up about her very personal decision to remove her breast implants. >> she was telling me things about my testosterone level and all these things that was plagued with but didn't know what was happening to me. >> the 34-year-old sharing her story on a podcast hosted by mary alex haney and an ob/gyn, whose patients include sza and other stars. sza said her mother had breast cancer and her doctor said the star had previously dealt with noncancerous lumps in her breast. >> you had a fibroid, which is a benign, you know, breast mass that a lot of young girls have.

>> while not linked with breast cancer, doctors say implants can come with some other potential risks. sza admitted she was supposed to consult her doctor before going under the knife. >> you know, i was supposed to see her before i had my breast surgery, but i didn't. i like snuck and got it anyways. >> sza said her implants did not last long. >> so basically, i put them in. they ended up hurting me. i got way too much scar tissue. i didn't feel good and it was painful. so i took them out. >> today, she's feeling good and heading back to the doctors soon. >> i just scheduled it. i just scheduled it. >> this is an important point. while most data indicates women with and without implants are diagnosed with breast cancer at similar rates. it is important to know those with implants require additional images. it is important to be transparent with your practitioner.

>> thanks for sharing that with us, rebecca. >> thank you, robin. we want to bring in our medical correspondent darien sutton to break this down. lots of women turn to breast implants for aesthetics. but some do it after breast cancer bgs for example. there are risks here. let's break those down. >> those risks are important to consider. i consulted with my friends in breast surgery. and reconstructive surgery. there's important risks they always discuss with every patient. number one persistent pain as in sza's case. that is a red flag, concerning symptom. also scarring. the rare risk of rupture or deflation. then the rare risk of certain types of cancer that are associated with more often than not older form of breast implants that are no longer used but still important to consider. >> how about the material of the breast implant itself silicone

versus saline? >> this is a common discussion. especially among patients making that decision. overall, when you look at the data, they are equally safe. both have a silicone shell so there's no way to avoid silicone. for those gel filled silicone implants, in the case of rupture that might be more difficult to repair and that might lead to one decision versus another. >> what we hear from sza is she said she felt pain. what should people who have breast implants be thinking about? >> i think what's most important to take away from here, even if you're in that position, it's not a call to remove breast implants. they are generally safe. regardless of what decision a woman has. but in terms of being aware, that's really important. number one, understanding any new symptoms. skin change, swelling, pain, those are symptoms you shou bring up with your doctor. also keeping your records. breast implants as well as any device implanted into the body has a device card that has the information on it. you might need that for future needs.

also, call ahead before your mammogram. make sure they have experience imaging breast implants. you might want to also consider mri or ultrasound. >> that medical device card is so important for anyone with a medical advice. dr. sutton, thank you very much. george? >> thanks. we have new research from zillow that suggests june may be a good time to sell your home. morgan norwood is back with those details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. good to be with you. we're talking about selling season in full bloom. turns out summer, specifically the month of june, may be when you can get the top price for your home. according to the latest research by zillow, they found homeowners who listed their home within the first couple of weakness june sold them for 2.3% more compared to other months of the year. the math checks out to 7,700 more on average. let's talk about winter. we saw prices drop by about 2%. all of this was last year. this june is expected to be prime. all of it hinges on mortgage

rates. 30 year fixed mortgage rates fluctuated from 6.35% to 6.79% last may. perhaps discouraging those would be buyers. but then, listen to this. just one month later the rates fell slightly and buyers were crawling back to the market again. which brings us to this summer. the fed already indicated they could cut key interest rates this june. if all of this pans out, we're talking about a really good situation for sellers. >> what should buyers know? >> you may be thinking prices jump up this may box me out of the market especially if you're looking to buy. i do want to shift your perspective a little bit. if all of this checks out, there will be more on the market. there will be more inventory at one particular time. remember, george, what we experienced recently was an inventory crisis, so come june, with more to choose from, and the potential for those interest rates to also drop, this could help you. >> these mortgage rates have been coming down. >> i want to talk about where we're standing right now. 6.13% for fixed 30-year

mortgage. that's down from the high we saw late october of almost 8%. this is a sign that the market is somewhat cooling which in turn could reel those buyers back into the market who were boxed out by the sky high interest rate, sky high affordability crisis, also the inventory crisis we've been seeing as well, george. >> thank you very much. robin? >> all very good information. thank you. we have more now on my conversation with christina applegate and jamie lynn sigler. the actresses sharing a common bond of life with multiple sclerosis. jamie lynn has been living with the disease for more than two decades, while christina was diagnosed most recently in 2021. are you still in the grieving process? >> mm-hmm. i'm not putting a time stamp on it. >> i don't think it ends. >> i'm never gonna wake up and go, this is awesome. i'm just gonna tell you that. it's not gonna happen. i wake up and i'm reminded of it every day. it's not gonna happen.

i might get to a place where i will function a little bit better. right now i'm isolated and how i'm dealing with it is by not going anywhere. i don't want to do it. it's hard. >> it was hard for her to be there for us. we really appreciated that she did that. she is completely honest about her anger, about her grief about having this disease. that kind of candor you don't hear that often. it's very powerful and important. takes a lot of courage. she and jamie lynn are supporting each other and others facing the disease. they are launching -- it is a great podcast. it is called messy. isn't that a great name? they capitalize the m and the s. they're taking it on in a way that is so refreshing. to see those two together, the full conversation we will have sharing their experiences. you will see it tomorrow. yeah, you'll get a little misty, but i guarantee you're gonna laugh as well, because that is how they are facing it.

the book will be called sonny boy. it will tell his life story from growing up in the south bronx in new york to becoming a household name thanks to roles in, you name it, the godfather, the irishmen just to name a few. the synopsis says it's the memoir of a man who quote, has nothing left to fear or hide. pacino won an oscar for "scent of a woman" in 1992. >> wow. >> exactly, robin. he's earned four golden globes, emmys, two tonys. as to whether he made a mistake presenting the best picture award, he has just released a statement saying, it was the choice of the producers not to list them as they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony. he chose to follow the way they wished for the award to be presented. he goes on to say, as an actor, he empathizes for those who feel they might have slighted by the oversight. that's why he felt necessary to make a statement about it. his memoir, sonny boy, will be out october 8th.

serengetti. what were you most looking forward to? >> the safari. when you are looking at these animals. when you see four lioness coming with those big claws and paws and their beauty, you're looking at their face. this is the migration. we're so lucky. >> migration. >> we're going across the road. the wildebeest are moving on. >> you are there at the hotel. your friend lori has gone to her room. end of the first day there. what happened next? >> well, the sun set. when the sun sets there, there are no street lights. it is pitch black. i was escorted to the lodge, my room. i wasn't given a tour. i should have been given a tour. i laid out my safari clothes. i saw the infinity pool out on my deck.

so i went out. i was just taking in the fact that i was back in the serengetti again. i'm walking. all of a sudden kaboom. i had fallen ten feet into a dry ravine. full of boulders and stones and sharp rocks, robin. i fell. >> off the balcony into that ravine. >> yes. there was a space that was not sectioned off and there was no sign that said caution ten feet drop. >> what kind of pain were you experiencing? >> well, of course i was in shock. my right hip took the impact.

my shoulder went up against the stone. a lightning bolt went through my mind's eye right here. in pitch black i didn't know i was falling. nothing would move. so i laid there. i said, move your body, baby. come on, jenny, move. and then i called for my friend lori. it was hard to even take a big breath to scream. >> and you're in the middle of the serengetti. there are animals. >> there are wild animals. when lori shined her flashlight down there, she didn't know there was a cape buffalo ten feet away. when lori ran to get help, i heard a lion roar.

my last thought, because i am jenifer lewis, was what a headline. [ laughter ] the king ate the queen! pieces of jenifer lewis' body is being flown back to the states. >> thankfully that did not happen. that is just a portion, a portion, of our conversation. she is so candid, so vulnerable. much of what happened in her recovery caught on camera. >> wow. >> she did keep this quiet for sometime. >> she did, george. i asked her why. she said, i didn't want y'all to know i had fallen until i could show you how i got back up. and she just feels there are lessons. she needed it for herself. people were like, where's aunt jenny?
