it's our top story tonight. the legislation that could put an end to tiktok as we know it just hours from now, the us house will vote on a ban of the widely used social media app. the potential effects could hit home here in the bay area. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> tiktok says about 170 million americans use the app, which ballooned in popularity during the pandemic. and now the debate over its future is in the hands

of congress. >> i have a lot of concern about the interference of authoritarian and totalitarian governments like china and like russia. >> it's kind of a source of entertainment. sometimes it's stuff that i'm learning about and then there's kind of a lot of like activism on tiktok, too, so i kind of just like keeps me informed. >> 90% of our sales are on tiktok shop, and we would basically i mean, we would lose all of our customers. >> so there's a lot at stake here. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is looking into this issue tonight and is here with how a ban really could change things here in the bay area. bay area jr. >> dan i'm a tonight small business owners here in the bay area tell me that banning tiktok would definitely have an impact on their bottom line. i know people are saying they could go to another platform, but the argument there is that each platform's algorithm is different, and tiktok reaches more new users or possible new customers versus other platforms . tiktok is now front and center

in washington, d.c. where lawmakers are threatening to ban the social media platform due to security concerns. would you be angry? >> yeah, i would be upset. yes >> small business owner and san jose resident april flores is firing back about the idea of a ban. she's starting a luxury portable restroom business with her husband called black tie vanities. they plan to market on tiktok. in fact, flores made a tiktok video about zeldin's bakery on wheels in 2021, and it went viral. >> they got more clients, people asking for them to come around so i think it's really important that it helps us connect on a different level than we would normally be able to didem's party and toy in san mateo came out of last halloween in the green, while other businesses were down 20. >> that after owner steve diddams daughter made a heartfelt tiktok video asking people to buy halloween costumes at the store, my daughter.

>> surprised me with a tiktok post that went viral, and it really made our made our halloween season. we hired some more people, we bought a bunch of new product. >> another viral tiktok video made by a daughter helped bring people back to lee's noodle house in santa rosa last year. that daughter, jennifer lee, tells us how long it takes people are still coming in. having a chinese parent company. lawmakers are concerned that china will be able to collect us data from the tiktok platform. they're also concerned that china could direct misinformation through the platform, all of which could be used in cyber attacks. didum says he's in the middle on this one, but that's because of his concern on the impacts that all platforms could have on teenage girls. flores says these lawmakers need to open their eyes on what a ban would mean. >> i really do think it's going to affect a lot of small businesses that are, you know,

winning georgia's democratic primary pushed him over the magic number of 1968 delegates needed to secure the presidential nomination. the democratic national convention will be in chicago this august. meanwhile former president trump also just clinched the gop nomination tonight, setting up a biden-trump rematch in november. if reelected, trump is now promising to free people convicted in connection with the january 6th attack on the capitol. he has repeatedly claimed they were wrongfully imprisoned. nearly 1400 people have been arrested in connection with the insurrection, and hundreds of them have pleaded guilty. nearly 500 have received prison sentences. >> all right, let's turn now to how it looks outside. here's a live look from our emeryville camera of the weather is starting to shift for the week. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it, and our 24 hour accuweather forecast. i say it's shifting. sandy that's towards spring. >> yeah, we're going to get an early taste an and it's certainly feeling like we're heading towards spring. take a look at this live picture from our sutro tower camera. it has

been shaking around. it's a little breezy outside as the system that brought us the rain is long gone. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow morning. patchy fog. temperatures in the 40s for most of you at noontime. sun and high clouds and it's going to be bright and sunny in the afternoon. certainly warmer, upper 50s to upper 60s. those numbers falling as the sun goes down. right now it is 23 mile an hour. winds on mount diablo. so a little breezy over the hills. stronger winds are coming. a wind advisory 5 p.m. tomorrow night until 11 a.m. friday. gusts 45 to 50 miles an hour. it's the north and east bay valleys and hills and the eastern santa clara hills. here's a quick sampling of how gusty it's going to get tomorrow . you're looking at 2535 mile an hour winds. even stronger going into your thursday. but that wind direction, that downsloping wind is going to bump those temperatures up average high for napa 67 tomorrow. still a degree shy after that. we're going to go into the 70s. i'll be back with a full look at the winds forecast and the weekend coming

up dan all right. >> thanks, sandy, very much. on the peninsula, residents are fed up with an emergency storm repair. murata way and half moon bay is right along the waterfront and is a key thoroughfare for residents and businesses alike. due to storm and coastal damage, it's been temporarily made a one way street, and as abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains, some folks are eager for answers about what's next. >> here's another portion of the road that is sinking a coastal road in half moon bay is eroding. >> the department of public works in san mateo county says storm damage and wave action has caused significant damage to murata road. on march 6th, county officials changed murata to a one way street for safety, just making it a one lane road is not a solution. sherry lewis is the manager at the historic miramar beach restaurant on murata. access to the restaurant is now her biggest concern, but people getting here, being able to get here without being confused, the county has not

provided a time frame for repairs. that's the main concern for paul mcgregor, who has built several homes in the neighborhood. >> we had a bridge put down at the end of the road on murata and it took four years, and at this point in time, four years is not going to be a good solution for this. >> mcgregor wants to see a temporary fix and the road reinstalled to two lanes. >> i would suggest that they would fill in those locations, be it, a cement slurry or some kind of base rock compacted to where, you know, at least it's it, it stops the erosion going in to where the sewer lines and the water lines are, because if it impacts the sewer lines and the water lines, we're going to have a major problem. >> in two weeks, the department of public works will be holding a neighborhood meeting about murata road supervisor ray mueller says the county will be figuring out how to stabilize the road. >> we would hope to see them doing work now. now it's just like they put a band-aid on it and they're they're gone now in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven

news. >> new at 11, $3 million in federal funding is coming to san mateo county in the wake of last year's mass shooting at two farm sites in half moon bay. the money will go to the half moon bay farm worker ownership project. the county says it will be used to add 20 housing units, as well as a rec space in the area. the deadly shooting of seven people last january brought the working conditions of these farm workers to the forefront. >> a california lawmaker is pushing a new bill to standardize active shooter drills in schools. assembly bill 1858 would provide guidance on drill tactics, including requiring schools to notify parents beforehand and making a school wide announcement prior to starting the drill. the bill would also prohibit the use of simulated gunfire to make it a potentially less disturbing event. it comes after several u.s. schools implemented active shooter drills, which some students describe as a traumatic experience. >> i texted my mom, i'm like, goodbye, just in case anything was to happen. it makes me more

supplier, and it reportedly failed seven of 13 audits. >> both alaska and southwest say they're considering cutting flights in anticipation of receiving fewer boeing planes this year. united now has a pilot hiring freeze as it searches for more planes. >> ikea is planning to cut its prices at stores in the united states in the coming months, because of inflation cooling off the popular furniture and home goods company has been slashing prices as the cost of transportation and materials drop. it has already reduced prices in canada, germany and sweden. back in 2022, ikea bumped up its prices as costs started to soar. >> the city of berkeley today took action in the effort to return land to indigenous people. the city council unanimously approved a plan to turn what is currently a parking lot over to the ohlone people. for thousands of years, the land was burial and ceremonial grounds. the current owner of the land will receive $27 million in exchange for that piece of property. the majority of the money will come from a

trust that works to return land to native peoples. new at 11, a bay area nonprofit serving vulnerable youth, celebrated its brand new space tonight, city leaders and community members gathered for a special ribbon cutting ceremony at san francisco casa. its new space is located on mission street and offers a spacious training room, youth lounge and several offices. court appointed special advocates, or casa, helps mentor traumatized or displaced youth and address their needs in the court and in the community. mayor london breed expressed her gratitude during tonight's event. >> we know things can be really hard for young people in this city, and i wanted to be here not only to celebrate this new space, but to thank the volunteers. >> sf casa currently serves 385 children a year. >> the happiest place on earth reached a major milestone in its expansion plan. the anaheim planning commission voted 5 to 1

in favor of disneyland, developing more sites throughout the city. >> this approval is a first step or a final step in the zoning phase, to then let them get to a place where they can really dream and start construction. >> the $2 billion project is known as disneyland forward. disney plans to build new hotels and resorts, restaurants and more park areas over the span of ten years. the project will also invest more than $100 million in city streets, public parks and affordable housing, creating thousands of jobs. what i continue to call a legacy project that will set the stage for an immensely bright future for both the resort and i focus on both the resort and the city of anaheim. >> the city council is expected to vote on the project next month. >> disney, the parent company of abc seven. >> controversial rapper kanye west held a listening party tonight at chase center. west is promoting a new album. he collaborated on with fellow rapper ty dolla sign called vultures one, and is holding

you a live picture right now from our emeryville camera and uh. you are looking at a beautiful view, looking back towards sutro tower, the bay bridge there, salesforce tower pretty nice view as visibility is doing just fine along half moon bay, though we do have visibility lowering to seven miles. high pressure is starting to take control of our weather. notice the wind flow is coming around that area of high pressure as that trough that brought us the rain moves on. the wind flow will right come right across the bay area. they'll pick up and that's why we're going to notice that it gets warmer around here, along with plenty of sun. so tomorrow it's a little bit warmer, but you really start to notice it on thursday. so here's a sampling of those temperatures. san francisco going from 53 to 63 by 4 p.m. in the upper 60s on thursday. i know tomorrow's wednesday. san jose is going to bump up to 70 degrees by 4:00, and the napa area 8 a.m, 51 going up to 68 degrees. so it is going to be noticeable. we did

have rain move through between last night and today, earlier in the day, and we had some snow showers in the sierra up to about five six inches there. here locally we picked up about a half an inch in ben lomond, almost that in kentfield, a third of an inch in san francisco. 1800s oakland and a few hundreds around concord, livermore and san jose. here's a look at the winds right now, gusting to 23 at sfo, 20 and half moon bay. as we go hour by hour notice at 5 a.m. tomorrow. it is gusty along the coastline. the winds will remain on the breezy side at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, and then they really ramp up. it's an offshore flow out of the north northeast. thursday morning, 36 miles an hour. calistoga, half moon bay. these gusty winds with us thursday afternoon. going into friday morning. now, the only good thing about this is these winds. these diablo winds are following all the rain we've had. so the moisture and the fuels is okay. but you always want to remain aware of fire danger. calistoga 40 mile an hour winds friday morning before those winds subside.

temperatures in the 40s and 50s. right now. live view from san jose. and here's a look at the headlines. overnight breezy, patchy fog. tomorrow through friday morning. gusty offshore winds and really thursday through early next week. we are looking at sunny and springlike warmth sticking around so as we go hour by hour tomorrow morning we start out in the 30s and 40s. there will be some patches of fog by noontime. you're only in the 50s, so it may feel a little cool, but at least the sun is out. and then by 3 p.m. we're going to go up into the 60s. so a little warmer than today, 30s and 40s. first thing in the morning, a few clouds and some patches of fog. tomorrow afternoon, you're looking at high temperatures that are primarily going to be in the 60s under sunny skies, 59 in half moon bay. and here's your accuweather seven day forecast. we're going to bring you sunshine for day after day after day through saint patrick's day. and even early next week. those temperatures will be in the warm category above average and very spring like mid 70s for the warmest spots. by friday it goes down slightly saturday, only to
