breezy weather later on this afternoon. a wind advisory kicks in later on this evening for some gusty winds overnight. tonight we'll show you those numbers coming up in about six minutes. kumasi. >> all right. thank you drew. now we are taking a look at traffic, looking at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. the camera there showing the metering lights are on and you can see traffic is backed up from the grand avenue over crossing this morning. >> the white house is attempting to increase access and training to life saving drugs to prevent overdoses. in an overnight announcement. it's commending bart for already taking similar action. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live from orinda with the white house's new push, gloria. >> yeah, the administration says bart is already stepping up. bart and some other transit systems are training their officers to administer naloxone so they can help people on trains and also in the stations in san francisco. so 64 people died from overdoses in february. that is slightly down from

january, but up from last year, according to the chronicle. and nationally, according to the cdc , more than 100,000 people died from an overdose in 2023. the administration says it has delivered nearly 10 million naloxone kits, preventing more than 600,000 overdose deaths. with funding from the department of health and human services and the administration says bart and other transit systems have already administered more than 2000 doses of naloxone. live in orinda. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news thank you, gloria three bay area regions are receiving millions of dollars in funding for infrastructure projects. >> the biden administration announced $3.3 billion in grant awards to help cities across the u.s. improve highways, add new transit routes, sidewalks and bridges. the alameda county transportation commission, the city of san rafael, and the san francisco county transportation authority are receiving grants for current infrastructure projects. >> this morning, the us house is

poised to pass a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban on tiktok. the bill would require the app's chinese parent company, bytedance, to cut ties with the app within six months, or risk getting blocked here in the us, fbi director christopher wray testified before congress this week. he said the app poses a threat to national security, and warned tiktok could be used to spy on americans and possibly influence the election. >> the ability to conduct influence operations that is extraordinarily difficult. you can't tell to detect, and that's what makes it such a pernicious risk. >> you also have to shut down the website associated with the app to prevent its functionality. but the bill remains narrowly focused on social media apps tied to four adversary countries. that's it. >> opponents of the bill say it violates the first amendment rights of millions of americans. the possible ban on tiktok could have an impact on small businesses here in the bay area.

>> business owners say they could go to another platform, but they say each platform's algorithm is different and tiktok reaches more new users or potential new customers compared with other apps. >> i think it's really important that it helps us connect on a different level than we would normally be able to. >> my daughter. surprised me with a tiktok post that went viral and it really made our made our halloween season. we hired some more people. we bought a bunch of new product. >> the bill is expected to pass the chamber with bipartisan support. however, it faces an uncertain future in the senate. >> tiktok is reportedly in talks to take up a chunk of meta's office space in downtown san francisco. sources confirmed to the chronicle that tiktok, again owned by chinese company bytedance, is discussing subleasing about three floors at 181 fremont street, an official lease has not been signed, but negotiations are reportedly moving forward. meta's 57 story

based startups. rocket exploded just seconds after it launched in the air. a huge plume of smoke filled the area and flames shot up. no one was hurt and crews did get the fire under control. so they say the rocket was carrying a small government satellite. spacex one is trying to become the first japanese company to place a satellite into orbit. no one was hurt, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation. >> wow. 610 this morning as we

the ntsb has announced it will hold a two day hearing in august about the alaska airlines jet that had the door plugged. blow out earlier this year. we're also learning the problems plaguing the airplane maker could force some airlines to reduce their flight schedules. as abc news reporter emma nguyen explains, the impact it could have on the industry. >> this morning, new details about this terrifying moment a door panel blew off an alaska airlines plane in mid-flight in january. the airline now confirms the boeing jet was scheduled to be taken out of

service that very night for maintenance. the new york times reports warning lights had previously alerted the crew to a possible pressurization problem, but the plane continued to be flown for ten days. boeing and its supplier, spirit aerosystems , have reportedly failed dozens of faa audits since that door panel incident. the faa reportedly observed mechanics at spirit using a hotel keycard to check a door seal and spirit mechanics applied. don soap to a door seal as lubricant. most of these problems go back to a failure to follow basic procedures, so this will be what boeing needs to do. >> go back to basics blocking and tackling of making sure that the airplanes are built the way that they're designed to be built. >> boeing's manufacturing woes are rippling across the industry . southwest, which only flies boeing jets, now, says it will stop hiring pilots and flight attendants and may have to reduce flight schedules because of delivery delays from boeing. united airlines also imposing a

hiring freeze in alaska airlines is warning of possible schedule changes. more than 2800 boeing jets are in service nationwide. a recent poll found only 18% of passengers have high confidence that the planes are properly maintained. in response to the concerns, boeing saying we are squarely focused on implementing changes to strengthen quality as difficult and as painful these inspections are for boeing. >> they will help them get back to basics, to be able to begin to earn the trust of the faa and the flying public. >> and when abc news, washington. >> new lawyers for scott peterson say they are eager to get their investigation into claims that he was wrongly convicted underway. peterson appeared in a san mateo courtroom yesterday through zoom. he was convicted of killing his pregnant wife, laci, and their unborn son in 2002 and dumping her body in san francisco bay. the los angeles innocence project took up his case recently, and has filed a

brief on his behalf with numerous exhibits. the group claims evidence was withheld from peterson's lawyers. >> the defense was entitled to those at the time of trial. mr. peterson has been waiting 20 years to find some of these police reports and audio recordings and video recordings that should have been provided. >> the people have never been provided with an unredacted copy of those reports. we still do not know who these witnesses are. they're anonymous to us because we had not yet. >> that was dave harris from the stanislaus county da's office. he asked the court to reveal the name of some witnesses whose names were whose names were blacked out in recent filings. nothing was decided during this hearing other than the judge setting additional dates. you can revisit the original scott peterson case and follow updates for the current case, all on abc seven news.com. >> san mateo county supervisors took their first step in opposing at-at's effort to get rid of land lines. they voted to direct the county attorney's

office to bring a resolution forward to formally oppose that effort. supervisors say residents in rural areas can't afford to lose the, quote, life saving technology. the vice president of external affairs for at&t california spoke at a board meeting yesterday. >> a land line while it's you know, feels like it's great and secure, it's actually not. i mean, you can't leave your house when your house is burning down with it. it's not perfect. >> the california public utilities commission has to approve at-at's proposal for the company to actually get rid of land lines. supervisors in marin, napa and sonoma counties also took up the issue yesterday. all oppose at&t s request. >> an italian company has conducted what it says is the first test of magnetic levitation, or maglev transport, on a railway track. >> so this video shows a prototype going about 40 miles an hour on the track. maglev creates a cushion of air that physically separates the vehicle

pick up. here's future tracker wind speeds 5 p.m. the wind advisory does begin. those winds generally between, say, 15 and 25mph, but they strengthen even more overnight tonight and first thing tomorrow morning, you may wake up to some of these winds in our hills. particularly, we could have gusts close to 50mph. tomorrow is just a really windy day all day that continues into friday morning as well. before the winds really back off during the day friday. and that sets the stage for lighter winds over the weekend. not out of the question. we can have a couple of isolated trees come down and also some isolated power outages just because of the duration of this wind event highs. today we're into the 60s with a lot of sunshine turning breezy later on this evening. tonight it's all about those winds and temperatures elevated. were mainly staying in the 50s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have those gusty winds coming our way tomorrow. they back off on friday the weekend looking great. and then early next week above average temperatures and spring officially arrives tuesday evening guys.

for services on the first day of ramadan and that's when someone noticed what they thought was a firearm inside a bag that the man had placed on the ground. >> the suspect was getting ready to leave, and the victim ultimately tried to get in between the suspect so he couldn't get back to the handbag where he had seen the handgun inside. a scuffle ensued and the suspect tried to get his handbag back. during the altercation there, the victim was assaulted and was sprayed with pepper spray. >> police arrested the suspect, 48 year old david margoliash, at his san rafael home. they say they found the pepper spray, but no gun. he's now facing charges of unlawful possession of pepper spray and disrupting a religious ceremony. police say the victim was treated for minor injuries at the hospital. new at six san franciscans can request more refunds from recology, the chronicle is reporting the state supreme court denied recology's request to hear its appeal of a

convicted in connection with the january 6th attack on the capitol. he has repeatedly claimed they were wrongfully imprisoned. nearly 1400 people have been arrested in connection with the insurrection, and hundreds of them have pleaded guilty. nearly 500 have received prison sentences. >> robert f kennedy jr, who will be running for president as an independent this november, is apparently zeroing in on a running mate. and it's an interesting list. the new york times reports. north california native and uc berkeley alum aaron rodgers and jesse ventura are on his short list. rodgers would be an interesting choice since he's the qb of the new york jets, and the height of the campaign would coincide with football season. now, ventura would also bring star power. the former wrestler served as minnesota's governor. >> senator bernie sanders is giving a san francisco supervisor a national boost in a heated race. he endorsed dean preston, who is hoping to get reelected for his district five seat. sanders said preston is a part of a new generation of

progressive leaders who have the courage to address wealth and income inequality. preston is running against bilal mahmood, who has the support of a well-funded political action committee. san pablo police are asking for your help to find two women accused of stealing a car that had a toddler inside. >> yes. on monday, a mother's car was stolen with her two year old in the back seat on california avenue. officers recovered that car in richmond, with the child inside and unhurt. oakland police zeroed in on the suspect using pings from the victim's cell phone and that's when three women in a stolen car led police on a chase. a 35 year old woman was arrested and is now facing kidnaping charges. the other two got away. anyone with information about the suspects is urged to contact the san pablo police department. $3 million in federal funding is coming to san mateo county in the wake of last year's mass shooting at two farm sites in half moon bay, and this money will be going to the half moon bay farm workers ownership

project. the county says it's going to be used to add 20 housing units, as well as a rec space in that area. that deadly shooting of seven people last january brought the working conditions and living conditions of these farm workers to the forefront. >> a california lawmaker is pushing a new bill to standardize active shooter drills in schools. assembly bill 1858 would provide guidance on drill tactics, including requiring schools to notify parents beforehand and making a school wide announcement prior to the drill. starting the bill would also prohibit the use of simulated gunfire to make it a potentially less disturbing event. it comes after several us schools implemented active shooter drills, which some say were a traumatic experience. >> i texted my mom, i'm like, goodbye, just in case anything was to happen. it makes me more anxious to be in school, and it makes me more aware of my surroundings in a way that i don't particularly like. >> active shooter drills have taken place at 95% of us public

because of storm damage, and now some residents are concerned it's going to take too long to fix it. we're talking about morada road, which is a key thoroughfare for residents and for businesses. san mateo county officials changed it to a one lane road because of safety concerns, but they've not given a timeline for repairs. the manager of the historic miramar beach restaurant says she wants customers to get to the restaurant without being confused. just making it a one lane road is not a solution. >> you would hope to see them doing work now. now it's just like they put a band-aid on it

and they're they're gone now. >> the department of public works will be holding a neighborhood meeting about the road in two weeks. supervisor ray mueller says the county will figure out how to stabilize the road. berkeley's mayor and ohlone tribal leaders are planning to speak today about a plan to return some sacred land to the tribe. the city council unanimously approved that proposal yesterday to turn over the berkeley shellmound. the land at university avenue and fourth street is currently a parking lot, but for thousands of years this was a burial and ceremonial ground. one of the ohlone elders reacted to that news. >> i thought we were going to be fighting and fighting and fighting. yeah, but i'm so happy. so, so happy. i think it's a great thing that they did . and i know that there's people out there that really care. >> the current owner of this land will get $27 million in exchange for the property. and the majority of that money will come from a trust that works to return land to native peoples.

>> the california supreme court is going to take up the fight over people's park next month. justices will hear an appeal in the case that blocked uc berkeley's plans to build student housing on that site. this comes as students and alumni are asking the university to reopen people's park. they held a news conference yesterday as the park is still closed off by shipping containers and surrounded with cameras. the university says it will soon look for a developer, but students say they want the opposite. >> we don't have a developer for that yet because we want to settle the legal issues first and then absolutely, we're going to find a developer. there's a lot of interest out there. >> you have no developer, and that's really not what we want. we've told you like what we want and you're not listening. >> it's been two months since uc berkeley closed the park, and law enforcement arrived in riot gear to stop protesters. the redevelopment project is on hold amid that pending ruling from the state supreme court that you just heard about, people's park

will stay closed until a ruling comes. >> parts of south san francisco getting a makeover under a new pilot program. >> state officials unveiled the reconnecting communities project south san francisco is one of three california cities where underutilized highways will be converted to restore community connectivity. the state secretary of transportation says this program is one of a kind. >> the first of its kind in the entire country where state is saying yes, we've had some harms, we've made some mistakes, and we're here to correct some of those mistakes and harms in partnership with the community. >> the plan in south san francisco is to reduce access to barriers created by highway 101, el camino real and railroad tracks. public works crews are still working on repairs on the third street bridge in san francisco, which is right next to oracle park.
