>> local officials look to pump the brakes on waymo after state regulators gave the driverless car service the green light, despite local opposition. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we'll have that story for you in just a moment. but we're going to start here with a serious situation today. inconvenience certainly at sfo traffic just came to a standstill for hours today at the international terminal. pro-palestinian activists demonstrating outside and inside the terminal demanding a ceasefire in gaza. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has the impact. the protest had on both travelers and airport business. >> they sang, they clapped, they drummed. hundreds of protesters shut down part of the international terminal at san francisco airport to get their message across. today here's how things looked from sky seven. we cannot stay an orderly any more. demonstrators say it was part of

a global day of action to demand a permanent ceasefire in gaza and an end to u.s. financial support for israel. military travelers, flight crews, people coming and going through the area got a taste of detours and delays as they blocked the road, so we stuck there for almost 25 minutes. >> i think it's just a noise, people. i understand the issue, but i don't think it's the right way to do it. >> demonstrators say the airport protest was about forcing people to take notice. >> we know that there's people that were inconvenience, but we want to make sure that we have our message be heard loudly and clearly. >> airport officials say passengers were rerouted from the international terminal to other terminals. a large number of uniformed officers were also on standby. >> we also took advantage of our airtrain light rail system. we set up a remote drop off area for passengers that might normally be coming to the international terminal. >> some travelers say the minor inconveniences they faced are worth it for the greater cause. >> this should be happening. we

need some sort of reform, so i think this is a good thing to protest. >> according to law enforcement, there were 100 demonstrators at each one of the gates. she and gate a, and there were a bunch more demonstrators just outside the international terminal. after about three hours, demonstrators walked out of the terminal. we hit the 158 minute mark, which is just over, you know, two and a half, three hours. >> the significance of that is today marks 158 days of this genocide. >> at the end of the day, airport officials say things ended peacefully. no one was arrested and no flights were delayed at san francisco airport. suzanne vaughan abc seven news. >> all right, let's talk now about waymo and local officials deciding to or considering any pumping the brakes on waymo. supervisors appealing the puc's decision that they think there are too many unresolved issues to allow waymo cars onto our local streets. >> that's right. abc seven news

reporter lena howland has the story. >> driverless taxis roaming the streets of san francisco could be coming to san mateo county soon. the service expands to los angeles and austin thursday. >> i don't want to hear about any more accidents, although some drivers in daly city worry the technology isn't ready. >> i think we need more time to get to get this, these cars ready for the road. >> waymo's expansion across the state was temporarily suspended last month when county supervisors asked for a review period. it was expected to last up to 120 days, but it got the green light after 11 days. after the cpuc says waymo updated their passenger safety plan. >> it was truly a slap in the face. >> now, less than two weeks later, san mateo county supervisor david canepa says the county has filed an appeal with the enforcement arm of the cpuc. >> what we're asking is for them to really consider what we had said in our initial letter, just this communication of working

with public works on infrastructure, working with the fire department, working with the sheriff's department to this date, waymo hasn't talked to our department heads like, beyond the wild west, which is why south bay state senator dave cortese is working to pass a bill that would give local governments control over autonomous cars instead of the state, a bill already formally supported by san francisco, los angeles, oakland and san mateo counties through their own resolution, says that we need to create a system right away. >> you know, to do just modest regulations, modest controls, ordinary normal traffic controls , to make things safe for our community. that's only going to happen if we get our local cities involved. >> waymo says they will continue to engage in cpuc process and remain committed to our long tum approach of dialog and partnership with city officials. waymo said they have not expanded their service here on

the peninsula just yet, and there is no set timeline for those plans, either. in daly city. lena howland, abc seven news. >> the house overwhelmingly passed a bill today that would ban the popular social media app tiktok in the us. the ban would take effect if tiktok's parent company, chinese owned bytedance, does not sell the app in the next 180 days. lawmakers say they are concerned about the ties that bytedance has to the chinese government, while others express free speech concerns. the bill now heads to the senate . president biden says he would sign the bill into law. also in washington, a bipartisan effort to protect postal workers in the u-s. today, congress members from ohio and pennsylvania introduced the protect our letter carriers act. the bill will accelerate the replacement of tens of thousands of mailbox keys, boost prosecutions and review sentencing guidelines, robberies of mail carriers increased again in 2023 despite postal service efforts. last week, a postal carrier was held up at gunpoint in oakland. two

days later, the same carrier had his truck broken into as he delivered his mail. fortunately, he wasn't hurt. >> more than a week after last week's election, the only statewide measure on the ballot is still too close to call, and the margin is shrinking. proposition one would use billions in bonds to provide housing for the homeless and the mentally ill. right now, it is 50.1% for yes. the number of yes votes outnumbers no votes by about 10,000. so as you can see, it is very close. the deadline for people living in their rvs to leave san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood has been extended. the metropolitan transportation agency had given the rv residents until today to move out, finally enforcing a long standing ban on parking from ten at night until six in the morning. they now have until march 28th. those living in their rvs have begun a letter writing campaign seeking to overturn their eviction, claiming they're well supported by residents in the neighborhood . other residents say they need to go, calling the vehicles an

eyesore. >> unsafe working conditions are creating controversy at a san jose housing project intended to build a better bay area for hundreds of unhoused people. the city's largest modular housing site, located at branham and monterey, is expected to open in july after it was initially scheduled for april. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey takes a look at the issues that still have to be addressed. >> work on san jose $70 million emergency interim housing site continues on. branham lane, the city's largest transitional housing project, will feature 204 rooms within the three story structures. four hundreds of unhoused. it was originally slated to open next month, but a look behind the fences shows there's still a lot of work to be done. >> you have non-compliant code issues in there. you have mold. it's just horrible. unfortunately, it seems to be a bigger problem, though, because we've had this exact same thing happen just down the street from that project at another modular housing project, mauricio

velarde is the director of compliance for south bay piping industry. >> he's also a watchdog for issues involving union workers like what he saw with his own eyes at this project. workers first told him about the extensive building issues they also voiced concerns over wage theft. >> my opinion is t that it's simply greed. it's simply greed. uh- you have bad actors and they're bottom line is to make as much money as possible. unfortunately, at the expense of the taxpayer, and ultimately the, the unhoused, the most vulnerable in our society at a wednesday press conference, mayor matt mehan once again pushed the importance of solutions for the unhoused, including quick build communities, despite a city press release saying the project would be opened in april, mehan now says the opening day has always been this july. >> he says the role of the city is to audit issues and make sure they're fixed. >> we need to make sure every unit is safe and clean and dignified. if any of those units do have mold or water damage, the contractor on the site will

have to replace them. if anybody has not been treated fairly in terms of their hours or pay or whatever it might be, we will ensure that the contractor makes that right. >> velarde hopes that's true for the workers sake, but he's still concerned that each of the two quick build communities he's investigated in the city had the same problems in san jose. dustin dawsey abc seven news. >> in the south bay, police detained a student and recovered a b-b gun. this afternoon, willow glen high school in san jose was put on lockdown just after 12 p.m. because of a report of a student with a weapon on campus. police investigated and found the student with a b-b gun. the lockdown was lifted just after 2 p.m, and parents were allowed to take their students home to the east bay. >> now, antioch city council did not pass a measure that would have cracked down on illegal sideshows. the new ordinance would have imposed fines and penalties to deter the dangerous street shows. no city council member was willing to second the motion to hold a vote. city council member mike mark barbanica says the measure wasn't tough enough. he says any

but in that area. this morning, the mayor officially announced a deal to turn the berkeley shellmound over to ohlone tribal leaders. the city council unanimously approved the proposal yesterday. as we reported, the land at university avenue and fourth street is currently a parking lot. but for thousands of years it was burial and ceremonial grounds for the tribe. >> we acknowledge and honor the original inhabitants of berkeley. the documented 5000 year history of a vibrant community at the west berkeley, shellmound and the ohlone people who continue to reside here in the east bay. >> the current owner of the land will receive $27 million in exchange for the property. the majority of the money will come from a trust that works to return land to native peoples. part of our effort to build a better bay area is to highlight the organizations that give back to our community in powerful ways. >> today, we are spotlighting camp okayasu, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer. abc7 news

reporter stephanie sierra introduces us to beckett and his journey to becoming okayasu strong. >> going through cancer treatment is really isolating, really emotional and really hard . >> meet erika and blake posnanski, the proud parents of three boys, dillon, tanner and beckett. when beckett was four years old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that affects the blood and bone marrow. he actually started with what we thought was a stye in his eyes. >> he had a swollen eye. >> a acute lymphocytic leukemia or al doesn't normally appear that way. >> we for a couple of weeks thought he actually just had something in in his eye. not really thinking much of it. >> it wasn't until a checkup appointment the head of the er came in. >> 80% of his bone marrow was cancerous, a diagnosis that changed their world. >> it's very overwhelming. >> i remember when i would be going into clinic with beckett,

up in california. the debris destroyed one home that appeared to be undergoing renovations and damaged at least two others. the slide opened up a giant fissure, and a pool looks to be right on the edge of it. firefighters drained the pool to reduce the weight on the hill. people were inside of two of the homes when the landslide hit, and they all made it out safely, but certainly in the middle of the night. scary. >> yeah, very scary. all right. nothing scary about our weather today. it's gorgeous. >> picture perfect. sandy. keep this coming. >> yeah, i will definitely keep it coming. good evening to all of you. it is absolutely gorgeous outside as you look at a live picture from our santa cruz camera, you might want to head to the beach over the next few days because it is going to be nice. some people already have that idea. the winds are gusty over the higher terrain. atlas peak 27 miles an hour. mount eminem 33 and mount diablo

28. although not terribly windy at the lower elevations, it is a little breezy. gusts 18. in san mateo, 23 rio vista wind advisory is in effect for our hills until 11 a.m. friday. for the valleys, it will go up 10 p.m. tonight until 5 p.m. tomorrow. the concern is the north northeasterly winds 20 to 30 miles an hour. with those gusts 45 to 55 miles an hour will cause the potential for some tree limbs going down, some outages and definitely secure any loose objects you might have in your backyard. here's the reason why high pressure is quickly building in behind the departing low pressure. and so the wind is flowing right over us. we're sandwiched in between the high and the low, and that pressure gradient will only get stronger as we head into the next couple of days, which will mean windier conditions. right now on live doppler seven, we have a few high clouds, but that's about it. temperatures at this hour. in the 50s and 60s, we did manage to get up to 70
