inches between now and tomorrow morning. it's a wet heavy snow that's been coming down really all morning so far. it's expected to be the biggest snowstorm of this season. if we get 9 inches, it will be the biggest snowstorm in denver since 2021. george? >> we can see it. okay, mola, thanks. more trouble for boeing after an emergency landing for an american airlines plane. gio benitez is tracking the safety concerns for boeing. good morning, gio. >> hey, george. good morning. been a rough two months of pr for boeing. every time there's an issue with a plane, it puts the company back into the head lines. this american incident is no different. that emergency landing at lax. this morning an american airline boeing 777 traveling from dallas to los angeles forced to make an emergency landing after reports of mechanical problems. this video capturing the moment the plane, carrying 249 people touched down at lax with a possible flat tire. this comes on the heels of other incident on boeing planes in recent days. on monday, hydraulic fluid began leaking from the bottom of this

boeing 777 as its departed sydney for san francisco, forcing the plane to turn around. this newly released video shows more from what happened the moment this boeing 787 dreamliner suddenly dropped thousands of feet midflight on its way from sydney to new zealand up rooting passengers from their seat, tossing them around the cabin. at least 50 people were treated for injuries. while many of these incidents were older planes and may have more to do with maintenance, they put boeing back in the spotlight, as the company promises to change its safety procedures at its manufacturing plants, including added layers of inspection. stan deal, ceo of commercial airplanes saying boeing will soon deliver a comprehensive plan to the faa following "the new york times" report saying boeing failed dozens of faa audits with nearly 100 instances of noncompliance after that door plug flew off a 737 max 9 in january. >> most of these problems go back to a failure to follow

basic procedures. so this will be what boeing needs to do. go back to basics. >> in that latest incident, american airlines tells us the plane ultimately landed safely and passengers were able to get off normally. no doubt about it, aside from this, still so many questions for boeing. >> glad to hear they were safe but still scary questions to be answered. gio, thank you very much. we turn now to the latest on the battle over tik tok. the house voted overwhelmingly to pass a bill that would ban the app from the u.s. if its chinese owners don't sell it. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with more on that. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning to you. it is rare to see a vote like this in the house. democrats and republicans coming together to pass a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban on tik tok. this morning a ban on tik tok now one step closer. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: after the house

overwhelmingly voted to force tik tok's chinese parent company to either sell the platform or face a nationwide ban in the u.s. >> this is not an attempt to ban tik tok. it's an attempt to make tik tok better. tic tac toe, a winner. >> we are in a cold war with china. some of my colleagues want to ignore this fact. >> reporter: the fbi and top intelligence officials sounding the alarm, warning the chinese government could use tik tok to access the personal information of 170 million americans and even interfere in u.s. elections. >> the risk in terms of propaganda, the risk to influence our election are just too severe. >> reporter: tik tok's ceo denying those allegations. >> we have invested to keep your data safe on our platform, free from outside manipulation. >> reporter: in china, facebook, instagram and you tube are planned completely. the version of tik tok available over there is mostly educational and much different from what's in the u.s. >> the chinese don't believe tik tok is safe for their kids. they don't allow it.

they allow a tailored version. >> reporter: tik tok launching an all out pressure campaign. >> keep tik tok! >> reporter: dozens of content creators flooding washington, saying they depend on tik tok for their livelihood and the community it creates. including brandon hurr. >> have you heard of this? >> reporter: after losing his job during the pandemic, he turned to tik tok to promote his business. >> my whole business would be devastated. yeah, i would lose the opportunity to connect with millions of people on a regular basis, and the community that i have worked really hard to build would be gone. >> reporter: how much of your sales are driven from tik tok? >> 100%. 100% of my sales. >> reporter: some lawmakers who did not support this bill said it did not do enough to address the root problems of protecting data privacy for americans across all social media apps. even though president biden has a campaign tik tok account, he said he would sign this bill into law if it does reach his desk. but majority leader chuck shumer making no promises to move quickly saying the senate plans to review this legislation. right now there are no plans for

a vote, george. >> long way to go. okay, rachel. thanks. now the latest ruling in the juror georgia election case. the judge threw out several charges against president trump and his co-defendants. that comes with a decision expected soon on whether the da will be removed from the case. senior national correspondent terry moran has the story. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. the judge has dismissed three of the counts in this election interference indictment against donald trump. there may be more to come. the problem the judge ruled the counts are too vague. trump and other defendants are charged with soliciting georgia officials to violate their oaths under the u.s. constitution and the georgia constitution, but they don't specify the indictments don't specify what clauses of those constitutions. that puts the defense ats an unfair disadvantage, the judge ruled. the ruling is a win for trump and the others but they are a long way of getting out of the legal woods. the bulk of the case remains.

meanwhile, fulton county district attorney fani willis, is waiting to find out if the judge will disqualify her and her office from the case that she brought against trump and the other defendants. judge mcafee must decide if willis' romantic relationship with a special prosecutor she appointed for this case creates a conflict of interest. defense is alleging there may be financial motivation for willis to keep this case going. the ruled expected by the ends of the week. it would delay this trial for months if the judge did disqualify willis, and would throw the whole case into chaos. robin? now the race to rescue americans stranded in haiti, as violent gangs increase their grip on the capital following the resignation of the prime minister. matt rivers is in neighboring dominican republic with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. overnight things relatively calm in port-au-prince. some taking advantage of a lull in the fighting in order to

escape. this morning as haiti spiral into chaos, dozens of u.s. marines were choppered into port-au-prince. the elite anti-terrorism unit in place to reinforce security at the u.s. embassy which remains open. members of congress stepping up, organizing a private evacuation of ten americans, including best selling author mitch album who wrote "tuesdays with morrie." >> when we got there, the violence in haiti really sparked. i felt responsible that we had to get those volunteers out. >> reporter: they were trapped for a week, unable to leave the orphanage his charity runs. >> every night we were there, you could hear the gun fire. not just a fired shot here or there, but rapid fire, automatic rifles. it was getting closer every night. >> reporter: he says he was heart broken saying good-bye to the children, saying he's luckier than most, who are still trapped there with gangs controlling at least 80% of the city. >> when we were in the helicopter, all crunched up on

top of one another and one of the pilots said, you've now cleared haitian air space, you're in the dominican republic air space, it was like some applause by some of the people who were inside. but for my wife and i, it was kind of a gut punch because we realized that our kids are still there. >> reporter: but the vast majority of americans, like joy doleman, can't escape. she's calling on the u.s. government to begin evacuations. >> every day i wake up thinking, lord, please send us a chopper, please send us an airplane that's gonna come an rescue us today. >> reporter: now this crisis could certainly cause a spike in migration from haiti. two administration officials telling abc news that guantanamo bay is considered to be a temporary processing facility for migrants should a mass exodus occur. rebecca? >> thank you. we turn to the nearly 1,000 branches of the dollar tree and family dollar that are closing. elizabeth schulze has the latest.

these companies were hit with inflation. hard to charge a dollar when something is now $3. >> reporter: that's right. we've seen people focused on buying necessities because they are feeling the strain of inflation are cutting back on discretionary purchases. stores that have struggled to win over customer, like dollar tree, which also owns family dollar, said it's closing 600 stores in the first half of the year. it will close nearly 400 stores over the next couple of years as those leases expire. we've seen store likes dollar tree and dollar general have expanded into urban and suburban markets. one side effect of that is that independent grocers can get pushed out. with dollar stores closing some communities are worried they will be left in food desserts. they're accusing these discount chains of making the problem worse that they helped create. there are a lot of ripple effects when these stores close. it comes at a time when one out of every eight americans is facing food insecurity, george. >> okay, elizabeth. thanks.

[ laughter ] we'll hear sam in a minute. following a lot of headlines including the major cross country storm moving east. it's brought tornados, huge hail, damaging winds. denver's under a major storm warning. this will be their biggest snowstorm of the season. 16 people were injured in an explosion during training exercises at an fbi facility in california. orange county swat team members were conducting a training exercise. all were treated at nearby hospitals. at least one had to have leg surgery. a new blood test is showing promise in detecting colon cancer. a study published wednesday found the test caught 83% of the cancers. the test would not replace a colonoscopy, but scientists say it could dramatically increase the number of people who get screened. remember, colorectal cancer is the second highest cause of cancer in the u.s. anything to increase that screening is important. we've got a lot more ahead, including how amazon pharmacy is teaming up with eli lilly. that's coming up.

right now the parents of a 7-year-old girl who was tragically killed when a sand hole on a florida beach collapsed on top of her. they sat down with erielle reshef to talk about their daughter sloan and share an urgent warning. oh my goodness. good morning, erielle. >> good morning to you guys. this is such a vital message. sloan was such a light. her parents say that losing their daughter say losing their daughter to this tragic accident has turned their lives upside down. now just weeks later, as we head into the spring break season, they want parents to know about this hidden danger in the sand and are sharing sloan's story to save others from anguish. >> the kids were looking up finding seashells and playing in the sand. >> reporter: jason and teresa mattingly say they were enjoying the perfect beach day with their two young children when the unthinkable happened. >> we go to the beach. you think of water safety. this never, ever once crossed my mind.

of course, looking now i'm like, of course. so that part is really frustrating. i'm like, man. >> reporter: last month 7-year-old sloan and her 9-year-old brother maddox were digging in the sand at this ft. lauderdale area beach when things took a devastating turn. the sand hole suddenly caved in on them. sloan was completely buried beneath her brother. >> told me this happened in an instant. >> it's kind of a blur. maybe my mind protecting itself. but it just happened so fast. in my mind i had her in my hands but the weight of the sand was too much. >> it didn't matter. we were right there. it was just a hole. there's nothing. then it just became chaos and horror. >> reporter: several people frantically calling 911. >> the father started yelling for help. the child is caught in a hole in the sand. >> my husband is up there and a bunch of men are digging on the beach. >> reporter: people were desperate to help you.

>> there was a woman who, she -- i told her to call 911. turned out she's a nurse. once maddox, our son, got out of the sand and they were checking him out on the beach, she stayed with him. i wanted to be digging. so she sat with him the whole time. she was so kind. >> reporter: the family says it took nearly 20 minutes to fully get the children out of the hole several feet deep but say it felt like time stood still. sloan was rushed to a nearby hospital, tragically she did not survive. what would you say to those people who were on the beach who jumped in? >> sorry. i'm so sorry. you witnessed pure horror. >> thank you to the first responders. >> the hospital. everyone. >> everyone tried their hardest. unfortunately, it didn't work in our favor. >> reporter: experts warn sand holes, even relatively small ones, pose serious danger on the beach.

take a group of kids, ages 5-11 years old, all varying in height. the shortest 3' 7", the tallest 4' 11". experts say any hole dug should be no deeper than the knee of the shortest person digging it. in this case about 9 inches. was there a life guard on duty on the beach or was this sort of an open public beach? >> i think it's just an open public beach. >> yeah. that would be something we would like to see change, if we can. again, we don't place blame on lauderdale by the sea. >> no. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news, the town of lauderdale by the sea says they are developing a national safety campaign, telling us, we will share it with as many coastal communities as possible to help prevent another unimaginable tragedy. we're also discussing how we monitor our beach. a local ordinance to ban digging on our beach, and the best way to honor sloan. >> it is all about love.

we are back with the dramatic statement from the estranged wife of the suspected long island serial killer, asking people to give the accused murderer the benefit of the doubt. stephanie ramos joins us with more on that. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. the estranged wife of rex heuermann claims her ex-husband is not capable of the crimes he's accused of. while also expressing sympathy to the victims and their families. this morning, the estranged wife of suspected serial killer rex heuermann

releasing a statement saying she is giving her husband, quote, the benefit of the doubt. heuermann is suspected of killing four women near gilgo beach on long island, new york. all of them sex workers. asa ellerup said she sympathizes with the victims and their families, and that nobody deserves to die in that manner adding, quote, i will listen to all the evidence and with hold judgment until the end of trial. >> we're releasing a statement that might take some of the public heat off her. this is more an attempt by her to maintain some sort of standing in the local community. far more than it is an attempt to gain any sort of legal advantage for her husband. >> do you have anything to say about why you're here? >> reporter: ellerup filed for divorce after her husband's arrest. 60-year-old heuermann was charged in 2023 for the murders. in january of this year he was indicted in the killing of a fourth woman. the women were all found in 2010

buried near gilgo beach. investigators say they have evidence ellerup was out of town when the murders took place and have not been charged or named a suspect. heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges. the attorney for asa ellerup said she has visited remembering several times and wanted to reiterate she doesn't believe he is capable of this. heuermann is scheduled to be in court next month. she said she wants to see all the evidence before she takes a side. >> okay. thank you, stephanie. we turn to a look at amazon pharmacy, teaming up with eli lilly to deliver weight loss drugs and other medications. eva pilgrim has that story. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, george. home delivery for medications is not new, but with the crazy demand and shortages for these weight loss and diabetes medications, this move is huge. but the question now, will this new plan help those who need these drugs get them or will it make it too convenient and drive demand even higher?

what a gorgeous morning here in new york city. we're gonna turn now to our gma cover story. i had the privilege of sitting down with actress regina king, who stars in the powerful new movie "shirley" about shirley chisholm's historic run for president. regina's return to the screen and public comes two years after the sudden death of her beloved son ian. this is her first tv interview since that tragedy. we talked about her son's legacy, how she's been healing, and what she calls her favorite thing, being ian's mom.

♪ for nearly 40 years, she's reigned as one of hollywood's most versatile talents. >> that train does not take off unless we're both on it. got it? >> reporter: for her breakout role in the '80s sitcom "227" to her oscar winning performance in "if beal street could talk." regina king is known for humanizing complex characters. >> if i can't get the nomination, i can still get it. including her latest role starring in the bio pic "shirley." how did you prepare to play shirley? >> it was a 15 year journey. i think 15 years ago i wasn't ready to play shirley. i may have thought that i was then, but i wasn't ready. i needed to live more life. >> regina is joined by her sister raina, who co-produces

and plays a key role in the film that chronicles her rise in 1992 as she becomes the first black woman to run for president. >> we felt like there were so many people who did not know who shirley chisholm is, who she was, who she is. and that bugged us. when you're a first, when you set out do something that no one else has done before,less no example of that for you. that's a lonely road to travel. >> yeah. just so happens to be an election year. >> yeah. we were like, no, it needs to live and be in the space now so that if it's going to inspire anyone, especially young people, to be involved with the political process, we've done something right and we've also honored shirley and we've followed through with what shirley has unboxed.

>> for the last couple of year, regina has been taking much needed time away. in january of 2022, her dear son ian tragically passing away by suicide. you dedicated the film to your beloved ian. >> my ian. >> what has this timespan, these last two years, been like for you, regina? >> oh, wow. you know, i'm a different person, you know, now than i was january 19th. i am -- grief is a journey, you know? i understand that grief is love that has no place to go. i know that it's important to me to honor ian and the totality of who he is.

i speak about him in the present because he's always with me. the joy and happiness that he gave all of us. >> but behind that joy and happiness, ian's mental health took a toll. >> when it comes to depression, people expect it to look a certain way. they expect it to look heavy. people expect that -- >> it's okay. >> to have to experience this and not be able to have the time to just sit with ian's choice, which i respect and understand, you know?

he didn't want to be here anymore. that's a hard thing for other people to receive because they did not live our experience. did not live ian's journey. >> i think a lot of people, a lot of people, are going to appreciate that you said it was his choice. and that you recognize that. >> i was so angry with god, you know? why would -- why would that weight be given to ian? of all of the things we had gone through, the therapy, psychiatrists and programs.

and ian was like, i'm tired of talking, mom. my favorite thing about myself is being ian's mom. and i can't say that with a smile, with tears, with all of the emotion that comes with that. i can't do that if i did not respect the journey. >> their close bond, always on full display, at regina's red carpet events. i thought about him when you were on the stage at the oscars, because you were wearing orange. that's his favorite color. >> yes. >> i remember he would escort you. >> yeah, yeah. >> are there moments where he was always there with you physically, that -- not as a trigger, but -- >> oh, it's a trigger. >> is it? >> absolutely. absolutely. so sometimes it will trigger is just laughter. most times, as of recent, it triggers a smile.

a message now from olivia munn. she reveal she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. morgan norwood has the story. >> reporter: she's known for her roles on "the daily show" and "the news room." >> how did that happen? >> by spending 30 years being dumb as a door knob. >> reporter: but this morning olivia munn is opening up about a real life battle of her own. breast cancer. in an emotional post on instagram, the actor sharing this video and a series of photos, getting candid about her diagnosis and ten month long treatment journey, under going a double mastectomy writing, i have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed, i can't even

count. munn revealing it started in february of 2023 with a proactive test for cancer genes. she writes, i tested negative for all including braca, the most well known cancer gene. yet two months later she said she was diagnosed on both bretts a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer. >> for this cancer, this is a specific type of breast cancer. it only makes up about 10% of diagnoses. it expresses a certain protein. that protein actually quickens the growth of cancer cells. >> reporter: munn sharing that she wouldn't have discovered the cancer for another year during her routine mammogram if it wasn't for her ob/gyn, who decided to calculate her breast cancer risk assessment score followed by an mri and biopsy. and munn encouraging other women to talk with their doctor about the breast cancer risk assessment tool. here's what it is. it looks at things including age, age of first menstruation.

perimeter, but the center has the shelf stable goods for good cost saving. the other thing, shop on sale. and then home process. if there's greens on sale, bag them at your home and freeze them yourself. don't be afraid of the store brands. they're fantastic, as well as those huge shopping clubs. that's where you can get your pantry items like these. go with your friends and family to make the most of that big shopping trip. >> lot of good tips right there. you start with pork chops and rice. >> absolutely. pork chops and rice. super delicious. i have got pantry staples like white rice, apple cider vinegar. i'm using veggie bouillon instead of the broth because i don't want to pay for the water so i'm using the cubes. you're going to see some items showing up in the recipes over and over again. that's a great way to lean into those cost savings. >> one is rice. you have it here with frozen fish. >> that's right. i'm using frozen fish because it's less expensive.

you can also use tinned fish, george. what i say to people, george. this is a scaffolding. swap in and out whatever you have access to an whatever's least expensive for you at the moment. if you have greens that are on sale, whatever leafy green you have in your area, go for that. you'll notice onions and scallions are showing up multiple times in each recipe, boosting that flavor. >> kids will always go for mac and cheese. what do you have here? >> this is my favorite. we are featuring a bag of frozen veggies. do not fear the frozen veggies. they're picked at the top of the growing season so they're just as nutritious. you're going to see good pantry staples showing up here really leaning into that cost savings. i did something so interesting. i use the stock of the broccoli to make a slaw. usually that gets discarded. i have up cycled it. >> you've done something interesting here as well. a skillet dish. you used drum sticks. they are less expensive. >> exactly. drum sticks are less expensive and full of flavor. that's what we want to do. we want to lean into flavor so you're going back to your table

welcome back. this morning we are sharing one person's inspiring health journey. >> that's right. everyone has their own motivation for losing weight. one man chose to change his lifestyle in order to fulfill his and his wife's dream of starting a family. take a look at their story. >> i was always on the heavier side. the first time i remember going on a diet was 4th grade. i was 430 pounds. >> for isaiah caldwell, being overweight was a struggle all his life. but starting a family finally motivated him to make a change. >> my wife and i were trying to get pregnant. i found out from a doctor my weight may be playing a factor in that. i was terrified. i had tried to lose weight in the past an failed at least three times. i started on a diet that i heard about on a podcast called the carnivoire diet. immediately started to see results.

weight lifting became a hobby, something that i enjoyed and wanted to go to the gym for every day. >> his results were beyond just weight loss. >> my mental clarity was through the roof. i didn't have as much pain doing basic daily tasks. my lipid pan looked phenomenal. >> it has led him to encouraging others online. >> this weight loss journey has been the best decision of my life. i feel better than ever and am so hopeful for the future. isaiah is here with us. come on out. yes! wow! what a transformation. >> look at you. >> love it. before and after. isaiah, welcome to good morning america. so nice to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> have a seat here. congratulations. you've made such a transformation. that before an after. what changes have you made in your life? how does it feel?

>> there's been a lot of changes. but it feels incredible. i definitely don't regret it. it was one of the best decisions i have ever made in my life. it is hard work. >> i know when we're talking medical, i want to be specific. you were engaged with your medical team throughout the process. we recommend folks talk to their doctors before beginning a weight law journey. but you followed what is called the carnivoire diet. explain your process. >> out of the gate, i didn't really know how to lose weight. i just wanted to jump on a diet right then and there. when i came home from the doctor's office, i was listening to a podcast. learned about the carnivoire diet. blood work is really important. it's motivating, too. when you see it going in the right direction, makes you want to keep going. >> i have so much compassion for you and your wife and everything you went through on the fertility journey. what changes were you thinking about making in your life? why was that so important to you? >> yeah. to give you a back story, my wife and i, we had been trying

for about a year. we hadn't had any success. going into the doctor's office, i was nervous that it had to do with my weight, but i didn't know. once i found that out, i just hit a rock bottom. i felt i had done this to us. even though naturally, it may not have been that. it may have been other factors. i just knew that i wanted to do whatever it took to prove to myself that i did everything i could to rectify the situation. >> your story and the fact that you, even your workouts became a hobby for you, it's just so -- it lets people know what the key to success is. we met amanda, your wife. tell us how this actually -- i know you're super proud of him. did we get the picture? the phone and picture of you? >> we took a picture of amanda. we need one of both of them. >> tell us how this worked for your relationship. >> it's amazing. my wife and i have always had a strong relationship. we've been married for eight
