ashley. thanks for joining us. the cameras are part of a state pilot program from governor newsom signed into law last year. oakland and san jose are also included. >> the proposal, released today by sfmta, is for each of san francisco's 11 districts to get at least two cameras. most will be concentrated in the northeast part of the city on some of the most dangerous streets. >> tonight, abc seven news reporter jared stone has the strong reaction from drivers and pedestrians. >> this camera is already up along san francisco's embarcadero, but if you're a driver in the city, you'll want to be aware of 33 new cameras that will be going up scattered across san francisco's 49mi■!s. they're called speed safety cameras that will automatically ticket you for speeding. >> i'm totally down for the speed cameras. i think the drivers are a little psycho on this street. >> he's referring to an area on bay street near van ness avenue it's one of the proposed spots for a new speed camera.

>> i think the drivers in the city in general just feel like they've kind of owned the place and have gotten a little too uh- a little too over their skis when it comes to following the rules, you know, people gunning it from one block to the other, they still hit a light and they slow down. >> but i mean, there's really no reason to be going that fast in the city. >> yes, it seems that a lot of pedestrians we spoke with love. the plan. >> some people go way too fast and it just leads to people cutting other people off and just kind of general stress. you won't be ticketed until you go 11mph over the speed limit. >> that will cost you $50. 16 over will cost you 100 bucks and at least 26mph over. will cost you $200. >> we're really excited about it. we think that this can save lives. we're locating cameras outside of school sites, outside of parks, outside of senior centers, places where there are very vulnerable uh- san franciscans that we absolutely want to protect. >> but not everybody is fully

into the idea. i think it'd be a lot nicer if more resources went to like, more, bigger problems. >> personally, when i walk outside, i don't think, man, i really wish that guy got a ticket for speeding. like i understand it. >> but you know, the city's already expensive. it's just. >> and you feel like this is just milking us for money? >> yeah, milking us for money. >> andrea sparrok believes there are lots of city issues that need to be addressed. foremost like crime and potholes. she wants to know where this fine money is going to go. >> any fines associated with the program would go to pay for additional traffic calming improvements throughout the city , but at this point, officials say they still have to buy the cameras from a vendor. >> so there is still work to be done. the goal here is to have these cameras installed by early 2025. the first 60 days of the program would involve warnings only in san francisco. j.r.

stone, abc seven news tonight a school board held off on a plan to ax grades six through eight at an east san jose school. >> parents are upset and say the closure of aptitude community academy at goss will hurt the school and the community it has served. many spoke at a school board meeting tonight. >> the district only explains to us that our children are just a number. as parents, we know that our children are not only numbers. there tomorrow, the future alum rock union school district superintendent says the school is unsustainable. >> it has a very low enrollment currently, and so if we don't do anything right now in 3 to 4 years, we will be considering closing the entire school. >> the school board has given themselves and city staff 60 days to try to come up with a revised budget or alternative plan that wasn't just windy at your house. >> it's been a windy day all

over the bay area. a great day for windsurfing, certainly, but trees and leaves were all whipping around from the north bay to down south the flags blowing in the wind and trees out in san jose as well. we're not done with this quite yet either. no. >> so we want to go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel, who is staying on top of what we should expect. sandhya. yeah. more windy weather. that second burst of wind. dan and irma right now getting underway. >> and it is going to continue overnight tonight. so take a look at a live picture from our mount tam cam. it is a very shaky view from mount tam winds are gusting over 30 miles an hour right now. mount diablo, you can see 48 miles an hour. it's a downsloping wind. atlas peak 30. it hasn't translated all the way down to the surface tonight. it did earlier 28 miles an hour at hayward, 24, in santa rosa. we do have that wind advisory until 11 a.m. tomorrow. gusts 45 to 65 miles an hour, especially over the higher

terrain. notice the winds will peak overnight going into tomorrow morning, and then they really drop off as we head towards tomorrow afternoon. mount diablo topped 70 miles an hour today. it was 70 at mount eminem, oakland hills and big rock ridge 48 miles an hour. healdsburg hills 62. with that offshore flow, it is really mild. i mean, these look like high temperatures right now. 66 in hayward, it is 64 degrees in santa rosa compared to 24 hours ago. we're running 12 degrees warmer in santa rosa. i'll let you know how long the wind and the warmth will stick around. coming right up, dan. >> all right, sandy, thanks very much. you know, a great mix of live music, dance and theater really can add so much to the vibrancy of a city. >> it can. and in san jose, organizations in the arts can now apply to a new grant program helping to promote them and downtown tonight, abc seven south bay reporter lauren martinez takes you to two local stages, working to build a better bay area. >> okay, good. that way we're

family, they've made the difficult decision not to reopen horn barbecue at mandela parkway location. he says the decision stems from a multitude of challenges beyond last november's fire, including vandalism and what he calls the continuous theft and crime in the area. and you can get the full picture of crime where you live with the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. it shows you a wide range of statistics on public safety over the years for san francisco, oakland and san jose. you'll find it on abc seven news.com. >> the case against the protesters arrested for shutting down the bay bridge has been dismissed. protesters accepted a diversion agreement to do five hours of community service, and the group as a whole will pay about $4,500 in restitution, 78 protesters had been charged for shutting down the bay bridge on november 16th in a cease fire protest. the protest blocked westbound traffic on the bridge for more than two hours. >> kamala harris has become the first vice president to publicly

visit a women's health clinic, where abortions are provided since the supreme court overturned roe v wade, 21 states have banned or restricted access to abortion. the minnesota planned parenthood clinic she visited saw a nearly 100% increase in patients from out of state. >> how dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interest? we have to be a nation that trusts women. >> harris and biden are touting abortion access as a key issue in the presidential campaign. president biden is counting on voters to turn out in support of him for this cause as well. >> this might come as welcome news if you're planning on going to work tomorrow. >> a new bill would shorten the current workweek from our normal 40 hours to 32. so no friday work day needed. the legislation is written by senator bernie sanders and california senator laphonza butler. while the workweek would drop down to 32

secretary steven mnuchin said he wants to put together a group to buy the app. more groups are likely as few american companies could single handedly buy tiktok. it currently has an estimated value of anywhere from 100 to $250 billion, a staggering. >> a san francisco is opening its first ever career center inside city hall. mayor london breed announced today on x that san francisco's department of human resources is looking to streamline the city's hiring process. the office will provide services and resources monday through friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. last year, a grand jury report said too many vacant positions were going unfilled because of the city's laborious hiring process. >> media agencies are continuing to take a stand against kensington palace tonight after it released a doctored photo of kate middleton over the weekend. the global news director of afp, a french international news agency, spoke on a podcast today about the ordeal. he said kensington palace is no longer a trusted source. afp is one of

several outlets that killed the photo, which was supposed to be an update on kate, who had abdominal surgery earlier this year. now, the afp boss says they will be more vigilant about kensington palace content. he adds said in the past they've previously killed content from north korea and the iranian news agency after miami recently launched a campaign to crack down on rowdy spring breakers. >> another opening up its doors for party seeking crowds. miami beach is bracing itself for what it says will be the wildest party week yet the south florida city has been urging spring breakers to stay away from the city after two people died in chaos that broke out last year. but fort lauderdale, which is about 30 miles north of miami, is welcoming these crowds. >> fort lauderdale has always been a welcome place for spring breakers. in fact, this week we've seen really large numbers of kids from various colleges around the country. we have a very good crowd that comes here. >> the mayor also adds that once kids graduate college, they

should consider fort lauderdale as a place to raise a family. >> in the east bay, there will be a full closure of 680 southbound going through pleasanton this weekend. it runs from the 580 connector down to koopmann road this will be in effect from 9 p.m. tomorrow to 4 a.m. monday. caltrans is doing an early repavement project. they've opted to do the entire section all at once, as it would have otherwise required 40 nighttime closures. >> well, sunday is saint patrick's day, but the celebration in san francisco gets going the day before with the city's annual saint patrick's day parade. we got a preview from the man who's going to be leading all of the fun parade, grand marshal tom hunt. >> we're having a big celebration in the civic civic center plaza, where we have irish music and dancing and uh- good food available, a lot of activities for children, an and adults. >> this is the 173rd yr ofan francisco's parade. it will star saturday at 11:30 a.m. at

santa cruz, san jose, san rafael, 68, oakland, concord and san francisco. so here's a live view from our emeryville camera and a look at san francisco's temperature. because of this downsloping wind, it's still 62 degrees. that northerly wind of 15 miles an hour playing a role. so why the windy conditions? high pressure built in. you've got the low pressure retrograding across southern california. the two are too close together. we're sandwiched in between. and that's why we've had the winds. they'll continue tomorrow. the numbers right now across the rest of the bay area in the 50s and 60s. i mean, when you're 64, in santa rosa, you know, it's warm. and speaking of warm, el nino, we've been talking about it for months. the latest from the climate prediction center. there's an el nino advisory out today, lowers sea surface temperatures. in february, they noticed that they were actually lower than average. and they are predicting an 83% chance that we transition to neutral fro el nino to neutral this spring, 62% chance

of la nina developing this summer and historically, we usually see that la nina after an el nino that is strong. so stay tuned. here's a look at the headlines tonight. tomorrow gusty winds continue. friday forecast is sunny and springlike again on the weekend. weather warm inland fog at the coast which means the coast begins to cool hour by hour, 2:00 in the morning you will notice those gusty winds. those winds continue to ramp up at 7 a.m. 36 half moon bay, calistoga. still gusty at around 11 a.m. calistoga is 43 miles an hour, but the rest of you starting to drop off. and even at 4 p.m, little breezy, but not as windy across the region as we head into tomorrow evening, the winds will be much lighter. we go hour by hour in those temperatures tomorrow afternoon. by noontime in the 60s, by the early afternoon. you're already in the 70s. tomorrow morning, i think. really mild and windy. 40s, 50s. clear skies tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. you're looking at 74, in santa clara, 75 san jose. warmer than average. taste of spring redwood city 7369
