people died in lake view when suspected tornados ripped through the region. residents there calling it pure devastation. >> our laundromat is gone, the plastics building is demolished. downtown is bad, very bad. >> reporter: tornados on the ground. in winchester, indiana, homes and structures torn apart, people searching through the night for anyone who may still be trapped. >> we don't know the extent of the damage on the south end of time. we do know there have been some buildings and homes that have been completely destroyed. >> reporter: cars mangled, power lines strewn across roads, leaving thousands in the dark. this building unrecognizable, metal siding wrapped around trees. >> i heard what sounded like a train. i started hearing sirens. things like that. my wife had gotten a text from a friend. her parents lived down the road. their house is gone. >> reporter: in selma, up to 50% of structures have been damaged. >> this is the first time

anything like this that i can recall has happened in the town of selma. >> reporter: and in arkansas, also dealing with flooding. rain in some places as much as 5 inches. janai? >> and the spring hasn't even started yet. alex, thank you. now the heavy snow out west. mola lenghi joins us from golden, colorado. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. we're about 15 miles west of denver in golden, colorado, where it got slammed with about a foot of snow over the last 24 hours. you can see it piled up here, burying cars. there is a car underneath here. finally snowfall beginning to taper off. the city of denver getting about 10 inches creating a travel nightmare on the road. vehicles spinning out, some people stranded for hours. outside of denver, multiple stretches of interstate 70 shut down. it wasn't just the roads. more than 800 flights in and out of denver international airport

were cancelled and delayed. the winter storm warning is going to expire this morning as the storm begins to leave the region. >> all right, mola. thank you. let's get right to ginger tracking where the storm is headed next. ginger, good morning. >> unfortunately, we've got warnings still popping at this hour in alabama. i'll show you those. 350 severe storm reports including ten tornados across such a broad area. this morning you're waking up in alabama, tuscaloosa, birmingham huntsville, with tornado warnings and severe storm warnings embedded in this area. today and through the evening, you're going to see big storm, potentially with large hail, especially san antonio, austin. keep an eye on parts of mississippi and alabama the next four hours or so. if you don't have to drive, do that. >> absolutely. if you're in a storm zone, stay safe. thank you very much. we're going to turn to the verdict in the trial of the father of the michigan high school school shooter. james crumbley was found guilty on all four counts of unvoluntary manslaughter for his son's rampage that left four students dead.

trevor ault is here with that. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, gio. so james and jennifer crumbley were called to oxford high school the day of the shooting. they bought their son the gun he used in the massacre. the parents declined to take him home early. there were many other red flags. now two separate juries found it wasn't just bad parenting, it was criminal. this morning another unpres unpressdented verdict in michigan. james and jennifer crumbley, both guilty of involuntary manslaughter, the first parents held criminally responsible for their child's school shooting. >> they could have prevented this shooting and saved these kids' lives. >> reporter: a jury of six men and six women, many of them parents and gun owner, staying late at the courthouse thursday, announcing james crumbley's guilty verdict after 11 hours of deliberation. >> this verdict does not bring back their children, but it does mark a moment of accountability. >> reporter: james crumbley bought the shooter the weapon he used in the massacre. father and son seen on video

just days before. prosecutors say the parents ignored multiple red flags in regards to their son's mental health. now the community remembers the four oxford students who were murdered. many of their family members in court for both parents' trial, now calling for action to stop future gun violence. >> we can put people on the moon. we can build sky scrapers. huge monuments like the hoover dam. and we can't keep our kids safe in schools. >> reporter: james and jennifer crumbley will be sentenced the same day, april 9th. they're facing up to 15 years in prison for each count. the parents say they're not done. they still have a prominent lawsuit against the school. that's still on going. >> an unprecedented case, trevor. thank you. we turn to the latest in the georgia election interference case. there are major developments in

two other criminal cases against former president trump. aaron katersky is tracking it all from atlanta for us. >> reporter: whit, good morning. the ruling just coming in from judge scott mcafee at the fulton county courthouse rejecting former president trump's attempts to disqualify the district attorney from the case. the judge found there was no evidence of an actual conflict in district attorney fani willis' relationship with a prosecutor she hired to help run the case, nathan wade. he did say there was an appearance of impropriety and that a reasonable person could conclude that willis did not exercise proper professional judgment. to remedy that he gave willis two choice. either pack up her entire prosecution team and go, turn the case over to somebody else, or just get rid of nathan wade. but the case can continue. the judge saying dismissal of

the indictment is not the appropriate remedy, nor is disqualification of a constitutional officer necessary. willis is likely to accept wade's resignation and move forward with the case, even as former president trump and other co-defendants who tried to disqualify the d.a. will likely move for an appeal. janai? >> all right, aaron. we do turn to the subway shooting. passengers were frightened. a man shot with his own gun. erielle reshef joins us live outside the new york city subway where it all happened, and happened during rush hour, erielle. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, janai. that happened during rush hour. just to set the scene, that packed subway car was full of passengers when a fight broke out. it escalated into gun fire, causing chaos and panic. much of that was caught on camera. this morning harrowing cell phone video capturing rush hour mayhem and gun fire ringing outs in the new york city subway. terrified passengers ducking for cover thursday evening, huddled

together, screaming in horror in this crowded downtown brooklyn station. >> close the door! close the door! >> as i'm coming out, you hear pop, like three, four shots. pop, pop, pop. then the doors open. everybody comes flying out. >> reporter: police say chaos erupted around 5 p.m. after a fight on a train car. passengers seen here trying to break up the situation. but the altercation only escalating. >> took the firearm, started walking towards the 32-year-old who was on the train yelling at him, walking toward him in a menacing way. >> reporter: the 32-year-old man grabbing the weapon, shooting his attacker in the head. >> shots fired. active shooter. shots fired in transit. >> reporter: this video showing the wounded man taken away on a stretcher, rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. and within seconds officers flooding into the station, arresting a suspect.

owned by country music super star luke bryan. stephanie ramos is here with the latest as that investigation continues. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning. 22-year-old riley strain vanished. he was last seen at that bar a week ago. multiple agencies are now searching the area for any sign of him. this morning luke bryan lending his voice to the desperate search for missing missouri college student riley strain. the country star posted on social media, y'all, this is serious. praying for his safe return. the 22-year-old was last seen friday with his fraternity brothers at luke's restaurant in nashville before vanishing. the restaurant owned by bryan. >> right now we have no idea what happened with this gentleman. we don't believe there's any crime involved, however. all of our resources are dedicated towards locating him. >> reporter: newly released surveillance video, strain is seen running through a parking lot last friday night losing his balance and falling.

a different camera showing the 6' 7" native walking down the street hunched over. strain's friend said they lost sight of him just before 10 p.m. when he was kicked out of the bar. he said their group tried to call him and use snapchat location to see if they could find him. both were unsuccessful. authorities going building to building, using boats with sonar and drones to scan the nearby river. law enforcement say there's no indication of foul play. >> the last ping that they had was off a cell tower near top golf which is on the other side of the river. however, the radius is about two miles so it doesn't give us a direction of travel or more detailed information. >> reporter: strain's relatives on the ground in nashville since last saturday, are pleading for answers. >> he's always texting me, calling me, facetiming me. he's always in touch with me. always. >> reporter: investigators say they are leaving no stone unturned in this investigation. guys, they are searching through security footage from the area. also, asking anyone for information.

>> such a mystery. let's hope they find him very soon. thank you very much. we're going to turn to new details on the sudden death of a seemingly healthy indiana mother while flying home from vacation. eva pilgrim is here with what we're learning from that case. good morning. >> her family and friends tell us she appeared to be the picture of health. her death coming as a complete surprise. no foul play. this morning new details in the shocking death of an indiana mother who died after suddenly falling ill mid return flight from vacation. >> it was unexpected for anyone that's 41 years old, active. >> reporter: according to a new document reviewed by abc news, the autopsy finding stephanie smith died of natural causes, specifically a dissection of the left carotid artery. >> carotid arteries are a pair of the most important arteries in our body. with a dissection, that can

ultimately disrupt the flow of blood into the brain. >> reporter: stephanie's family and friends saying there were no obvious warning science. she had been on a five night vacation with her boyfriend and two friends at an all-inclusive resort in the dominican republic. minutes into her flight home, she lost consciousness. >> her head kind of tilted back in her seat. her eyes were kind of rolled in the back. she started convulsing. >> reporter: a doctor and nurses on the flight performing cpr. the plane making an emergency landing where she was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead. just hours before that flight, stephanie seen here smiling in a photo with hotel staff. her friend, maria, who took that photo, saying she in no way seemed unwell. >> she was an athlete growing up. >> reporter: abc news learning stephanie had a history of high blood pressure, but it is not known if hypertension contributed to stephanie's death. >> we can say we know with turbulence in the air, there is some potential for trauma there.

it's still happening as we speak. waking up south of san angelo. from say junction back to del rio, you're in a severe thunderstorm watch. birmingham, alabama, into the northern parts of alabama, the mountains there. also could see damaging winds with embedded tornados inside there. large hail is going to be possible throughout today especially with those southern storms. austin and san antonio, i want you on the lookout. anywhere from jacksonville to montgomery, tuscaloosa included, this will be an on going thing all day. so keep an eye on those storms. have two ways to get your warnings. >> ginger, thank you very much. we're going to turn to a new report on what may have caused a flight to new zealand to take a sudden plunge, injuring at least 50 people on board. this morning we're learning of a possible cause for the terrifying moment seen in videos circulating online, showing panicked passengers aboard this flight. >> i looked up to see the gentleman that was sitting next to me on the roof of the plane. >> according to the wall street journal, a flight attendant hit a switch on the pilot's seat

while serving them a meal. that engaged a motorized feature, pushing the pilot into the controls, forcing the plane's nose down. that switch, the journal says, isn't supposed to be used while a pilot is sitting in the seat. the report cites u.s. industry officials briefed on preliminary evidence from an investigation of the incident, which injured at least 50 people aboard the boeing 787 dream liner. this revelation contrary to what one of the pilots told one passenger when he asked what happened after the sudden plunge. >> he said, my instruments, i just lost them. then all of a sudden they just came back instantly, within a split second. but enough to cause the plane to do whatever it did. >> the chilean based airline saying at the time the plane experienced a technical event during flight which caused strong movement. the investigation is on going. it is led by chile's civil aviation industry. it's really important to figure out what exactly caused this. if there's an issue with that plane, they'll have to issue an alert to airlines all around the

j. ryan, let's start with you. when kate and charlie approached you with this idea, had to take a moment to think about, right? you're peeling back the curtain into your writing process. how did you first respond to that? >> oh wow. it's a tremendously vulnerable thing to write and put your work out in the world. now i'm sharing it publicly. i have just got to say, to writers at home, don't do what i'm doing. [ laughter ] find your own route. yeah. my own route is pretty peculiar to me. >> we'll be pulling out your underwear drawer for our audience. yeah. one of the things we've realized in this show is the writing processes are unique. we talked to a writer who starts with the last line and works backward. we had one writer who wrote a scene in the middle and wrote backwards and forwards. there seems to be no wrong way to do it. we're looking forward to getting a front seat to the insanity of the process. >> yeah.

>> absolutely. >> so what is the process that you say is unique for you? >> well, both of my parents were big readers but my mom was a big influence on my life. when she went back to college to get her english degree when i was a kid, it was so inspirational to me. and i knew that she always wanted to write a novel. but, unfortunately, she passed away at 55 having not started one. so when i sit down i think i want to write books that she would have written, or perhaps the books she would have enjoyed reading. i put her in my characters to keep her alive. she passed away over 20 years ago. that's 20 years of love i didn't get to put anywhere else. >> exactly. you've said in all of the three books, all of which have been very successful. you've told us she's in every one of them.

that in some way, she's influenced that. now i gather, we catch you at a good time. you're just beginning this fourth novel. so what are you gonna do? how is your mom gonna be in this one? you said she died at 55. >> that's right. >> she never got to live the second half of her life. what are you going to do? >> i'm going to pick up where she left off and try to imagine what her life could have been going forward. >> you're going to give her the second act. >> yeah. >> i'm interested, if you know. you're on your fourth book now. are you familiar with what happens to you mentally when you write a book? like by page 80 i'm questioning why i started. by 120 i think i'm a genius? does your partner, brooke, does she know what your mental patterns are? does she know when it's time to give you oxygen, for instance? >> brooke follows my mental pattern. we share a lovely 4-year-old autumn, who gets more mom

attention when dad's upstairs writing. i feel like every time i sit down i'm writing my debut novel all over again. i sit down. i look at document one in word and go, what do i do again? >> yeah. >> but a little like john abeck, who you mentioned earlier. i like to know my ending and i start from there. i have a sense of what the ending is. i have a sense of what the tone will be. i know the destination and the writing process is plotting the course. >> you write to that destination? >> that's right. >> that you have to figure out how to get there. >> yeah. >> you know how you're going to start? >> no. i usually write my first chapter near the end. i figured that out by writing my first novel. i'm going to try to nail these first 10, 15 pages. they may be the only pages people will ever read, so i have got to really get them down. >> charlie came from your perspective. where did this idea come from? what do you hope people will take away from the series? >> it came from my husband, who occasionally has a good idea. he married me. [ laughter ]

but he came to me and said, you seem to love talking to writers about how they do what they do. i said i think it's amazing because i can't imagine a process more riddled with self-doubt and self-criticism. he said you should talk to a writer from start to finish. see if they will talk you through what they do. and what about j. ryan? i was like, yeah, he's crazy enough to do that. >> j. ryan has been a friend of yours for years. >> yeah. >> so what are the pitfalls in your writing? is there something you think, oh, that's going to be trouble? or do you think, this could be really interesting and kate and charlie will be a sounding board? >> well, you might have to tune into the podcast to find out. there. >> okay. >> these are what are going to penetrate your chicken and make it super flavorful. let's put the lid on. there we go. there we go. we've got a premade marinade here. i'm going to pour this on for you. you're going to just start to mix it around. i prefer to use these. tongs are your friends. latinos, we just put it all in there. you want to get the flavor all over this. watch out for your white shirt. tumeric will stain your clothes. that's one of the ingredients. basically what you're doing here is getting that flavor into the chicken. it's almost grilling season so this is good for you all to start working on. typically marinade it for eight hours or overnight. you can even marinate it for a full day. right? then we're going to move over here. >> you're the expert.
