is the sixth incident involving a united flight since monday of last week. no one noticed the panel was missing until after the plane had landed. >> it had taken off from san francisco with nearly 150 on board, and made it to medford, oregon, without any sort of issues. but nonetheless, this is alarming. >> abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with an aviation expert about whether passengers should be concerned about this friday. >> another problem for a united airlines flight involving a boeing plane, this time a flight from sfo losing an external panel. >> well, heavy things fall off. jetliners is not our favorite methodology. it is in any way, form or fashion, rare and troublesome. >> john nance is an abc news aviation analyst and he's referring to united flight 433, the plane taking off just before 1030 this morning, landing in medford, oregon, just before noon. it's there where crews discovered the missing panel. >> did somebody fail to close something which would have been

a human factors uh- that it was a fatigue or do we have a situation here that was somehow in maintenance? those questions will all have to be answered. >> in a statement, united says it will thoroughly examine the plane and perform repairs and conduct an investigation to know how the damage occurred. boeing saying in an email it's deferring comment to united about the carrier's fleet operation, also including some information about the boeing 737 800, which has been in operation for 25 years. >> you know, one of the questions that i've been asked so many times over the years is how long can a jetliner stay in service indefinitely? we've got b-52s now that are older literally than any aircraft commander flying them in the air force. as for the 139 passengers and six crew members on board, they likely weren't at any risk. i don't think we had any real danger here in the air. we had danger of anybody who something might fall on. they came off an aircraft. that's always a big concern. the big concern for the faa as well as all of us.

>> the incident comes on the heels of a handful of mishaps with united flights in the last few weeks, including a wheel falling off a flight, departing from sfo. but the experts say would be passengers shouldn't be worried. >> it's not only safe to fly, it's so much safer than even driving to and from the airport. and that's not just statistically true. it really is true. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> this is just the latest in a number of incidents involving united planes. last week, flames burst out of an engine of a plane that took off from houston . that was because it sucked in some bubble wrap. >> then a tire fell off of a plane as it took off from san francisco international airport for japan. it heavily damaged at least one car in an employee parking lot. >> another flight from san francisco had to make an emergency landing in los angeles because of a hydraulics problem. on the same day, a united plane slid off the runway in houston. >> this past monday, a flight headed to san francisco made an emergency landing in sydney, australia, because of a maintenance issue happening now.

>> a large section of interstate 680 is shut down for the weekend. the closure started just a couple of hours ago. caltrans has closed the southbound lanes of 680 from the 580 junction down to koopman road. that's about nine miles of road a caltrans is repaving and says the work should be done before the monday morning commute. >> in the north bay, a massive redwood tree fell on top of a house in forestville. happened around 245 this afternoon. while it was really windy, the house is on river road near scenic drive. no one was home at the time. the owner took it all in stride. >> at first we got an alert that the power was out and then uh- got a phone call from our son saying that he had some bad news , and he came over and to the house and told us that the uh- tree had fallen on the cabin. and i'm like, yeah, we've been waiting for this for years. so as you can see, the house sustained major damage, forcing the city's building inspector to red tag it and deem the structure uninhabitable. >> three major storms in the

santa cruz mountains led to a partial closure of a critical road. two weeks ago, a landslide on mountain charley road has limited access since february 29. the slide is affecting the entire neighborhood. >> both of our cars are on the other side of the slide. we've already had a couple vehicles get stuck. trying trying to make it up there. >> we have to walk a good quarter mile, you know, carrying , you know, dog food and groceries. >> there's only one way in and out. internet and water lines are threatened by the slide, and propane is in limited supply. a santa cruz county officials say there's no repair date in sight at this point, and they would need state and federal emergency funds if they were to get it paid for. >> well, we've experienced a nice warm up, but also some of those gusty winds over the past couple of days was blustery. >> today, a meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more on whether things are going to calm down this weekend. sandy. >> yeah, it's definitely much calmer tonight. >> dan and anna take a look at a

live picture right now from our kgo roof camera, and it is a serene scene, which is exactly what you want, setting you up for the weekend. but it wasn't like that earlier today. in the last 24 hours. here are the peak wind gusts. mount diablo 72 miles an hour. oakland hills 51. big rock ridge up in marin county 54. and you can see 40 to 52. pretty common across the region. winds a lot lower. relaxed for sure. hawkeye 19 miles an hour. as we look at the temperatures for today, they were 8 to 11 degrees above average, coming in at 75. in san jose, santa rosa, napa, 76 in san rafael, 73. oakland san francisco 74 degrees in concord. here's a look at your planner for tomorrow morning. it's a cooler start, coastal fog at noontime, and although it is mild, bay and inland, it will be cooler at the beaches. the cooling breeze will spread to all areas. i'll be back with a look at your entire weekend forecast plus the changes that are ahead. saint patrick's day coming right up, ama. >> thank you. sandhya in the

east bay, an update on a story we brought you earlier on abc seven news. alameda rescue workers have recovered the body of a man who was previously seen struggling in the water around 430 this afternoon over by ballena bay. the alameda fire department's divers and swimmers attempted to rescue the man, but were able to unable to get to him before he went under. the accomplice. accomplice in the 2020 fatal oakland federal building shooting will spend the rest of his life in prison. a judge sentenced robert justice today to life without the possibility of parole. justice drove codefendant steven carrillo to oakland during protests over george floyd's murder. both were followers of an anti-government group. carrillo opened fire on two guards, killing one as justice drove off. the killing set off a week long manhunt that ended with carrillo killing a santa cruz county deputy. he pleaded guilty two years ago and is serving a 41 year prison sentence. >> new developments in the federal women's prison in dublin. a judge is taking an unprecedented step and bringing

in outside oversight. fbi agents raided the place days ago, as we reported, a special master will oversee the facility as part of a lawsuit over ongoing claims of sexual abuse. the bureau of prisons has never before faced this level of scrutiny. the prison is at the center of a years long investigation into sexual abuse and misconduct by staff. at least eight employees have been charged with abusing inmates. the fbi would not share details about monday's search, just that they were conducting court authorized activity after more than a month helping injured civilians in gaza. a doctor from the south bay is back home tonight. doctor mohamed subhi says life in gaza was like being in an apocalyptic horror movie with mass casualty incidents every day. >> we really worked with very scarce resources to be able to save lives, save limbs, half of the patients that i saw were children, many of whom lost

their parents, family and friends greeted subhi at san francisco international airport today. >> very warm reception. he spent the last five weeks at a field hospital in gaza, treating injured civilians with minimal supplies and staff. he says the hospital was built to take a few dozen patients a day this week. they helped nearly 1000 people a day. >> it's magnitudes more than what i expected, and so, still trying to process what that means for all of us as, as a global community, we >> doctor subhi says going to gaza was an easy decision to make, and he feels guilty, though, about leaving. he hopes to go back and continue his work there. new at 11. >> farm workers are taking matters into their own hands this weekend. we've reported extensively on the poor conditions they often live in. that's something they'll address at a convention in san mateo

county. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with organizers. >> hola somos el comité de plantation de la convencion de campesinos. >> these organizers are spreading the word about a first of its kind farm worker convention. >> the event was planned by farm workers for farmworkers levantar la voz. rogelio martinez, a farm worker in pescadero, says the convention this sunday is to make the workforce known and to raise their voices. the host organization, puente and coastside hope, are expecting hundreds of farm workers from half moon bay, pescadero down to watsonville to attend. >> so it's really the union of an entire region coming together to learn, but also to share about their stories and their lives. >> there is pride in the farming community and problems. primero es martinez listed decent housing for farm workers as the number one problem farmers living in shipping containers surfaced during the half moon

bay mass shooting in january of 2023. last september, this property in pah'-ha-row in monterey county was cited several times by code enforcement. lack of heating, roach infestation, lack of ventilation, missing smoke and monoxide alarms are just some of the violations. >> we were able to see both the very gross gross neglect. >> raymond cansino was the ceo of community bridges, a multi-service agency. he says the 17 unit converted apartment complex housed farm workers and their families. many, if not all, were undocumented. one unit was redtagged days later, cansino says the property owner decided to evict everyone one around thanksgiving and christmas. >> it completely undermines and destroys people's kind of sense of, groundedness. >> cansino says some of those tenants are seeking civil litigation against the landlord. >> until we have legislation at the statewide level that mandates a certain percentage of

at san francisco's embarcadero center shopping plaza has been suspended because of an incident from wednesday. caught on video. the guard told two young men not to go into the store because he was convinced that they were going to steal. i-team reporter dan noyes has been digging into this incident since one of the men posted that video on reddit and has some exclusive information. >> 24 year old nicholas kincade and 22 year old amir ali work at a high fashion boutique near the embarcadero center. during a break, nicholas wanted to pick up some supplies from the sephora there. >> we just wanted to, you know, i wanted to get a scalp scrubber for myself. we were talking about beauty products all day, pretty much just discussing like what we needed. >> they first tried the inside door. it was blocked, so they walked around to the street side entrance where a security guard told them not to enter the store. >> this is private property. okay, okay. >> and what have i done so far? do you want to let me know? what have i done? yeah. you're going to go in and steal. how do you

know that? how do you know that? i've been around a long time. you have no answer. you have no answer at all. >> i've been around a long time. >> i spoke to the two of them today. the first time he says, don't go in there because i know you're going to steal what goes through your mind. >> i know what time it is. i know what's going on. i mean, we've heard about the civilian times, so i immediately just start firing back and trying to get anything out of him to prove that he has something to stand on. because i know in my heart of hearts is absolutely nothing there. they tell me. >> they questioned whether the guard even worked at the embarcadero. they thought he might be a vigilante. >> do you even work at this? pardon me. do you work at this property? yeah >> can i see, like, building security? >> can i see, like, any documentation that you work here? i see, like, any documentation that you work here. >> well, i can show you, i can show you this while it's just off camera. >> you can see the guard lift his jacket a bit. the two shoppers say he revealed his sidearm. that is visible a few seconds later when he lifts his shirt and shows me a glock, and i'm like, well, that doesn't

really. >> yeah, that doesn't really help the situation right now. i don't need to see a weapon now. i just feel threatened. >> i can show you this. my id and the guard briefly showed a badge. >> a retired lieutenant inspector shield from the san francisco district attorney's office, starting there, i called law enforcement sources who identified the guard as 72 year old mike koppel. he worked for the marin county sheriff's department and then retired from the san francisco da's office in 2007. her staff says. district attorney brooke jenkins would not comment on the incident because this matter is under investigation by the special prosecutions unit of our office. the person seen in this video is not a current employee. the owner of the embarcadero complex , boston properties, emailed me that they are working with the third party security partner to conduct a full investigation into the incident. in the meantime, the security officer has been removed from our property pending the results of the investigation. koppel did not return my calls, texts and emails for comment. ali and kincade tell me they went shopping in sephora anyway.

>> okay, so we're going to go inside now because you have no reason to stop us. >> all right. you go in, you steal. >> and they came out to find an sfpd officer waiting at the door, but they just walked by and return to work. both say they never saw mike koppel before that altercation. i spoke with several people in law enforcement and security guard training, and they said what happened could be a real problem for mike koppel. we'll tell you when the investigation is over and what it concludes for the i-team. dan noyes abc seven news. >> a bad milestone in the us when it comes to measles. the cdc has confirmed 58 cases across 17 states this year. that's as many as there were all of last year. to put it in perspective, however, there were 121 cases in 2022. in 2019, there were more than 1200 cases. that was the biggest spike since 1992. >> a settlement could bring down the cost of buying or selling a home. the national association of realtors agreed to settle a series of lawsuits over excessive fees. this puts an end

to the typical 6% commission most agents charge after being accused of keeping costs artificially high. as per the agreement, they'll pay $418 million in damages and eliminate the commission guidelines. >> the settlement might spur some activity in the market because sellers have been sort of hesitant lately. but now with a little bit of extra money in their pockets, that might be a good thing. >> now, bay area experts argue not much will change here with the consistently high demand, but some argue that realtor fees could drop by 30, or that this could give rise to online brokers offering discounted realtor services. >> all right. we're going to cut right to the chase. no one hit the mega millions jackpot. so it climbs from 815 to $875 million. we still have a jazz. it's creeping up to the billion dollar mark again, making it the sixth largest mega millions in history. the last winner to take home the jackpot was in early december. okay, so here are tonight's winning numbers 13,

bright skies. temperature will come up to about 66. really mild weather in the middle and the middle of the afternoon into the early evening. in case you're just wanting to hang out here in the city. but certainly we'll get cooler later on in the evening. the reason why it's going to be mild and dry is high pressure still in control of our weather. that area of low pressure is moving across parts of southern california and arizona. did bring them some showers and notice and some snow showers over the desert southwest, but we basically have this nice area of high pressure with the subsiding air that provided us with clear skies and the warm weather today, that's changing come this weekend. temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s, it's 64 right now in san francisco. believe it or not, most areas are running lower than where they were 18 degrees cooler. the most noticeable in half moon bay, down 12 degrees in santa rosa. as the wind is switching direction. a beautiful view from emeryville camera tomorrow fog returns cooler at the coast. weekend forecast is sunny and mild, bay and inland. not quite

as warm as today and next tuesday. spring starts in the evening. in case you're keeping tabs here comes that fog, that southerly surge coming up the coast, 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. it fills in along the coastline by 4 p.m, so you will notice the difference in the air. and by sunday, we'll have a lot more fog around near the bay, around parts of the delta. so that will also further drop those temperatures. your morning numbers will be in the 40s and the 50s. it's not going to be quite as warm as it was this morning with those winds. so tomorrow morning, not windy, maybe some patches or two, a patch or two of fog near the coast. as you look at the afternoon highs. still going to be pleasant in the south bay 74, san jose 71. in sunnyvale on the peninsula, 70 degrees in palo alto, 62. in half moon bay. some fog in daly city, mid 60s. downtown san francisco 66. north bay. temperatures 72 degrees in santa rosa 69. in san rafael in the east bay 69, oakland 72 fremont. you want sunshine, you want spring. like weather, you got it inland 72 degrees in

concord. livermore 71, pleasanton 74 degrees in fairfield. now as far as next week goes monday, the ridge rebuilds, bringing even warmer weather. and then things are going downhill after that in terms of temperatures and then eventually rain chances. thursday night into friday, we go back into an unsettled pattern with more snow coming to the sierra. here's your accuweather seven-day forecast, and it does feature mild weather inland the next couple of days, although cooler for this saint patrick's day weekend, cooler at the coast as well, and temperatures do come up monday. spring begins at 806 tuesday evening, and we're going to notice the downturn in temperatures. and we bring back the r word rain level one friday dan and ama. you know, we get spring showers here. >> we'll have had a nice break.

good evening. with 17 games left, time is really running out quickly for the warriors to try to move up the standings. so the expected return of steph curry against the lakers tomorrow night. it is huge now steph missed three games after spraining his ankle last thursday, rejoined the warriors in los angeles for a workout today. steve kerr says steph will likely be a game time decision, but if he feels good in warm ups, curry will play against lebron and the lakers, a laker team they trail by one game. >> that's the plan. everything
