we have a lot of shaken up people, including one of our muni drivers and other people who who saw this situation and saw people trying to save their lives. >> now, at five, authorities are trying to find out what caused a driver to veer off the road and plow into a crowded bus stop, killing two people here in san francisco. good morning. it's sunday, march 17th. i'm stephanie sierra. we'll have more on that story in just a moment. but first, let's check on the forecast with lisa. good morning. hi, stephanie. >> good morning to you. happy saint patrick's day for those of you celebrating that a yesterday today the entire weekend. right. with a lot of sunshine around the bay area. temperatures have cooled off though. and as we look at live doppler seven, not a whole lot to show you there. fog has crept into the north bay, and as we look at the next several hours, you can see it inside the bay, the marin county coastline, and the san mateo coast throughout the day. and that will usher in a cooler coastal afternoon. but as for the rest of us, it will be mild, above average. 52 in hayward, 50 in san jose. right now, looking

at 46 in sonoma and 44 up in santa rosa where there is some patchy fog. so throughout the day today we'll get into sunny conditions starting out in the low to mid 50s through 9:00, 10:00, upper 50s to mid 60s. and then by the later afternoon we have a return to some low 70s inland low 60s at the coast with the sea breeze. and we'll talk about rain returning when we see you next. stephanie >> lisa. thank you. a small memorial is up near the spot where two people died and three others were hurt after a car struck a bus shelter. one of those killed was a child, and it happened in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to investigators. >> well, i can tell you what happened was a real tragedy. >> mayor london breed, speaking at the scene of a horrific crash at a bus stop on yolo street and lennox way car going eastbound on yolo. >> uh- struck a bus shelter which had four people, two adults and two children.

>> the fire chief says two people were killed, an adult and a child. >> obviously, there are multiple calls to 911, so police and fire worked together to uh- to treat all of the victims, to assess and treat them. and unfortunately, two were really, really critically injured and there was no hope for them. >> three people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of this suv which struck the bus shelter. at this point, it's unclear how the collision happened. >> we don't know if the driver had a medical emergency. that is all under investigation on the impact of the crash was so intense it could be heard a half block away. >> we heard a really loud crash and i thought it was two trains colliding, and then a bunch of people in the restaurant went out and looked and said not to go out there because it was, really gory. the crash happening just feet from the entrance of the muni west portal station,

which was busy on saturday afternoon. >> we have a lot of shaken up people, including one of our muni drivers and other people who who saw this situation happen and saw people trying to save their lives in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news police did not confirm if the two victims were related. >> the mayor says counselors from the city's behavioral health department will be in the neighborhood speaking with people who may have experienced trauma, and the nonprofit walk san francisco says it will hold a vigil for the victims at the crash site tomorrow in the east bay. now we're learning more about the man who drowned near encinal beach in alameda friday. they say he was 32 years old and from the central valley town of atwater, the man was seen struggling in the water before divers and swimmers tried to rescue him. they were unable to get him before he went under. his body was recovered about two hours later. bay area activists are pressuring lawmakers for new policies and funding for the unhoused voters are being asked

whether billions of dollars in bonds would provide housing for the homeless and the mentally ill. prop one is narrowly passing at the moment, with 20,000 more yes votes than no votes. local groups held a demonstration. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has their message. when the people are finally held, a call to action saturday on the steps of the state capitol, one painted fence plank at a time, local groups rallying to put an end to homelessness. >> tiny village spirit. >> we build tiny house villages for homeless people. currently, we're doing it for youth. we're doing a 100 homes for 100 youth. >> the nonprofit has also built a 25 home village in oakland, where they're cultivating a community and providing resources. >> a lot of like supportive programs into it. we put art all over everything. we try to make it very beautiful, like a place that they would want to live. it's really exciting to see things that are like manifesting in like real time, and it's

happening and there are young people who are being housed and they have a community village, and they have shared spaces and they have garden areas, and it's healthy and it's wholesome, and they just have new life. >> moni law is an activist and member of the way church in berkeley, joining about a dozen groups, putting pressure on politicians for better policy and funding for homeless support services and solutions. >> i think this is tying together what people in the community know on the ground is people that work with the unhoused and the legislators who are up in their offices who may not see what's happening. >> and when it comes to being on the ground, o'neil fernandez knows the streets well. >> i'm from the unhoused community. you know, i'm lucky enough me and my wife and my 20 month old got out of a tent two months before she was born. so i'm one to speak from the experience of myself. >> he's part of sos richmond, a nonprofit made up by staff who were previously unhoused, serving some of the community's most vulnerable. and he's hopeful his story can make an impact.

>> i've had to struggle, so i want to be here to get that voice, you know, i am one of those voices. you know, everybody i brought with me from our crew is a part of those voices. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> today is expected to be the last day for the north face store in san francisco's union square. the outdoor retailer traces its origins to san francisco's north beach. it has no other stores here in the city. the company was purchased by the vf corporation in 2000, which owns other brands like timberland and dickies. the company did not say why the store is closing. aapi leaders and community members held a memorial in honor of the victims of the atlanta spa shootings. they had musical performances, mental health speakers, and stories from activists at japantowns hotel, kabuki. >> this journey of anti-asian hate crime is nothing new. but now we have so many more asian americans in this country and the city, and so the intention is that we can come together, stand together, fight together,

and thrive together for a country that we truly belong in. >> some of those in attendance are also demanding sfpd and the district attorney's office to look into attacks on asian elders and hate crimes. allies in new york city, l.a. and atlanta also hosted events called stand together remembering 316, three years ago, eight people were killed in that shooting. six were of asian descent. in the south bay, a longtime superintendent at the alum rock union school district has been fired. the district boards, the district's board, excuse me, voted to end superintendent hilaria bauer's employment in a closed session on thursday night. she held the position since 2014. the board voted to extend her contract in 2019. the board president said the decision to fire her was made after much consideration and deliberation. bauer's last day will be on march 25th. all right. let's check on conditions outside with lisa. good morning. >> good morning. we have patchy

elections to replace the government and another group is demanding the release of hostages in gaza. today's cease fire talks will be the first time israeli israel that is in hamas officials negotiate since the start of the muslim holy month of ramadan in international mediators hoped for a six week truce before the holiday began, but hamas refused any deal that would not lead to a permanent cease fire. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu appears determined to push forward with a controversial offensive in southern gaza. world aid workers are trying to get supplies to the region and evacuate some of the wounded. one way they're doing this is the flying hospital, where they've set up beds, iv drips and ventilators to treat patients in flight. the world central kitchen says close to 200 tons of food is being brought by boat, and is now ready for distribution. >> there is no food, yara says. no water. my baby sister, we

cannot get her diapers or milk. everything has become very expensive and that is if we're even able to find it. >> doctors say a big issue is malnutrition. according to the un, one third of children under the age of two are acutely malnourished. in northern gaza, unicef says at least 23 children have died from malnutrition so far. happening tomorrow the large stretch of interstate 680 is expected to be back open just in time for the morning commute. caltrans says work is going as planned and is on schedule. crews are repaving the southbound lanes of 680 from the 580 junction down to koopman road. that's about nine miles of roadway. the agency shared the video of the work being done this weekend. the city of pittsburgh is creating a new vision for its waterfront area, and they want your help to decide. residents got a first glimpse at the renderings for a reimagined old town business district. ideas include scenic

promenades, waterfront dining stores and areas for water sports. the goal is to connect the marina to the downtown area. the proposals come after the city received $3.7 million in grants to make improvements to the central harbor park and surrounding parking lots at saint patty's day. and here's what the streets of dublin, ireland, look like right now you can see packed full of green. it's just after noon and people are getting ready to go out to the pubs early to celebrate. the holiday is a global celebration of irish heritage. now to the dublin in the bay area. this year's annual festival is underway and marks 40 years this weekend. abc seven news reporter anser hassan caught up with crowds. >> in the irish, music blasted around dublin civic center to commemorate the 40th annual saint patrick's day celebration. >> actually, this is the first

time we've been here, but it's really fun though, we're really enjoying it. >> randy hernandez and her friends were among the thousands who attended food, rides and celebrating irish culture. >> we like the dancing that they were doing. the famous dances uh- that i seen, the irish dancers. yeah, there you go. the irish dancing. >> there was a band over there playing u2 music, usually irish music. so it's irish beers. >> patrick hilliard says he makes it out every year. he and his family were dressed in green , which some say brings good luck. >> it's been a great a lot of great vibe out here. a lot of people really dressed up festive . it's really they do a good job. >> there was lots of traffic getting into dublin, but event organizers say the southbound closure of i 680 from the 580 interchange to sunol didn't seem to have much impact. caltrans says all entrances to dublin from 680 and 580 will be open all weekend, so no need to miss all the events on saturday and sunday, especially that iconic saint patrick's day parade on sunday. >> part of the reason i moved to

dublin was because of the name. i fell in love with the city when i saw the shamrocks on the street signs. >> sean day says he's a proud irish american. he's stayed till the end for the grand finale, a 200 drone light show. >> i know they probably couldn't do fireworks, so drones festival is great. got a lot of nice pictures and everyone seemed to have a good time. >> and especially seeing that the irish say on saint patrick's day, oh, erin, go bragh which means ireland forever in dublin. anser hassan abc seven news. >> the city will conclude the festival with the annual shamrock run today, along with another drone show that starts at 730. lots of fun. well, san francisco also party for the irish holiday at its annual parade downtown. the city marked its 173rd annual saint patrick's day parade and celebration. and as you can see, there was plenty of green to go around. >> you know, when it started, 173 years ago, i'm pretty sure it was all about just, you know, the irish marching. but now we have everybody. we have all the

heritages marching with us. we got the kids in the school marching with us. we got all the civic, organizers. we got the union. this thing is huge. >> crowds of people wearing green and shamrocks filled the streets. you see the dancers there and the theme of the day was unity. >> well, i mean, this is what we're all about. family togetherness. i mean, look at all the people. it's a great day and a beautiful day. saint patrick's day brings us together . >> the parade went from markets and second, all the way to civic center plaza. and take a look at this new york city had an estimated 2 million people show up for its parade. billed as the oldest and largest around, this year's did not disappoint. this year marked the 262nd running of the parade. fifth avenue was filled to the brim with bagpipers, nypd officers and you see there in green berets, irish flags and cloggers here in the bay area. it was a great day for

a parade or to head to the beach. quite a few people took advantage of the sunshine and a comfortable, comfortable temperatures that is soaked it in at the crown beach here in alameda. the question is, how long will the sun stick around? lisa is tracking the forecast. how's it looking? >> hi. good morning to you. well, you know, we're going to have the first half of the week be quite pleasant. but the second half of the week, things are really changing. we're going to see a return to cold and wet weather in fact. yeah you may have to crank the heat and mountain snow. it's all coming back. and hey, why not? right. we could use a little more. we've had a good break, and with the first day of spring arriving on tuesday, it is still going to be very pleasant out there. let's look at live doppler seven, where it's pretty quiet area of low pressure. not influencing our weather anymore. it's high pressure that's going to keep us high and dry right on through about wednesday, even probably thursday, it is 49 in oakland, 52 in san francisco with 43 in danville. so

temperatures are cool. half mile visibility, napa, santa rosa up to the north here and looking at livermore at 46, can you see the fog there in the distance from mount tam? low clouds and fog like a summertime pattern back with us. and that patchy fog in the north bay. looking at this all clearing throughout the middle of the morning hours for a sunny day today, it will be cool. maybe even a little cooler at the coast, but still above average for the rest of us around the bay and our inland valleys. and then the vernal equinox on tuesday night, ushering in spring. but boy, after that we're looking at a return to some wintry weather. so first things first. on monday, numbers go up into the mid 70s in our inland valleys. notice the oranges here pleasant around the bay with the upper 60s. and then by tuesday spring you can see it's cool at the coast, but still holding on to some above average temperatures. wednesday we'll see cooler air arrive still dry with temperatures from upper 50s to the mid 60s around the bay. a little warmer in our inland

at 9 a.m. our efforts to build a better bay area include highlighting the organizations that give back to our community in powerful ways. that's why we're spotlighting camp okitsu. it's a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families affected by cancer. and this morning, i want to introduce you to beckett and his journey to becoming okitsu strong, going through cancer treatment is really isolating, really emotional and really hard. >> meet erika and blake posnanski, the proud parents of three boys, dillon, tanner and beckett. >> when beckett was four years old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that affects the blood and bone marrow. >> he actually started with what we thought was a stye in his eyes. he had a swollen eye, acute lymphocytic leukemia or al doesn't normally appear that way. we for a couple of weeks thought he actually just had something in in his eye, not

this half hour with lisa and another nice day in store. >> yeah. we said goodbye to the offshore winds that kept everybody really warm. and the onshore winds were back yesterday. did you notice it was a little breezy in spots and cool at the coast? right now we have a bit of a marine layer out there. 50 san jose, 52 san francisco and hayward up in the north bay, 43 with fog and napa and santa rosa, 4442 mill valley. and there's a look at the patchy fog up in the north bay. so the marine layer from the marin county coast to san mateo, inside the bay around oakland. and then throughout the morning hours, it does clear, it evaporates, but it sets up right along the san mateo coast. and that's going to allow for a cool day at the shoreline. so we go through the morning hours. we're in the 50s, 8:00 by noontime, low to mid 60s. still some fog there. pacifica, half moon bay. and then as we get into the afternoon, more low 70s arrive. partly cloudy, mostly sunny there and then the upper 50s to low 60s at the coast. how many more mild days? i'll let you know in a few minutes. steph.

her white bmw across the country to kay county, new mexico, where he got a flat tire early friday on i-40, 35 year old officer justin hare was dispatched to help when, without warning, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot officer hare. >> smith then walked to the driver's side and shot officer hare again. smith pushed officer hare into the passenger seat and drove away, and officer harris patrol unit. with officer harris still inside, new mexico state police chief emotional recounting. >> officer harris final moments, the last words officer hare uttered on this earth was to offer help to a man who was about to kill him, new mexico state police say smith has an extensive criminal history dating back decades in south carolina, and he has ties to the albuquerque area. johny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> a multi-state crime spree has

come to an end after a man accused of killing three family members was arrested. the suspect, 26 year old andre gordon, allegedly became the crime spree in trenton, new jersey. that's where he reportedly a woman at gunpoint. police say he then drove to a home in pennsylvania, where he broke in and killed his 52 year old stepmother and 13 year old sister. gordon drove to another nearby home and broke in, after which he shot and killed 25 year old taylor taylor. >> daniel, with whom he has two children. at the time of the shooting, there were four other individuals present inside that home, one of which was injured after being bludgeoned by gordon with the assault rifle. >> authorities say gordon stole another car and went to a home in new jersey, where he was arrested by police after an hours long standoff. a volcano eruption sent lava spewing out of the ground and smoke into the

looking towards san francisco. you see, traffic is moving along nicely. it's 536. there could be some changes coming affecting the way you drive in san francisco this week, the community will be asked to weigh in on a proposal to add no turn on red signs in parts of the city. the new restrictions wou be implemented in the dntown area, including reets located on the north and south parts of market. here's abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez >> since 2021, san francisco's tenderloin district has had more than 50 intersections with no turn on red restrictions. one year after it was implemented, the san francisco municipal transportation agency found that 92% of drivers were complying

with the law. so the city thought, why not apply those restrictions in other neighborhoods? >> san francisco is not anti-car ricardo olea is with sfmta. >> here's what he told us two months ago on their expansion plans. >> we are in the process of expanding prohibitions on turns on red into pedestrian heavy areas such as downtown union square, and that that project will start this year. >> that plan has already started, and now they're considering expanding the no turn on red restrictions even further to include 200 more intersections north and south of market street, pending public hearings next week. how about the rest of the city? we will see citywide like new york city. are we going to be new york city? >> no. the plan at this point is not to make san francisco be like new york city. we're not at the point at which we say that every single intersection in san francisco should have a no turn on red. we want to have people understand when they're going to the tenderloin or downtown or a

heavy commercial area. oh, the reason that this sign is there is because of pedestrian safety, traffic safety has been a huge challenge for san francisco. >> ten years ago, the city vowed to get to zero traffic deaths by 2024. and here we are. and so far this year, there have been seven traffic deaths, the last one on march 2nd, a pedestrian killed by a hit and run driver in the tenderloin. even though the speed limit there has now been reduced to 20 miles an hour and turns on red lights are not allowed. still, we caught a driver trying to make a left turn on red while i was crossing the street, and while we were doing that interview in january, we caught a series of violations and that person made a that person made a right turn on red. >> do you see that? yes, yes. >> if there's no enforcement, you can change all the rules you want to and no one will take them seriously. so we do need traffic enforcement and we need traffic enforcement of speeding, running red lights. >> we cruised around the tenderloin to see if police were actively stopping drivers for

traffic violations. instead, what we found were police searching a car for possible firearms, as they have other challenges. >> they're dealing with violent crime and we're dealing with fentanyl sales. and there's a lot of challenges. challenges in the tenderloin. but the officers do a great job on traffic enforcement to the extent that they can. >> how many citations have been written? >> yeah, i don't have the exact number. but what i do know is that we're also very grateful for the highway patrol that have been really good partners with us for the last year. they've written a lot of citations as well, beginning last year, the california highway patrol agreed to assist sfpd by enforcing all traffic violations in the tenderloin and surrounding areas. >> and next year, the city will install 33 speeding cameras throughout the city in an effort to minimize the number of traffic deaths. >> so we'll see what happens. that was leon melendez reporting . other cities are also having this problem, too. last year, pedestrian deaths reached a 40 year high across the country, and now places like chicago, la

today, and there will be a post-race festival on site. it all kicks off at 7 a.m. today it rained during last year's marathon, so the runners are certainly gearing up for a nicer turnout today. how's it looking, lisa? >> yeah, it is looking nice. you know, temperatures still will be above average not only today but for the next several days as high pressure continues to keep us dry. the onshore flow has returned. low clouds, fog. kind of like a summer, like pattern right around spring time. 49 right now in oakland it is 52. in hayward with 44 in santa rosa and 50 in san jose. patchy fog in the north bay and the view from mount tam. you can see that marine layer. so low clouds and fog this morning for some. but elsewhere we're starting out with sunshine for so for saint patrick's day today, the cooling continues. with that sea breeze at the coast, so it's been very mild averages should be in the low to mid 60s and will be into the low 70s again. our warmest inland valleys. but sunshine even at the coast as that fog evaporates and then spring

arrives on tuesday keeping it very springlike as we get into tuesday and even wednesday. so tomorrow the temperatures coming up a few degrees. notice those low to mid 70s from hayward to napa, upper 60s in richmond in the mid 60s in san francisco, we cool off a little bit on tuesday. certainly around the bay and at the shoreline inland, maybe a few low 70s. and then the more significant cooling comes in on wednesday as high pressure continues to weaken and fade away. and there are several systems to the north of us that will get cranked up and ready to move on in by the end of the workweek into next weekend. their cold systems, so they'll spread not only rain from north to south, but mountain snow. and we're talking about probably some advisories in the sierra nevada as we get into next weekend. so hopefully enjoying the dry seasonal weather for this time of year. and because this all switches as we get towards probably friday, could even see a few showers into early thursday. this takes us through saturday night where you
