to gather in san francisco's west portal neighborhood for a vigil to remember the three family members killed over the weekend in a deadly crash. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. this horrific crash happened just after noon on saturday. >> friends of the victims say the family was waiting at the bus stop at yulo street and lenox way, heading to the zoo when an suv slammed into the bus shelter. now the driver of that suv is in custody. >> abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is at the scene and is live with the very latest on this cornell. >> yeah. dan and ama, that vigil just getting underway here at the corner of lenox and yulo. and as you can see, hundreds of people are showing up here to pay their respects to the family. killed the couple's baby is still in the hospital with life threatening injuries. today, this neighborhood was rocked once again by the news that the driver of the suv involved in this crash has been arrested.

>> obviously, this story touches my heart. i have a two year old. i have an older child. >> every hour people are leaving flowers at this small memorial where three family members, including a toddler, died saturday. the couple's baby was the only survivor. police say the driver of an suv crashed into the muni bus shelter where the family was sitting doing my laundry and i heard a very loud crash. >> and then i looked out the window and there's this mangled car. >> joanna dimayuga raced to help. >> i saw a lady who was some, you know, she was being attended to as well. and, gave her a towel. she had a bloody mouth, and i later found out that she was the driver. police say 78 year-old mary fong law was arrested on three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter, including a charge of reckless driving. >> investigators say law was speeding, driving the wrong way on yulo street, traveling east in the westbound lane before slamming into the bus stop in front of the west portal library. here's what that bus shelter looked like before the

crash and after. >> i often see mary gardening in front of her house. >> someone fitzner is mary fong law's neighbor. she can't believe the news. >> she's always been a very nice , calm woman. she always says hello. we've interacted many times together. i think she often watches her grandchild. this is just very unexpected. i'm so sorry. >> friends of the couple killed say they were full of life. they say on saturday, the family was headed to the zoo and decided to take the bus. >> she's portuguese, and then he's brazilian. a lot of things that we knew about, like love, was then, you know, like they were like amazing couple, like they had, like, no issues with anything. they were just like, love, love, love and taking care of their, their kids, you know, like then they were like going to the zoo, you know, like to have a nice day at the park. >> now the driver is in police custody in the hospital. she is recovering from her injuries. district attorney brooke jenkins

releasing a statement a short time ago saying that i asked for patience from the public as investigators continue to gather more information so that my office can make appropriate charging decisions. the extent and nature of any criminal liability depend on many factors. she went on to say that toxicology reports can take up to 30 days, and the da's office also wants to investigate the operating system of that mercedes suv suv to make sure that there was no mechanical failure. we will have more on this very somber vigil here coming up tonight at 6:00. for now, i'm cornell bernard reporting live. abc seven news. >> just such a terrible, terrible tragedy. cornell, thanks very much. new details tonight about the first homicide of the year in berkeley. police have identified the suspect as a 23 year old woman and say the victim was her mother. they say the woman stabbed her 60 year old mother to death yesterday afternoon at an apartment complex on university avenue, a couple blocks away from san

pablo avenue. investigators have not released their names at this point. the 23 year old has been charged with murder and booked into the santa rita jail in oakland. >> police now say the suspect in a liquor store clerks killing is a 13 year old boy. investigators told our partners at the bay area news group they think the child committed another armed robbery less than an hour after the shooting. the boy is charged with murder and attempted robbery, accused of killing majid al-hasani at his family's store in west oakland back in january. police believe the child and another person pointed a gun at al-hasani. they say that when the clerk tried to grab the gun, the boy pulled the trigger, killing the father of four, the bay area news group reports the child is oakland's youngest murder suspect in recent memory, and is also a suspect in two more robberies. >> supporters of alameda county district attorney pamela price are accusing the recall campaign of fraud. they say there were issues in the signature gathering process, and they're asking the u.s. justice department to step in. abc seven

news reporter ryan curry was in oakland today speaking with price's supporters and the recall campaign as the alameda county registrar's office works to verify every signature for the recall effort. >> advocates for pamela price are accusing the recall of being undemocratic. they say the signature gathering process was fraudulent. we have extensive evidence that we've collected from our volunteers, from folks who are just living citizens, people who live in alameda county, who have come to us and made these claims at an event near oakland city hall monday morning, they showed evidence they gathered showing collection tables with no workers. they say someone could have tampered with the signatures. they also say some of the petitioners came from out of the county, which is against the county charter. >> this is even more important today because as every single signature is now under increased scrutiny, leaders of the recall effort submitted over 120,000 signatures for recall petition. >> they need just over 73,000 to force a special election. last week, the county registrar said

they will have to manually count the signatures. the recall leaders were not available for an interview, but said in a statement a broad coalition of alameda county residents, business owners, victims, victims families and concerned citizens of our community have come together to keep our community safe. we are waiting. signature validation from the alameda county registrar of voters and are confident the process will confirm the results of the recall. the protect the wind campaign is not planning on filing a lawsuit against the recall, but they already sent a letter to attorney general rob bonta asking him to investigate. >> today is march 18th. we've not heard anything from attorney general rob bonta or his office. >> they are now planning on sending a letter to the united states department of justice. they say the recall effort is an attack on efforts to change the criminal justice system. >> this is a broken system. you know, we don't expect that da price will be able to fix it in one year, but we also believe that honoring the majority vote is really critical. >> the protect the win campaign estimates a recall election

could cost taxpayers around $10 million. in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> san quentin's death row may disappear by the end of the summer. today the state unveiled plans to transfer the remaining 457 men on death row to other state prisons in the coming months. it's part of an effort by governor newsom to turn san quentin state prison into a rehabilitation and job training center. death row inmates sent to other prisons will be housed with the general population, but their sentences will not be modified. >> two weeks after the march primary, the race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo is just about as tight as it possibly could get. former san jose mayor sam liccardo leads the pack with 21% of the vote. the real nail biter here is to determine his rival in november. right now, only 20 votes separate santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and state assembly member evan lowe. the state has 25 days to certify the results. >> cases of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues

were already on the rise in. children and teenagers have been increasing for years, and the challenges covid 19 created for students has only made things worse. but as abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains, much needed support for students is coming to santa clara county. >> our schools in santa clara county are experiencing a mental health crisis and need our help, which is why i'm immensely proud today to share with our education partners that help is on the way. >> the fight against a covid crisis took a major step forward in santa clara county, 40 schools in the south bay will split $13.2 million from a grant program to expand youth mental health wellness centers. >> we see that when we don't intervene early and we don't work on prevention methods, we see children and youth falling further along the lines of mental illness, of substance use , disorders of all kinds of physical and emotional health challenges. >> wellness centers address these challenges by offering students a safe place to relax,

receive counseling, and get referrals to other services. 19 schools in the county have already seen great success from these centers, including monroe middle school. you know, students often feel like school is just about academics and nothing else. >> and our wellness center really has brought that commitment to the whole child and building their wellness, as well as their academic growth. >> monroe principal ruth stephens randall has been a school administrator for 13 years. she sees the difference every time a student asks for support or advocates for a friend. expanding the wellness centers is a victory for students countywide. in her eyes , i now feel as if we are matching the resources to the need. >> we've always known it's been a need and, you know, in education we kind of have a can do spirit. so we're going to make it work no matter what. and it's been really, really awesome to see these other agencies collaborate with schools to get the resources to match the need. >> the grant will fund upgrades to existing wellness centers and create 28 new locations at south bay schools and supervisor susan ellenberg doesn't want it to stop there.

this 11 month old german shepherd named marley. police believe two men in their 20s shot this dog in the head. it happened back in january near anne darling drive and mckee road. the bullet shattered the dog's skull and a toe in his right paw. police say they take this case as seriously as violence against a person that wasn't just something to scare off a dog, they were really trying to end a life and i think it's safe to say that we consider all lives equal. >> our furry friends. we want justice for them, too. >> marley is recuperating pretty well. you'll be glad to know she's in foster care. if you know who may have shot marley, please contact the san jose police department in san francisco today. >> a former high ranking official was sentenced to four years in prison in an ongoing fbi corruption probe at city hall. former public utilities commission chief harland kelly left federal court after sentencing last year. kelly was found guilty of fraud. prosecutors said he accepted bribes and misrepresented debts

in a loan application. kelly oversaw an annual budget of $1 billion. the judge also sentenced kelly to three years supervised release and community service. kelly apologized for his actions. >> a fire damaged the historic century old gym at amador valley high school in pleasanton. firefighters were called to the school around 8:00 last night. they called a second alarm and had more than 40 firefighters working to contain the fire. there were no injuries, thank goodness. a district spokesperson says the fire is not affecting classes, but the gym is of course, being blocked off. it's primarily used for practices with the school's sports teams, multiple agencies in oakland have partnered to amplify efforts to stop crime from driving away key businesses along its hegenberger road corridor. >> businesses in the area, such as in-n-out burger and denny's have announced they're closing because of increased crime. now, city officials plan to negotiate with the businesses to reconsider their decisions. hegenberger is the gateway to and from oakland international

priority. abc news reporter jacqueline lee has the story. >> the ceo of united airlines, scott kirby, issuing a letter earlier today after the airline had nine incidents in the last two weeks, writing unfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety while they are all unrelated. i want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus. on friday, after a plane landed in medford, oregon, it was discovered a panel on the underside of the fuselage was missing. earlier this month, flames seen coming from an engine forcing a plane to return to houston and san francisco. a plane lost a wheel on takeoff and days later there was a hydraulic leak on a flight heading to san francisco. and in houston, a united boeing 737 max slid off the runway, kirby saying united will review each case and make changes as needed. he says they were already planning to give an extra day of in-person training for pilots and change the training curriculum for new hire

bay area radio hall of fame. she's been with the giants, so many countless memories for fans over the years. she was one of major league baseball's first black female announcers. she plans to continue her work in the community, and the giants posted this on social media, thanking her for 24 years. the booth will be renamed at oracle park in her honor. that's a great move, with a ceremony taking place during a future home game. now, growing up, a giants fan in fresno now part of my childhood going to games throughout the years. this is a photo of me from college in 2007. went to boston to see the giants and red sox. i know it's weird. i'm like, i got to go see renel and she couldn't have been any nicer. and over the years working with her, i've had many opportunities to chat with her, get to know her, and i got to share that photo with her. so cool. in a statement today, renel said, it's been an honor of a lifetime to be on the mic and in the giants committee for 24 years. no word yet on who's gonna take over that role. and like i mentioned, the home opener is friday, april 5th, and they play some preseason games here. i guess it's just next week. baseball coming up real fast. so it's a great shot of
