a suspect is under arrest. and those who know her say they are stunned. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us tonight. police say they've arrested a 78 year-old woman. she's facing three counts of felony vehicular manslaughter, including a charge of reckless driving. >> investigators say the driver was speeding and driving the wrong way down yolo street in the west portal neighborhood on saturday when she crashed into a bus stop. the only surviving member of that family is a baby who's hospitalized with life threatening injuries. hundreds of people are on hand for a vigil being held for three right now for the victims. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone. is there live j.r. >> dan i'm a hundreds of people are paying their respects to that family and this west portal neighborhood of san francisco. and you can see that directly behind me. they have even closed this street off. this is hit the community hard. hugs and tears could be seen as this vigil got underway. three of four family

members died in this area. their baby is still in the hospital. even those who didn't know the family were broken up about what had happened. the police chief left flowers and the mayor of san francisco is in attendance as well. i talked with one woman who said she lives on the other side of san francisco, but had to come and show her support. >> just let the family know that there are people who saw their story and who want them to know that we are thinking about them and i send my condolences and my prayers and back out here you can see one of the muni rails making its way through this area. >> uh. this is a very busy area. even when we drove into this area, there were a lot of people waiting at that bus stop where this accident happened. on saturday. we saw pictures of the family members who were killed during this crash for the first time a little while ago, and it certainly breaks your heart.

i've talked with witnesses who were out here on saturday, and they said that scene was unlike anything that you would ever want to see, describing just how gruesome it was reporting live in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc seven news. just horrible. >> all right, j.r, thank you. the driver police say slammed her suv into the bus stop remains in custody this evening. she's identified as 78 year-old mary fong law. police arrested her on three counts of vehicular manslaughter. reckless driving and driving the wrong way. a neighbor of fong law says she is shocked by what happened. >> always been a very nice, calm woman. she always says hello. we've interacted many times together. i think she often watches her grandchild. this is just very unexpected and i'm so sorry. >> fong law was also cited for speeding. the district attorney says she is waiting to get more information before making a charging decision. the toxicology report could take 30 days to be completed. >> happening now. an overturned

trailer is causing a traffic mess on southbound interstate 280 at sand hill road in menlo park. sky seven was over the scene just a short time ago to get you these pictures. a trailer attached to a pickup truck spilled its load, scattering wood debris across several lanes. as you can see, the chp tells us there is just one lane open for traffic to get past all that debris. right now, traffic is also slow in the eastbound direction of the san mateo bridge. that's where three vehicles crashed just after 4:00 during heavy commute traffic. the chp says two eastbound lanes are currently blocked and there is a big backup. as you can imagine, this time of day. no word on any injuries. >> oakland leaders announced a new collaboration today to address crime along a stretch of road near oaklandnternational airport. we're talking about the ea oakland. crime there has driven several businesses away. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkly has more on their new effort to stop the exodus. >> the hegenberger corridor from the coliseum to oakland airport

is a key gateway to oakland, but it's recently been plagued by increasing crime. this is the introduction of oakland to many people who are landing here at the oakland airport. >> more than 10 million passengers transit through the airport each and every year. >> the airport is an economic engine for the region, generating 61,000 good paying local jobs with $1.6 billion in economic impact. >> so now the race is on to crackdown on crime in this crucial corner of oakland, after major businesses from in-n-out burger to denny's announced they're closing down because of violent crime. >> i think that east oakland in general has seen an influx of crime, but also we have experienced recent decreases specific to the hegenberger corridor. >> oakland city council member trevor reid said she's in direct communication with businesses like in-n-out burger to convince them to reconsider their decision to leave chp, which has been collaborating with the city

and county with surges of patrols, says they'll continue to put the pressure on criminals. >> future surges will consist of 40 to 65 officers in addition to the 72 that are currently assigned to the oakland office. >> is this too little, too late? you lost in and out burger and other businesses along this corridor. how do you make up for that? you know, absolutely not. >> it's not a little to too little too late. i wish that there were more investments in the previous years so that we can, you know, kind of subside with the symptoms of what we're seeing. >> more is also being communicated to tourists who fly in. >> so there'll be a qr code that says town safety tips. you'll see it at every hotel in oakland. it's already there at the front desk and then you also see this coming to the rental cars here shortly. >> so when a visitor scans the code, what does it suggest? traveling in groups, not leaving items unattended in a lobby, a restaurant, or the back of a vehicle? and also to park only in secured garages? oakland is hopeful all of these measures and the collaboration between

local agencies in the state, will add up to improved safety along hegenberger in oakland. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news about a mile and a half from the spot where oakland leaders celebrated cutting down on crime. >> police told neighbors to stay away while they looked for a person with a rifle. san leandro police say they got a call about a person walking around with a gun on doolittle drive near davis street, around 1130. officers say the person had a realistic replica of a rifle, not a real weapon. >> supporters of alameda county district attorney pamela price are accusing the recall campaign of fraud. they say there were issues in the signature gathering process, and they're asking now the u.s. justice department to step in. abc seven news reporter ryan curry was in oakland today speaking with price's supporters and the recall campaign, as the alameda county registrar's office works to verify every signature for the recall effort. >> advocates for pamela price are accusing the recall of being undemocratic. they say the

signature gathering process was fraudulent. >> we have extensive evidence that we've collected from our volunteers from folks who are just living citizens, people who live in alameda county who've come to us and made these claims at an event near oakland city hall monday morning, they showed evidence they gathered showing collection tables with no workers. >> they say someone could have tampered with the signatures. they also say some of the petitioners came from out of the county, which is against the county charter. this is even more important today because every single signature is now under increased scrutiny by leaders of the recall effort submitted over 120,000 signatures for recall petition. they need just over 73,000 to force a special election. last week, the county registrar said they will have to manually count the signatures. the recall leaders were not available for an interview, but said in a statement a broad coalition of alameda county residents, business owners, victims, victims families and concerned citizens of our community have come together to keep our

community safe. we are waiting. signature validation from the alameda county registrar of voters, and are confident the process will confirm the results of the recall. the protect the wind campaign is not planning on filing a lawsuit against the recall, but they already sent a letter to attorney general rob bonta asking him to investigate. >> today is may march 18th. we've not heard anything from attorney general rob bonta or his office. >> they are now planning on sending a letter to the united states department of justice. they say the recall effort is an attack on efforts to change the criminal justice system. >> this is a broken system. you know, we don't expect that da price will be able to fix it in one year, but we also believe that honoring the majority vote is really critical. >> the protect the wind campaign estimates a recall election could cost taxpayers around $10 million in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> violence inside a martinez courtroom today as a defense attorney was stabbed in the neck by the man he was representing the district attorney's office tells abc seven news. the

suspect broke free from his restraints, grabbed his lawyer's pen and stabbed the defense attorney. a sheriff's deputy was able to tackle romello randall and restrain him. randall is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend. the da says the trial will continue tomorrow. for his part, randall's attorney tells the bay area news group it was, quote, no big deal and says he will be back in court tomorrow representing the same man. >> another former san francisco official has been sentenced to federal prison as part of an fbi investigation into corruption at city hall today. former public utilities commission chief harlan kelly was sentenced to four years in prison last year, kelly was found guilty of fraud, prosecutors said. he accepted bribes and misrepresented death debts in a loan application. kelly oversaw an annual budget of $1 billion. the judge also sentenced kelly to three years of supervised release and community service. kelly apologized for his actions. >> san francisco giants fans are going through a wide range of

emotions tonight, following the big news that longtime public address announcer renel brooks-moon won't be back this season. >> leading off for san francisco center fielder number seven marv in vietnam. >> brooks-moon began working as the in-stadium voice of the giants when the team moved from candlestick into what is now oracle park. that was back in 2000, we're told her contract expired in december and that she and the giants could not agree on an extension. brooks-moon was the first female pa announcer during a world series that was back in 2002, and fans are sharing their feelings about renel on our social media pages. some call her a bay area legend and an icon. a lot of fans remember her from her kmgl days, and many are saying giants name games will not be quite the same without her. she's >> well, she's going to be okay.

are backing san francisco mayor london breed's call for the

release of surveillance video in last july's death of a 63 year old chinese immigrant. the woman died after being pushed to the ground in the bayview district. abc7 news reporter suzanne fawn has more on the investigation. >> community is also in pain right now, especially the seniors. >> rex tamburro works with asian seniors through his nonprofit group called apc in bayview. his group has dealt with attacks against elderly in the past. >> i got involved some 20 years ago, when a elderly asian man was thrown off the platform of a muni platform last july. >> san francisco police say a 63 year old woman, yang fang wu, was shoved to the ground in the bayview area by another woman. officers didn't know who that other woman was, who later died from her injuries, and police considered the death to be an accident. police say they recently reopened that case because of new evidence, but they won't say what that evidence is. just last week, police arrested 43 year old thea hopkins in connection with an

assault on a 71 year old chinese woman in bayview. the incident happened by the gilman playground. the district attorney's office says hopkins is charged with assault and elder abuse for that march 4th incident. community members believe hopkins may be connected to last july's incident because of some similarities between the two attacks, but police won't say if that's indeed the case. on sunday, mayor london breed on facebook called for the police chief to release surveillance video from last july's incident. breed posted quote, i believe in transparency and stand with the aapi community for justice for all victims and survivors of hate incidents. as soon as possible. i want the video released, the chief responded on its posting. the sfpd will release the video in this as mayor breed requested after the investigation is complete and we've determined it will not interfere with the investigation or potential prosecution. >> it's frustrating because the asian community has been living, you know, with, fear, this type of fear, for way too long. i

also understand that the police has to do and has to conduct a fair investigation in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> san jose police are hoping a $1,000 reward will lead them to two men suspected of shooting a dog in the head. the dog is this 11 month old german shepherd named marley. police believe two men in their 20s shot the dog back in january. it happened in the area of ann darling drive and mckee road. the bullet shattered the dog's skull and a toe in his right paw. police say they take this case just as seriously as any other violence against a person. >> that wasn't just something to scare off a dog. they were really trying to end a life. and i think it's safe to say that we consider all lives equal. our furry friends, we want justice for them, too. >> marley is recuperating, actually. well we're glad to say she's in foster care now. and if you know who may have shot marley, contact the san jose police department.

>> south bay congressman ro khanna has unveiled a bill to help local businesses owned by their own workers. khanna made the announcement at a slice of new york in san jose six years ago. then owner kirk vartan turned his pizzeria into a co-op, meaning every worker owns an equal part of the business. khanna's bill would make it easier to convert a regular business into a co-op, and for them to get business loans. >> the folks who are putting the pizzas in the box and are making the pizzas, and who are cleaning up, we're creating all the value they should get a part of the actual profits. >> supporters of co-op say they are a smart way to keep businesses from closing. when the owner is interested in moving on. >> the campaign for and against proposition one is not over. two weeks after the march primary election. here's the reason. prop one is winning by just 20,000 votes, and there are still 280,000 more votes to be counted today. the no on prop one campaign withdrew its concession. both sides are now concentrating on the vote count

abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has a look at the proposal. >> san jose water serves more than 1 million people across the south bay. bryan berkeley is one of those customers. >> our family's annual water bill in 2014 was just over $1,000. in 2023, even with conservation, that thousand dollar bill had risen and it could rise again soon, with san jose water proposing another rate increase if approved by the california public utilities commission,

health crisis and need our help, which is why i'm immensely proud today to share with our education partners that help is on the way. >> the fight against a covid crisis took a major step forward in santa clara county, 40 schools in the south bay will split $13.2 million from a grant program to expand youth mental health wellness centers. we see that when we don't intervene early and we don't work on prevention methods, we see children and youth falling further along the lines of mental illness, of substance use, disorders of all kinds of physical and emotional health challenges. wellness centers address these challenges by offering students a safe place to relax, receive counseling, and get referrals to other services. 19 schools in the county have already seen great success from these centers, including monroe middle school. >> you know, students often feel like school is just about academics and nothing else. and our wellness center really has brought that commitment to the whole child and building their

wellness as well as their academic growth. >> monroe principal ruth stephens randall has been a school administrator for 13 years. she sees the difference every time a student asks for support or advocates for a friend. expanding the wellness centers is a victory for students countywide. in her eyes, i now feel as if we are matching the resources to the need. >> we've always known it's been a need and, you know, in education we kind of have a can do spirit. so we're going to make it work no matter what. and it's been really, really awesome to see these other agencies collaborate with schools to get the resources to match the need. >> the grant will fund upgrades to existing wellness centers and create 28 new locations at south bay schools. and supervisor susan ellenberg doesn't want it to stop there. >> in fact, i think the goal needs to be nothing short of providing a center at every single school site in santa clara county to destigmatize mental health and make self-care a priority in santa clara county, dustin dawsey abc seven news. >> a fire damaged the historic century old gym at amador valley

failed plans to transfer the remaining 457 men on death row to other state prisons in the coming months. governor newsom wants to turn san quentin state prison into a rehabilitation and job training center. death row inmates sent to other prisons will be housed with the general population, but their sentences will not be modified. >> new trouble for former president trump in his new york civil fraud case today. his lawyers told an appellate court

it's impossible for him to post a bond covering the 454 million judgment against him while he appeals the case, the lawyers say they've approached 30 companies and none will accept his real estate holdings as a guarantee on the bond. trump has until march 25th to come up with the money if he can't. new york state's attorney general's office could begin to seize his assets, tapping again another issue with the united airlines flight at sfo, according to the san francisco chronicle. >> a flight bound for osaka, japan, had to return to the gate today, reportedly because of an engine problem the right engine. the flight was delayed by more than five hours. this is at least the 10th incident involving the airline in just the past two weeks. and as abc news reporter jacqueline lee explains today, united's ceo tried to reassure customers that safety is the airline's number one priority. >> the ceo of united airlines, scott kirby, issuing a letter earlier today after the airline had nine incidents in the last

two weeks, writing unfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety while they are all unrelated. i want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus. on friday, after a plane landed in medford, oregon, it was discovered a panel on the underside of the fuselage was missing. earlier this month, flames seen coming from an engine forcing a plane to return to houston and san francisco. a plane lost a wheel on takeoff and days later there was a hydraulic leak on a flight heading to san francisco. and in houston, a united boeing 737 max slid off the runway, kirby saying united will review each case and make changes as needed. he says they were already planning to give an extra day of in-person training for pilots and change the training curriculum for new hire maintenance technicians. airline safety has been heightened following that incident where a door plug ripped off this alaska airlines boeing 737 max plane in portland in january.

longer fermentation periods and the wild yeast are better on our gut health and our digestion. so we do a lot of overnight fermentation and slow fermentation for that reason. and also just for flavor, we do a little bit of focaccia and we do a lot of seasonal items, seasonal focaccias with different local veggies, etc. on top we make a french baguette, having those daily specials is kind of like it brings people back. babka on thursday, the brioche bun with like a whipped cream filling, saturday cinnamon rolls and sunday scones. sunday is so special because it's the only day they have scones and they have four different kinds of scones. >> change them every week. three sweets and a savory. >> they're delicious and we like to try all of them when we can. yeah, they've got their own brick oven. >> and so everything is they bake every day. >> the wood fired aspect of it, you get like a better surrounding heat. so you get a really good quality crust out of it. it contributes to the flavor . i try to source as locally as

well, an interesting news day for the giants, to say the least. first came the news of the departure of longtime pa announcer renel brooks-moon after both sides couldn't come to a contractor game. now on the field within the past 20 minutes, mlb network reports the giants have agreed to a two year, $62 million deal with former padres left handed ace pitcher blake snell. now, espn's jeff passan reports the deal includes an opt out after this first season. the reigning nl mvp entered the winter hoping for a long terme deal. it's been in talks with the yankees, astros, among others, but no deal. there snell is a two time
