francisco community showing up tonight on the same sidewalk where three family members were killed when a car plows into a bus stop, the driver is facing charges while people here at this vigil, including the city's mayor and chief of police, grieve a terrible and sudden loss. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. it is an emotional story to tell. a 78 year-old woman is under arrest tonight for speeding in her suv through this muni bus stop area in the city's west portal neighborhood on saturday, a father, mother and child are dead. >> an infant is still in the hospital. they were on their way to the zoo when it happened. >> tonight. a crowd of neighbors and city leaders came together for that heartbreaking vigil, and abc seven news reporter j.r. >> stone was there and has the story. >> hugs among community members dealing with heartbreak after the loss of a mother, father and their toddler, all of whom were waiting for the bus at a stop in this area of the sidewalk saturday when they were struck

by a vehicle. the couple's infant is still alive but battling life threatening injuries in a hospital to feel that an entire family has been destroyed. >> in one saturday afternoon that i think is just rocking a lot of people. >> these are the first public pictures showing the family images put up by close friends, as they remember the couple and their toddler at this vigil monday night in san francisco show. hundreds of san franciscans attended. we were there as the police chief left flowers, the mayor was also in attendance. >> just let the family know that there are people who saw their story and who want them to know that we are thinking about them. >> this large memorial has been set up where the initial impact happened, but witnesses tell me that this small memorial has been set up where one of the victims was found. >> it went into this pole over here. the car that's the most it reached. but then somehow he was

all the way over there. >> that woman witnessed the accident saturday. >> and then, boom! this loud boom everyone's in has been talking about. i heard it myself and i'm standing over there, so i lunge forward to the sound and i look and i see a lot of debris. this is the most, graphic and vivid and gruesome thing i've ever seen in my life. >> some neighbors say that whatever the cause may be here, this intersection in the west portal neighborhood is very confusing, and they believe changes need to be made. >> people don't know where to walk, not to walk. you can see the lights are terrible. you people don't know when you can cross the street. and so there's definite confusion. >> yes, close friends of the family tell us that some of the victims loved ones have arrived in san francisco, and others are in route. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> and of course, witnesses will never forget what they saw. police say the 78 year old

female driver was booked on three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. investigators say she was speeding the wrong way before slamming into the bus stop. prosecutors say they're analyzing toxicology reports and the vehicle's operating system before filing former formal charges, but they are pending new developments on a flight incident today. as you look live at the san francisco international airport, tarmac, passengers will arrive in japan tomorrow morning after their flight was delayed by more than five hours. yet another united airlines mishap. they had to return to the gate at sfo today because of a mechanical issue on the plane. united did not have more details to share, but says the maintenance team needed more time to service the aircraft. it's the 10th incident of its kind for united in just the last two weeks. >> well, she is the voice you've heard over the years over the speaker system announcing that barry bonds, buster posey or pablo sandoval are up to bat. she introduces your three time world series champion san francisco giants before every

game. that is, until now. after 24 years, the team announced its parting ways with p.a. announcer renel brooks-moon. she was a trailblazer in many ways, and as abc seven news reporter tim johns tells us, it's getting quite the reaction online. tim. >> yeah, yeah. now, according to that statement released earlier today, brooks-moon and the giants had extensive discussions over a new contract for her. however, they were unable to come to a final agreement and that's left many local giants fans very unhappy with the news. when the giants play their home opener game in just a few weeks time, many things will look the same as last year. but one key thing will be a little different. >> leading off for san francisco center fielder number seven marvin benard, longtime p.a. announcer renel brooks-moon will no longer be on the mic. >> a lot of us grew up with her as the voice of, you know, camille then going to the giants game. so we grew up with her. you know, she it's she's like

family. >> moe modell is a lifelong giants fan who was disappointed monday when he heard that the team and the iconic announcer had parted ways. brooks-moon has served as the voice of the giants for 24 seasons, and has been a face of not just the team, but also san francisco. as a whole. for years, the broadcaster has worked with multiple charities and local organizations around the city. >> she's been a regular volunteer. she always shows glide, love and loves to speak to clients and especially youth. whenever she could. >> francesca delgado jones is with glide. she tells me brooks-moon has worked with them for years, inspiring many with her groundbreaking career. >> she is a wonderful trailblazer for, you know, going into a field that was predominantly male, that was a predominantly male dominated field. she actually broke into that and she brought that same energy to glide and advocating for others who couldn't advocate for themselves. >> on monday night, brooks-moon took to ax to thank both the giants and their loyal fans, saying in part, dearest giants fans, thank you for wrapping me

winter winding down and dan and let's take a look at a live picture right now as we do have gray skies over san francisco from our exploratorium camera visibility is still doing okay. it is down to eight miles in half moon bay, but that's going to change come morning. so here's a look at your planner. fog and clouds in the morning. 40s 50s. clearing inland by noontime and around the bay. sunshine for most areas in the afternoon. we're going upper 50s to mid 70s and then cooler and breezy in the evening. here are the changes that are ahead later this week. our rain chances are going up. i'll be back with the look at the forecast coming up. >> dan okay sandy, thanks a lot. your voice your vote. now it's a very close contest as they count up the votes on california's proposition one. at the moment, it's yes on one by a very small margin, a support of $6 billion in bonds for mental health treatment facilities. it has less than a 20,000 vote lead out of more than 7 million votes cast. governor newsom says if prop one is approved, the plan

would be to add an additional 11,000 beds and the bonds would be paid for out of the general fund. it could help accommodate the homeless population. >> and so you really saw low levels of turnout this spring, and that was dangerous. when you want to put forward an agenda item that maybe needs more disadvantaged and working class people voting, my hunch is that it's going to squeak by, but it's only a hunch, anybody's guess at this moment. >> it's so close. results will be fully certified by april 12th. in the meantime, another close race, the one to replace congresswoman anna eshoo, is about as tight as you can get. former san jose mayor sam liccardo leads the pack with 21% of the vote. he's secured a space or a spot in the november election. the nail biter, though, is to determine his rival. right now, only 12 votes put santa clara county supervisor joe simitian ahead of state assemblyman evan low at abc seven news. >> we care about building a better bay area. that means

pointing out problems, highlighting solutions and celebrating when they work. our first breakthrough tonight, leaders in oakland say they're seeing progress along a troubled corridor, and they're starting a new effort to double down on safety. the rise in crime along hegenberger road in east oakland has driven key businesses away from the area, near the airport and the coliseum. the closure of in and out made national news, and denny's wasn't far behind. a month ago, we told you about a new task force of east bay leaders brainstorming solutions to curb crime and bring businesses back. today, we were there as oakland mayor shengtao announced how it's working. she says car break-ins thefts and robberies are going down in the area. she credited more police officers on the streets, security teams assigned to shopping centers, and a safety ambassador program for businesses. >> we remain persistent and continue to do this work. i know that not only will we have the data to represent the successes we have, but we will have a stronger, a cleaner and safer oakland. >> oakland city council member trevor reid says she's talking

to in-n-out and other businesses , trying to convince them to stay in oakland. >> our next building, a better bay area breakthrough is found in santa clara county, 40 schools are going to get new grant money to develop wellness centers at middle schools and high schools, or enhance the ones that are already in existence. we have seen and heard from plenty of younger kids and teenagers saying these services are of the utmost importance. >> while today is great news, our work is far from done. there are many schools not receiving a wellness center, and i hope that other local governments philanthropic leaders and corporate leaders will take notice and join us all in all, the new grant will serve more than 400,000 students across santa clara county, and our final building, a better bay area breakthrough, takes us to downtown san francisco. >> if you notice a few more people around the area this week, well, we now know why the 2024 game developers conference kicked off today and runs through friday at moscone center . according to the sf business times, it's the fourth largest

happened around six in the morning on january 11th. they found marley around here off anne darling drive and mckee road. the silicon valley crime stoppers program is now offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information on. >> one of the suspects is described as a hispanic adult male in his 20s, thin build and at the time was wearing a yellow weather jacket and jeans. and unfortunately, we don't have a clear description of our second suspect after the shooting, ten month old marley received emergency care at san jose animal care and services, got x rays, found that she was very fortunate, that the bullet had hit any major blood vessels. >> the community heard about marley's story and raised enough funds so she could undergo specialized oral surgery at uc davis. veterinary medicine. you can see that the bullet came in at the top of the snout, exited through the palate. the team at uc davis manufactured splints inside her mouth. she had to have for weeks, she's been in foster, and the foster parents reported that even with the

device in her mouth, she still wanted to play, so they had to take toys away because she didn't remember. >> she had a broken jaw by the end of february, doctor carter said the splints were removed and marley's bones are healing amazingly. looking at her now, other than missing a toe, you would never know what this dog went through. >> the shooting hasn't dampened marley's sweet, well-mannered, and loving spirit. she's expected to make a full recovery. >> as sad as it is to see them come in that way, we get to follow their journey and make them better, and then when we see that they get adopted by this loving family, that's that's the reward. that's what makes us show up every day to keep at it in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> what a sweet dog. yeah attorneys for former president donald trump say it's impossible for him to post bond in his civil fraud case. trump owes $464 million while he appeals a judgment saying he deceived banks and inflated his wealth, his attorneys told a court in new york today, more than 30 insurance companies refused to

help him. many weren't willing to issue such a large bond, and all of them wanted cash as collateral. new york new york attorney general letitia james told abc news last month if trump fails to pay up, she'll seize his properties. >> we are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to new yorkers. >> james can move to do just that a week from today, unless an appellate court sides with the former president. trump's attorneys say freeing up cash by selling his properties is impractical. developing news the princess of wales is back on the cover of tabloids. she was spotted at an england farm shop with prince william over the weekend. it's only the third time princess kate has been seen since late december. this is the sun's cover that you are seeing for tuesday. they were the first to report on kate's weekend outing, saying she looked happy, relaxed and healthy. the princess underwent abdominal surgery in mid-january and officials said then kate was not expected to return to public duties until at least april. but

there has been much confusion and concern over her status, especially after she admitted to editing a family photo released earlier this month. >> all right. on april 22nd, the world will come together to celebrate earth day, and leading up to that, san francisco's aquarium of the bay at pier 39 is hosting a really cool and very special contest. >> yes, it is the first ever earth day poster competition and the deadline to apply is friday. we heard more from the president and ceo of the aquarium on abc seven's getting answers at three. there are three categories for junior, middle, and senior school students. the winning entry will likely fly to the moon, so the winning entry would be on the, firefly lunar module that will be launched on falcon nine through spacex's, some time later this year. >> it will likely go on a microchip and become a permanent part of the moon time capsule. the poster can be digital or hand drawn, and you can submit your entry online. now that's a fun contest. >> that is definitely very cool.

all right. our weather has been fabulous. >> absolutely spectacular. and we're trying to convince sandhya not to fall for. don't mess with here. but we're not having any luck. sandy. oh, come on now. >> i'm just the messenger. don't change it. okay? how about this, dan and anna? we'll just gradually change it. all right, so let me show you some live pictures right now from our tower cameras. fog's back in sfo, emeryville, mount tam, showing you some gray skies tonight. it's a little murky from the golden gate bridge. here's a look at live doppler seven. and we certainly have that fog around, not just near the coast, but it's already pushed in across parts of the bay. your temperatures are in the 50s and the 60s. earlier today it was another mild one, warmer than average for many of our inland areas 75 in san rafael and livermore got up to 74 in fairfield, 72 in san jose. but along the coastline, places like half moon bay, where the fog was last to clear and didn't completely clear only 58 degrees 60 in the city and 68 in oakland. so the reason for the

nice weather, high pressure in control of our weather, and that is going to gradually move on out as a trough develops and pushes into the bay area, which means by friday, unsettled with those temperatures dropping. and this pattern carries over into the weekend. here's a live view from emeryville camera overnight tonight. low clouds and fog tomorrow. spring starts at 806 in the evening and for the end of the week, the seasons changing. the weather is changing. wet and much cooler pattern is coming your way tomorrow morning. watch out for the fog, 40s and 50s. there will certainly be fog lingering even into about 10:00 in the morning, but as we head towards the early afternoon, the sun pops out. most areas will be seeing bright skies and the weather looks fantastic. 50s to 70s. the fog pattern that we're in almost resembles summer, as you know, but we're still in winter. believe it or not. for one more night tonight, 40s and 50s. tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at high temperatures that will

range from the upper 50s at the coast to the mid 70s inland. here's a look at what's ahead as we head towards friday. the system moves in friday afternoon, evening. it will bring us the rain. the rain will continue here in the bay area on saturday, with snow in the sierra nevada and that snow continues on sunday with showers lingering here locally. but the biggest thing you're going to notice is that chill coming back into the picture, where you need to bundle up and grab those umbrellas. as far as rainfall projections, this is early 8607 inch in santa rosa, about 4/10 in san jose. san francisco 6600 notice around kirkwood, 25in of snow and up in northern california. over two inches of rain is expected between friday and sunday. accuweather seven day forecast. spring starts tomorrow evening at 806. it's going to be a little cooler wednesday and thursday. also friday when that level one storm comes in a one for saturday and sunday and keeping it below average for your monday. dan and i
