in danger. they don't make us safer. >> tonight we are talking about the dangers of police pursuits. this comes one day after a high speed chase from el cerrito toward the bay bridge toll plaza ended with a deadly crash. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. that innocent driver who was killed in the head on collision was identified today as 57 year-old. david lee weiner of lafayette. >> authorities say he was heading to work in san francisco's financial district when a pickup truck speeding from police after a store break-in in el cerrito collided with his car. >> although police say they called off the pursuit of the suspect moments before the deadly crash tonight, some people are raising concerns to abc seven news reporter anser hassan about the dangers of these police chases. >> as i was driving, about to get onto the freeway on ramp, a car fleeing the police, skidded out of its lane and hit my car head on.

>> kara keegan says she's lucky to be alive, but still living in pain. she suffered a back injury on december 7th when a police officer chasing a car across the bay bridge and into the east bay crashed into her. based on her experience, keegan believes police chases can put the public in danger. >> there are other safer alternatives to police chases, and i really think that we need to approach police chases with extreme caution. >> citing data from a 2021 report, chp says there were 12,513 police pursuits that year. of those, 20% resulted in a crash, 63% were property damage. only 25% were injury crashes. close to 2% were fatal crashes. that's 52 deaths. >> we are really taking a close look at police actions prior to the collision to determine whether or not they were in department policy or not. >> el cerrito police chief paul

keith says his department is conducting an internal review following a break in at a tobacco shop that led to tuesday's police pursuit onto i-80, when the driver made a u-turn into oncoming traffic. the officer called off the pursuit, but shortly after the suspect struck, hit a car head on, killing the driver. the el cerrito police manual lists 11 factors to consider when initiating a police chase. the police chief says this was a possible felony burglary, and is one of the instances that could warrant a pursuit. >> seeing that tragic outcome of that chase serves as a reminder that, police chases and pursuits are incredibly dangerous. >> kevin benedicto serves on the san francisco police commission. he says there isn't any evidence at this point that el cerrito police did not follow procedure. but he adds that new technologies like drones or gps tracking offer alternatives. >> a recent study by the san francisco department of police accountability showed that the apprehension rates for a pursuit more than doubled when there were some kind of aerial support in the east bay. >> anser hassan abc seven news.

>> the driver, who was arrested for killing three people at a san francisco bus stop, has been released from custody. the 78 year-old driver remains hospitalized, however, her attorneys say she could be released soon. police arrested her on three counts of vehicular manslaughter after her suv ran over a family at a west portal bus stop saturday, killing a couple and their toddler. their baby is still in the hospital in critical condition. san francisco's district attorney says the driver could still face charges, depending on the results of the investigation. >> in the city's inner sunset district today, san francisco officials gathered to celebrate the installation of a new automated license plate reader in total, 400 will be installed around the city. abc seven news reporter tim johns was at today's event and joins us live from the newsroom with more. tim. >> yeah. now these 400 cameras will eventually be installed at 100 different intersections all around san francisco. city leaders say they'll be a helpful tool in increasing public safety and preventing organized crime and retail theft at willow on

the green in san francisco's inner sunset neighborhood, crime has been a constant concern since they opened back in 2022. last year alone, my store, which is only 300 square foot, lost $7,000 in products. the store is one of several in this area that has been recently burglarized. that's one reason why city officials made the nearby ninth and irving intersection in the first place. they installed one of 400 license plate readers that will go up around the city. >> automated license plate readers can play an invaluable role in helping us to track some of the perpetrators of these crimes and hold them accountable. at a news conference wednesday, mayor london breed joined other local leaders to unveil the camera, another step, they say in continuing to reduce crime in san francisco. >> a part of proving that identity is being able to tie them to the scene of the crime, tie them to the getaway vehicle if it's been recorded on a camera. >> however, not everyone is on board with the city installing

the cameras. >> we're not really surprised, given the push that the sfpd and the mayor have had lately in using technology to sort of influence or hopefully reduce crime in the city, unfortunately , we do think this is the wrong approach. >> jason kelly works with the electronic frontier foundation. he says in addition to privacy concerns, his organization questions how effective the license plate readers actually are. >> and we think that alpr cameras in particular, are basically a mass surveillance technology, especially when you install hundreds of them across the city. but for shops like willow on the green, they're hoping the cameras might finally make a difference. >> generally, these cases go unnoticed because there's no way of being able to track hit and run crimes and organized theft without a technology base to be able to find them and track them through the city. >> the city says it will take them about 2 to 3 months to install all 400 of the cameras, so they're hoping to be done around the start of summer. tim

johns abc seven news okay, tim, thanks a lot. >> a san jose man is under arrest after police say he put a hidden camera in a starbucks bathroom. san jose police say the camera was discovered at the end of january at the store on coleman avenue. investigators investigators say it is just one day it recorded more than 90 people in a single day, including children. they tracked down the suspect last week and searched his home. inside. they say they found a large stash of weapons, along with numerous micro cameras. police are asking for the public's help since the investigation is ongoing. >> also in the south bay, tiktok agreed this week to a sublease deal with roku in san jose. our partners at the mercury news report, the office space is located across the street from san jose mineta airport on coleman avenue. it's part of the coleman high line campus, where tiktok parent company bytedance already subleases to commercial buildings. it's unclear when the social media company will move in. >> right now, san jose is seeing one of its busiest and biggest conventions since the pandemic. nvidia's ai conference is

bringing in people from all over the world, which means a lot of revenue, of course, for local businesses. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes talked with city leaders who say events like this are helping the bottom line for both businesses and local households. >> two cupcakes that are nearly too pretty to eat are part of business owner andrea hahn's livelihood. in the years before the pandemic, her frost cupcake factory thrived on corporate orders. >> apple and google and ebay and nvidia. and they wanted these cupcakes at their business. >> but after eight years of steady corporate business, covid changed everything. >> they weren't holding huge meetings or conventions. they couldn't get people to come into the office. and then they had budget cuts. >> though her business manager said they were still waiting for the jump start, that eventually came thanks to the nvidia conference that kicked off monday in downtown san jose. nvidia ordered 1000 cupcakes from hahn, something she's thrilled by, not just for her business, but also for other friends in business. you can just tell the whole city is booming, the hotels are packed,

everything. >> there's people walking with lanyards everywhere. it's pretty cool. >> officials with visit san jose say events like this throughout this year are expected to bring in nearly $80 million in economic impact to the city. that impact not just for businesses. >> the last full year pre-pandemic, each household benefited $1,000 in their tax burden because of the business that we brought to the city, visit san jose said. >> it's working to keep attracting more conventions and events to the area. >> one of our jobs is to reach out to all of those other companies and associations that are affiliated and said, hey, this group had a great experience here. when is the next time you might come west and why not consider san jose? >> the nvidia conference has shaped up to be a big success in more conferences are on the way. local leaders hope that conventions and events will be part of a larger strategy that brings business here to san jose. >> we are working to really bring vibrancy into downtown that is sustainable and that we have with or without special events. and i think we're doing

a really good job. the numbers are inching up. we have a lot of foot traffic in the evenings and on the weekends. >> right now, businesses like frost cupcake factory are grateful for this week. and what's to come. >> we've been waiting for this to come back. so something like this is huge for us in san jose. >> zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> if you fly jetblue, listen up. the carrier is set to end flights between san francisco and los angeles, among other places. the move is a part of a restructuring plan. the airline will end operations in five cities, and 16 other routes will be cut. right now, there's only one daily route between lax and sfo. this comes after a federal judge blocked jetblue's acquisition of spirit airlines earlier this year. >> still ahead here, a warning from the alameda county public health department about a possible measles exposure at a san leandro restaurant, which you need to know about the symptoms. >> plus, an elderly woman and young child, as well as more than 80 dogs rescued from a deplorable conditions in a central valley home. details. when

peter popovich on tuesday, while the 63 year old was making deliveries for a cannabis dispensary. they believe popovich and davis shot each other. both later died at a hospital. police are still looking for the other suspect. >> authorities rescued 86 dogs and two people from deplorable conditions in a central valley home. an anonymous call for a welfare check led police to this home in stanislaus county yesterday. that's where they found five people, 86 dogs in what police called unlivable conditions. a four year old and an elderly woman were removed from the home, and three adults were arrested on abuse and animal cruelty charges. officials tell us the conditions inside were horrific and unsafe for even the rescuers. >> the fire department

determined it was too unhealthy to enter without protective equipment because the oxygen level was only at 16% and the oxygen level was so low because of all of the urine in, in ammonia that was caused by that. and just all of the filth of the waste from the dogs. >> the dogs were taken to the county animal shelter for treatment. many of them are sick and emaciated. shelter officials say they are now well over capacity. >> alameda county public health officials are warning of a possible measles exposure. it happened at the sons of liberty ale house in san leandro, and while they believe the person infected contracted measles from recent international travel, they're hoping to get in touch with anyone who dined at the restaurant on march the 9th. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story >> it's business as usual cleaning up, setting out umbrellas and seating. the lunch rush at sons of liberty alehouse in san leandro. but less than

two weeks ago, on march 9th, the alameda county public health department says someone with the measles was a customer here. they didn't know they had it at the time and may have exposed others. >> patient did not become infected at sons of liberty, and at this time, we are not aware of anyone who developed measles due to this exposure at sons of liberty county, health officials believe the infected person contracted the virus while traveling internationally a few weeks before coming here. >> they wouldn't name the country brad hare, an infectious disease physician with kaiser permanente, says it takes about two weeks for symptoms to show up. >> fever for the malays. people feel tired. people feel run down. maybe your runny nose. people are familiar that measles causes a pretty typical rash that usually shows up a few days into the into the, into the symptoms. >> and he says it wouldn't be contracted by touching a menu, picking up a glass or pulling out a chair because it's an airborne illness. >> it spread when people who are infected either cough or breathe

breach at the medical clinic where kate middleton was treated back in january. abc news reporter maggie rulli has the details. >> more trouble for the royal family. the hospital where princess kate underwent abdominal surgery, reportedly investigating a potential data security breach. the daily mirror reporting that a member of staff at the london clinic tried to access the princess's medical records. kate went into the exclusive london hospital in january for what the palace called planned abdominal surgery and stayed there nearly two weeks. it was also where king charles underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate. the king and the princess of wales were in the hospital at the same time. the uk's data protection watchdog telling abc news this morning it's investigating the information commissioner's office, saying we can confirm we have received a breach report and are assessing the information provided the clinic not commenting on the claims, releasing a statement to the mirror saying all our patients,

no matter their status, deserve total privacy and confidentiality regarding medical information. this breach, coming amid a media storm over the princess's health. the palace had asked for privacy for kate while she recovered, but her absence from public life since christmas had led to some wild conspiracy theories made worse. after a photo the palace released of the princess was shown to have been photoshopped. kate later apologized for the confusion it had caused, and kensington palace told abc news this is a matter for the london clinic. maggie rulli, abc news, london. >> all right, let's turn to our local weather. as we inch a little closer to the weekend and some changes. >> yeah, it's nice outside, but a bit cool today. sandia >> yeah, it has started to cool off. indeed. dan and i want to show you the 24 hour temperature change down a few degrees in most areas. three degrees cooler, livermore, santa rosa, down two degrees in concord. we expected a gradual cooling trend and the onshore breezes certainly helping to drive those temperatures down sfo 20 mile an hour winds, the winds ushering in that cooling. and that

continues tomorrow. take a look at our live cameras. as we had told you yesterday, clouds will be increasing and that's exactly what we're seeing from our tower cameras. the sun is dimming, and part of the reason why is high pressure is getting nudged east by this first system. that's all it's going to do, is continue the cooling and continue to push the high pressure out of the way. that second system will move in our direction and will start to reinforce the cooling, and then we'll eventually have the rain. so on live doppler seven, we do have those clouds increasing from our san jose camera. we are seeing a lovely view right now 60 degrees in oakland, san francisco 57, san jose. you're very mild, 70 degrees, 55 in half moon bay and from our mount tam cam, not only low clouds, but we're seeing those higher clouds filtering the sunshine. 62 in santa rosa, you've got a stiff breeze in petaluma, 55 degrees, upper 60s fairfield, concord, livermore. you're at a mild 70 degrees. and from our walnut creek camera, the clouds are pretty much

stacked up tomorrow. mix of sun and clouds. friday friday is wet, cooler and breezy. and for your weekend weather, showers will continue and it is going to be gusty, but we're not expecting the entire weekend to be a washout. i'll show you that in just a moment. your temperatures first thing in the morning. 40s and 50s. mostly cloudy to cloudy skies tomorrow afternoon. you are looking at a mix of high clouds and sun. still going to be very pleasant in terms of your temperature inland in the low 70s. right along the coast in the low 60s. but we are going to notice cooler weather on friday and that carries us through the weekend. on friday we have a light level one storm coming our way, light to moderate showers, slippery roadways, expecting breezy to gusty winds. so as we time this out for you, 7 a.m. friday, you're just seeing cloud cover. and then here comes the rain. it is light to moderate around 11 a.m, beginning in the north bay. it starts to slide southward and eventually we'll move eastward in the early afternoon. by 4 p.m, we're seeing pockets of moderate rain.

this continues into the evening hours. and then really, the scattered showers are going to continue to carry over into saturday as well. you can see another wave coming right through in the morning and possibility of thunderstorm or two on saturday. as we take you through the rest of saturday. it's wet. sierra is getting snow. continuing into sunday we will still have some unsettled weather, but i think it's the first half of your sunday that's wet. the second half you'll get a chance to hopefully get outside. in terms of rainfall, you're looking at anywhere from 4/10 of an inch to over an inch, almost an inch and a half there by saturday evening. here's a look at the winter storm watch in the sierra. 11 a.m. friday until 5 a.m. sunday. what? yeah, snow is coming to the mountains up to three feet over the peaks. gusts to 45 miles an hour. so clearly we're not quite done with winter, even though it's spring. accuweather seven day forecast filtered sunshine tomorrow. level one friday. saturday. sunday a chance of sprinkles on monday and then another system greets us on wednesday and that's another level one. ama and dan okay.
