>> it's the world's largest conference for game industry professionals. and it's happening this week in san francisco's moscone center. >> gdc is it's the premium conference in video games, and it's an amazing collection of people, the game developers conference, or gdc for short, is attracting video game developers and executives like michael shapiro and vanessa lane, who are here to launch their product. >> we work with leading psychologists to create video games that are good for your mental health, without sacrificing any of the fun. >> there's something so special about being in person at gdc in san francisco, and we honestly just love the city, and san francisco loves them. >> back. and more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the game developers conference this week. a huge boost to the economy in this area. according to san francisco travel, gdc will generate over $40 million in economic impact for the city. we noticed a line outside of the peruvian restaurant mercado right across from the conference. >> so we're happy. you know, i

want everyone to try my food. you know, this is why i am i am cook for all the guests coming today. more busy day. we have today. we have many reservations, many parties, a sight of relief. >> as many businesses in the area are still recovering from the negative impacts of apec, which closed multiple streets and blocked off for traffic and businesses. >> we probably lost $30,000 that week, you know. and then there was the week of setup and the take down. so, definitely night and day. >> the brickhouse bar and grill is seeing the biggest economic boost in months this week. >> we are surrounded by offices that still aren't full yet. so these these events at moscone center are just, you know, they can almost make and break us at this point in time. so we're so grateful. it's been fantastic so far. lots of big reservations. we've got some parties. >> the president of the summer business association is hoping san francisco advocates for more conferences like this one. >> please have more of these conventions. work with everybody

it can to bring more of them here to the city in san francisco. >> luz pena, abc seven news. >> the moscone center hosted almost three dozen conventions last year. you heard louis mentioned apec. that was the big one, a week long event in november. and san francisco hosted world leaders in 30,000 guests for discussions of international economic importance. restaurants lost business because strict security measures kept visitors away, but hotels did well. the yerba buena community benefit district says in total, 34 conventions last year helped support 55,000 tourism jobs and brought in $255 million to the neighborhood. >> san jose is seeing one of its biggest conventions since the pandemic. nvidia's ai conference is bringing in people from all over the world, which means a lot of revenue, of course, for local businesses, abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on how leaders believe events like this are helping. the bottom line for both businesses and households. >> cupcakes that are nearly too pretty to eat are part of business. owner andrea hahn's

livelihood. in the years before the pandemic, her frost cupcake factory thrived on corporate orders. >> apple and google and ebay and nvidia. and they wanted these cupcakes at their business. >> but after eight years of steady corporate business, covid changed everything. >> they weren't holding huge meetings or conventions. they couldn't get people to come into the office. and then they had budget cuts. >> though her business manager said they were still waiting for the jumpstart that eventually came thanks to the nvidia conference that kicked off monday in downtown san jose. nvidia ordered 1000 cupcakes from hahn, something she's thrilled by. not just for her business, but also for other friends in business. you can just tell the whole city is booming, the hotels are packed, everything. >> there's people walking with lanyards everywhere. it's pretty cool. >> officials with visit san jose say events like this throughout this year are expected to bring in nearly $80 million in economic impact to the city that impact not just for businesses. >> the last full year pre-pandemic, each household benefited $1,000 in their tax burden because of the business

that we brought to the city. visit san jose said. >> it's working to keep attracting more conventions and events to the area. >> one of our jobs is to reach out to all of those other companies and associations that are affiliated and said, hey, this group had a great experience here. when is the next time you might come west? and why not consider san jose? >> the nvidia conference has shaped up to be a big success in more conferences are on the way. local leaders hope that conventions and events will be part of a larger strategy that brings business here to san jose . >> we are working to really bring vibrancy into downtown that is sustainable and that we have, with or without special events, and i think we're doing a really good job. the numbers are inching up, we have a lot of foot traffic in the evenings and on the weekends. >> right now, businesses like frost cupcake factory are grateful for this week and what's to come. >> we've been waiting for this to come back so something like this is huge for us in san jose. >> zach fuentes abc seven news and the next generation of tech needs the next generation of

people. >> of course, that's where the curiosity cube comes into play. see what san jose middle school students learn today that's still ahead right here on abc seven news at six developing news. >> we're learning the driver involved in a crash over the weekend that claimed the lives of three family members is no longer in police custody. a mother, father and a toddler died while they were waiting at a bus stop in san francisco on west portal avenue saturday, when a speeding car ran into them. another child, an infant, survived but is critically injured. today we're hearing from the drivers attorney and the san francisco district attorney about potential criminal charges. here's abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn. this is just an unspeakable tragedy. >> that is a reality. >> sam geller represents the 78 year old woman who was behind the wheel of this mercedes suv saturday when it crashed into a bus shelter near the west portal station. >> this is a very difficult time for her as well, you know, this is a tragedy that she has to find a way to live with and navigate. >> diego cardoso de oliveira and his wife matilda ramos pinto,

were waiting at the bus stop, along with their two children. the crash killed the couple and their toddler. it severely hurt their infant strangers, and community members who stopped by the crash site are struggling to make sense of what happened. >> it's incredibly sad. it really, i think, shows how, how something like this could happen to any of us. >> oh, it's sad. it's a tragedy. but, you know, you don't know what happened with the driver. >> the driver remains in the hospital, but will be released in the near future. according to her attorney. today, abc seven news asked him why she's no longer in police custody. >> you know, there are times unfort you know, that accidents and tragedies happen and there wasn't a crime committed initially. >> police arrested the woman on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving, but no charges have been formally filed. >> i think she's appreciative, and i'm appreciative of the fact that the da's office is, you know, conducting an

investigation to determine whether or not there are any elements that exist in this, in this incident that would lead to charges. >> did she have a medical emergency? >> i'm not aware. and it's not i'm not not that i'm a i'm not aware. i'm not privy to that kind of information yet. >> today, abc seven news asked district attorney brooke jenkins why she didn't charge the driver. >> this is not in any way absolving anyone of criminal behavior, but this is the type of investigation that just takes a little bit longer than that 48 hour period. >> prosecutors say they're still analyzing toxicology reports and the vehicle's operating system in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> and we have new details on the attempted robbery of a delivery driver in pleasant hill that turned into a deadly shootout. a man suspected of trying to rob the driver has died. he's identified as 21 year-old trayvon davis. police say davis approached 63 year-old peter popovich, who had been making deliveries at cannabis dispensaries. popovich pulled out a gun and the two exchanged gunfire, each getting hit

several times. popovich, who had a concealed weapons permit, later died at the hospital. local authorities are looking for a second suspect. the questions are being raised tonight about the dangers of police pursuits. now this comes one day after a driver died in a head on collision on westbound 580 in oakland. he was identified today as 57 year-old david lee weiner from lafayette. authorities say he was heading to work in san francisco when a pickup truck trying to get away from police collided with his car. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> as i was driving, about to get onto the freeway on ramp, a car fleeing the police, skidded out of its lane and hit my car head on. >> kara keegan says she's lucky to be alive, but still living in pain. she suffered a back injury on december 7th when a police officer chasing a car across the bay bridge and into the east bay crashed into her. based on her experience, keegan believes

police chases can put the public in danger. >> there are other safer alternatives to police chases, and i really think that we need to approach police chases with extreme caution. >> citing data from a 2021 report, chp says there were 12,513 police pursuits that year. of those, 20% resulted in a crash, 63% were property damage. only 25% were injury crashes close to 2% were fatal crashes. that's 52 deaths. >> we are really taking a close look at the police actions prior to the collision to determine whether or not they were in department policy or not. >> el cerrito police chief paul keith says his department is conducting an internal review following a break in at a tobacco shop that led to tuesday's police pursuit onto i-80. when the driver made a u-turn into oncoming traffic, the officer called off the pursuit. but shortly after the suspect struck, hit a car head

on, killing the driver. the el cerrito police manual lists 11 factors to consider when initiating a police chase. the police chief says this was a possible felony burglary, and is one of the instances that could warrant a pursuit. >> seeing that tragic outcome of that, chase serves as a reminder that, police chases and pursuits are incredibly dangerous. >> kevin benedicto serves on the san francisco police commission. he says there isn't any evidence at this point that el cerrito police did not follow procedure. but he adds that new technologies like drones or gps tracking offer alternatives. >> a recent study by the san francisco department of police accountability showed that the apprehension rates for a pursuit more than doubled when there was some kind of aerial support in the east bay. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> coming up next, the 90th birthday for former san francisco mayor willie brown, a long life with lessons and a rich legacy. >> i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. get ready to make the switch from sunshine to spring showers. i'll have the timeline

jose mayor sam liccardo in november's general election, and the only statewide proposition on the primary ballot has officially passed. prop one is a $6.4 billion bond to pay for mental health services and to build supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness. it passed with 50.2% of the vote. >> happening today, it is willie brown's birthday. the former san francisco mayor is turning 90. happy birthday. >> he's staying in san francisco to celebrate hosting a gala to raise money for one of his dearest causes. >> abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez spoke with the former mayor about turning 90 and his legacy. right. >> although he has been to paris, remember for his 75th birthday, big deal. he knows how to party now. this is a side of willie brown that i had not seen last week. we were there when he sat down for about an hour with these san francisco state university students to talk about the importance of working in city government and why representation matters. >> i understand that in all former san francisco mayor

willie brown has never stopped being an inside order at city hall. >> let's go home. back home. >> hey. >> he served as mayor from 1996 to 2004. do you like coming back to your old home? >> yeah. not really. >> as mayor, he was often characterized as being overly frank. whose idea was this? and still today, somewhat nonchalant. how about you? do you like it? what? the statue? >> yeah. it's all right. yeah. >> brown was born in mineola, texas, a segregated town where the birth of many black people went unrecorded. it wasn't until his college days at san francisco state that he finally obtained a birth certificate. as he attempted to make inroads in his career, brown quickly discovered a city dominated by an old boys network, and it was almost like a club, almost like a fraternity.

>> he not available to black people in most cases. >> yet despite those challenges, his political trajectory consisted of many firsts. he was among the first black state assembly members, the first black speaker of the assembly, and the first african american mayor of san francisco. >> local government is where things actually happen. >> in 2008, he established the willie l brown junior fellowship program with the purpose of placing students from san francisco state who otherwise wouldn't have a chance to work in city government. >> the willie brown fellowship really serves as like this tool that allows students to be in these agencies and have their voices heard and really impact policies that are influencing them and their families and their friends and folks that look like them to bring people in who embodied the diversity of the city. >> 12 undergraduate students are selected among many applicants working in city government 16 hours a week for an entire

semester. each student receives a stipend of $3,000. the goal for many is to get a permanent job with the city once they graduate. >> we have students who maybe were fellows in 2018. in 2008 and 2021 who are now working in city agencies, alondra esquivel garcia was a willie brown fellow who is now the director of the san francisco youth commission. >> i basically help advise 17 youth from across the city to advise the mayor and the board of supervisors on anything youth related. nowadays, it's housing, homelessness, transportation, city planning, food insecurity, you name it. >> jessica campos was also a prior fellow and she now works full time for the human rights commission. >> the willie brown fellowship, gave me an opportunity to know people. >> happy birthday to you. happy birthday, birthday to you. >> how do you want these kids to

patel is tracking that for us. sandra. >> yeah. first comes the clouds and the cooler weather, and then comes the rain. dan and omar, let's take a look at that. changing forecast. a beautiful view from the sierra statewide snow pack 101% of average. you can see plenty of snow on the ground. and guess what? there's more coming. yeah, it's spring, but winter is not over. we have a winter storm watch 11 a.m. friday until 5 a.m. sunday, 1 to 2ft above 5000ft, up to three feet for the peaks. with those gusty winds, travel could be difficult, so keep that in mind if you do have plans. high pressure is losing the battle. now it's going to start to continue to shift off to the east like it did today. we do have some isolated thunderstorms over the sierra right now, one system after another knocking down the ridge, which is why we've started to see the cloud cover increasing. as you will notice on live doppler seven. and those temperatures decreasing down a few degrees for most areas. four degrees cooler in novato compared to yesterday. at this time, down three degrees in livermore. certainly the wind gusts playing a role. it's an onshore breeze gusting there. 31 at oakland

70s showing up your morning temperatures in the 40s and the 50s as we head out the door, and in the afternoon we'll call it filtered sunshine with high temperatures in the low 60s to low 70s. not a whole lot of change from today. but as we head into friday, you will notice that cooler weather saturday, it's going to feel like winter. most of you in the 50s and 60s. same thing on sunday with the wind coming up. level one system moves in friday. light to moderate showers, slippery roads, breezy to gusty. timing it out for you friday morning at 11 a.m. you see those showers coming in 2:00? crossing the central bay by 4 p.m. you're seeing it in the east bay, the south bay, and the evening light to moderate rain continuing. and this pattern will carry over into saturday. you will notice not just the morning hours, but the afternoon as well. we'll have a slight possibility of thunderstorms on saturday as well. in the mountains. this is going to translate into snow sunday. we still have the lingering showers to start off the day, but i don't think the whole day is going to be wet, so

big cheers from investors today as the stock market saw a triple play. all three major indices closed at record highs. the dow was up more than 400 points. the nasdaq climbed 202 points and the s&p 500 gained 46 points. the markets jumped after the fed chair said he's still planning to lower interest rates three times this year. some investors had been worried about that because of ongoing inflation, but the fed chair says high consumer spending is keeping the economy healthy. >> new rules aim to cut more than 7 billion tons of global warming carbon emissions from cars over the next three decades. the environmental protection agency made the big announcement this morning. the changes attempt to push the auto industry toward making more electric vehicles, but give manufacturers a bit more flexibility to roll out a

the city council passed a measure to hire a team of 15 new employees to sweep oakland and clear out all these dumped vehicles. the city will use vacant caltrans lots beneath freeway overpasses to store those abandoned cars. >> a report obtained exclusively by the abc7 news i-team shows just how bad the problem is, and which neighborhoods are being impacted the most. >> abc7 news i-team reporter stephanie sierra went to see for herself, and she's here with us to show us what she found. stephanie. >> yes, dan and emma. we did a ride along through east oakland, and within minutes we saw dozens of abandoned cars that were reportedly stolen weeks or many months ago. but they just sit there and as we found out, certain areas are being targeted for these so-called dump sites. >> you're not going to believe what you're going to see, but we'll take you there. >> it's a problem that's both hidden. put your camera down and glaring at the same time. >> now to your right. that just happened. >> causing neighborhood chaos. >> you approached him to shoot you first on one street at a time. >> this is unbelievable. see,

stolen cars are being dumped all over oakland. i hear this one. you see them everywhere. you see that in residential streets, right in the red zone. >> business districts that was just abandoned. >> even on the train tracks. >> stolen. abandoned. >> there's so many. the city is leasing space just to have somewhere to put them. >> see the guy towing them in, dumping them here? >> huge lots like this one. this is where they're taken. that's been at capacity with more than 2000 inside. >> you see, in the further, further back they are stacked on top of each other. some get picked up, some don't. >> we witnessed all of this during a ride along with council member noel gayo, his staffer preston turner and our security guard within 15 minutes look on the corner, turner pointed out at least 25 abandoned cars within a two mile radius. after 30 minutes, that turned into what you think at least 50, at least roughly 50, abandoned cars see that? gallo says the problem has tripled on the streets this

year. why? >> what i heard yesterday we don't have space to locate them. >> the city storage lots for abandoned cars are packed and expensive. >> we do not own the lot. we are renting the lot. >> gallo says the city is paying close to $1 million each year for lots like these, used to store abandoned cars. these cars stored here or in places guiao calls illegal dump sites. >> that's an illegal dump site. you're not supposed to be charging people to dump your trash and then install it. >> gallo says these are operations where people strip stolen cars, then sell the parts to nearby auto shops. then what's left gets dumped. see all these cars here? >> they haul them in here, they strip them. you see? they're stripping the tires. see him right there? >> he says some are run by known gang members. just be careful. >> yeah, because don't put your camera down. >> why doesn't the cop pull up, find out that it's stolen, and arrest the guys that are there

stripping the car. >> that's the challenge. >> why don't they do that? our priority and we'll deal with violent crime. >> some of the cars have citations waiting to be towed, while most are just sitting there and look, well, not pretty. this is a tire. yeah >> it's abandoned. >> collecting dust for three weeks. one month, four months. who knows how long a new report from oakland's department of transportation shows more than 13,800 abandoned cars reported just within a six month time period last year. to put that in perspective, our analysis during that same time frame found oakland has more abandoned cars than san jose and san francisco cities with roughly double the population size. >> and we asked for help. and they say, well, our procedure in oakland, you know, pursuit, you're on your own exact word. >> the abandoned cars are not only an eyesore, but a hassle. some parking in front of a gate. >> can we leave all the time you see him or blocking access to

this elementary school? >> they had these abandoned cars on the sidewalk which left teachers without parking. it's just not fair. we report them, they clean it up. they're back like ants. >> residents like bernadette burton are fed up. >> 17th and jackson. every month we have a stolen car there and it sits there for the whole month. yeah, the whole block reports it. there's nothing they can do. >> they just say no. opd no longer will respond to reports of abandoned vehicles unless it's parked in front of your driveway and you can't get into your house. if not, the oakland department of transportation is authorized to respond. but as you can see, that can take a while. residents have to wait for it to be reported cited, and then in some cases, get stuck with the tow bill. >> it happened to my assistant and my office, she had to pay like close to $500. why have you steal my car? do i have to pay a valid question? >> right? why should you have to pay for someone else's crime?

cleaning up, setting out umbrellas and seating. the lunch rush at sons of liberty alehouse in san leandro. but less than two weeks ago, on march 9th, the alameda county public health department says someone with the measles was a customer. here they didn't know they had it at the time and may have exposed others. >> the patient did not become infected at sons of liberty, and at this time we are not aware of anyone who developed measles. due to this exposure at sons of liberty county, health officials believe the infected person contracted the virus while traveling internationally a few weeks before coming here. >> they wouldn't name the country brad haire, an infectious disease physician with kaiser permanente, says it takes about two weeks for symptoms to show up. >> fever for the malays. people feel tired. people feel rundown. maybe your runny nose. people are familiar that measles causes a pretty typical rash that usually shows up a few days into the into the uh, into the symptoms. >> and he says it wouldn't be contracted by touching a menu,
