life threatening injuries but has now died. the entire family has died. investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash at a bus shelter. diego cardoso de oliveira and his wife matilde ramos pinto, their toddler and baby were waiting at a muni bus stop in san francisco's west portal neighborhood when an suv plowed into them on saturday. police chief william scott spoke about the tragedy at yesterday evening's police commission meeting, this was this was a horrific incident and heartbreaking. there was a vigil held monday night and the community came out in mass to support the victims of this accident. this collision, rather, police arrested the 78 year-old driver who was behind the wheel of a mercedes suv that crashed into the bus shelter. >> she was arrested on reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter charges but has since been released from police custody. abc seven suzanne phan

talked to the attorney for the driver, who said his client is also devastated by what happened . >> this is a very difficult time for her as well, you know, this is a tragedy that she has to find a way to live with and navigate. >> san francisco da brooke jenkins says her office is still reviewing the case to determine what charges the driver might face. and that driver is still in the hospital. live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news gloria, thank you. >> this morning, the social media platform that calls itself the front page of the internet will enter a new era. san francisco headquartered reddit is going public. the company is targeting a valuation of about $6.5 billion. reddit said yesterday that it would offer 22 million shares, pricing them at $34 each. tech analysts say the ipo is more of a necessity than a choice. >> they have to monetize because they, you know, they're income is in negative because of the expenses they have to maintain the servers and the computers.

>> the social media company has infamously never turned a profit. reddit's debut on wall street has many analysts cautiously optimistic it could lead to other ipos in silicon valley later this year. >> this morning, one week after the house approved a bill that could potentially ban tiktok in the u.s, senators from both sides of the aisle have a stark new warning about the app. amanda is tracking this story from the live desk and amanda, one senator compared tiktok to a gun aimed at americans. >> yeah, kumasi certainly an alarming statement that lawmakers are raising new security concerns as they consider a crackdown. it comes after senators yesterday got a classified briefing about how tiktok, owned by chinese company bytedance, uses the information it gathers against americans. one concern the app could be used by china to influence the upcoming presidential election. >> tiktok is a grave national security threat to americans. >> tiktok is a gun aimed at americans heads. i will say very emphatically, the american

people need and deserve to hear what we've just been told because they would be deeply frightened. >> bytedance denies sharing americans data with the chinese government. tiktok has urged its 170 million users in the u.s. to contact their lawmakers to oppose the bill, passed by the house. now if passed, the bill would force bytedance to sell the app or face a ban in the u.s. still no word on whether the senate will take up that bill. but there appears to be growing support for some action later this spring. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. a man has been arrested after police say he hid a camera inside a starbucks bathroom in san jose. more than 90 people were reportedly filmed since january, the youngest being four years old. this happened at the starbucks near coleman avenue and taylor street, san jose. police say an employee found the camera under the bathroom sink. it was facing the toilet. we spoke to a father whose son attends a school nearby. >> it's sickening. it is a

feeling of being violated and this is wrong, you know, i'm glad they caught the person and i hope they the hammer comes down hard on them. >> police found guns and other micro cameras at the 35 year old suspect's home. he's facing multiple charges, including a child. authorities couldn't comment if the footage was sent to another location or uploaded online, starbucks said in a statement. this is a deeply disturbing incident, and we are grateful for the quick and thorough response from the san jose police department and apprehending the suspect. >> the security at the salt lake city international airport is being questioned after authorities say a man boarded a plane without a ticket. >> investigators say the 26 year old took photos of other passengers boarding passes, then used those images to get through the gate. flight attendants realized his ticket wasn't valid before the flight took off. abc news confirms he was booked on two standby flights that were full. he told authorities he was just trying to get home. some more unfortunate airline news. if you fly jetblue, there is

arbaugh. >> he's the first recipient of the neuralink brain implant. the device decodes movement and tension from brain signals. during the live stream last night, arbaugh was able to play a game of chess. in the video game civilization, the movements of the cursor all con through the neuralink implant. according to neuralink, which has its offices in fremont, residents in an east bay neighborhood are looking to move after an attempted robbery turned deadly outside of their homes. it happened within twin bridge circle off of contra costa boulevard and pleasant hill, police say two people tried to steal from a delivery driver on his way home. that led to a shootout between both parties, leaving the driver and one of the suspects dead. the driver is 63 year old peter popovich. he worked for a company that sells packaging material for legal cannabis companies. a mother who lives there says she saw the suspect shot multiple times.

>> the fact that we saw the body right there, it's something that i have never experienced in my life before, ever. and i, i can't stay, i can't, i'm not i don't feel safe >> police believe popovich was targeted and say he had a valid permit to carry a concealed gun. the other suspect reportedly sped off after shots were fired. investigators say three bart workers made a habit of showing up to work, clocking in and then going right back home. bart inspector general has put out a new report. it says these employees were getting paid their regular salary and overtime, and in one instance, a technician for the system's automatic fare collection system clocked in and did not work the shift for a total of 106 hours over 18 days. last year. so that earned him more than $9,000 in falsely billed wages and benefits. he retired after investigators got bart police

tonight we'll hang on to those mostly cloudy conditions and overnight lows in the upper 40s to the low 50s. as we get into friday, friday and saturday it is a level one for light to moderate showers. it's a light storm, slick roadways, and saturday we have that chance of a thunderstorm popping up. here's future weather friday right around lunchtime, the showers are focused in the north bay. it's into the afternoon. in the evening, those showers will move south and east across the rest of the region heading into saturday. now we're dealing with that. low pressure in the showers are more scattered in nature and saturday afternoon there you can see some pops of yellow on your screen. those isolated cells could be a thunderstorm that moves through pretty quickly here to start out the weekend. rainfall totals heading through tomorrow and saturday close to an inch in some of our wettest spots in the north bay. a little bit lower than that around the bay shoreline. closer to a quarter or a half of an inch of rain. just quickly, a winter storm watch is in effect tomorrow through sunday. up to three feet of snow possible over our highest peaks. accuweather seven day filtered sun today. rain is back here tomorrow. a chance of

businesses in the area are still recovering from apec. that summit forced multiple street closures and blocked foot traffic to some businesses, and a similar boost is happening in the south bay this week. san jose is hosting one of its biggest conventions since the pandemic. nvidia's ai conference is drawing people from all over and the visitors could provide a nice boost for local companies. one of them is frost cupcake factory, the owner tells abc seven that nvidia ordered 1000 cupcakes. besides being grateful for their business, she's noticed a change in the downtown area. >> you can just tell the whole city is booming, the hotels are packed, everything. there's people walking with lanyards everywhere. it's pretty cool. we've been waiting for this to come back so something like this is huge for us. >> officials are working to entice more companies and groups to hold their events in san jose. it's estimated this year they'll generate a nearly $80 million economic windfall. it's about to be the best time of the year for local beer lovers.

russian river brewing company will release its coveted pliny the younger beer starting tomorrow morning. it will be available at russian river's pubs in santa rosa and windsor through april 4th. every year, thousands of people line up to get their pour of pliny the younger. it's one of the world's highest rated beers. this year marks the 20th annual release. next, at 630, apple stock dropping this morning after news it could be sued for violating antitrust laws related to the iphone and the white house trying to zap student loan debt for thousands of americans who will see some of their loans forgiven as we head to break a live look outside. it's 627.

lafayette. authorities say he was heading to work in san francisco when a speeding truck connected to a store break in in el cerrito collided with his vehicle. abc seven spoke with a woman who was a victim, and another police pursuit back in december and officer chasing a car across the bay bridge and into the east bay crashed into her. >> there are other safer alternatives to police chases. and i really think that we need to approach police chases with extreme caution. >> based on a 2021 report, chp says there were around 12,000 police pursuits that year. of those, 20% resulted in a crash. about 60% were property damage. only 25% were injury crashes and close to 2% were deadly. >> a woman has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for a bizarre crime that involved identity theft, forgery and dumping a dismembered body in

san francisco bay, the justice department says 44 year old caroline hurling broke into the los angeles home of charles wilding. wilding in 2020. investigators don't know how wilding died, but after his death, they say hurling and her accomplices used his identity to steal his money and real estate. eventually, they dismembered his body. they dumped it in san francisco bay to conceal their crime, to be preying on older, fragile people. >> it's the same thing for me as preying on animals, innocent animals, children. she needs to be behind bars. >> hurling owes $4 million in restitution. her coconspirator will be sentenced in june. >> new this morning petaluma police need your help to find two people accused of stealing more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from a hardware store. >> officers released this photo of the suspects. they say last thursday, the man and the woman entered a free men's home improvement center on mcdowell avenue and stole several spools

of copper wire and then drove away in a maroon colored car. police in petaluma are asking you to give them a call if you know who these people are. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins firing back at one of her toughest critics, supervisor aaron peskin . this is what he said during a board of supervisors meeting earlier this week. >> given what has been going on, i think it is appropriate that we ask for the release of the investigation. details of mrs. wu's death. that, as i said, was ruled an accidental death. this resolution, colleagues, i think, is consistent with our efforts to build community trust, particularly in the criminal justice system. >> mrs. wu is yang fang wu. police say she was shoved to the ground in july. no arrest was made. the push was determined to be accidental. but then the person who's believed to have shoved wu got arrested last week for a similar incident in the bayview. d.a. jenkins didn't hold back, saying her hands are tied unless police make an arrest in wu's case, saying,

quote, supervisor peskin is sadly showing his ignorance and complete lack of understanding of how the criminal justice system works. my office's jurisdiction begins only after an arrest is made, and a case is presented by law enforcement for charging your voice, your vote. >> prop one has been narrowly approved by california voters. it now has enough votes to pass, with more than 50% of voters saying yes. the bond measure requires counties to spend $6.4 billion on mental health services, treatment facilities and housing for the unhoused. counties will be required to spend about two thirds of the money for those with serious mental illness or substance abuse issues, it is a big win for governor gavin newsom, political science expert melissa michelson says the governor can now have a successful upcoming state of the state address. >> it was kind of taking a risk, right, because if it didn't pass and then he went and did the state of the state with that loss, then he'd have to speak about it in a different way.

of zen, shall we say, of santa cruz this morning. it's quite nice out there. we have one final dry day this week. today it is filtered sunshine as clouds move in this afternoon ahead of showers on friday. it is a level one light storm here to finish out the week. and then on saturday we even have the chance of a thunderstorm popping up as low pressure spins across northern california. but today it's all about dry conditions. pleasant temperatures this afternoon, 60s and 70s. by 4 p.m. tonight, we'll stay dry, but we're mostly cloudy temperatures overnight, dipping into the upper 40s and into the lower 50s. now, the storm impact scale will be used tomorrow and saturday to level one light system with slick roads on saturday. that's when we do have a chance of a thunderstorm popping up. so future weather tomorrow morning it's mostly cloudy around lunchtime. the showers are mainly focused in the north bay. it's into the afternoon. the evening those showers move south and east through friday night. then on saturday behind the front, low pressure will try and bring us some isolated showers. could have some quick downpours and even the chance of a
