in the castro is set to receive top honors in dc next month. castro community patrol is being honored by the fbi for its work in keeping the public safe. and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, they're getting quite the sendoff from local leaders from the streets of the castro to washington, dc. >> this group of volunteer patrol officers is set to be honored in a big way. >> we had the honor of being able to receive an early version of the award that the fbi will be giving us officially on april 19th. >> greg kerry is a volunteer with castro community on patrol, and the award he's talking about is the fbi community leadership award. san francisco's mayor, sheriff and other local leaders honoring the group earlier this week. >> this award is uh- around the training that we started doing after the shootings at the q club in colorado springs in 2022, and they've been aiming the training at nightclubs, bars and nonprofits hosting large

four hit and killed at a bus stop in san francisco's west portal neighborhood tonight. the family of those victims is thanking the public for their support. since saturday, the driver is now out of the hospital. while possible charges are still pending. >> governor newsom is hailing the narrow passage of proposition one, which aims to upgrade the state's mental health system with a $6.4 billion bond. the goal is to streamline how local governments deal with the homelessness and drug crisis. >> one single plan to address this issue and it's not just a plan, it's with real oversight, right? >> a dramatic scene in los angeles, a city bus crashing into the ritz carlton hotel downtown overnight after police say an armed man it. no passengers were on board at the time. both the bus driver and the driver of the car that was hit are expected to be okay. my deepest gratitude. >> goes to our mx

>> it's being called a modern medical miracle. for the first time ever, doctors at massachusetts general say they transplanted a genetically edited pig kidney into a living human. more than 100,000 people are on a federal transplant waiting list, but it's still unclear if these modified animal organs are safe. long terme a new city proposal in san jose, hopes to keep the rich traditions of local neighborhoods alive. >> next week, city council will consider a tenant preferences program if passed, 20% of new affordable housing will be reserved for low income applicants. another 15% of new units will be saved for applicants who live in the same district as that new housing, it can be modified for existing projects as well. some of the news to know tonight and here at abc seven news, we try every day to focus on building a better bay area. that means pointing out problems, highlighting solutions. of course, and celebrating when they're they

work. our breakthrough tonight is in oakland, the city's non-emergency crisis response team now has a phone number for people to call. that number is on your screen. it's an alternative to dialing 911 and can in a way, get help. if someone is having a mental health crisis or is on the streets and needs immediate help, called macro, the program is seen as another option. instead of getting the police involved. >> meanwhile, new kiosks are going up in oakland to help people get around and shine the spotlight on local businesses. when you touch the screen, it opens up a bunch of applications to help you navigate the city. the content is based upon whatever is going on in that particular neighborhood from events to restaurant. hidden gems every individual kiosk organizes based on proximity, and so each kiosk is highlighting a different local business. >> and so the impact is that you're small and local businesses get a lift without paying anything for any sort of search engine optimization. >> the kiosk company is paying

renew 72,000 policies this summer. 30,000 of those are homeowner and rental insurance policies. the other 42,000 are commercial apartment policies affected customers will be notified starting in july. state farm cited rising costs, risk and outdated regulations in its decision. this comes after it reported $6.3 billion in losses last year. also last year, the company stopped writing new homeowners policies in california because of wildfire risk for prospective college students. >> it seems taking the sat exam has turned into a competitive sport. the chronicle is reporting. there's a statewide shortage of testing sites. even though the exam moved online earlier this month, students still have to take it at a designated site. can't do it from home since there are not enough. some bay area students are traveling more than an hour away from home to take the sat, and the chronicle reports. others are even planning spring break trips or out-of-state vacations to places where they can find an open spot at a testing site.

>> the long terme weather forecast is in for spring, and it's good news for california for most of the east and california are expected to remain drought free this spring. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration put out its spring outlook today, and it predicts a warmer than average season. but thanks to all the rain and snow we got, the wildfire risk is low for now. water reserves are in good shape in california. after a second straight year of near to above average snowfall. forecasters, however, are keeping an eye on ocean temperatures, conditions indicate a cooler la nina may develop at some point this summer, and that could affect the weather for the second half of the year. >> in the north bay, a smelly situation is developing at a popular national park. for several weeks now, there's been no trash pickup at the point reyes national seashore and the garbage is really, as you can imagine, beginning to pile up. rangers say nearly every dumpster across the park's 71,000 acres is full of trash. that's because they have no way to get rid of it. the national

park service has just one trash truck for the entire seashore, and it broke down weeks ago. >> the repairs are pretty extensive. and, because you know, we're using federal dollars to, repair this this truck. we have to go through a specific process. >> rangers say repairing the trash truck could take about two weeks. in the meantime, they're asking visitors to take home their trash. some dumpsters have signs posted. leave no trash, no collection services available. you think they could lease or rent one in emergency center, right? >> right. all right, well, some kids recently discovered something that's never been found before in the santa cruz mountains. >> yeah, they were looking for crawdads and as they dug through the mud, they discovered a fossil of the jefferson ground sloth. >> it was determined to be a radius bone, and quite possibly one of the largest ever found from the creature. they are named after thomas jefferson, who documented discovering fossils in west virginia in the late 1700s. since it's only one bone. kids want to find the rest

here's the forecast animation. at 7 a.m. you notice the cloud cover and then a line of showers sweeping through during the midday and mid-morning hours, mainly in the north bay initially, but then sweeping southward and eastward. rain spreading to other parts of the bay area. the morning commute will likely not be affected by the rain. the evening commute certainly will be as showers will follow the first line of rainfall into saturday into saturday night, and even into sunday before it starts to wind down for tonight, though, during the overnight hours, just increasing clouds, low temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 40s, many locations will not see low temperatures dropping below 50 degrees, so fairly mild overnight. then tomorrow, even with the arrival of rain, it's going to be a mild day temperature wise with highs mainly in the mid to upper 60s up in the north bay, a little bit cooler in a few spots. there but most of the area will see high temperatures ranging from 65 to about 69 degrees. now here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have three consecutive days of level one rainfall coming our way, and that's tomorrow and saturday. by the way, it's going to turn quite chilly on saturday. temperatures are going to drop
