landmark antitrust case accusing apple of illegally squeezing out competitors to the iphone. >> we've been hearing from experts on whether the government has a case. could apple be broken up and what changes could iphone users eventually see? abc's perry russom is here now with more on this and some answers. perry. good morning. >> good morning rihanna. the lawsuit comes down to this. can antitrust laws force a company to redesign its product to make it more compatible with a competitor's product? this morning, the justice department is accusing apple of engineering an illegal monopoly in smartphones, boxing out competitors while dominating 70% of the market, almost equivalent to driving on a highway with posted speed limits and as your speed increases, you are more likely to draw the scrutiny of a patrol car and a speed in antitrust law, that's important as a speed of, let's say roughly 70. prosecutors claim apple forces customers to use the iphone and its accessories alone, denying them access to digital pay services other than apple pay and making it harder

for them to text with people who use other brands like android. >> as any iphone user who has ever seen a green text message or received a tiny, grainy video can attest. >> in the lawsuit, prosecutors referenced this exchange from two years ago between apple ceo tim cook and a consumer who was questioning cook on whether apple would fix iphone to android messaging to make it more seamless. >> now, to make it personal. but i can't see my mom certain videos or she can't see me certain videos. and so we leave. >> buy your mom an iphone, apple says if the government's lawsuit is successful, it would hinder our ability to create the kind of technology people expect from apple. >> the case is similar to the government's case against microsoft in the late 1990s, when a lawsuit targeted microsoft for tying its internet browser to its own operating system. >> both cases focus very heavily on the capacity of the dominant firm to deflect challenges that would bring alternative products and services to the market. they have somewhat different

theories, though, about the method of exclusion. >> the government eventually won against microsoft, forcing the company to give customers access to web browsers other than internet explorer, but experts say there's one big difference between the two cases. they say microsoft had a clear monopoly, but apple's position may not be as clear cut due to third party apps being involved. >> courts have been very reluctant to get into the process of deciding you have to run your business and your product in the following way in order to give others was a greater opportunity to interconnect and interact. that's going to be maybe the hardest element of the case for the department of justice. >> and one thing is certain experts say this case will likely drag on for years. rihanna, back to you. >> all right, perry, thank you for that breakdown. the government is also looking to crack down on price gouging in the supermarket industry after a new report found major grocery stores took advantage of supply shortages during the pandemic. the federal trade commission claims large supermarket chains raised their prices higher than

necessary to pad their profits, and pressured food suppliers to favor them over smaller stores. >> a violent scene at the southern border. new video shows migrants rushing through a border fence in el paso, texas. take a look migrants stormed the border, overwhelming national guard troops sent to the border by the governor. some local politicians are voicing outrage at the scene, while others claim it shows that deploying the national guard is ineffective. those migrants were eventually taken into custody for processing it all comes as an appeals court considers a new texas law that would allow local police to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the border illegally. >> new problems plaguing boeing, a so-called breaking anomaly, is now under investigation as airline executives demand a meeting with the company's board of directors after several recent safety incidents. this morning, safety standards at

boeing once again under scrutiny after investigators say the brakes failed on an american airlines flight in dallas. >> there have been some problems down at boeing with its manufacturing process. >> the pilots realized they had no brakes after landing, forcing them to use thrust reversers to slow down, causing the boeing 737 to roll off the runway. >> they ran off into this engineered material. it slowed them down to a stop without anybody being hurt. >> investigators say the plane's brakes were replaced four days earlier. they say these images show how a maintenance worker apparently swapped the electric lines and hydraulic lines. >> normally, when you have an airplane that comes out of maintenance, you want to be extra careful. and that's why we run a lot of checklists and the maintenance folks run a lot of checklists. but these are human beings. and somebody got something wrong here. >> it's the latest in a string of incidents involving boeing planes. in january, a boeing 737 max nine jet lost a door panel in mid-flight due to four

missing bolts, prompting the faa to ground that model for weeks. during that time, alaska united found loose bolts on grounded planes, and a supplier found mis drilled holes in window frames. just this month, an external panel fell off this united jet, and a 777 lost a wheel during takeoff in san francisco, crushing several cars below. now the top airline executives are reportedly demanding a meeting with boeing's board of directors. >> they're actually going over the ceo's head, and that suggests that they want to talk about the strategy of the company, the long terme, direction of it. on a recent earnings call with investors, ceo david calhoun addressed the safety concerns. >> we simply must be better. our customers deserve better. >> the associated press reports airline executives could meet as soon as next week with boeing's board of directors, an escaped prisoner and his alleged accomplice have been captured in idaho, but the investigation is just beginning. >> white supremacist gang leader skyler mead and his friend were

arrested about 130 miles from the boise hospital, where police say the two staged a shooting, allowing mead to escape. police are now investigating two murders, potentially tied to the men, including the killing of an elderly man found near the getaway car. we turn now to former president trump's financial troubles. he has until monday to pay nearly half $1 billion in his civil fraud case, but he may soon have a new financial option at his disposal . with former president trump's bond payment deadline looming, new york attorney general letitia james is laying the groundwork to seize some of his assets. james has filed documents that could lead to the seizure of trump's golf course and his estate in westchester county, should the former president fail to post his $464 million bond by monday. >> we have a lot of cash and we have a great company, but they want to take it away. >> trump's lawyers say he faces insurmountable difficulties obtaining a bond that 30 insurance companies have turned him down because he doesn't have enough cash, and they won't accept his properties as

collateral. trump says the attorney general is trying to force him to sell his real estate at fire sale prices. and if and when i win the appeal, they would be gone. >> if trump does not post his bond by monday, state officials aren't going to close these buildings down. but they could move to file liens to start to claim ownership. and that might give us a window into what some of trump's assets are actually worth. >> but trump could soon see a cash windfall. today, shareholders of a large shell company could vote on whether to merge with trump's media company . that merger would put the media company, which includes trump's social media platform, truth social, on the stock market. the former president's stake could be worth billions. trump would not immediately be able to convert that stock into cash, but could potentially take loans out against it. the timing of that potential merger is still being worked out. meanwhile, trump's legal costs aren't his only financial challenge. he's also trailing president biden in fundraising. >> well, despite a cold start for millions of americans this spring, the government's new outlook says things will improve. forecasters predict

bag. >> i've been here for 22 years. we've never had an incident like this. police say the victim, nadia vitols, was visiting her late mother's apartment in new york city, which had been unoccupied for months. >> police say her arrival surprised two squatters who'd been living there. a struggle ensued and vitols was killed. >> you're getting arrested right now. i'm being arrested. for what? >> for being in my house. for being in my own home. >> just this week, another woman in new york visiting a home she inherited from her parents was arrested for changing the locks. the move allegedly violated the so-called squatters rights of a group of people staying there. >> there's rules to the as you got to go to court to send me to civil court, all 50 states have squatters rights laws meant to protect long time tenants from eviction. >> in new york city's case, a person only needs to be on a property for 30 days to claim squatters rights, meaning the legal owner cannot evict them without going to court. critics say it's not just potential criminals who are taking advantage. this beverly hills mansion was recently taken over by squatters who threw massive parties. lawmakers in florida

are so fed up they passed a bill this month allowing police to immediately remove squatters without going through the court system. a new york lawmaker is pushing a similar bill. >> people could stay in a home for years, years without having justice brought to them for staying essentially for free and making a homeowner have to pay their bills. >> as for those two squatters accused of killing a woman in new york, police say they stole her car and crashed near harrisburg, pennsylvania. but they are still on the run. >> surgeons in boston have made history transplanting a kidney from a genetically engineered pig into a human, and doctors at mass general say the patient, rick sleiman, had been suffering from end stage kidney failure. now he's almost well enough to go home. my deepest gratitude >> goes to our mgh team. picture a different narrative, one where healthy, young kidneys are readily available for transplantation, often in individuals with advanced kidney

speeding were factors a warning for travelers. >> this morning. hackers have uncovered a security flaw that could open millions of hotel room doors. the good news is they're also helping to fix it. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> this morning hotel guests beware. with the right technology researchers posing as hackers say they've uncovered a way to hack into key cards to open millions of doors at hotels around the world. wired magazine reports. there's an urgent push now to fix the flaw. >> with just two taps, they can open these doors in seconds, researchers found security vulnerabilities within the locks encryption system. >> they say using a key card, they crack the code and essentially made a master key. >> these security researchers have actually exposed this. and that's a good thing because now dormakaba, the lock manufacturer, can start the process of trying to update all these locks around the world and fix this. >> they say the lock company has updated about one third of the locks so far. in a statement,
