come together. we have flood watches from south florida up through coastal maine. the timing for us, tomorrow for flash flooding starts in the mid-atlantic and overnight hours and then until 5 p.m. that's when it really revs up for the tri state. anyone in yellow, boston, providence, 2 to 4 inches of rain falling in a six hour period. if you have plans saturday on the east coast, beware. >> michael: thank you for that, ginger. gonna be a messy weekend. now the border and the dramatic video showing a group of migrants breaching a barbed wire fence overwhelming troops. mireya villarreal joins us from texas with the story. good morning. >> reporter: agents that work this area and are familiar with the case tell me this all started when texas troops tried to corral migrants a group that were actually on u.s. soil. there was a lot of back and forth between the two groups. that went on for hours and things definitely got tense take a look. this morning dramatic video from

the southern border. this scene in el paso showing what appears to be a group of migrants breaching a barbed wire fence installed by the state of texas as part of operation lone star. vastly outnumbering texas national guard troops. constitutionality of the fence now being challenged. the barrier is on public land and is in addition to the federal government's border wall, a short distance away. some guard members appear to push and strike a number of migrants coming through, but other guardsmen seen in the video don't immediately rush to help. watch as this man pulls out his phone. at the border wall, only federal agents can open the gate. texas guardsmen cannot. the incident shown from another angle appears to show national guard troops apprehending a handful of migrants. sources tell abc news, u.s. border patrol agents took them into custody for processing.

u.s. customs and border protection issuing a statement after the incident assuring abc news that all migrants from this group have been moved from the site. additional personnel have been deployed to the scene adding individuals and families without a legal basis to remain in the united states will be removed. we did try to get more information from the texas guard and troopers on any potential injuries or arrests, but nobody responded to our requests. the governor did post on social media that today he's telling them to put more razor wire back in that area. guys? >> rebecca: thank you. we turn to now details about the escaped convict in idaho who is now back in custody. overnight police arrested a third suspect in connection with his escape. now the question, did he kill two people while on the run? victor oquendo joins us now. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. they were on the run for a day and a half.

it all started here at this hospital in a shootout with officers. now inmate skyler meade and the accomplice that allegedly helped him escape are both in custody, captured in twin falls, southeast of boise. new this morning police in twin falls tell us a third person was arrested for them, 52-year-old tonya hubert, charged with possession of a controlled substance and felony eluding. there's no word on what their relationship is or her involvement in the escape. but abc news has learned huber was arrested with meade in one car while the other in a separate vehicle. no shots fired at either scene. though their escape did turn deadly, law enforcement now investigating two homicides in different counties in idaho. potentially tied to their escape, including the death of an elderly man. the suspects are expected to be arraigned today as authorities investigate multiple crime scenes across the state. michael? now the justice department filing a land mark lawsuit

against apple accusing the tech giant of illegally squeezing out competitors to the iphone. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the story and what this means for iphone users. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it's an epic legal fight with the doj accusing one of the world's most powerful companies of achieving its 70% dominance of the u.s. smart phone market by illegally manipulating the product. this morning doj claiming apple supremacy in the smart phone market is rooted in illegal anti-competitive behavior that cost you more. according to doj, apple uses a variety of illegal methods to maintain its dominance to try and force you to use the iphone and its accessories alone including making it more difficult for iphone users to text with those who use other brands. >> as any iphone user who has ever seen a green text message or received a tiny grainy video can attest, apple's anti-competitive conduct also includes making it more difficult for iphone users to

message with nonapple products. >> reporter: they also claim apple prevents companies from offering apps that compete with apple products. prosecutors say it blocked them from nonapple financial services. the only thing available on apple phones is apple pay. apple saying, quote, this lawsuit threatens who we are, its principles that set apple products apart. what the doj is asking apple to do appears at odds with its legendary founder. >> people who are serious about software should make their own hardware. >> reporter: apple is accusing doj of setting a, quote, dangerous precedent where the government takes a heavy hand in designing people's technology. guys? >> >> michael: what's at stake

for the consumer? >> rebecca: there are really big claims involved here, michael. what's at stake is, if the doj wins this suit, the iphone becomes more like the android. there are more apps apple doesn't get to oversee in the app store. that iphone is less of the part of the apple ecosystem. and more part of the overall ecosystem. this is a tough case for the doj because they really have to prove the consumer is not better off by having that interoperability. lot of consumers buy their apple products specifically for that purpose. >> michael: when you text somebody it won't be green? it will all be the same? [ laughter ] >> rebecca: that's one of them. >> michael: that's right. that's how you tell the difference which friends have androids and which have iphones. thank you. >> george: now to israel where secretary of state blinken is meeting with prime minister netanyahu amid growing tensions with the administration over the war in gaza and the humanitarian crisis. matt gutman is in tel aviv. good morning, matt. >> reporter: secretary blinken arrived with a stark message from the white house.

ceasefire now. it comes just hours before the u.s. is set to present a new ceasefire resolution to the u.n. security counsel calling for an immediate sustained ceasefire tied to a hostage release. we understand there are about 100 living hostages being held in gaza, five americans. but this is a significant change in the u.s. position. u.s. has blocked three previous un ceasefire resolutions. the u.s. has been much more critical of israel's handling of the war, saying it needs to do more to prevent an emerging famine in gaza. israel's prime minister netanyahu and president biden have been openly sparring about israel's offensive into rapha where 1.5 million palestinians have been sheltering, many suffering catastrophic hunger. but a note of optimism from the secretary, who says there is some progress in those hostage talks. but also some challenges. george? >> george: thanks. turning to ukraine. massive attack by russia overnight in what ukraine is calling the most devastating attack since the war with russia

began. tom soufi burridge has more. good morning, tom. >> reporter: an absolutely brutal night for ukraine. it was the largest attack ever on ukrainian power plants according to a state official. in terms of the destruction, we have not seen anything like this before. a vast hydroelectric power plant the largest in the country, in the south, on fire this morning. one official warning they're now at risk of losing that plant. russia striking the structures, launching more than 150 missiles and drones, one of the biggest barrages of the entire war. at least three people killed. and this morning ukrainian president zelenskyy expressing frustration over the holdup on u.s. weapons supply, saying there are no delays for russian missiles. these strikes come after weeks of ukrainian drone at tax on oil refineries in russia. this morning the kremlin saying the u.s. should tell ukraine to hold those attacks inside russia. rebecca? >> rebecca: tom, thank you. back here at home, the latest on

donald trump, who has just three days left to post a nearly half billion dollar bond in the new york civil fraud case. aaron katersky is outside trump tower, an asset that could be seized by the state. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: sure could. good morning to you, rebecca. trump has until monday to cover that nearly half billion dollar civil fraud judgment or risk new york attorney general leticia james seizing his assets. this morning she has already taken a preliminary step. james has notified westchester county, north of new york city, about that civil fraud judgment against trump. that's a sign she may be eyeing his golf course in briar cliff manor and a large estate known as seven springs in bedford, new york, in addition to properties here in new york city and potentially elsewhere. trump's attorneys have said he's facing insurmountable difficulties in securing the bond. more than 30 underwriters have turned him down because he lacks the cash and they refuse to accept his real estate as

collateral. so trump has asked an appeals court to either pause the judgment or let him post a smaller bond. if that doesn't work and trump still does not post the bond on time, it's not like state officials will be closing down any of trump's properties. but they could move to file liens against them. they could try to freeze his bank accounts and start collecting rent from his tenants. none of this is going to be quick, george. trump is expected to fight every step of the way. george? >> george: thank you very much. in the wake of several safety incidents a braking issue is under investigation and airlines are demanding a meeting with the board of directors. trevor ault has the story. reurt's been a steady drum beat of safety issues. this latest one, a plane rolling off the runway with no brakes. some passengers are growing weary and it appears some airlines may be as well. this morning safety standards at boeing once again under scrutiny after investigators say the brakes failed on an american airlines plane in dallas.

>> there have been some problems with its manufacturing process. >> reporter: the pilots realized they had no brakes after landing forcing them to use trust reversers to slow down, causing the boeing 737 to roll off the runway. >> they ran off into this engineered material. it slowed them down without anybody being hurt. >> reporter: investigators say the plane's brakes were replaced four days earlier. they say these images show how a maintenance worker apparently swapped the electric line and the hydraulic line. it is just one in a string of incident involving a boeing plane. just this month an external panel fell off this jet. a 777 lost a wheel during takeoff in san francisco crushing several cars below. and in january, a boeing 737 max 9 jet lost a door panel in middoor flight due to four missing bolts prompting the faa to ground that model for weeks. now top airline executives are reportedly demanding a meeting with boeing's board of directors. on a recent earnings call with

>> reporter: good morning, michael. this story is just fascinating, guys. doctors in boston have transplanted a pig kidney into a 62-year-old man. it is the latest experiment in the pursuit to use animal organs in humans. the patient says this will provide hope for people who need a transplant to survive. this morning the world's first successful transplant of a pig kidney to a living person. >> it was a high wire act in the or. >> reporter: doctors at massachusetts general hospital announcing the first of its kind procedure took place this weekend, transplanting a genetically edited pig kidney into a 62-year-old man with end stage kidney disease. >> the kidney picked up immediately. everyone in the operating room burst into applause. it was truly the most beautiful kidney i have ever seen. >> reporter: nearly 90,000 people are on the wait list for a kidney in the u.s., but less than 16,000 are transplanted annually. on average, 17 patients die

every day while they wait. for this transplant team, the stakes couldn't be higher. >> my deepest gratitude goes to our team. >> reporter: doctors say the patient, a 62-year-old black man from massachusetts, had been desperately sick on dialysis with a failing transplanted kidney. black americans like slayman, are nearly four times as likely to suffer end stage kidney disease than white patients. >> when you look at the actual numbers, for example, in 2022, black patients represented only 11% of the kidney transplants. advancements like this cannot only help with opportunities, in terms of providing people hope, but there are real disparities affecting communities today. >> reporter: slayman said he accepted the transplant not only as way to help himself, but a way to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive. so far the patient's new kidney is functional. doctors will, of course, continue to monitor him for any signs of rejection.

his doctors say he is improving every day an he will be discharged soon. >> michael: amazing. >> rebecca: it really is. this gentleman, mr. slayman, had a human kidney transplant back in 2018. that was failing. this is his hope for an extended life. >> george: hope for a lot more. thanks. turning now to a warning for travellers. hackers found a way to access key cards to millions of hotel doors around the world. rihannon ally has the story. >> reporter: as scary as this is, there is one silver lining. the hackers are researchers. they are hoping to fix the problem so this information doesn't end up in the wrong hands. this morning hotel guests beware. with the right technology, researchers posing as hackers say they've uncovered a way to hack into key cards to open millions of doors at hotels around the world. wire magazine reports there is an urgent push to fix the flaw. >> with two taps they can open the doors in seconds. >> reporter: researchers found

security vulnerability within the lock's encryption system. they say criminals cracked the code by taking a used key from a hotel, using a right through device to grab the code from the card, essentially creating a master key. >> the security features have exposed this. that's a good thing, because now the lock manufacturer can start the process of trying to update all of these locks around the world and fix this. >> reporter: they say the lock company has updated about one-third of the locks so far. in a statement, the company saying our customers and partners all take security very seriously and we are confident all reasonable steps will be taken to address this matter. >> we also have to consider that they may have done it in the past, these more professional profit motivated or politically motivated hackers. they may have exploited these locks in secret to get into hotels for profit or for intelligence purposes. >> reporter: now the locks in

changed again -- you're being arrested? >> i'm being arrested. >> reporter: for what? >> for being in my own home. >> reporter: police then took her away in handcuffs for unlawful eviction. when it comes to squatters homeowners across the country have to navigate a slew of laws which vary by state. in chicago, danielle cruz told our station wls when she tried to sell her home in 2022, a woman moved in claiming to have a lease. >> so we show up with the cops. there's a young woman in there with all of her belongings. they said they couldn't prove that she was trespassing. we have to go to court and follow the eviction process. >> reporter: but one man is fighting back. i understand you've been squatting at this residence? jacklyn lee met with the squatter hunter. >> is this a growing problem? >> i think that it's a growing problem, like anything else. >> reporter: when a squatter took over his mother's house, flash had her lease the home to

him and then moved in with the squatter until they left. he's now using the same tactic at other homes. >> i would have had right as a lease holder to go in, move in on him, put cameras on and eventually lock him out and i could force him to civilly try to fight to get back into a property he couldn't prove he had a legal right to be in. >> reporter: experts advise always getting an attorney, but warn it can be costly and take several months. >> squatters are looking for an opportunity. if they think a property is not being maintained or visited, they may make attempts to enter that property that they have no rights to enter. >> reporter: part of the reason this is even possible is because of loopholes in tennessee laws for obvious reasons. you can't have a landlord be able to change the locks at any time if there's a person staying there. of course, this process can be maddening, and new york is at the beginning of the case. that case is still unresolved. she will have to go to court to get those people out of her house. >> michael: unfortunate. going to cost her time and money.

filing a landmark lawsuit against apple, accusing the tech giant of illegally squeezing out competitors to the iphone. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the story and what this mean force iphone users. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this is going to be an epic legal fight with potentially broad impacts on the millions upon millions of people using iphones. doj filed a suit claiming apple is a monopoly that's achieved its 70% dominance in the u.s. smart phone market by illegally manipulating technology. the doj claims apple allegedly rigs the market in a number of ways including making it more difficult for iphone users to tech others with other smart phones making it more difficult for iphone users to use apps not designed by apple and forcing apple customers to use apple pay as their digital wallet. this morning apple is pushing back hard, accusing doj of overreach and setting a dangerous precedent where the government is too involved in how technology makes its way to consumers.

they say doj is wrong on the facts and the law and in essence, see you in court. rebecca? >> rebecca: a battle that could take many years even. okay, pierre, thank you so much. we turn to new hope for breast cancer patients who are unable to get surgery. our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton joins us with details. this could be a game changer. we all have people in our lives who have suffered from breast cancer. what does it mean? >> true advancement. what this is. this is a method that we use in medicine to freeze or kill abnormal or cancerous cells. i want to show you some results. the study was done at memorial sloan kettering. this is done by interventional raidologists. this option is for patients who don't have the option for surgery. but mainly historically it's only used in smaller breast tumors. the reason this is significant is because these 60 patients had an average tumor size of 2.5 centimeters. the result is that 90% were cancer-free a year later.

>> rebecca: 90%? >> george: wow. >> absolutely incredible. compare it to having no option of surgery alone. >> rebecca: that's incredible. when would it be available? >> this is already available now, but mainly studied in smaller masses. we'll have to wait to see more results in terms of the long term success on larger masses. but for anyone going through the process of breast cancer treatment, it's important to know your treatment is individual to you based on your history, diagnosis and goals and plan. or your plan or goal force that treatment, so talking to your oncologist is the first step. >> rebecca: real quickly, is there something you should say to your oncologist if you want them to pursue this? >> this is usually brought up for patients who can't undergo surgery for one reason or another. that's when you step down that road. >> rebecca: dr. sutton, thank you very much for breaking that down. >> sure. >> michael: coming up in our gma morning menu, a housing market reality check. are you better off buying or renting? the new research this morning. >> george: plus a teen said vaping was a gateway to other

with right now. do i buy or do i rent? at the current rate, if you buy, it's almost 40% higher than if you rent. >> it's a big gap. we're seeing this new data. it was released by a firm that tracks real estate prices. what it's showing is a new lease is just about $2,100. that will be your new payment amount. when taking out a new home mortgage your payment is almost $3,000 a month, 38% more expensive. what this analysis shows is it's going to be more expensive for sometime. one of the reasons is there's a housing shortage. there's not enough homes for people who want them. 4 million home shortage according to this research. obviously, this decision to buy or rent is a big one. there's a lot more than just looking at your monthly payment. it depends on where you live. markets like chicago, philly, that gap is smaller, san francisco, l.a. a lot bigger. when you're buying, you're building equity. that's something that doesn't

happen when you rent. one of the biggest factors you have to think about is how long you'll stay there. the difference every month is big. but a lot to think about. >> george: big increase in sales last month. what does that tell you? >> it tells you people want to buy homes. 10% increase in home sales. that's a lot earlier than we would see for february. normally we're going into spring market, you wouldn't see a number like that. what we also saw last month was housing inventory was up. when you talk to realtors and economist, what they say is people are accepting they have to move, to sell. for a long time people locked into low rates were saying, i i'm gonna stay here. i don't want to make that decision. now they're forced to make that decision. maybe it's because of a new school district or they need to down size. that's putting more homes on the market. that's good news if you're trying to buy. still super competitive. over one-third of the homes that sold last month were cash offers. >> rebecca: which makes it so tough for first time home buyers. mortgage rates are also part of the issue. >> we saw mortgage rates creep up. they were going down, now back closer to 7%.

still not at that 8% that we saw last year. what that means is you've got to negotiate that rate down. this is so important. if you are trying to get a lower rate shop around with your lender. see what they come up. even getting down from 7% to 6.5% will save you about $130 a month. it's important to go to different lenders and see what the best deals they can give you. >> michael: remember those super low rate days? >> not quite there. won't be there for a little while. >> george: now looking at e-cigarette use among young people. we'll talk to one teen who said it became a gateway to other drugs. erielle reshef is here. >> reporter: experts say nicotine is an addictive substance and may negatively impact the brain and may increase risk of addiction to other substances. 18-year-old elle said that's what happened to her. now she and her mom are sharing their experience and her road to sobriety. >> i was definitely addicted. >> reporter: addict is a word college freshman elle and her mom andrea took a long time to accept. >> everyone says i can stop

whenever i want to, i just don't want to. i was guilty of saying that over and over again. but i was 100% addicted. >> reporter: today, she says she's three years sober but recalls during the height of her youth, vaping was a top priority. >> it got to the point where i would start physically like shaking or vibrating. basically, be like twitching in class if i wasn't hitting it. >> reporter: more than 2.1 million youth currently use e-cigarettes. according to the national youth tobacco survey. the cdc said use of products that contain nicotine can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood and impulse control. >> this is a crisis. it's a crisis that we have not been able to get a handle on. >> reporter: for elle, the dangerous reality was vap was also a gateway. according to the cdc, nicotine use in adolescence may increase other drugs. >> i, like, wanted it to lead

into more things. everyone else was out smoking. i want to get high and seem cool. it led into weed and then smoking cigarettes and then also lsd. >> i saw her slipping away. i saw some things. oh, she has glassy eyes, or her speech would start being slurry. >> there are many ways their parents can tell if their children have been vaping. or have been exposed to nicotine. there could be behavioral symptoms such as irritability, agitation, changes in mood and appetite, disrupted sleep. >> reporter: for her mother, the hardest part was figuring out how to navigate the conversation. >> i googled a lot. how do you talk to your kids about this? how do you try to preserve your relationship in that was important to me, too? how do you respond, not react? there was yelling, for sure. definitely did a whole lot wrong. but i did try to keep the conversation going, keep the communication open and be curious.

meat is expensive. how do you save on that? >> there's a time when i was a single mom. i was on food stamps. i feel like that kind of always stays with you, right? what really caught me from that moment to stretch my budget, really utilize my pantry ingredients and create delicious recipes. that's really our goal with the cookbook and our website, just to bring pantry staples and create delicious meals out of them. so meat is a little more expensive. and so the london broil is a cheaper cut. beginning of the week i will buy my meat in bulk so i can spread it throughout the week. london broil, the marinade that we used was a pantry staple is going to make it so incredibly tender.

marinade is simple soy sauce, worchestershire sauce. and then spices. it turns out perfect. >> michael: i can work with that. i got that in the pantry. we're going beef again. next we're going tacos. you buy your beef at a local butcher. does that make it cheaper? >> if you go into your local butcher and you look, once a quarter usually, they'll have a big meat sale. >> michael: i didn't know that. >> that is the perfect time to stock up on your meat. don't be afraid to freeze your meat. you can use it six months to a year afterwards. so it's great to just pull out, right, and then create your meal. we ended up utilizing this and repurposing it for our street tacos. for taco tuesday. >> michael: taco tuesday. it smells good in the studio. that's tuesday. wednesday we have crock pot bourbon chicken. i love a good bourbon chicken. what's your advice for getting

the best price on chicken? >> this recipe went viral. people are loving this recipe right now. chicken thighs are a lot cheaper, or buying frozen chicken breasts will help save on that. and again again, put it in the slow cooker. it makes it so juicy and tender. it's perfect. >> michael: smells good, i gotta tell you. thursday eight can chicken taco soup. this was a huge hit with all your readers out there. how can you find bargains on canned goods? >> i always love a good case sale. i will just fill up my car, buy the cases. then all of the cans end up being a dollar or less. this meal comes together. and it is -- when the kids are asking what's

for dinner, you say go to the pantry. >> michael: pull out some stuff. >> pull out eight cans and you've got a delicious and flavorful soup. we used canned chicken for this which is really delicious. you can also reuse your bourbon chicken. >> michael: put that bourbon chicken in that. our crew is going to enjoy that for breakfast. we've got friday french toast. your four kids, this is their favorite. >> yes. breakfast for dinner. that's always a hit, right? a lot of times you'll have leftover bread from sandwiches, things like that. and so it's the perfect time to just pull it out and make french toast. the money that you're gonna be saving by using these pantry ingredients will end up -- you can pop fruit. >> michael: you have more money to do other things with, which is what this is all about. tried and true cookbook.

scissors -- look at me -- and i'm going to cut his head off. >> reporter: by august 30 of last year it had turned far darker. her youngest son had escaped, wounded and malnourished. we're referring to this 12-year-old boy by his initials r to protect his identity. r tells police he has other siblings who could still be in that house. >> didn't know if another sibling was in the same state of condition or possibly even dead in the home. we didn't know. >> reporter: police learned that house doesn't belong to the boy's mother but someone named jodi. jodi hildebrandt. jodi is ruby's business partner. police body camera footage being seen here publicly for the first time, police arrive at the house looking for other children. >> step out of the house. >> whoa whoa whoa. we're just going to check it
