over abandoned 911 calls. >> he didn't make any excuses, but instead he talked about what he learned from that experience. >> mayor tao believes that's the type of experience that will help mitchell forge a new path for the department. it is a challenge, and i get that. and i'm pretty sure chief mitchell understand that coming into this place, and but, you know, we will work on those challenges. sergeant hui win is president of the oakland police officers association. he hasn't met the new police chief, but he says chief mitchell already has the full support of the department. but others in the community are raising concerns. mikayla galvez venegas works on violence prevention. she believes the new chief will just be a band-aid to some of the larger issues within opd. >> there's already a preexisting culture in the police department , and, the police chief has the administrative power, but they can't shift the entire culture. >> carlton works with the city's asian population. his concerns center around how an outsider like chief mitchell will come to understand the needs of

oakland's diverse communities, and a city facing a historic deficit. >> in addition, you know, he has to navigate, you know, through the politics. and it's going to be a very interesting one. >> but business owner nina joyner says the new chief will provide leadership for a city that is in need of direction. >> when i see a police officer out on the street, i want them to walk right. i want them to walk like there's peace in the community and that's important. and i think the leadership can do that. >> chief mitchell will likely start at the beginning of may in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> the mayor made it clear tackling crime is priority number one, but mitchell will have a lot to juggle with staffing shortages and a budget deficit. abc seven news insider phil matier laid out how the new chief is in a uniquely challenging spot. >> also, he has to police the police because there is still questions about how the department itself operates. it's a tightrope. he's also going to be an outsider that's coming into a city that had its police chief last. police chief was basically born and raised there

and very popular among the population. so he's coming in as an outsider from texas. you put all these things together and it's a tough entry. >> mitchell will be the department's 12th police chief in 20 years. >> a sad ending tonight in the search for a missing hiker in monterey county. her body was found today at the base of a waterfall in the ventana wilderness. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez. with what we know about the woman and what might have happened to her friends and family, are remembering 30 year-old caroline meister as an incredible person. >> on monday, meister was reported missing to the monterey county sheriff's office. authorities say she went on a hike in the ventana wilderness in the big sur area. more than 100 people from 13 different agencies aided in the search from helicopters to search dogs. it was an all out effort to find her. >> one, was given this, given her clothes so that they can have her particular scent. and

then the other type of dogs that they have are just like general dogs that search for human scent. >> on friday, search crews found meister's body at the bottom of a waterfall off horse pasture trail. >> our trails are very steep in our area. >> they can be dangerous in some areas, and even experienced hikers could have slipped them falls. >> authorities say her injuries are consistent with falling down a cliff. >> there's a saying in the wilderness, danger and beauty coexist in a delicate balance. >> meister is a chicago area native. for the past two years, meister has lived and worked at the tassajara mountain zen center in rural monterey county. during friday's press conference, the sheriff relayed a message of gratitude from meister's parents on behalf of gina john, again, i want to express their prayers and thanks to the hundreds of volunteers that helped bring caroline home in the south bay. >> lauren martinez abc seven news. >> there is a new push to

increase access to reliable and affordable child care in the south bay. experts say. the lack isn't just affecting families with kids, it's really affecting the entire economy today. businesses policy makers and child care providers came together in san jose to discuss solutions that employers can be a part of. many providers say they've had a really difficult time after covid declining enrollment early in the pandemic led to daycare closures, teaming with employers to invest in employee child care is one possible solution. county officials believe would benefit both families and businesses. >> for every $1 that's invested publicly in child care, there's a $16 benefit to the workforce and industry in gained profitability. >> a $15 billion grant program was launched last fall to help silicon valley child care providers improve, and expand operations, after several reported problems in just three weeks. >> tonight, united airlines is facing new scrutiny. a memo to

united employees says the faa will now be paying closer attention to the airline. earlier this month, united flight lost a wheel over an sfo parking lot smashing up cars. just this week, a flight from sfo to japan had to turn back because of engine issues, united says the faa will be reviewing the airline's policies and facilities over the next few weeks. new developments tonight in that terrifying mid-air blowout on board a boeing plane. passengers on that flight back in january are getting letters from the fbi saying they may be victims of a crime and that the fbi is investigating. that makes at least four federal investigations into boeing. and the door plug that blasted out of its plane made. >> league baseball has opened a formal investigation into the matter surrounding dodgers superstar shohei ohtani and his former interpreter. the interpreter was fired by the team earlier this week after it was discovered that $4.5 million in wire transfers had been sent from otani's bank account to a

bookmaking operation on ohtani's. handlers initially claimed ohtani paid the interpreters gambling debts, then said ohtani had been the victim of a massive theft. mlb is expected to request interviews with all parties, including ohtani himself. well, the ride over the golden gate bridge is going to cost a little more starting in july. as expected, the board today voted to raise the tolls by $0.50 a year through 2028. on july 1st, it will be 1025 for a two axle vehicle, which pretty much covers all cars and most trucks. if you have fast track, however, it will be a buck less for drivers who have a pay as you go account. the toll will be $9.50. the toll increases are to help cover a projected $220 million deficit over five years. >> people were buying up mega millions tickets earlier today, hoping to hit the nearly $1 billion jackpot. we are about to give you the winning numbers, but we can tell you right now nobody hit that jackpot. tonight's numbers, though, were

a 7-eleven store in san francisco is going viral. it's called onigiri, but there are a couple of wrinkles here first. the store wasn't selling it, and there's no partnership with san francisco mayor london breed. second, they were made by a woman who is hoping to get the convenience store to carry it. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with the creator as well as the store owner, who thinks it's a great idea. >> danielle baskin is walking into this 7-eleven on san francisco's sansome street on a mission, and the mayor's face on a home made japanese snack. >> i recently went to japan, and if you're not familiar with onigiri, it's this very popular rice ball in a triangle shape wrapped in seaweed. and i've just dreamed of this being available everywhere in the us. >> so the artist took matters into her own hands this week, making the snacks at home, complete with packaging. >> why did you want to have the mayor's face on this? yeah, so.

the rice. so then i tell her, if do you have. so send to me. she said, i will try. >> and so danielle is getting to work. >> and so tonight i'm figuring out the logistics with different commercial kitchens to manufacture them. >> and she's hoping to make the delivery as soon as possible. >> but the demand is there. i think people were so excited that this could be a possibility. it's a very good snack. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> today's announcement by the princess of wales that she's battling cancer is on the cover of nearly every uk newspaper and tabloid for saturday. kate middleton is on 16 covers, all but one using an image from her video statement. five headlines focus on kate saying the diagnosis was a huge shock. several other headlines are about the princess saying she will be okay. one highlights kate's message to other cancer patients and another inverts that message, writing to kate that she is not alone now, she

did not share what kind of cancer she has, just that her doctors found it after she had abdominal surgery in january. she says she's starting chemotherapy and says she waited to share the news so she could explain to her children that she would be okay. >> this, of course, came as a huge shock, and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. >> abc seven news sat down today with ucsf breast cancer center director doctor laura esserman. she says she hopes middleton's announcement drives others to assess their risk for cancer. >> if you are at high risk, are you at high risk? for what type of cancer? and there you can adjust what you can do to reduce risk and to screen appropriately . if you're at risk for a fast growing cancer, you need to probably screen earlier and more frequently. >> she says ucsf researchers are focused on how to optimize screenings for people at higher risk of cancer. she recommends

looking into your family history and having a conversation with your doctor. >> the cdc says the number of measles cases across the country this year has already surpassed the total for all of 2023. there's been a total of 64 cases reported in 17 states so far in this new year, compared to 58 all of last year. alameda county health officials reported a possible measles exposure at a brew pub in san leandro earlier this month, but no cases were confirmed. measles symptoms include fever, runny nose or red rash and can appear up to three weeks after exposure. berkeley is going to repeal its ban on natural gas appliances. it would have applied to installations in new buildings, the first of its kind ordinance passed back in 2019 and took effect the following year, with the intent of reducing gas greenhouse gas emissions. however, it was contested by the restaurant association and an appeals court last year said it violated us law. san francisco and other cities have similar laws, and

they could be invalidated as a result of this case. >> beer enthusiasts from around the world are toasting the rollout of a craft beer with a cult following in the north bay. they lined up for a first taste of pliny the younger. the highly anticipated release from the russian river brewing company, owners of the brewery, say it takes six months of planning and tasting to find the perfect pliny recipe. it's a limited edition triple ipa, and once again it is drawing crowds from far and near shares. >> fantastic. >> pliny is just this aroma. the taste is just the best. it's the best. >> this year's version of pliny the younger marks a milestone. it is the 20th anniversary for the beloved brew. >> well, the pliny is flowing and so is the water. thanks to the recent storms, state officials are doubling the amount of water california agencies will get this year. previously, the department of water resources told major contractors to expect 15% of

evening, it's still continuing to progress southward behind it. we've got this area of low pressure that is going to drive some more showers through here. as we head towards your saturday and bring in the potential for some thunderstorms as we look at live doppler seven here locally, i want to get you into the street level radar, where we are seeing some downpours around edenvale santa teresa boulevard. heading into coyote, you will notice the santa cruz mountains getting its share of some wet weather tonight, and we head towards the east bay uh- oakland, san leandro, castro valley getting light to moderate rain. so let's talk about how much rain so far. san francisco almost a half an inch. hitting a half an inch in san jose for a change. a quarter of an inch in oakland. napa 6000/200 in santa rosa and 9000/400 of an inch in ben lomond. we're still counting 40 and 50 on your temperatures, right now. here are some live views from our tower cameras. and this is what you're going to start out your weekend with. some fog. some rain. and in the mountains, zephyr cove showing

[whirring] i was assistant winemaker at a winery called white rock, and that's where you make your road 31 pinot noir. i never made better wine than i did when ryan was on the job when he was there, so, we became fast friends, thought about moving the winery down here, but if you look around, there's these old historic cranes everywhere. and i kept thinking, my wine folks are not gonna wanna look at those cranes, but my brewing buddies, they're gonna be like, check out those cranes. ryan had gone to work for lagunitas. small brewery, little small brewery called lagunitas, yeah. um, and then that, uh, kind of helps understand that maybe beer is where we should go. yeah. so we got back together. i'd read the business plan. ryan had the brewing expertise, and we started up the brewing company based on that.

♪♪ we've taken the parts of the wine world that we think apply, but we've had to learn kind of a new approach. and some of you know, the wine world's fantastic and super fun on one level. -absolutely. and, man, it's sure fun to have a pint on the other level. yeah, it wine world can be and feel a little exclusive. a lot of the retail can make it feel a little stuffy. on beer, everybody can have a fun time on an $8 pint. you really find more opportunities to have, uh, people enjoy your product with beer. i think it really speaks to a sense of community that you can create with a brewery that you can't quite do as much with a winery. we want people to have the whole experience. we want them to have the beer, we want them to have the history, and we want them to have the community gathering, watering hole that we try to provide. and it's that combination that i think makes us special. ♪♪ when we started the vallejo ferry terminal over there, it was a no-brainer that literally the ferry drops off everybody coming from san francisco right at our doorstep. so, opening that place in 2014 really got the ball
