a stormy saturday in the bay area with rain rolling through it. some unsettled weather that made for a rare sighting off the coast at one point. good evening, i'm j.r stone. more on the weather in a moment, but we begin with developing news tonight. a deadly attack in el dorado county. a mountain lion killed one man and injured his brother. they were antler shed hunting in a remote area when the big cat pounced. it happened five miles from the historic town of georgetown, some 50 miles northeast of sacramento. the el dorado county sheriff's office got the 911 call shortly after 1 p.m, hoping for a mountain lion attack. >> the pp will be waiting in his vehicle. also injured will be a

blue honda crv. the attack took place approximately 300 yards north of his vehicle. >> deputies arrived to find an 18 year old with severe facial injuries. minutes later, they saw a mountain lion crouched next to his older brother. the deputies fired to scare off the lion, but the 21 year old was dead. a trapper from the sheriff's office and wardens from california fish and wildlife later captured the lion and killed it. the body is being held for examination. it is unknown if the two brothers were armed as they were looking for antlers. fish and wildlife records show the last fatal encounter with a lion was in 2004, in orange county. storms off the coast today made for a rare sight down in santa cruz. a watersrspout swirling over the ocean. a viewer shared these shots from west cliff drive near whale point. national weather service says this waterspout was part of a weak cell, and in

between all the rain and the storms, we did get some spectacular rainbows in the bay area. this one actually looked more like a double rainbow. it was quite the sight this afternoon. we've seen a little bit of everything today when it comes to the weather. spencer christian joins us now. spencer how is sunday looking? >> not quite so active as today, j.r, but we are still going to have some showers lingering through the day tomorrow. here's a look at live doppler seven. and you can see that right now we've got lots of active weather south of the golden gate, then across the peninsula and over into the east bay. so we've got rain and some steady rain right now in san mateo down into the santa cruz mountains, southward into the palo alto, sunnyvale area, then eastward over towards fremont and then up towards hayward and livermore. so pretty wet in that little sort of semi horseshoe shaped area. this storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale is a level one storm. so through tomorrow morning we expect more periods of light to moderate rainfall, brief isolated downpours, and it will be breezy to gusty at times. here's a forecast

it. other businesses in the area, including a subway and a denny's, have also closed over safety concerns. police in oakland are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting at a gas station. it happened around 545 this morning at the quick serve on east 12th street off of 8-80, police say they found a woman dead there. no details on a suspect tonight or what led up to the shooting. our partners at the bay area news group report it's the third shooting at that gas station in three years. scary moments at a hotel in berkeley. a man walked into the lobby and set the place on fire. police say it happened around 11 a.m. at the aden hotel that's on university avenue and sacramento street. investigators say a man walked in, emptied a gas can on the floor and started the fire. no one was hurt, but the fire damaged that lobby. oakland's new police chief will have a lot of work to do when he comes to the bay area. floyd

mitchell is expected to begin in may. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with advocates about what they believe mitchell's priorities should be. >> reporter a neighborhood day of action in west oakland. volunteers pitching in to clean up parts of 28th street near adeline, organized by grassroots nonprofit community ready corps. >> our belief is, is that it's our job to serve our communities . it's our job to clean up. if the city doesn't do it, we're going to do it. that's why my loyalty is to this crc founder troc says his organization is also committed to making oakland streets safer and preventing crime by investing in community based solutions. >> he hopes oakland's next police chief, floyd mitchell, will share the vision. >> if you do not plant seeds in this soil, the problem will keep going no matter how many police chiefs we have, no matter who's in in the situation. >> what stands out about chief mitchell is that he's a strong leader and he's really smart. he's a really smart crime fighter who delivers results. >> on friday, mayor shang tao

together to solve our situations in oakland. colonel bernard, abc seven news. >> one person went to the hospital after a hazmat incident at merck research labs in south san francisco this morning. it happened when a cleaner was pressure washing outside the building near some nitrogen tanks. a valve broke, releasing liquid nitrogen into the air. all six people at the facility were told to evacuate. they were allowed back once the all clear was given. there's growing concern tonight over the spread of the measles with the united states already topping the total for all of last year. what precautions should you take and what is behind this spike? abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to an infectious disease expert tonight, who said that for some, the disease is easier to get than covid. >> saturday, another case of the measles confirmed this one in an unvaccinated child on long island. we've been seeing vaccinations decline in the united states in general. doctor

peter chin-hong is an infectious disease expert at ucsf and says the drop in vaccination rate is likely fueling the rise in measles cases. >> we dip below 95. that means it can kind of find the cracks and crevices and infect people who are unvaccinated. >> and he says the concern is the pushback against vaccinations could mean measles is just the beginning. >> we were worried that hesitancy around covid vaccines would bleed into other vaccines. and measles, in a sense, is like the canary in the coal mine. >> the measles, he explains, can be easier to get than covid. >> you can walk into a room the patient with measles had already left like a couple hours before, and you can get measles, and it's going to be even easier to get uh- than covid. >> and if your spring break plans are taking you abroad, the doctor has this message. >> the biggest threat right now is if you're planning a trip abroad, because you know europe and other parts of the world,

attempting to create confusion and prevent solano county voters from deciding their future. opponents accused california forever of empty promises that cannot be legally enforced. hundreds of people spent their saturday walking nearly two dozen miles through the east bay as part of a protest calling for a ceasefire in the israel-hamas war. religious leaders across different faiths led the walk. they started in berkeley and ended the night in alameda. its 22 miles the same distance people in gaza are walking to reach safety in rafah. >> this is a way for the faith community to say we believe in prayer. we believe in community. we believe in the sacredness of all human beings. so let's come together and let's pray together and let's stand together to demand something better. >> today, the united nations secretary general called the starvation inside gaza a moral outrage and called for more humanitarian aid for that territory. as rallies across the

breezy to gusty at times. here's a forecast animation starting at midnight. notice after midnight again scattered showers will be the pattern. there'll be lots of periods of no rainfall at all, hitting much of the bay area. a lot of activity offshore, so showers along the coastline and then by about noon tomorrow, looks like most of the area will start to see some sunshine. but in the afternoon some showers will run down along the higher elevations of the east bay hills and down into the mount hamilton area. before it's all over. once it's all over, rainfall totals across the bay area will be generally under a quarter of an inch. a little bit more at fremont, which will have just over a half inch of rain tomorrow. and in the sierra, it is snowing now. in fact, a winter storm warning in effect for the western slopes until 5 a.m. tomorrow at elevations of 6 to 7000ft, we expect 1 to 2ft of additional snowfall to accumulate in the greater lake tahoe area. it's a winter weather advisory where we expect lower rainfall out. a snowfall totals, i should say. okay,

current conditions here in the bay area right now. breezy but not gusty, except in oakland where we've got 30 mile per hour gusts at the moment. and as we look out over san francisco, these are our current temperature readings, low to mid 50s at san francisco, oakland, hayward, san jose, san mateo, half moon bay and looking at the golden gate bridge where the pavement looks damp and it doesn't appear to be raining there, right now. all the temperature readings of 46 at petaluma and then low 50s at santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. overnight lows under partly showery conditions, mainly mid to upper 40s. high temperatures tomorrow will be generally in the low 60s as the showers wind down in the afternoon hours, giving way to at least partly sunny skies. here's the accuweather seven day forecast after this level one system winds down tomorrow. we expect mostly cloudy and dry weather on monday, sunnier and milder on tuesday, and then we get another series of light systems coming in level one storms wednesday, thursday and friday, bringing mainly light rainfall but rain nonetheless.

33 people have died after that attack. at a concert. the terrorist group isis has claimed responsibility and police have now arrested four suspects. abc news reporter reena roy has the story. >> gunfire erupting at a concert venue in moscow friday in the city's deadliest terror attack in two decades. the violence broke out as fans were waiting for a russian rock band to take the stage at crocus city concert hall. hundreds sheltering behind seats and running for the exits. you can see the gunman armed with assault rifles. the building then engulfed by fire, helicopters dropping water on the massive flames. russian

mall are doing what they love at the point reyes national seashore, but they likely didn't expect to see or smell so much garbage. most every dumpster across the 71,000 acre gem is full of trash. >> really, the biggest concern was, you know, we get some wind out here and the concern was if the lids fly open, then trash can blow around. >> some dumpsters have signs posted. leave no trash, no collection services available. trash is piling up here because they have no way to get rid of it. national park service has only one trash truck for the entire seashore, and it broke down weeks ago. >> that is very surprising that they only have one trash truck. absolutely. >> rangers say some of the trash has been transported off site, but most of it is sitting in stinking in this lot, waiting to be hauled away. repairing the trash truck could take a while. and why is it taking so long to fix the truck, well, the repairs are pretty extensive. and, because, you know, we're using

federal dollars to, repair this, this truck, we have to go through a specific process. >> hervey says in the meantime, the national seashore is asking something unusual from every visitor. take your trash home. >> it would help us a lot if visitors could kind of, you know , share the burden with us. by. by, by taking home whatever they bring to the seashore. >> that request is posted on the park's website. hikers and campers say they are happy to oblige. >> i would never leave my trash on the trails, and it will probably come back with me and go back into my car and then head back to berkeley by the way, rangers say the trash truck could take about two weeks to repair. >> yeah, let's not trash the park like always, regardless of the condition of our garbage truck at point reyes. >> cornell. bernard abc seven news. >> spencer christian joins us now. you know, you would think they'd be able to find one garbage truck in one city, across the bay, across the state
