chief of lubbock, texas, and will start in early may, making it far more than a year that oakland has sat without a chief. but today, a focus from some in oakland about police use of force cases at large. we begin with abc seven news reporter ryan curry, who was at a daytime vigil calling for racial and social justice. >> this together we can raise our voices and demand justice for those who have been silenced . >> demanding change. no longer does this group want to see disabled people of color killed by police, by fighting for a future where every individual is valued, respected. on march 9th, san bernardino sheriff deputies shot and killed 15 year old ryan gainer. he had been acting out that afternoon and a family member called 911. ryan was autistic. body camera video shows ryan charging at a deputy carrying a gardening hoe. those deputies began shooting in oakland sunday. activists held a vigil for him and other victims of police violence. they want one thing police to stop

responding to a mental health crisis. >> we're calling for us to decriminalize mental health care, right? we're calling we're calling for us to decriminalize autism, right? because people are neurodivergent. it's not a death sentence. >> ryan's family now have an attorney and will possibly sue the county. >> guess who had to tell my sister that her baby was dead? >> i did his case, especially hits home for tom hall. walnut creek police killed her son, miles, in 2019 while he was experiencing a mental health issue. >> well, you know, it's very similar to miles. miles had a garden tool. miles thought he was, you know, a, he had the staff from god, you know, he was in a mental health emergency. so was ryan. ryan was autistic. you know, all he needed was help. she is calling for the need of trained mental health professionals who can respond to these calls. >> she believes her son and ryan should still be alive when something is a medical condition, which is autism and mental health. >> we shouldn't rely on police to come and be the first responders. >> a new police chief is ready

allowing women to take it ten weeks into pregnancy. >> the lower court of appeals, uh, essentially rescinded some power in earlier regulations of the food and drug administration petitioners, the fda, the biden administration. others are arguing that that is unconstitutional. >> margaret russell is a constitutional law expert at santa clara university, and she says the ruling could have a much farther reach than this one drug impact, not just on this particular medication, but potentially the power of the food and drug administration in other areas that would be of benefit to the health of women and everyone. >> she also says a big part of this case will be whether it should have even been filed, whether or not the, the alliance of anti-abortion doctors actually has what's called standing. are they even injured by the operation of the circulation of this, this medication in a way that would allow them to bring suit?

attack and el dorado county fish and wildlife teams have confirmed the animal was a healthy male weighing 90 pounds, and those teams confirm they have since killed the same big cat. wildlife teams say the animal attacked two brothers yesterday afternoon, killing one yebeen released. the brothers were searchi for shed deer antlers near the townf georgetown, about 50 miles northeast of sacramento in the er foothills. deputies say the 18 year old, whourvived, has already gone through several surgeries after being attacked and is expected to make a full recovery. abc news reporter

zohreen shah has more on the shocking call. >> we got a report of a subject attacked by a mountain lion. code three fire and medical are in route now. >> a weekend outing for two brothers in northern california taking a horrific turn after the el dorado county sheriff's department says a mountain lion attacked, killing one of the men and leaving the other one with traumatic injuries to the face. >> medical is with the first patient, 18 year old male, who last saw his brother, a 21 year old male, pinned down by the mountain lion, the attack unfolding saturday afternoon while the brothers ages 21 and 18, were searching for shed deer antlers near the el dorado national forest, about 52 miles northeast of sacramento. >> deputies say the 21 year old was found dead with a mountain lion nearby 30 minutes after his brother called 911. the mountain lion was facing the deputies and in an attempt to get to the individual to render first aid,

time, the fraudsters have fixed the spelling and grammatical errors in the texts, making them look a bit more convincing. the mtc says fast track will never text you, demanding payment, but if you do happen to respond by mistake, contact your credit card issuer or bank immediately. the commission believes an international fraud ring may be behind this ploy. tonight, the prince and princess of wales say they're extremely moved by the public's support after kate middleton's shocking cancer announcement, princess kate announced her cancer diagnosis on friday. in a video to her supporters as she received the news following an abdominal surgery which found cancer had been present. it comes after months of speculation on the princess's whereabouts. while she remained out of the public eye. kensington palace released this statement from the royal couple, saying and quote, they are extremely moved by the public's warmth and support and are grateful for the understanding of their request

for privacy. at this time. over in the north bay, a new public health dashboard highlights health equity across the area. marin county's public health division created the online feature. it shows certain disparities among residents to help address the health of its minority communities. the dashboard includes four zones with various health subjects such as life expectancy, mental health, overdose, and heart disease. you can click on each zone and select the subject to see the impact on residents in that area. a severe geomagnetic storm is currently hitting the earth. it means the northern lights might show up in some unusual parts of the world tomorrow. that's according to the space weather prediction center. experts say due to the sun's plasma explosion reaching earth, it changes where the northern lights shine. people located in the northern hemisphere have a high chance of catching the extra ordinary view. however, it's not likely

trouble in the skies. and tonight the faa is taking a closer look. united airlines, one of the largest in the nation, is under renewed scrutiny after a series of widely shared mishaps, including the fallen plane tire here at sfo, according to bloomberg. the faa is now considering limiting united's routes. abc news reporter faith abubey is in atlanta with more at these potential restrictions would be substantial and effectively keep united airlines from expanding its business, at least in the

5:00 yesterday at the stop at fulton street and park presidio boulevard. that's right across the street from golden gate park. ironically enough, the car ended up on top of a yield to pedestrians sign. one man was hurt, but he's expected to be okay. the driver is facing several citations. the crash comes just one week after a driver plowed through a bus stop in san francisco's west portal neighborhood, taking out a whole family. a couple and their two young children were waiting to go to the zoo when police say a 78 year-old driver hit them. kids were just two years old and three months old. the driver is not in police custody at this point, and the da's office has not formally charged her. so we're not naming her right now. we're learning new details today about a shooting death involving officers in sunnyvale. police say they were called to a mobile home park on vienna drive yesterday for reports of a man with knife. they say they came

swirling jars in what's essentially a giant starfish nursery, feeding and raising tiny larvae too small for the eye to see. >> we have several million on both of these tables total. >> the nursery at the california academy of sciences is part of a multi-site project to rescue a species known as the sunflower sea star from near extinction. to understand the urgency, all you need to do is stroll along our coastline. that's where evans colleague rebecca johnson helped document the sunflower star's disappearance. more than a decade ago, likely triggered by a severe marine heatwave and disease. >> they were particularly hard hit, especially here in california, and they really haven't made a recovery much easier to see is the environmental chain reaction, the vanishing sea stars normally prey on purple sea urchins, whose population quickly exploded. >> that was deadly news for local kelp forests. the next rung down on the food chain for the hungry urchins.

>> so urchins eat kelp. and so the loss of the urchin predator has released the urchins and allowed their population to grow. and for them to eat tons of kelp, contributing to a decline of kelp forests along our northern california coast. >> the damage to the kelp forests and surrounding ecosystem is so significant, scientists decided to bolster the sunflower star population in captivity. >> for now, it's crazy that these guys are going to grow up to be these keystone apex predators, but they will, she says. >> a team of researchers, including the birch aquarium at scripps institution of oceanography near san diego, are working to raise the sea star's first capturing sperme and eggs from a limited number already in captivity. because the tiny larvae go through dramatic changes before they become sea stars, raising them is a tricky process, and then they'll go through a complete metamorphosis and they'll settle down to the bottom of the ocean or the bottom of my tables, and they'll actually start looking like a

sea star at that point, their diet changes completely, and any decision to reintroduce stars back into the ocean would also be tricky and probably decades away. but the debate is becoming familiar. there are already proposals to restore native sea otters that vanished from our coasts after being hunted nearly to extinction, while labs like the academy are also working with genetic variations of coral that could someday be used to repopulate coral reefs devastated by climate change. as for the stars, well, this is $1 million question. >> there are lots of regulatory hurdles and lots of things that would have to happen for that to be possible. but the hope is to increase the genetic diversity of the things that we're holding in human care. and to have as many individuals in as many places to protect the species as we get toward being able to reintroduce them. >> so for now, the spatulas continue to swirl and researchers continue to experiment with diet and environment. preparing for the
