some drops already. as you see, it will be a familiar sight over the next few days. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. you know, they say march comes in like a lion and out goes out like a lamb, but it's going out like a lion. >> two it is a good stretch of rain is in the forecast and we are starting to see the first part of it right now. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking what we're seeing out there tonight and what's coming. cindy. yeah, and dan and it's beneficial. >> rain and definitely slow going on the roadways as it is slippery. so let's look at live doppler seven. it looks more like winter than spring. right now we are seeing some pockets of downpours as we get you first into the fairfield area across highway 12. they're seeing some light showers from san francisco down the peninsula, brisbane, bayshore, san bruno seeing some pockets of heavier rain, and from milpitas out towards the alum rock area or down towards the alum rock area. and santa cruz mountains. also seeing that wet weather, this is a light level one storm and it is going to continue to produce that wet

weather as the night goes on. here's a look at the hourly forecast. midnight. it's in the east bay and the south bay. tomorrow morning's commute will include spotty showers, so plan accordingly. there will be pockets of fog and poor visibility as we are seeing right now. winds 36 miles an hour at spring valley, 32 on mount diablo. and this is just the start of what's to come. so this is a level one. we're looking at. rain, brief downpours, breezy to gusty slick roadways and low visibility. there's a stronger storm on the way. i'll be back with those details coming right up dana okay sandy, thanks a lot. >> there is some serious tension building before the oakland a's opening day game. >> yeah, it's not so much to do with their hopes for the new season. fans are once again planning a major boycott and choosing not to attend. >> that's part of their long running push back over the team's potential move to vegas tonight, abc seven news reporter tara campbell is hearing how some feel the team isn't playing fair with their parking lot protest. >> now they've done it more than once and they're ready to do it again. >> angry a's fans set to protest

thursday as the team kicks off what could be its last season in oakland to make a statement on the largest scale on the biggest game of the year, which is opening day. brian johansen is the founder of last dive bar, the a's fan group, leading what's being called the summer of boycott. and he says the goal is simple to show that there is support. >> there's going to be 20,000 people strong in that parking lot. so it's to send a message and send a statement that the fans are here. the fans organize this. >> and he says it's a chance for fans to get out and have some fun without actually going to the game. >> you can have multiple tailgates going off. we'll have a centralized like boycott little uh- area where we're going to have games. we're going to have be giving away 5000 sell flags, 1000 boycott uh- themed pins, we have food vendors that are showing up, but amid all the festivities is also some concern. >> the a's deciding not to open the parking lot until just two hours before the game this year, when they announced a much later opening time.

>> there's been a lot of community concern about whether there would be backups, about whether it would cause congestion and pollution and harmful impacts on the surrounding communities, oakland vice mayor rebecca kaplan taking to social media to express her concern and taking it to the a's. we have asked that the a's should open earlier, just like they did last year, in order to ensure that the community is well served. we have not yet heard a response, and we also know that many in the community are making that same request. >> we also reached out to mayor sheng tao's office, asking about plans to control traffic and keep the community safe. in a statement, the mayor, responding in part, i'm proud of the a's fans efforts to demonstrate to the baseball world that professional baseball belongs in oakland. meanwhile, fans are hoping the a's organization will play ball and open the parking lot earlier. >> but as of right now, it's 5 p.m. and if it's 5 p.m, then that's when we go in and that's when it starts. and we'll be doing it all game long through, you know? and we're hoping for

extra innings so we can just keep the party going all night long. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> new details out of south florida about a west point cadet from the bay area. police say the 21 year-old died in an apparent accidental drowning. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is here in studio with this new information coming in. >> j.r. i'mmahave and maurice was from pleasanton, but was a west point cadet on leave in florida. fort lauderdale police say he was on spring break. he was last seen this past weekend in the overnight hours saturday, going into sunday in an area of downtown fort lauderdale known for its many bars and late night parties. at that time, he had a blue polo on with khaki pants. sadly, the fort lauderdale police spokesperson told the miami herald that a dive team pulled his body out of a river. in a press release, west point says that his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected. the downtown area he was in is only a block or so away from the new river. on social media, a woman

named melissa said she was his former boss at kfc. she wrote haven was one of the most amazing young men i ever had. worked for me. so funny, outgoing and smart. he brought smiles to everyone around him. another person wrote had the pleasure of having him at my house many times, such a wonderful young man. haven attended amador valley high school in pleasanton, the school tells us. our hearts go out to the maurice family. at this point, it is unclear how he got to the river, if he was swimming with friends and if drugs or alcohol were involved. i have reached out to fort lauderdale police but have not yet heard back. i did talk with the woman named melissa, his former boss, a little while ago this evening. she tells me haven was the life of the party and his laugh was contagious. she says their former crew at kfc is grieving together. j.r. stone, abc seven news. yes. >> certainly are. thank you. j.r. >> while developing news tonight with a deadly bridge collapse in

baltimore, divers recovered two bodies today from the wreckage, but four more remain unaccounted for. all of the victims are construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed. the ntsb got its investigation going today and boarded the cargo ship for the first time. >> it shared videos of its investigators looking around and putting up a drone to survey the scene. they also brought in experts to evaluate the cargo and quickly discovered a potential environmental issue. >> he was able to identify 56 containers of hazardous materials. uh- that's 764 tons of hazardous materials, some of the hazmat containers were breached. we have seen shear on or sheen. sorry, sheen on the waterway. >> the ntsb is already looking at the data recorder to figure out what went wrong. investigators say the ship's alarms went off at 124 yesterday morning and it crashed into the francis scott key bridge five

minutes later. back here at home, oakland's new police chief pledges to bring change. >> floyd mitchell was introduced today as the city's 13th chief in the last 20 years. he says his approach is centered on data driven, proactive policing and building a close partnership with the community. >> my approach begins with strong community engagement and collaboration. i'm here to work with the citizens of oakland. >> he's a smart crime fighter who delivers results, and it is what i demand. >> mitchell spent more than 20 years on the police force in kansas city. he then went on to serve as police chief in temple, texas, and lubbock. after that, he's expected to start his job in oakland in late april or early may. >> chief mitchell will face his fair share of issues when he takes the helm. abc seven news insider phil matier joined us on getting answers today at 3 p.m. to lay out some of those challenges, as the emphasis is going to be on public safety and that means more police on the streets. >> the question is whether

oakland even has the money right now to put more police on the street in the numbers that may be needed up to a 90 police officers are up for retirement this year. they've only got 700 officers, and the recruiting classes aren't going to match that. so not only is he going to be have possibly fewer patrol officers, but also some of the command staff is looking at the door as well. this is not a great time to become oakland's new police chief. there are a lot of challenges, not the least of which is the politics of oakland, which have never stopped rumbling or never know unexpectedly what might happen. >> and phil believes mitchell is making a good first impression and says a key to his success will be connecting with everyday neighbors. >> an update now to this dramatic pursuit that started in napa and ended with a crash near lake merritt in oakland on monday. we know that four people were arrested, but police also recovered a bunch of merchandise that was just scattered all over the street. here's a new photo. police say all this was taken

from a lululemon store in napa and initially valued at about $2,500, but investigators actually recovered more than 200 stolen pairs of clothing and revised the value to roughly $23,000. >> new at 11 the easter week is upon us, and it means it's time to get the baskets ready. the national retail federation says americans will spend an average of $180 per person on easter related things this year, most of it candy and food. so from easter eggs to the easter bunny and even that easter day brunch tonight, abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us how the south bay is getting ready. >> restaurants are looking forward to the easter brunch crowd this weekend. >> usually we can always expect like double the amount of people coming in. for me, what i enjoy is more all the families are coming together, manager benjamin palestro, at the table in san jose, says groups of friends and family come in waves from church. everyone's hungry at that point and we just get flooded all at one time.

girl scout troops are picking up on it, and it is forcing the secret service to step in. someone is taking advantage of kids in solano county by passing fake money to buy girl scout cookies. can you believe this? it's awful. >> well, it happened three times last month. each time it involved the person giving the scouts a counterfeit $100 bill. fairfield police say usually the goal of the scammer is not so much the cookies, obviously, but to get cash in return. investigators say it happened twice in lowes parking lots in the third time was in front of a peet's coffee. >> what's heartbreaking? these are children, you know, we're taking advantage of our children, and so in both cases, you know, the person came across as extremely genuine. it's just wanting to support the girl scout troops. >> i mean, really ripping off the girl scouts. one of the troops was victimized last year as well because counterfeit money was used. however, the secret service is also investigating former vice presidential nominee and senator joe lieberman has died at the age of 82. >> his family announced today.

he passed away in new york city from complications from a fall. lieberman served as a senator from connecticut from 1989 to 2013. he was the first orthodox jewish senator in u.s. history. he was also al gore's running mate on the democratic ticket. in 2000. lieberman later became an independent and was founding chair of the no labels party. his funeral will be held friday in his hometown of stamford, connecticut. >> happening tomorrow. bay area native sam bankman-fried will be sentenced for what prosecutors call one of the biggest financial frauds in american history. bankman fried is the former ceo of the cryptocurrency platform ftx. a jury convicted him in november on charges of wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy and conspiracy to commit money laundering. prosecutors say more than $8 billion of customer money was misappropriated, and bankman-fried faces between 40 and 50 years in prison. >> billion dollar lottery jackpots are starting to become

the norm, and after tonight's powerball drawing, we might be in for another one. no tickets matched all six of tonight's powerball numbers. here they are, 37, 46, 57, 60, 66 and the bonus number eight. no winner. tonight means the jackpot will roll over once again, and could push the pot for saturday's drawing to about a billion dollars. well, some old tennis courts are new once again. after a grand reopening today in san francisco, the city unveiled the newly resurfaced bayview hunters point tennis courts. the courts have been shut down and their future uncertain for several years now. they will be used by youth tennis advantage, one of the country's oldest inner city youth tennis programs. i really want to express my appreciation for the san franciscans, for sports and recreation and the us tennis association foundation for raising all of the money to help resurface this tennis courts. the courts were originally opened back in 1987

with support from tennis legend arthur ashe, who dedicated the courts when they were first opened. the makeover was partly paid for using fees from a real estate deal that never happened. a planned 1,000,000 square foot campus at the site of bay club in soma. the project stalled because of economic challenges brought on by the pandemic. that's nice. >> well, tomorrow we see the long awaited arrival of an american rock legend and icon, bruce springsteen, and the e street band are in town. the megastar plays san francisco's chase center tomorrow and sunday night, a part of the north american leg of his tour to honor his arrival, chase center created the special street signs on warriors way and in thrive city. check it out. just a hint, by the way, we've noticed tickets for the upper deck tomorrow are selling as low as $70 on some resale websites. if you want to go check him out, you can get in. the boss is back. >> i think we can get the time

off real quick. what we should try we should. all right, let's check on our weather. that rain is coming down again. >> boy, it poured some tonight. morse coming. abc seven news meteorologist sanjay patel is here. sandy. >> yeah, and dan and i want to show you some live pictures tonight. we are seeing some brief downpours as we look from golden gate bridge to exploratorium to emeryville. it is pretty much slippery roadways that you're looking at. and check out zephyr cove. the snow is coming down. so let's look at live doppler seven. we are tracking some pockets of moderate to heavy rain in the east bay right now from alameda to oakland, heading across into the peninsula area from main street in half moon bay to woodacre, portola valley. so watch out if you do have to head out on the roadways. we do have an active pattern out there. a stronger storm is coming in on friday and it's going to stick around for part of your weekend rainfall. so far, 4000/300 in santa rosa, 14 hundredths in san francisco. so less than that from oakland to redwood city to concord. trace amounts in san jose. but kentfield has picked up over an inch of rain, so it

has been coming in pretty good in some areas. half moon bay visibility down to two miles. the fog is around as well, so something you'll need to watch out for 40s and 50s on your temperatures right now. and here's a view that looks more like winter from zephyr cove, where the snow is coming in the statewide snow pack is just above 100% of average, and this is just going to add some thunderstorms to our north. you will notice that sierra is getting that snow right now. chain controls on all roads except 80 at this hour. but it is a mix of rain and snow depending on elevation. winter storm warning until 11 a.m. tomorrow. up to 30in for the peaks. gusts to 50 miles an hour, and that means travel could be difficult. uh. here's a look at the headlines. rain and areas of fog. you saw that on the exploratorium camera friday. a stronger level two storm comes in with thunderstorm forms, and on easter, there's a possibility of a lingering isolated shower. chance or two. it's a one for tonight. rain brief downpours, breezy to gusty, slick roads and low visibility. looking at the

timeline here, east bay and parts of the south bay at midnight still wet 4 a.m. could see a few high elevation flurries to our north and then really just scattered showers at 10 a.m. really spotty for the afternoon hours. as we head into 5 p.m, this system starts to wind down and then it is done. but there's another storm coming. so additional rainfall we're talking about anywhere from a few hundredths to about 4000/300 in ben lomond. your morning temperatures in the 30s to 50s. you'll need a jacket. carry those umbrellas and you'll need those shades, as there will be some sun breaks in the afternoon. 50s and 60s on your highs. thunderstorm chance goes way up on friday for the entire bay area, and so do the winds. it's going to get gustier. you will notice in the afternoon over 35 mile an hour winds out of the south. this continues well into the evening as that stronger storm comes in. here it goes friday morning. it heads towards southern california, but a lot of rain. southern california is getting over three inches in some areas now. there
