facing. >> gloria, good morning. kumasi. sam bankman-fried was found guilty of seven charges in connection with the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange that he founded, ftx, and today he'll find out how he'll be punished for it. freed became a billionaire at the age of 30, hiring celebrities to hype his exchange. ftx a collapsed in late 2022. he siphoned billions in customer funds from ftx to keep his privately controlled hedge fund afloat. prosecutors say he gambled repeatedly with other people's money in the tune of $8 billion dollars. he faces between 40 and 50 years in prison. but his lawyers are requesting no more than six years. they say this interview with george stephanopoulos is proof that he's already accepted responsibility. >> but you're ultimately responsible and ultimately, absolutely. >> like i look, i should have been on top of this, and i feel really, really bad and regretful that i wasn't. and a lot of

people got hurt and that that's on me. >> the son of two stanford law professors, bankman-fried was born on the campus of stanford university defense attorneys say he is quirky, not conniving, and will say he deserves a chance to become a humanitarian and a philanthropist. the sentencing is scheduled for today in manhattan. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news kumasi. >> thank you. gloria. a sentencing hearing for the man who attacked paul pelosi with a hammer has been delayed. david pappas found guilty of assault and attempted kidnaping charges in federal court last year. he was supposed to be sentenced next month, but a judge rescheduled that hearing for may 22nd day. pappas, facing up to 50 years in prison, also facing state charges. the original sentencing hearing for the federal case conflicted with his state trial. that one has not started. new details in the deadly bridge collapse in the last 30 minutes, we've learned the names of two more of the victims in that tragedy.

>> divers recovered two bodies yesterday from the wreckage. but for more remain unaccounted for. all the victims are construction workers who were on that bridge when it fell. investigators with the ntsb finally boarded the cargo ship stuck in the bay. the agency shared videos of its investigators looking around and putting up a drone to survey the scene. they also brought in experts to evaluate the cargo and quickly discovered a potential environmental issue. >> he was able to identify 56 containers of hazardous materials. uh- that's 764 tons of hazardous materials, some of the hazmat containers were breached. we have seen shear on or sheen, sorry, sheen on the waterway. >> the ntsb says the bridge was inspected in may of last year and was in satisfactory condition. getting the port of baltimore open remains a priority right now. ships aren't

allowed to go in and out of what is one of the busiest ports in the country. you can stay with us for the very latest on the baltimore bridge aftermath and investigation. we have live updates running anytime at abc seven news.com. >> oakland's new police chief is pledging to bring change to the city. the mayor introduced floyd mitchell to the city yesterday. he will be the city's 13th chief in the past 20 years. he says his approach is centered on data driven, proactive policing. he also values building a close relationship with the community. >> my approach begins with strong community engagement and collaboration. i'm here to work with the citizens of oakland. >> he's a smart crime fighter who delivers results, and it is what i demand. >> mitchell spent more than 20 years on the police force in kansas city. he then went on to serve as police chief in temple, texas, and then lubbock, texas. after that, he's expected to start his job as oakland's chief of police in late april or early may. well, chief mitchell will

be facing his fair share of issues when he takes the helm. abc seven news insider phil matier joined us on our show, getting answers at 3 p.m. to lay out some of those challenges. >> the emphasis is going to be on public safety, and that means more police on the streets. the question is whether oakland even has the money right now to put more police on the street in the numbers that may be needed, up to a 90 police officers are up for retirement this year. they've only got 700 officers and the recruiting classes aren't going to match that. so not only is he going to be have possibly fewer patrol officers, but also some of the command staff is looking at the door as well. this is not a great time to become oakland's new police chief. there are a lot of challenges, not the least of which is the politics of oakland, which have never stopped rumbling or never know unexpectedly what might happen. >> mateer believes mitchell is making a good first impression. he says a key to his success will be connecting with everyday neighbors.

>> daly city is celebrating the completion of a $2 million pedestrian safety improvement project. the safe routes to school project took over south park plaza drive between benjamin franklin intermediate school and garden village elementary school. the improvements include raised crosswalks, brighter signs with flashing lights, more visible stripes on the road, and ada compliant curb ramps. there are also green markers painted on the street to indicate bicycle traffic. the goal is to get people to slow down. >> this is an investment not only in our kids, but it's an investment in our community and infrastructure where this will save lives. >> san mateo county supervisor david canepa has also working to reduce the speed limit to 15mph. when school is in session. >> the bay view hunters point tennis courts in san francisco are back open. >> for a few years now, they've been shut down and the future has been uncertain. well, now

they'll be used by youth tennis advantage, one of the country's oldest inner city youth tennis programs. >> i really want to express my appreciation for the san franciscans for sports and recreation and the us tennis association foundation for raising all of the money to help resurface this tennis courts. >> the courts date back to 1987, with support from tennis legend arthur ashe. the makeover was partly paid for using fees from a real estate deal that never happened. a plan 1,000,000 square foot campus at the site of the bay club in soma. that project stalled due to economic challenges brought on by the pandemic. girl scout cookies a mainstay this time of year, but some north bay scammers may be targeting the troops that are selling them, and amanda is live with how these thieves are taking advantage of children. >> yeah, kumasi what they're doing is using counterfeit money to buy girl scout cookies. >> there are multiple reports of it happening in solano county

three times last month, and each time it involved a person giving the scouts a counterfeit $100 bill. the group impacted say they didn't realize the bills were fake until they got a notice from their bank. fairfield police say usually the goal of the scammer is to get cash in return. investigators say it happened twice in lowes parking lots, and the third time was in front of a peet's coffee shop. >> it's heartbreaking. these are children, you know, we're taking advantage of our children, and so in both cases, you know, the person came across as extremely genuine. it's just wanting to support the girl scout troops. >> one of the same troops was victimized last year as well, which is just awful. and because counterfeit money was used, the secret service is also investigating. back to the desk. >> hey, amanda. i'll take it from here. we're going outside the golden gate bridge. we do have some damp roads this morning, but we're behind a cold front that brought us some light showers the last 24 hours

season on the road against the san diego padres. first pitch 110 today. then they come back to oracle park for the home opener, which is on friday, april fifth. now, the a's will be at the coliseum for their home opener against the cleveland guardians tonight. first pitch is at 707 and the team is giving out magnet schedules to fans who are going to be at that game. the city of oakland is raising some serious concern over tension ahead of the a's home opener today, not so much with their hopes for the new season, fans are once again planning a major boycott and choosing not to attend. >> it's part of their long running pushback over the team's potential move to vegas. abc7 news reporter tara campbell is hearing how some feel the team isn't playing fair with their parking lot protests. >> they've done it more than once and they're ready to do it again. angry a's fans set to protest thursday as the team kicks off what could be its last season in oakland to make a

statement on the largest scale on the biggest game of the year, which is opening day. brian johansen is the founder of last dive bar. the a's fan group, leading what's being called the summer of boycott and he says the goal is simple to show that there is support. >> there's going to be 20,000 people strong in that parking lot. so it's to send a message and send a statement that the fans are here, the fans organize this. >> and he says it's a chance for fans to get out and have some fun without actually going to the game. >> you can have multiple tailgates going off. we'll have a centralized like boycott little uh- area where we're going to have games. we're going to have be giving away 5000 sell flags, 1000 boycott uh- themed pins, we have food vendors that are showing up, but amid all the festivities is also some concern. >> the a's deciding not to open the parking lot until just two hours before the game this year, when they announced a much later opening time. >> there's been a lot of community concern about whether there would be backups about

two workers. four remain missing, four of the six workers have now been identified. today, the ntsb is going to be interviewing the two pilots of the cargo ship that crashed into the bridge. abc news reporter perry russom is live in baltimore again with more on that investigation. hi, perry. >> hey, reggie. state police are describing a terrifying situation for the men who were killed. two were found trapped in their truck underwater for. >> we're now moving from a recovery mode to a salvage operation. >> maryland state police say the divers have to wait for the rubble to be cleared before they can find the missing. the area they're trying to get to is fully enclosed by concrete and metal. yesterday, divers recovering the bodies of alejandro hernandez fuentes and dorian cabrera, divers located red pickup truck submerged in approximately 25ft of water. >> divers recovered two victims of this tragedy trapped within the vehicle. >> among the four still missing and presumed dead are miguel

luna from el salvador, a father of three, and minor. suazo sandoval from honduras, a father of two. >> minor and miguel are just two stories. two specific examples of thousands of thousands of baltimoreans that are making a contribution to this beautiful country. >> the ntsb says new information from a data recorder on dolly shows at 126 in the morning, the pilot calls for tugboats. at 127, the pilot reports they lost all power and are getting close to the bridge. 129 sounds can be heard consistent with a collision. new video shows how crucial that communication was. traffic cleared from the bridge just moments before dolly comes into view. is it clear what's in the cargo on that ship? >> we do have the manifest out of the ship. i have not reviewed it, but we do have the manifest and we know that dot's hazmat team is also on scene. >> the coast guard says 56 cargo containers on board have hazardous materials even though they're hazardous, we've

the live desk with what we know, amanda reggie haven morris was from pleasanton and was west point cadet on leave in florida. >> fort lauderdale police say he was on spring break and was last seen over the weekend. during the overnight hours saturday going into sunday, a fort lauderdale police spokesperson told the miami herald that a dive team pulled his body out of a river. in a press release, west point says his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected. the downtown area he was in is only a block or so away from the new river. on social media, a woman named melissa replied to our story, claiming to be his former employer. she wrote, quote, haven was one of the most amazing young men i ever had. worked for me. so funny, outgoing and smart. he brought smiles to everyone around him. another person wrote i had the pleasure of having him at my house many times. such a wonderful young man. haven attended amador valley high school in pleasanton. pleasanton. excuse me, the school tells abc seven. our
