sam bankman-fried was found guilty of seven charges in connection with a collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange that he founded, ftx and today he'll find out how he'll be punished for it. freed became a billionaire at the age of 30, hiring celebrities to hype his exchange, ftx. it collapsed in late 2022. he siphoned billions in customer funds from ftx to keep his privately controlled hedge fund afloat. prosecutors say he gambled, repeated with other people's money in the tune of $8 billion, and he faces between 40 and 50 years in prison. but his lawyers are requesting no more than six years. and they say this interview with george stephanopoulos is proof that he's already accepted responsibility. >> but you're ultimately responsible and ultimately, absolutely. >> like, i look, i should have been on top of this, and i feel really, really bad and regretful that i wasn't. and a lot of people got hurt and that that's

on me. >> the son of two stanford law professors, bankman-fried was born on the campus of stanford university. defense attorneys say he is quirky, not conniving, and will say he deserves a chance to become a humanitarian and philanthropist. the sentencing is scheduled for today in manhattan. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news kumasi. >> thank you gloria. a sentencing hearing for the man who attacked paul pelosi with a hammer is delayed. david depape was found guilty of assault and attempted kidnaping charges in federal court last year. he was supposed to be sentenced next month, but a judge rescheduled that hearing for may 22nd day. pappas, facing up to 50 years in prison. he's also facing state charges. the original sentencing hearing for the federal case conflicted with his state trial, which has not started yet. >> developing news in the deadly bridge collapse in baltimore, divers recovered two bodies yesterday from the wreckage for more remain unaccounted for, and

four of the victims have now been identified. all the victims are construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed. investigators with the ntsb finally boarded the cargo ship, which is still stuck in the bay. the or in the river, i should say. the agency shared videos of its investigators looking around and putting up a drone to survey the scene. they also brought in experts to evaluate the cargo and quickly discovered a potential environmental issue. >> he was able to identify 56 containers of hazardous materials. uh- that's 764 tons of hazardous materials. some of the hazmat containers were breached. we have seen shear on or sheen, sorry, sheen on the waterway. >> the ntsb says the bridge was inspected in may of last year. it was in satisfactory condition getting the port of baltimore open remains a priority right now. ships aren't allowed to go in and out of what is one of the

busiest ports in the country. the search for the remaining bodies will continue once debris from the area can be cleared. you can stay with us for the very latest on the baltimore bridge aftermath and investigation. we have live updates running anytime at abc seven news.com. >> oakland's new police chief is pledging to bring change to the city. the mayor introduced floyd mitchell to the city yesterday. he'll be the city's 13th chief in the past 20 years. he says his approach is centered on data driven, proactive policing. he also values building a close relationship with the community. >> my approach begins with strong community engagement and collaboration. i'm here to work with the citizens of oakland. >> he's a smart crime fighter who delivers results, and it is what i demand. >> mitchell spent more than 20 years on the police force in kansas city. he then went on to serve as police chief in temple and lubbock, texas. after he is expected to start his job in

oakland in late april or early may, chief mitchell will face his fair share of issues when he takes the helm. >> abc seven news insider phil matier joined us on our show, getting answers at 3 p.m. to lay out some of those challenges. >> the emphasis is going to be on public safety, and that means more police on the streets. the question is whether oakland even has the money right now to put more police on the street in the numbers that may be needed. up to a 90 police officers are up for retirement this year. they've only got 700 officers, and the recruiting classes aren't going to match that. so not only is he going to be have possibly fewer patrol officers, but also some of the command staff is looking at the door as well. this is not a great time to become oakland's new police chief. there are a lot of challenges, not the least of which is the politics of oakland, which have never stopped rumbling or never know unexpectedly what might happen. >> phil matier believes mitchell is making a good first impression. he says a key to

mitchell's success will be connecting with everyday neighbors. >> girl scout cookies are a mainstay this time of year, but some north bay scammers may be targeting the troop selling them and amanda is live with how these thieves are taking advantage of children. >> yeah, kumasi what they're doing is using counterfeit money to buy girl scout cookies. >> there are multiple reports of it happening in solano county three times, in fact, in the last month. and each time it involved a person giving the scouts a counterfeit $100 bill, the troop impacted, says they didn't realize the bills were fake until they got a notice from their bank. fairfield police say usually the goal of the scammer is to get cash in return. investigators say it happened twice in lowes parking lots and the third time was in front of a peet's coffee. >> what's heartbreaking? these are children, you know, we're taking advantage of our children, and so in both cases, you know, the person came across as extremely genuine and just wanting to support the girl scout troops. >> one of the same troops was victimized last year as well,

opening day. the giants kick off their season on the road against the san diego padres. first pitch is at 110. today, they returned to oracle park for the home opener next friday, april 5th. and now the a's will be at the coliseum for their home opener against the cleveland guardians tonight. first pitch is at 707, and the team is giving out magnets schedules to fans who will be at the game. now the a's home opener is coming with some controversy. fans are angry and expecting to protest in the parking lot as the team. as the team begins, what could be its final season in oakland. they plan to

crashed into the bridge. abc news reporter perry russom is live in baltimore with more on that investigation. perry >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. state police are describing a terrifying situation for the men who were killed. two were find were found trapped in their truck underwater. >> we're now moving from a recovery mode to a salvage operation. >> maryland state police say the divers have to wait for the rubble to be cleared before they can find the missing. the area they're trying to get to is fully enclosed by concrete and metal. yesterday, divers recovering the bodies of alejandro hernandez fuentes and dorian cabrera divers located a red pickup truck submerged in approximately 25ft of water. >> divers recovered two victims of this tragedy trapped within the vehicle. >> among the four still missing and presumed dead are miguel luna from el salvador, a father of three, and minor. suazo sandoval from honduras, a father of two. >> minor and miguel are just two

stories. two specific examples of thousands of thousands of baltimoreans that are making a contribution to this beautiful country. >> the ntsb says new information from a data recorder on dolly shows at 126 in the morning, the pilot calls for tugboats. at 127. the pilot reports they lost all power and are getting close to the bridge. 129 sounds can be heard consistent with the collision. new video shows how crucial that communication was. traffic cleared from the bridge just moments before dolly comes into view. is it clear what's in the cargo on that ship? >> we do have the manifest of the ship. i have not reviewed it, but we do have the manifest, and we know that dot's hazmat team is also on scene. >> the coast guard says 56 cargo containers on board have hazardous materials, even though they're hazardous, we've determined that there really isn't any kind of threat to the public. >> the port of baltimore is still closed. cutting off a

window shattered. police say it's still not clear what led to this incident between the woman and her son. he is expected to survive this morning. >> we're learning new details about the death of a west point cadet from the bay area. south florida police say the 21 year old died in an apparent accidental drowning. a man is at the live desk with what we know, amanda. >> yeah, reggie haven morris was from pleasanton and was a west point cadet on leave in florida. >> fort lauderdale police say he was on spring break and was last seen over the weekend. during the overnight hours saturday going into sunday, a fort lauderdale police spokesperson told the miami herald that a dive team pulled his body out of a river in a press release, west point says his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected. the downtown area he was in is only a block or so away from the new river. on social media, a woman named melissa replied to our story, claiming to be his former employer. she wrote, quote, haven was one of the most

closer to becoming the bay area's newest transit hub. congressman john garamendi awarded the city $850,000 to make that a reality, so they plan to build a bayfront transit hub within the next five years. it will include a train station and ferry terminal, along with a retail and living space. leaders say it will help alleviate some of the traffic at the connection between highway four and interstate 80. >> we have a lot of great opportunities for people to stop and shop and eat, so, so we're happy about that. but we want to make sure that we keep the traffic flowing. and that's why that's what brings this project

all woman board after la county, the owner of a butterfly farm near lahaina hopes his small business could be a sanctuary for residents as maui continues to recover from the wildfires. >> last year, the maui butterfly farm survived the fires, but they remain closed out of respect for other locals dealing with the aftermath. the owner, jeff wilson, says he knew it was time to reopen after an encounter with a woman who lost her own butterfly garden in the fires. she said hey, can i just come in and cruise around because i want to see some butterflies and i want see some plants. >> and sadly, my house that i lived in my entire life. my family's been there for 100 years, close to prison street in lahaina has burned down. can i just cruise? and i said, absolutely. and i brought in her whole family for free. >> the wilson say business is down about 50% compared to last year, but it's slowly picking back up after seeing an alarming number of gray whales dying and washing ashore in recent years. >> scientists say they believe the event that caused it may be over. local experts, who did

necropsies on these whales think climate change was one of the main reasons driving this unusual mortality event. that is what they are calling it. researchers think whales had less food available in their normal feeding grounds, so they didn't have the strength to make it for their annual migration. and then they ultimately died. recently, though, they say the whales have adapted. while this unusual mortality event may be over local experts, i know some of these images are a little graphic. it's hard to see. so they think this particular event might be over. but there are still risks to the whales like ship strikes. so they're just i didn't need all of this. >> i know i'm not even eating my cereal yet. >> well i'm glad the whales are doing better. now for your morning money report amazon is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence. the tech company announced it's adding another $2.75 billion to its investment. and anthropic, the san francisco startup, is considered a leader in generative ai and has created its own chatbot to compete with

you're getting in or out of the city, you're speeding in both directions. drew >> hey, amanda. we'll go outside. here's the exploratorium camera, partly cloudy conditions. we're in between storm systems right now, so it's a mix of sun and clouds. today it's a cooler day in the wake of a cold front that moved through here late last night with those light showers, upper 50s to the lower 60s. tomorrow, though, we're emphasizing wet and windy weather is back. it's a level two moderate system for a thunderstorm. possible as well, and those winds will be gusty. a wind advisory kicks in here tomorrow morning for the east bay hills, the santa cruz mountains and the coastline of the peninsula where those winds up to 45mph could bring trees down and also cause some isolated power outages. so here's future weather tomorrow morning, 8 a.m. we have initial bands of light rain moving onshore. it's into the early afternoon. heavier rain starts to develop and into the evening we can see those pockets of downpours continuing and that's our best chance of seeing a thunderstorm. look at these rainfall totals. pretty good for a late season storm. many areas probably approaching an inch of
