this is america, this morning. >> good friday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the bridge collapse in baltimore. >> we have new video from inside the cargo ship that hit the bridge. experts say it could take one month just to clear the wreckage of this disaster from the water. >> we're also learning more about the six victims of the bridge collapse and the two survivors. the wife of a construction worker who survived says her husband doesn't even know how to swim, but somehow escaped. abc's perry russom is in baltimore with the latest perry. good morning. >> rihanna. good morning to you. resources are now flowing into baltimore, including federal funding and large equipment to clear the water. this morning, the largest crane on the east coast arriving in baltimore and helping in the recovery efforts after tuesday's deadly bridge collapse. we've got work to do, but we're moving the 1000 ton crane will help pull these giant pieces of metal from the river. the federal government has now approved $60 million to help with initial costs for moving

the debris and reopening the port of baltimore. >> i want to be clear, this work will not take hours. this work will not take days. this work will not just take weeks. we have a very long road ahead of us. we understand that. and we're preparing investigators have been on board daily surveying the twisted steel encasing the front of the ship. >> the coast guard says they're trying to determine where to cut the bridge. the weight of those beams crashing onto the ship, a major challenge. abc's elizabeth schulze with an up close look. >> from here, you can see the piece of the key bridge weighing down the bow of the ship. we're told that that piece alone weighs between 3 and 4000 tons. the army corps of engineers is going to have to cut it up into four parts and lift it off before they can even begin to clear it out. >> eight construction workers were on the bridge when it collapsed. authorities have recovered the bodies of two men in a pickup truck underwater. four others are presumed dead, trapped under the wreckage. two people survived an estimated 185

foot fall into the water, the wife of one of them saying, my husband doesn't know how to swim. it's a miracle he survived. but her family is still in mourning. she says her brother in law was one of the workers killed. >> let us join together in a moment of silence for those who lost their lives at the baltimore orioles game yesterday, three police officers honored for saving lives by shutting down the bridge in the moments before it collapsed, preventing an even larger disaster. >> and when asked for a timeline on removing the wreck, the governor did not have an answer, saying it's a complicated process. the department of homeland security is using an estimate that shows this entire collapse could cost up to $4 billion. andrew back to you with the latest from baltimore. >> perry. thank you. pro-palestinian demonstrators descended on new york last night as president biden held a star studded fundraiser, joined by former presidents. obama and clinton. the protesters clashed with police outside radio city music hall calling for a ceasefire in gaza. the biden campaign says the fundraiser brought in $26 million, the

biggest haul ever for a political event. the three presidents took part in an on stage conversation moderated by stephen colbert, lizzo and queen latifah also performed. donors paid up to $500,000 to attend. meanwhile, former president trump was also in new york, putting a spotlight on crime. he attended a wake for an nypd officer gunned down during a traffic stop. the trump campaign claims it will top biden's fundraising record next week by bringing in $33 million at a palm beach event. >> his lawyer calls him an awkward math nerd. prosecutors call him a greedy swindler. no matter what you call him. sam bankman-fried, the man who became a billionaire at age 30, is now headed to prison. just two years ago, ftx founder sam bankman-fried mingled with the rich and powerful. this morning, the one time king of crypto is off to federal prison for 25 years, although experts say that sentence could be cut in half with good behavior. and by completing prison rehab

programs. ftx was the premier crypto exchange, but it collapsed in late 2022 after bankman-fried used billions in customer funds to keep his hedge fund, alameda research, afloat. at his trial, prosecutors played this abc news interview. >> so you do know, and you did know that fdx deposits were being funneled to alameda. >> so i was vaguely aware that that was how some wires were being sent in the first place. >> didn't that set off alarm bells in your head? >> so there are a lot of people who are involved in that process. and look, i really deeply wish that i had taken like a lot more responsibility for understanding what the details were of what was going on there. >> his lawyer, seeking a more lenient sentence, described bankman-fried as an awkward math nerd, but his victims claim he was more calculating, one telling the judge he lost money. i wanted to spend on a family home, another saying it was my

life savings and now i'm left with nothing. bankman-fried won't just be serving prison time as punishment. >> the judge also ordered bankman-fried to forfeit $11 billion. he does not have that. but prosecutors can use assets they've already seized from him to compensate victims, though many of the ftx customers have said they're losing hope they'll ever be made whole. >> even if victims do get their money back. many cryptocurrencies at the time of ftx's collapse would be worth considerably more. today, bitcoin's value has increased more than 300% since late 2022. prosecutors requested up to 50 years in prison, and the judge ruled that would be excessive, but did acknowledge a lack of remorse from bankman-fried. >> the faa is investigating the taxiway collision of two delta jets at the minneapolis airport. the planes clipped each other's wings as one was moving on the taxiway and the other was pulling away from its gate. passengers say they were stunned and which is startling. >> the boom and most violent

shake i've ever had on on an airplane. we were taxiing and all of a sudden just a big, jarring bump, on the runway. >> no one was injured. nearly 300 passengers then boarded other planes to their destinations. >> the man accused of going on a stabbing rampage in rockford, illinois, says he became paranoid while doing drugs. just before the attack, a vigil was held for the four people who were killed. seven others were injured. the suspect claims the marijuana he was smoking with his friend was laced, and that's what fueled his rampage within minutes, authorities say he killed his friend and his friend's mother, along with a neighborhood mail carrier and a 15 year old girl down the street who was watching a movie with her three friends. >> then you think about these four. they were doing what we all do, but you should all be doing. it's spring break. you have three girls watching a movie. i can't even comprehend

that. >> just tragic. >> police say the 15 year old died while protecting her sister. the suspect faces four counts of first degree murder on capitol hill. >> a food fight appears to be ramping up. 14 senators have sent a letter to the usda and other health officials urging them not to reclassify the potato as a grain. it's currently listed as a vegetable. the dispute comes amid reports that officials may reclassify the potato in the government's dietary guidelines. some experts say potatoes should not count toward a person's daily vegetable intake because they're high in carbs. but the senators say changing the potatoes classification would hurt farmers and confuse consumers. >> it is time now for your friday weather >> good morning. we're looking at another storm system working its way through the golden state. it dropped south through friday, saturday and sunday, so it's going to be wet and snowy. a foot to two feet of snow for donner pass. so travel problems

truck sideswiped the bus and that's what caused it to flip over. two people died, including a five year old boy, court papers say. the truck driver admitted for only sleeping for three hours and using cocaine before the crash. >> the family of riley strain the college student found dead in nashville, is now requesting a second autopsy. strain's body was found last week in the cumberland river, two weeks after he was last seen during a night out. a family friend says strain was not wearing pants or his boots when his body was recovered, and the autopsy, which called strain's death accidental, also revealed that no water was found in his lungs, which could call into question whether strain was alive when he entered the river. >> we turn now to your money and wall street soaring to new heights. the dow approaching 40,000. but will most american families really benefit from this rally? here's abc's alison kosik. >> say goodbye to the best first quarter since 2019. >> a stock market rally for the record books. stocks have closed

out the first three months of the year, not only logging their best quarter since 2019, but in the case of the s&p 500 hitting a new record high. people who've been on the sidelines who finally said, i've got to get in because all my friends are sitting around the dinner on sunday talking about how much money they're making, right? recession worries now being replaced with confidence, along with a big helping of enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and the tech sector. stocks like chip maker nvidia surging more than 80% this year, also giving the market a boost. the federal reserve chairman saying this about interest rates last week. >> we believe that our policy rate is likely at its peak for this tightening cycle. >> translation after raising interest rates 11 times to tame inflation, the fed could begin cutting them later this year, fueling this latest run up in stocks. >> we've seen the highs of
