>> yes, we're going to get to that. but first, start with the check of our forecast. drew good morning. >> so we are in store for a wet and windy day. it is a quiet start out there on our friday live doppler seven, showing you there are some returns off the coast right now. anything you see in the north bay. this is currently not hitting the ground. we're waiting a warm front to move through here. this morning. that will bring some light rain and then a cold front this afternoon will bring heavier showers and gusty winds. you can clearly see our storm on satellite. that low pressure wrapping up. here's the cold front and it's moving in our direction. it's level two a moderate storm today. rain heavy at times. there's the chance of a thunderstorm with hail and some gusty winds. a wind advisory begins at 8 a.m. this morning. here's future weather at 8 a.m. we're seeing that warm front moving onshore with lighter showers. and then as we head towards lunchtime and into the afternoon here comes the heavy rain. it's also at this time that will also see some strong gusty winds. and these showers are going to linger into friday night. and also part of saturday. we'll show you that full timeline in eight minutes.

let's check in with amanda and see if those roads are doing hi drew. >> certainly looking and feeling like a friday morning this morning on our roads throughout the bay area. the overall map showing no major slowdowns at all, which is great news. and in emeryville, traffic here is starting to fill up on westbound 80. drive time from highway four to the toll plaza is 30 minutes. send it back to reggie. thanks samantha. >> this morning we are working to learn more about a deadly shooting in downtown san francisco. this happened last night just outside the powell street bart station. police blocked off the entrance at market and fifth street around 10 p.m. we know at least one person died. we are still working to learn what led up to the shooting. police say there have not been any arrests in connection to that shooting. a homeowners association in san francisco takes matters into its own hands. it's hoping a gate will bring an end to what they describe as an open air drug market. a fence has now gone up in the tenderloin and mcallister and leavenworth streets. that's where scott bakery is located. it even has a code to get in.

according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, the department of public works issued a permit to the 83 mcallister homeowners association. >> in san francisco, it has been a decade since the city launched its vision zero policy. the traffic safety policy, pledging to eliminate all traffic fatalities. but it has fallen short of its goal. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us now live in the studio with what the mayor wants to do to fix these issues. gloria, good morning. >> kumasi san francisco pledged to make changes to eliminate all traffic deaths ten years ago, but traffic deaths have actually climbed over the past five years since the city's vision zero pledge, 1 in 500 people have died in traffic related collisions in san francisco since 2014, the city's vision zero tracker online also shows more than 200 others are seriously injured, while traveling on city streets every year. this month, a family of four was killed after a driver crashed into a bus shelter in

the city's west portal neighborhood. and yesterday, mayor london breed said the city is planning to increase their efforts, including more traffic enforcement. walk s.f. and the sf bicycle coalition are pushing for more to be done. >> the san francisco bicycle coalition will play our part, holding decision makers accountable. >> all the data doesn't lie. we have around 30 people killed every year and about 3000 people injured. >> and part of the city's plan includes speeding up the installation of 400 automated license plate readers across the city. it aims to help catch drivers who flee the scene after hitting a pedestrian or a cyclist, and the mayor is also directing the sfmta to come up with a plan to tackle dangerous intersections live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thank you gloria. >> a new state bill proposal aims to address traffic safety in school zones across california. >> i'm here today because of one

simple but devastating fact traffic violence is the number one cause of death for california's school age children . it's not disease. it's not guns. it's not drowning. it's getting hit by a car. >> the bill is called a safer school zones act, authored by assembly member marc berman of san mateo. it aims to make new street reforms in school zones across the state. the main one lowered speed limits to 20 miles an hour or less. right now, there are 39 states that have a maximum school speed zone statue like this one. california is one of only nine states where the speed limit is more than 20 miles an hour, but in both oakland and san francisco, the school zone speed limit is 15 miles an hour. many other cities across the southeast and north bays have limits at 25 miles an hour. >> there's a new $10 million plan to keep employees safe on the streets of oakland. the ceos of oakland's four largest companies are now joining forces

blue shield of california, kaiser permanente, p-g-and-e's, and clorox are creating an uptown downtown safe zone with increased private security. it will also establish an ambassadors program, fund employee safety training and subsidized transportation for employees to and from work and transit hubs. the program will be rolled out in the coming weeks. thousands of a's fans staged a protest in the parking lot of the oakland coliseum. while the team opened up the season yesterday, some fans said they wanted to make a statement by staying out of the stands. a man is at the live desk with the story for us. >> good morning reggie. the a's say the official attendance inside the ballpark was about 13,522 people. that's a low attendance total for an opening night, according to the abc seven sports department. but much of the activity was actually outside the stadium. there was live music, food, games and even fan sponsored merchandise giveaways, a tailgate of sorts that lasted the entire duration of the game. fans we spoke with say they want

will bring light showers after about 8 a.m, and then heavier rain expected this afternoon for the morning commute out there this morning. just a very low chance over the next couple of hours for some spotty drizzle. it's likely after 8 a.m. and closer to 10 a.m. that we find those showers become steadier in nature, but mainly light for the first part of our day. it's later this afternoon. the rain turns heavier and the winds will begin to pick up a wind advisory has been expanded to include most of the bay area. the only exception are low lying valleys in the bay shoreline right now. so our hills are going to experience winds in excess of 45mph, and that could bring some trees down and also cause some power outages. here's how the day looks this morning. we have light showers on the way with the warm front, and then right around lunchtime and into the afternoon. that is when we are wet and windy. that is when we have downpours moving through. that is when the winds are picking up and even tonight we have the chance of a thunderstorm. so look at the next three days. it is wet and windy today. showers will linger into saturday, but we're drying out just in time for easter. on

rise here in the u.s. the infections are caused by a strain of neisseria meningitis. symptoms usually include a fever, headache, nausea and a stiff neck. the cdc says recent cases have shown bloodstream infections and infected joints. infections are reportedly impacting middle aged adults when they usually affect babies or young adults, and it can be treated with antibiotics. in the north bay, a whooping cough outbreak spreading across marin county. there have been 113 cases since december. the majority of those cases, 65, have come from tamalpais high school. >> typically starts off very nonspecific and very mild. with a runny nose. it could be a sore throat or even just some fatigue a couple days or even up to a week later is when the cough starts. >> doctors recommend anyone who feels sick getting tested if it comes back positive. isolate while infectious. for teenagers, whooping cough is not very serious. but for other age

groups like infants, it can be deadly. >> we don't give the pertussis vaccine until babies are about two months old. so if they were to get this illness before that vaccine, it would be a much more serious illness. >> marin county health officials say so far, no cases in infants or hospitalizations have been reported. >> an organization in the south bay is fighting for what it feels is an inequality in federal policy, and that policy has to do with menthol cigarets. there's a national ban on the table for this type of flavor. now, it's already banned in california. that happened in 2022. one south bay group says they are still fighting. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains the decision on whether to ban menthol cigarets nationwide is still up in the air. >> studies show the menthol market has targeted black communities. local leaders say federal action on a ban is needed now. for one public health official, it's personal. every day matters. >> uh- the black community has

been disproportionally targeted. my father was a smoker in his young life. he got through college partially by getting a scholarship from the tobacco industry to distribute cigarets to his college friends in the 50s. >> in october, the fda proposed rules to the white house to ban the manufacturing and sales of menthol cigarets. the biden administration then delayed a final ruling of the ban from december to march. now it's almost april and the ruling is still undecided. i think this is an equity issue. >> i think this is an issue that we want justice and we want fairness. some studies show under a menthol ban, overall smoking would be projected to decline by 35% in 2026. >> it could save 654,000 lives over the next 40 years. that translates to more than 200,000 premature deaths averted in the black community. >> we want to keep it in front of the legislators mind.

oakland schools are really failing their own students. the new data suggests only 2 in 10 black and brown students is reading at grade level. that is 14% below the state average. just 1 in 10 is doing math at grade level. that's 10% below the state average, and math proficiency is unchanged since 2015. the report is called raise the bar. it's based on publicly available data covering all of oakland's public schools, both district and charter schools. it's about 4500 students. oakland's school board does not dispute the data, but it says oh, usd has programs in place to help with student achievement, especially the superintendents. >> a strategic plan. it's right on. it hits all the important areas, but we need to accelerate . >> the board admits oakland schools have been behind for decades, but it says they're trying to change the narrative. board president sam davis says he's asking the superintendent to include student outcome data

in prison yesterday for one of the biggest financial fraud cases in history. amanda, the judge really threw the book at him. >> reggie aqui sam bankman-fried , his lawyer, calls him an awkward math nerd, but prosecutors are calling him a greedy swindler. no matter what you call him. the man is now headed to prison. just two years ago, the ftx founder mingled with the rich and powerful after becoming a billionaire at age 30. now he'll be spending 25 years in federal prison. experts believe that sentence could be cut in half with good behavior. and by completing prison rehab programs, bankman-fried's parents, who are law professors at stanford, sent the judge a letter prior to sentencing, according to our media partners at the mercury news, his parents described him as smart, empathetic and motivated to only do good, but the judge wasn't having any of it. during sentencing, saying, quote, he knew it was wrong. he knew it was criminal. bankman-fried's parents issued a short statement following that decision, saying, we are heartbroken and will

to eliminate traffic deaths. the mayor acknowledging the need for more enforcement this month, a family of four was killed after a driver crashed into a bus shelter in the city's west portal neighborhood and traffic deaths in san francisco have actually climbed over the past five years, the city falling short of its vision zero pledge ten years ago to eliminate all traffic fatalities. more than 500 people died in traffic related collisions in san francisco since the pledge. the city's vision zero tracker online also shows more than 200 others are seriously injured while traveling on city streets every year. >> it's objectively failed. you know, we were supposed to have zero roadway fatalities and severe injuries this year, and by my count, we had about over 30. we had 39 in 2022, fatalities and about 500 severe injuries every, every year. >> i've asked for three specific things a daylighting plan and

policy to prioritize the treatment of intersections citywide, a no right on red policy and increased parking control enforcement to ticket people who park on sidewalks and block our crosswalks and bike lanes. >> yesterday, mayor london breed said the city is planning to increase their efforts, including more traffic enforcement and also directing sfmta to come up with a plan to tackle dangerous intersections. part of the city's plan includes speeding up the installation of 400 automated license plate readers across the city. it aims to help catch drivers who flee the scene after hitting a pedestrian or a cyclist live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news thank you, gloria. >> the city of alameda is lifting up its first its female first responders as women history month is coming to an end. abc seven news reporter ryan curry shows us why these women hope to inspire the next generation. >> said there is no limit to

>> artificial intelligence at the airport still ahead. the advanced measures that will soon be used at the security line, and your right to opt out. families across the country are chasing the eclipse. the spring break, including kumasi. we're taking a look at the economics of the eclipse tourism rush. but first, check on the weather with drew. he's chasing a second one. >> we'll take a look at our storm concerns today. the biggest concern we have is flooding on our roadways, and that would likely occur later on this afternoon. the timing of the heaviest rain. but we're also watching for the potential of trees coming down and power outages, because the winds will start to ramp up throughout the morning. and they will peak this afternoon with winds potentially over 45mph. and we do have the risk of lightning. i think that risk is probably later today and into the evening as low pressure gets closer to us. it's a level two moderate storm today. rain heavy at times. the chance of a thunderstorm and those gusty winds as well. let's talk about the rainfall first. right now it's pretty quiet out there. but as we head later into the

morning and into the afternoon, we're really highlighting this time frame between, say, noon and about 5 p.m. and that is when we have the chance of that heavy rain developing as that cold front moves through. but even after that cold front later on tonight, if you have friday night plans, we still have chances for rain in the forecast. and it's later on tonight that we could see a thunderstorm develop as well. that could contain some lightning and even some small hail. the winds with this storm will start to begin to increase as we head throughout the morning into the afternoon. i think this model is going a little low on the wind. speeds are gusting right around 30 32mph. i think we'll likely see some higher wind speeds in o hills closer to 50mph. that's why we do have a wind advisory in effect for a big portion of the region, all shaded in tan this morning. this begins at 8 a.m, and those winds could go as high as 50mph, certainly in our highest peaks. i would expect winds even higher than that. watch those speeds very closely. looking at the next three days, it's just a wet and windy friday . the showers will linger into saturday. even the potential of

florida governor ron desantis signed a bill allowing larger wine containers to be sold in the sunshine state. so it gets rid of a previous law that prohibited the sale of wine bottles larger than a gallon. desantis said the old law wasn't good for business or consumers. we want our businesses to thrive. >> we want our consumers to be happy, and if that means they want to buy and sell, a big old bottle of wine like this, then by golly, they're going to be able to do that in the state of florida.

rainfall totals close to the coast. we'll see a healthy amount of rain, a lot of cities likely hitting about an inch of rain. with this system, we'll watch our coastal ranges very closely in parts of sonoma, marin county, certainly the peninsula coastline and the santa cruz mountains. we could see more than two inches of rain out of the system. it's also a windy storm. a wind advisory kicks in here shortly. at 8 a.m. we'll find winds up to 50mph, so we'll likely see some isolated trees come down. not out of the question. we could also see some isolated power outages too. with this storm system. winds right now are pretty calm. the afternoon as that heavy rain moves in here, those winds start to race out of the south and again they could gust as high as 45 to 50mph. at times, the winds will calm down. tomorrow we will get snow heavy at times with this system as well. a winter storm warning begins at 8 a.m. today, lasting through sunday. the heaviest snow is going to fall late tonight into saturday, where we could see up to 30in over our highest peaks. that is going to be a pretty significant snowstorm that could create some slick and slow travel back here
