two fires in two days on one city block. san francisco fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the latest overnight emergency and whether they have a serial arsonist on their hands. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lim, the latest fire, a three alarm blaze that started overnight at the building on weiss and 15th street. that's about a block away from the saint john the evangelist episcopal church, which was damaged by fire just one night earlier. the latest fire started early this morning at about 2:00, where two people suffered injuries and several others were displaced. crews say when they arrived, they initially thought the flames had spread from vehicles to the building. it took more than 100 firefighters to put out the flames, so initial reports told us that uh- vehicles on fire had spread to the buildings. >> the flames had spread up the back of the buildings. these are what we consider ordinary construction or wood frame buildings. these are older buildings. they catch on fire and spread very quickly. this fire uh- rapidly expanded from a

first alarm to a third alarm. >> the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. however, investigators have already determined the fire friday morning at the church on that same street was intentionally set. the search continues for the person responsible. meanwhile, the church is refusing to let yesterday's fire interfere with easter weekend events. it's hosting its annual easter vigil tonight, where church officials say the building is structurally sound and the interior is mostly undamaged. saint john's episcopal church put out a statement today saying it's, quote, standing strong in our beloved mission community. tonight's vigil starts at 8:00. now moving to our other big story, that storm making a somewhat damp easter weekend in some parts of the bay area as we take a live look outside, spencer is standing by in the storm center with more on that. the good news seems to see some sun out there. >> that is true, diana. i'm glad you said stormy weather in some parts of the bay area because as
5:03 pm
you look at live doppler seven, you can see that for much of the bay area right now, the weather conditions are pretty quiet. however, down in the south bay, south of san jose, down in the area of coyote, morgan hill, it has been storming lately. i'm talking thunderstorm with reports of hail, small hail there and heavy downpours. and they're still heavy downpours throughout that region all the way down past morgan hill and into gilroy right now. and parts of the santa cruz mountains. so that's what we have at the moment. some stormy weather in the south bay, with quieter weather over most of the remainder of the area. this is still a level one storm in the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, so for tonight, we expect a few scattered showers. brief isolated downpours are likely like the ones we're looking at in the south bay right now, and still a chance of some isolated thunderstorms. forecast animation taking us into the late afternoon early evening hours shows the intensity of this system diminishing as we get into the evening hours, and by midnight, we might not have anything going on in terms of a storm at all. i'll give you a look beyond tonight at easter,

massive cranes, including this one the largest available on the east coast, capable of lifting 1000 tons. crews will work to cut the debris into pieces, which will then be lifted out of the water one by one. >> the north sections of the key bridge are going to be cut up and removed. this will eventually allow us to open up a temporary restricted channel that will help us to get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse. >> abc's elizabeth schulze with the coast guard getting an up close look at the complicated process, we can really see how challenging these conditions are. >> there is metal everywhere. jagged pieces of steel jutting out from underneath the water. >> the army corps of engineers has deployed sonar technology to better locate the debris and search for submerged vehicles. maryland's governor says the search for four construction workers who are still missing and presumed dead, is a top priority. >> we've continued to meet with families of all the victims, and they are in our hearts, and we are thinking about them now and

$935 million is up for grabs tonight. no one has won powerball's top prize since new year's day. and that means it is 37 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. if there is no winner tonight, that could push the next drawing on wednesday over to $1 billion. health leaders in the bay area are warning about the rising risk of measles. the cdc counts nearly 100 cases across the country so far this year, nearly double the total for all of last year. california has reported five cases so far. the cdc says most of the people who've gotten sick were not fully vaccinated, and about half are children younger than five who are at higher risk of hospitalization. health leaders for all nine bay area counties say this is a good time to make sure your entire family is up to date on their measles

vaccinations. >> this was really an opportunity for us to be more proactive, do what we really want to do and prevent cases, prevent larger situations from developing. >> the cdc says the mmr vaccine is 97% effective against the virus. meantime, allergy season has arrived and this year the pollen is packing a punch. allergists say they are seeing more adults coming in with seasonal allergies than they have ever had before. doctor jonathan wittkowski of ucsf tells us our wet winter is part of it. so is climate change putting more carbon dioxide into the air that fuels trees and plants to produce more pollen? what was once a seasonal sniffle is turning into a year round problem. pollen data shows the spring allergy season started about 20 days earlier than normal. watanuki says that we're seeing pollen levels rise early and stay elevated for longer. >> they're really extending further into the year. it's not uncommon to see grass pollens lingering well into the fall,
5:13 pm
even as late as october. so what used to be more of a seasonal inconvenience is proving now to be almost a year round challenge for many allergy sufferers. >> cdc data shows about 1 in 4 adults have seasonal allergies. that stat is slightly lower for children, but butowsky says he is seeing that number go up. coming up, a frightening close call involving a saw blade. the incident caught on camera that nearly cut short one man's trip to the convenience store. >> i'm spencer christian. we still have some active weather on this eve of easter, but it's beginning to ease a bit. i'll have the accuweather forecast in just a a victory that is there for the taking. grab it. now that was a great halftime speech. let's go win. so what could have been a gruesome incident and it is all caught on camera. abc's morgan norwood has this story. >> chilling video of an oregon man narrowly dodging a runaway four foot saw blade just moments after he went into a convenience store. >> i mean, obviously it wasn't my time, but it was probably the closest i've ever experienced to . >> surveillance video shared with our affiliate showing the saw blade barreling with high speed towards this oregon store, then striking just inches away from the door that shane remke opened just seconds earlier. the saw blade nearly slicing through the wall, these photos showing the damage. >> i was walking into the store here. i put my handle on the door and i heard a loud banging yelling over here at the corner. just as a cloud of smoke pops up and i see a guy fall into the ditch and a four foot blade hurtling at me. >> the impact to the front of the store so strong, the owner says the entire building shook.
5:17 pm
>> all they heard was like a metal rolling down from the street, and i looked at the camera. it was just wind and all the sudden we heard a loud bang like it shook the literally the whole store. >> a contractor on the scene who witnessed the incident telling our affiliate that the blade may have gotten loose from a lost bolt in addition to potential operator error, but remke says he's grateful to be alive following the close call and thankful to be here. >> really? absolutely. i mean, i was thinking maybe it was my time, but i don't think i would have survived getting touched by that thing. >> oh boy. >> hard to believe. >> what our director said, i think is true. there's a horror movie called saw. i think this is scarier. it is scarier. >> this is real life. >> well, i hope the weather isn't too scary. >> not so scary now. it's getting less scary as we get later into the day. dion right now looking at live doppler seven, you can see that there is some pretty scary weather down in the south bay. while much of the remainder of the bay area is experiencing fairly calm conditions, but we just had a
5:18 pm
pretty powerful thunderstorm down in the area of morgan hill and up north up towards, san jose. so this entire region right now from gilroy, morgan hill, westward over into the santa cruz mountains has sort of a line of heavy downpours at the moment. and there has been some thunder and lightning mixed in there. but right now things are beginning to calm down just a bit. this is a level one storm still on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale for tonight. we expect the intensity of the storm to continue diminishing, but there will be some scattered showers, maybe some brief isolated downpours and still a chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two. forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. shows that the most active weather will remain in the south bay. while there's a chance of a light shower somewhere else. but most of the remainder of the bay area will see calm weather tonight. however, overnight in the middle of the night, we'll see a little line of showers reaching down from the sacramento area southwestward through the central part of the bay area, but it won't amount to much and it should be all over by about 6:00 tomorrow morning, leading us into calm and at

5:20 pm
and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so nice calm day for easter sunday although again slight chance of a shower. sunny and warmer on monday. and that's not an april fools joke. that's for sure. but as we get later into this sunny and dry week, we'll see a drop in temperatures and maybe, maybe an isolated shower or two at the end of the week. >> okay, but maybe, maybe is a very scientific time. it is. yeah. okay. >> into your meteorological vocabulary. >> that's right. that's also too complicated for me to say. meteorological vocabulary. got it. tough. a lot of syllables. yeah. yours are much easier. yes. sports >> nine games left in the regular season for warriors hometown reunion last night for stephen curry last night in charlotte with a dub star set about translating success from the road to home sports is next
