city block. san francisco fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the latest overnight emergency and whether they have a serial arsonist on their hands. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lim. the latest fire, a three alarm blaze that started overnight at a building on weiss and 15th street that's about a block away from saint john the evangelist episcopal church, which was damaged by fire just one night earlier. the latest fire started early this morning at about 2:00, where two people suffered injuries and several others were displaced. crews say when they arrived, they initially thought the flames spread from vehicles to the building. it took more than 100 firefighters to put out the flames, so initial reports told us that uh- vehicles on fire had spread to the buildings. >> the flames had spread up the back of the buildings. these are what we consider ordinary construction or wood frame buildings. these are older buildings. they catch on fire and spread very quickly. this fire uh- rapidly expanded from a first alarm to a third alarm.

>> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. however, investigators have already determined the fire friday morning at the church on the same street was intentionally set. the search continues for the person responsible. meanwhile, the church is refusing to let yesterday's fire interfere with easter weekend events. it's hosting its annual easter vigil tonight. church officials say the building is structurally sound and the interior is mostly undamaged. saint john's episcopal church put out a statement today saying it's, quote, standing strong in our beloved mission community. tonight's vigil starts at 8:00. well, to our other big story, the storm that is making for a damp easter weekend in some parts of the bay area. as we take a live look outside where you can see at least some blue sky there spencer is standing by with some more on that. some damp weather. >> yes. well, dion, for much of the late afternoon it looked like the storm was going away.

but now we're in the early evening hours and it's stormy again. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that the action is down in the southern part of the viewing area, south of the golden gate. we've got thunderstorms rumbling right now on the peninsula in the area of san mateo and redwood city, and then farther southward down in the south bay near mountain view and sunnyvale, with lightning strikes and heavy downpours and a couple reports of hail falling as well, this storm is still a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. for tonight. we expect more scattered showers, mainly south of the golden gate. brief isolated downpours are possible and we may see some more thunderstorms, but as you watch the forecast animation, you can see that after about 8 p.m. or so, the threat of any active weather diminishes significantly, which gives us hope for sunny skies for easter. i'll have more on that a little bit later. dion. >> all right. looking forward to it spencer. thank you. well today's storms brought hail to some locations. check this out. this is what it looked like at one home in the santa cruz mountains. the viewer who took these photos says there were was lightning there. as well. now, parents across the bay area are watching the weather closely,

hoping annual easter egg hunts will not be affected by rain today. in many spots, storm clouds cleared giving way to sun and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more on what many hope will be an excellent holiday weekend in three, two, one. >> go look out hundreds of four year olds coming in hot on a mission for easter eggs to fill up those baskets. this is the city of berkeley's annual spring egg hunt extravaganza, and cesar chavez park organizer steph chu feared the big family event might be a washout. >> we were running rain or shine, but we got really lucky with this weather. it the sun came out for us, brigitte mendez brought her two kids, julian and olivia. >> i love the weather. was uh- cleared up and hopefully it stays like this for the rest of the weekend because we would like to do more fun events. >> elena ball's daughter and friends are all in. there's even

weather team use. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it now. in maryland, massive cranes are working to pull out wreckage from the bridge collapse from earlier this week, the state's governor gave an update today, saying this task will take time. here's abc news reporter maryalice parks. >> crews now working around the clock to clear the mangled debris of the collapsed francis scott key bridge in baltimore harbor. >> we have assets on the water enforcing safety zones 24 hours a day. we have assessments on the dolly being conducted 24 hours a day. this is an around the clock operation, and we're going to ramp up our 24 over seven posture in the coming days. >> the us navy sending four massive cranes, including this one the largest available on the east coast, capable of lifting 1000 tons. crews will work to cut the debris into pieces, which will then be lifted out of the water one by one.

>> the north sections of the key bridge are going to be cut up and removed. this will eventually allow us to open up a temporary restricted channel that will help us to get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse. >> abc's elizabeth schulze with the coast guard getting an up close look at the complicated process. >> we can really see how challenging these conditions are. there is metal everywhere. jagged pieces of steel jutting out from underneath the water. >> the army corps of engineers has deployed sonar technology to better locate the debris and search for submerged vehicles. maryland's governor says the search for four construction workers who are still missing and presumed dead is a top priority. >> we've continued to meet with families of all the victims, and they are in our hearts and we are thinking about them now and always. >> an inspection by the ntsb determining that 56 of the ships containers were carrying hazardous material. investigators say they've spotted a sheen on the water, but maryland's governor and coast guard officials say there's no immediate health or

environmental threat. maryalice parks, abc news, washington. >> apple is suing a former employee. they say leaked corporate secrets to journalists. the san francisco ios software engineer allegedly used their company issued iphone to exchange messages with reporters. according to the lawsuit, the employee was trying to kill the products and features they didn't like by exposing them. apple is seeking a jury trial, along with payback of the employees bonuses and stocks. the suit was filed in the santa clara county superior court. more than $900 million in powerball cash could be yours tonight. we'll take a look ahead to one of the largest lottery jackpot draws in history that's coming up. also, a very sharp close call for a convenience store customer. what came rolling his way that sent him

tonight, that could actually push the next drawing on wednesday to over $1 billion. health leaders in the bay area are warning about the rising risk of measles. the cdc counts nearly 100 cases across the country so far this year, nearly double the total for all of last year. california has reported five cases so far. the cdc says most of the people who have gotten sick were not fully vaccinated. about half are children younger than five who are at higher risk for hospitalization. health leaders for all nine bay area counties say this is a good time to make sure your whole family is up to date on their vaccinations. >> this was really an opportunity for us to be more proactive, do what we really want to do and prevent cases, prevent larger situations from developing. >> cdc the cdc says the mmr vaccine is 97% effective against the virus. allergy season has arrived, and this year the pollen is packing a punch. allergists say they are seeing

more adults coming in with seasonal allergies. they've never had before. doctor jonathan wittkowski of ucsf tells us our wet winter is part of it. so is climate change putting more carbon dioxide into the air that fuels trees and plants to produce more pollen? what was once a seasonal sniffle is turning into a year round problem. pollen data shows the spring allergy season started about 20 days earlier than normal, and with, he says, we are seeing pollen levels rise early and stay elevated for longer. >> they're really extending further into the year. it's not uncommon to see grass pollens lingering well into the fall, even as late as october. so what used to be more of a seasonal inconvenience is proving now to be almost a year round challenge for many allergy sufferers. >> cdc data shows about 1 in 4 adults has seasonal allergies. the stat is slightly lower for children, but he says he is seeing that number go up. coming up, a frightening close call

is just making a trip to the convenience store. turns out he escapes what could have been a gruesome incident, and it's all caught on camera. here's abc's morgan norwood. >> chilling video of an oregon man narrowly dodging a runaway four foot saw blade just moments after he went into a convenience store. >> i mean, obviously, it wasn't my time, but, yeah, it was probably the closest i've ever experienced to. >> surveillance video shared with our affiliate showing the saw blade barreling with high speed towards this oregon store, then striking just inches away from the door that shane remke

opened just seconds earlier. the saw blade nearly slicing through the wall, these photos showing the damage. >> i was walking into the store here. i put my handle on the door and i heard a loud banging yelling over here at the corner. just as a cloud of smoke pops up and i see a guy fall into the ditch and a four foot blade hurling at me. >> the impact to the front of the store so strong, the owner says the entire building shook. >> all they heard was like a metal rolling down from the street and i looked at the camera. it was just wind and all the sudden we heard a loud bang like it shocked the literally the whole store. >> a contractor on the scene who witnessed the incident telling our affiliate that the blade may have gotten loose from a lost bolt in addition to potential operator error, but remke says he's grateful to be alive following the close call and thankful to be here. >> really? absolutely. i mean, i was thinking maybe it's my time, but i don't think i would have survived getting touched by that thing. >> that's gary. the sound is pretty bad. it really is. oh,

well, hopefully the weather's not going to be pretty bad. we're not going to have close calls like that. >> yeah, please. no, but things are a little mixed right now. we've got mainly calm conditions over most of the bay area, as you can see here on live doppler seven. and we've got stormy weather down in parts of the peninsula and the south bay. so let's close in on that. we've got thunderstorms rumbling right now between san mateo and redwood city. some over here near portola valley, and some heavy downpours over in the palo alto mountain view sunnyvale area. so active weather in the southern part of our viewing area. this is a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale for tonight. scattered showers will continue, although we expect them to diminish in intensity later tonight. still a chance for some brief, isolated downpours and of course, thunderstorms. forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. shows that most of the activity tonight will be south of the golden gate, down across the peninsula into the south bay, and we expect it to wind down rather early by about 10 or 11 p.m. then overnight, we might see a line of showers developing up in the sacramento area and reaching southwestward down

through the central part of the bay area. just a narrow band of showers and after that, we expect weather to calm down and we'll start easter sunday tomorrow with mainly dry conditions. the winds right now are generally on the breezy side, not very gusty, only over at livermore do we have gusty conditions up to about 20 miles, 22mph. but the big story is the 24 hour temperature change. it is so much warmer right now. 7 to 10 degrees warmer across most of the region than at this time yesterday. here's the view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. 61 degrees right now in both oakland and san francisco. mid to upper 50s, that half moon bay, san jose, san mateo and 63 at hayward looking toward the city from emeryville right now, of the temperature readings at this hour, generally in the mid to upper 50s at santa rosa, petaluma, concord and livermore, 62 degrees at napa and fairfield and let's check out our forecast headlines. so for tonight, scattered showers and some thunderstorms likely. we're experiencing them right now. tomorrow easter. slight chance of showers, but a mix of clouds and sun and a mainly dry day is

expected early next week, though sunnier skies and warmer days is going to be a great start to the week. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s and of course a chance of some scattered light showers. then tomorrow a fairly mild day even if we don't get as much sun as we're hoping for, it looks like high temperatures will rise into the mid 60s in most locations, so we'll call it low to mid 60s, except on the coast, where highs will reach only into the upper 50s. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast okay. mix of clouds and sun tomorrow. sunny and warmer on monday, which is uh- april fool's day. and this is not an april fool's forecast. a tuesday warming continues with high temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 70s inland, then starts to cool down as we get later into the week, but we expect a mainly dry week coming our way. >> abc seven sports is sponsored by your northern california honda dealers. >> the warriors five game road trip comes to an end in san antonio tomorrow after last night's win in charlotte. the warriors of won three in a row, entered tomorrow's contest with a one game lead over houston for
