the mid 60s around the region, so no longer seeing any 70s on the board. we'll go to 59 in the city, 62 in oakland, 67 in san jose. now showers are back tomorrow, reggie, we'll show you that coming up in eight minutes. drew. >> thank you. developing news. taiwan's strongest earthquake in 25 years has killed more than half a dozen people. of course, those numbers are early, and it's left hundreds hurt. amanda crews are now racing to save people who are still trapped in the rubble. >> yeah, reggie, this really is an urgent effort to find people who survived. many are trapped inside buildings that have collapsed. here's what we know right now. the preliminary magnitude 7.4, and it was felt across the entire island. this was followed by a 6.5 aftershock. at least nine people are dead. more than 820 others injured, at least 127 were trapped under rubble for hours after the quake. it struck during the morning commute just before 8 a.m. local time, and left some buildings leaning at 45 degree angles. others

collapsed with motorcycles under awnings. the entire first floor leveled. vivian shaw is a reporter based in taipei, more than six hours away from the epicenter. >> i was in the office at that time and people were holding on to the doors because everything was falling off, and we wanted to get to the doorways in case some thing collapsed. we have already experienced a lot of aftershocks, within like 1.5 hours after the initial earthquake, there were 39 aftershocks recorded. >> at least two dozen buildings have collapsed, according to the fire department. and this child was pulled out from under the rubble of one, then carried away. you saw it there. the us geological survey registered its initial aftershock at magnitude 6.5. we know tsunami advisories were triggered in nearby japan, then later lifted some small tsunamis hit islands in southern japan. none caused any damage. back to you at the desk.

>> thank you. amanda. well, some people who felt the earthquake in taiwan are on their way to the bay area right now. abc seven news reporter lena howland live at sfo, where they'll be getting there in about an hour. lena >> hey, kumasi. that's right. those slightly delayed. there are two different flights from taiwan. expect to land here at sfo in a little more than an hour from now, both carrying passengers who felt this intense earthquake. a youtuber in taiwan captured the quake on this video inside of his apartment, roughly 80 miles south of the epicenter in taichung city at sfo last night, we talked to passengers who were actually in the air the moment this happened. one couple from taipei was receiving messages from family and friends. >> yeah, they're all fine, but just like have to clean out like the whole household got really messy. wow. >> yeah, yeah, it's very scary. >> we have some broken bottles here and there at home. yeah, but the good thing is that don't

get hurt. yeah. what i heard on the messenger app, you know that looks like the most of my friends are okay. >> now, we also talked to one man out of fremont who you just heard from. he said his parents felt the quake 150 miles from the epicenter. and he is relieved to hear his loved ones are okay. now, again, we do know of two flights arriving here at sfo in the 6:00 hour. that's when we are expecting to hear from some more passengers who felt this quake live at sfo. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena, and stay with abc seven news for updates on the earthquake in taiwan. you can get breaking news alerts as they happen by downloading the abc seven news app. >> caltrans has made it official tomorrow and friday. they will not have convoys escorting people along highway one past a portion of the road that collapsed over the weekend. that's because of the rain that's moving in. saturday's collapse happened between carmel and big sur, leaving a big hole

in one of the lanes. crews have been working all week to make sure the remaining lane is safe to reopen. for one way traffic, 24 hours a day. they don't have a timeline to finish that work. caltrans will resume the convoys during the daylight once the rain passes. the situation along highway one is really hurting businesses that rely on tourists who drive along the iconic stretch. some owners have decided to close their shops until the road is fixed and tourists return. others are staying open for locals. the president of the big sur chamber of commerce, who is the owner of nepenthe restaurant, says this is a statewide issue. >> every day that continues with the road closed, we're probably going to see economic damages for the state as a whole, not just big sur, but the state in excess of $1 million a day, depending which is one of the most popular restaurants in big sur. >> is one of the businesses closed until further notice, visit california estimates a half $1 billion in economic

losses when big sur was isolated in 2017 because of a different slide. >> no deal yet to extend the a's time in oakland at the coliseum. and now the team is heading to sacramento to see if a deal could be possible there, according to the chronicle. today's meeting will include vivek ranadivé, dave, who owns the sacramento kings and the triple a baseball team, the sacramento river cats. now, if the a's do end up there in sacramento, they will be playing at sutter health park. that's where the river cats play. but it's not a sure thing. sutter health park needs some significant upgrades to meet mlb standards. the a's lease at the coliseum ends at the end of this season. their las vegas palm park isn't set to be done until 2028. now as for the discussion in oakland, the a's say the organization, the city and the county are far apart on the terms needed to agree on a possible extension. it would allow the team to play at the

coliseum after the season is done. the deal included a five year extension with an opt out clause after three years. they also discussed how the team would share the coliseum with the soccer teams, the roots and the soul. the city reportedly asked the a's to pay for the field conversion costs. >> when people say every vote counts, the district 16 congressional race is why former san jose mayor sam liccardo is moving to the november general election. we've known that since election day, but his opponent is still to be determined. more than four weeks after the march primary, a single vote is now separating joe simitian and evan lo. a final vote counts expected this week after a critical deadline for ballots passed yesterday. here's abc7 news reporter zach fuentes, the last day to cure any ballots that were out there that weren't they weren't signed or the signatures didn't match. >> election officials say voters have had weeks to fix or cure their ballots. >> we send them multiple letters, emails, texts. however, we can get a hold of the voters

so we could tell them, like why their ballot isn't counted yet and they can come in and cure it. that's what the ballot process is, where they can come fix it or sign something saying, yes, this is my signature. >> in santa clara county, many people have taken officials up on the offer. in total, they were nearly 1500 challenge ballots that needed to be fixed by deadline. there are around 500. san mateo county reported just over 400 before deadline, each number significant as they could be the final votes that decide the close race for second in the california congressional district, 16 race candidate and former san jose mayor sam liccardo is in first place by a long shot, but who is opponent will be is unclear. santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and state assembly member evan low have been back and forth in the second place spot. simitian sent us a statement tuesday that said, in part, the election offices in both counties have been verifying voter signatures over the past few weeks to make sure that every vote that can be counted will be counted right now, we're waiting to hear from them. lo's team said they will make a statement after the county certify the election. the counties will issue those final

results on april 4th. after that, the secretary of state will then certify the results on april 12th. now, in the final stretch of counting, officials say this race serves as an important reminder. >> we like to say every single vote counts, right? we want to make sure that every voter knows they make a difference in every election. >> zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thanks, zach. 509. this morning we're taking a look at live doppler seven along satellite because cooler, cloudier changes are on the way. high pressure is now in southern california. this cold front is going to move through later on this afternoon. you're going to notice the cooler air. but also the winds are going to pick up this afternoon. it's a blustery day out there. not the greatest hair day. here's your morning drive. there's a lot of cloud cover out there this morning. it's a mix of sun and clouds all morning long. we're dry today, but showers are back in the forecast here tomorrow. here's a look at those wind speeds. you'll notice those fierce winds out of the northeast, gusting anywhere from about 20 to 35mph. it's just dragging in some much cooler air. so we're saying bye bye to that mild weather we had yesterday and the day before.

controversy over proposed renaming the metropolitan oakland international airport wants to change its formal name to san francisco bay. oakland international airport. we've learned that san francisco's board of supervisors plans to introduce a resolution opposing the proposed name change. sfo officials sent a letter asking that the proposal be scrapped because it could cause potential confusion for travelers. however, several east bay business group representatives say they support the name change. visit oakland released a statement that says, in part, this change will increase online search visibility for okay! and in turn bring more visitors to oakland port commissioners will vote on the proposed name modifications april 11th. >> this morning, millions of americans cleaning up after dangerous tornadoes and powerful winds. reporter jenn sullivan is tracking the severe storms and has details on the damage the system has already caused. >> winds so powerful this student knocked to the ground at

the university of kentucky. the winds tearing down power lines. trees crushing cars in this lexington neighborhood. an ef one tornado flattening this building in nelson county, kentucky. >> lexington did suffer significant damage this morning with trees down, roads blocked, traffic signals out. >> with more storms on the way, all of the bluegrass state now under a state of emergency, more than 75 million americans from the gulf coast up through the northeast impacted by severe weather and tornadoes tuesday. parts of kentucky, indiana and ohio facing the highest risk. >> this is a dangerous period of time, the same system already tearing through parts of the midwest, bringing tornadoes, damaging winds, flooding and hail strong enough to break through this cars glass in indiana. >> in chesterfield, missouri, a tornado uprooting trees, these branches piercing through one family's roof and through their kitchen ceiling. we could see through the windows in the

basement that something big had come down. the heavy rains triggering flash flooding. several vehicles under water in rock hill, missouri, rescue crews wading through the water and using a boat to save a stranded driver. >> the water comes up so fast that he got stranded in there, so we had to rescue him by boat. >> the severe spring storms not over yet. parts of the midwest and great lakes could see a foot of snow by thursday, while much of the northeast and south will see heavy rain. i'm jenn sullivan, reporting. >> have you ever seen a plane being hit by lightning. >> well you're seeing it here in this video captured saturday afternoon between south san jose and morgan hill. our viewer william justo, says he couldn't believe his timing when he started recording the storm and caught the exact moment. according to the national weather service, commercial passenger planes can expect to be hit by lightning. an average of 1 or 2 times a year. please

don't let me be on it, people living in southern california are trying to understand a different aerial mystery. it involves something streaking across the sky early yesterday morning. >> that is so cool. >> what am i seeing. >> dozens reported these mysterious lights in the sky over temecula orange county, los angeles and beyond. now some are speculating that it was debris from the space x rocket that took off from vandenberg space force base on monday night. uh- vandenberg space base, i should say. why don't i just say vandenberg space force base? that's right. i'm still not used to space force being a thing. >> i know it is. >> also a chinese spacecraft was was predicted to reenter the planet's atmosphere near la. so far, there's been no official word on exactly what everyone saw. but we are just five away from the first total solar eclipse in north america in seven years. >> so people all the way you can

see here on the path of totality from texas to maine, getting ready. and for everyone staying here in the bay area, we're only going to be getting a partial view. and that will happen between 10 and 1145 in the morning. now, if you want to take in the eclipse, but you don't have those special glasses, you do have time to go get some or ucsf. ucsf astronomy professor andrew fraknoi is giving us an interesting alternative. >> here's what you do. stand with your back to the sun. bring a household calendar and hold it over your shoulder so that the holes in it are pointing toward the sun, but you're not looking at the sun. and look at the shadow that the calendar makes on the sidewalk in that shadow. each hole in the calendar will act like a pinhole projector, and you'll see lots of images of the eclipsed sun in the shadow.

number seven, presale tickets for outside lands go on sale at ten this morning. >> the three day music festival returns to golden gate park on august 9th. three people now face charges for burglaries around the oakland estuary. it's part of the city's increased focus to crack down on crime around the harbor. oakland police say the people arrested were living on boats in the middle of the water, and they say they stole from nearby businesses. permanent anchoring in the estuary is not allowed, but as you can see, there's still people doing it. abc seven spoke with a former harbor master. >> what's most important going forward is that the city of oakland and the new police chief, floyd mitchell, understands that the estuary is worth protecting. >> crime has plagued the oakland estuary. last year, the coast guard was brought in to stop pirates who were stealing from boats and then sinking them. some of those sunken boats are

still there. if you're a parent, you already know this college is getting more expensive this year, and now there is an added challenge when it comes to getting financial aid. some private colleges and universities are charging nearly $100,000 a year for tuition, housing, meals and other expenses. and this year, technical glitches with the fafsa from have left millions of students waiting to hear how much money and aid they will be receiving. >> the fafsa form was not available in october, as promised. instead end of december and at the end of december, it didn't work particularly well. there were a number of occurrences of crashing, and it needed to be revised for january in response. >> some colleges are now pushing deadlines for acceptance and enrollment deposits. it's not clear when the processing backlog will ease up.

the moment a powerful and deadly earthquake struck the island of taiwan. this was shot by a youtuber known as proxy inside of his apartment in taichung city, which is about 80 miles south of the epicenter. the >> this one was by far the biggest one, the most violent one. it's still kind of happening. like my apartment shakes from the aftershock every 20 minutes or so. seeing how the locals react to it made me feel a lot more comfortable. a lot of people just sort of walked out of their buildings and checked on their neighbors and made sure everyone was okay, and that kind of made me feel a lot more calm. but definitely as it was happening, i was like, oh man in the zone. >> but most people get used to the smaller one, the bigger ones. of course, it's scary. >> now, passengers arriving on a flight from taiwan at sfo last night were in the air when the quake happened, receiving messages from friends and family, though they said earthquakes are common so they thought most people are
