major close call at an airport, an airliner coming dangerously close to the air traffic control tower. >> it happened in bad weather, similar to the powerful storm that's been slamming much of the eastern u.s. in the last 24 hours, leading to widespread travel delays. >> the latest on the current storm in a moment. but first, that scare at a major airport just now, coming to light this morning, federal aviation investigators are looking into another close call. this time involving a southwest flight that appeared to nearly crash into a control tower at one of the nation's busiest airports around. >> go around heading coming in 2005. maintain 2000 2000. >> the incident taking place at new york's laguardia airport late last month. the faa says severe weather, including high wind shear, forced a plane to veer off course while landing on its second attempt. the flight path shows the plane coming extremely close to the control tower. the faa, now investigating whether the plane

actually flew over the tower, an air traffic controller told the pilot the plane was not aligned with the runway. >> he was stuck east of the final. he was not going to land the runway. >> in a more recent air scare in bad weather, a passenger and a flight attendant were injured on a southwest flight yesterday when the plane hit severe turbulence over the gulf of mexico. >> was the crew member in the cockpit or in the back center? the flight attendant was in the back, you said yes. >> the orlando bound flight made an emergency landing in tampa. more than 1000 flights have been canceled in the last 24 hours, as millions of americans faced a severe weather threat. the storms bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the midwest, south and the northeast. in delaware, a woman and four children were rescued from this submerged car. outside philadelphia, a woman was killed when a tree crushed her car. >> fire department had the jaws of life, and they were trying to cut the driver out of the car. >> at least 28 tornadoes were

reported across nine states. one person was killed in kentucky and in georgia. a twister packing winds of 150mph, causing this damage outside atlanta. those storms now bringing freezing rain and up to three feet of snow to parts of new england. we'll check your forecast in just a few minutes. >> breaking overnight at least six miners trapped after yesterday's deadly earthquake in taiwan have now been rescued, but dozens of people are still unaccounted for after the 7.4 magnitude quake. nearly 50 residential buildings have collapsed. the death toll overnight stood at nine people, with more than 1000 injured. new video shows the quake hitting during rush hour, trapping drivers on a swaying bridge, and video circulating online shows boulders from a landslide crashing into at least one car on this road. two people were reportedly killed in the area. part of the road collapsed. meanwhile, in one hospital, nurses were seen holding onto newborn babies during the intense shaking. it was the biggest quake in taiwan in 25

years. >> outrage is growing after an israeli airstrike killed seven aid workers in gaza. president biden is scheduled to speak today with israel's prime minister and the celebrity chef, who founded the aid group, claims israel targeted his workers. the group now demanding an independent investigation into the airstrike. abc's christiane cordero has the latest on this. good morning. >> lionel. good morning. yeah. israel appears to be facing more isolation as international criticism of the war in gaza grows. this morning, the list of israel's allies condemning the deadly airstrike on seven aid workers in gaza is growing. poland's prime minister calling it a tragic attack. australia saying his country is outraged and the british prime minister calls the attack appalling. president biden is expected to speak with prime minister benjamin netanyahu today for the first time since monday's attack. the world central kitchen workers and american, three british nationals and australian, a polish national and a palestinian driver, were traveling in a caravan when it

was attacked. their vehicles, clearly branded with the food relief organizations logo. >> very colorful logo that we are obviously very proud of. >> chef jose andres, founder of world central kitchen, claims the group was targeted and so this was not used, bad luck and situation where oops, we dropped the bomb in the wrong place. they were targeted systems, car by car. >> prime minister netanyahu's foreign policy advisor insists the attack was not intentional. >> what is the tragedy, in the fog of this war, we've lost a number of soldiers, a number of idf soldiers to friendly fire. and unfortunately, seven, humanitarian aid workers were lost yesterday to friendly fire. >> meanwhile, netanyahu is now calling up reservists for israel's air defense system after iran vowed to retaliate for an airstrike on its consulate in syria monday, which killed two iranian generals. iran's supreme leader today warning with god's help, we will make the zionists repent of

their crime of aggression against the iranian consulate in damascus, the top u.s. air force official in the middle east is sharing growing concerns about tensions in the region, saying the war in gaza is a destabilizing effect and it allows malign actors like the iranians to take advantage of that situation. an as for humanitarian aid in gaza, at least two more organizations have now suspended operations. andrea. >> christiane. thank you. police in oklahoma say they now believe two women reported missing last weekend were likely the victims of foul play. investigators say veronica butler and jillian kelly were supposed to pick up their children, but never made it. their blue kia was found nowhere near the pickup location. instead, it was abandoned in a rural part of texas county near the kansas border. investigators say they found no sign of the missing women. they did not comment about a reported custody dispute involving butler, prosecutor in michigan are recommending a 10 to 15 year prison sentence for jennifer and james crumbley. >> they're the parents of the

oxford high school school shooter convicted of involuntary manslaughter for ignoring their son's mental health and helping him get access to a gun for students were killed. the crumbleys will be sentenced next week. their lawyers have not commented on the prosecutor's recommendation. >> we turn now to final preparations for monday's historic solar eclipse. some schools are closing early. indiana has declared an emergency because of the crowds expected. some prison inmates are suing to get the chance to go outside and everyone is asking, will the weather cooperate? with just over four days to go, communities across the u.s. are over the moon. about the total solar eclipse, the first of its kind in the u.s. since 2017. look how dark it is, how quiet it is. some schools are canceling classes, while others in the eclipse's path plan, some out of this world lessons. in detroit, students will release a weather balloon to document the event. indiana's butler university is recording the sun's corona using these special telescopes in upstate new york, elementary

schools have created special curriculums to help kids understand the eclipse. >> students need to know the why behind the experiences in our lives, from schools to prisons. >> some new york inmates are suing the department of corrections for preventing them from watching the cosmic event, claiming their religious rights are being violated. one of the inmates saying, i don't believe that just because i am incarcerated that i should be denied this opportunity, especially when this eclipse is scheduled to happen during normal outside recreation time. the department of corrections says the lockdown is intended to ensure the safety of inmates and staff. >> it's really rare that we get to have a shared collective experience. >> despite the anticipation, meteorologists warn. severe storms are possible monday for parts of the southern plains and the lower mississippi valley, potentially blocking the view. >> we might not see it through parts of the south. the reason for that is a storm system coming out of the west that will stir up some showers and thunderstorms, especially as we head through the later part of

attack. her friends tell our affiliate kstp. the trip was supposed to be her last big adventure. >> she was going to be 80 and she felt like she would start slowing down. to be honest, i don't know. she'd slowed down or not, but at least she wouldn't be traveling as far, i probably. >> the safari company calls it a tragic event and says it's cooperating with investigators. it comes just weeks after this scare in south africa. an elephant lifted a safari vehicle several feet in the air, twice dropping the truck. no one was injured in that incident. >> hard to watch that video. this morning. a mystery in california. up to $30 million in cash has reportedly been stolen in los angeles in a crime that could be record breaking. but the question now who is responsible? here's abc's derrick dennis this morning. burglars have gotten away with tens of millions of dollars in what's being called one of los angeles largest cash heists in history. >> sources say the lapd and fbi

are investigating the easter sunday theft at a money storage facility in the neighborhood of sylmar in the san fernando valley. the brazen burglars were able to breach the building by entering through the roof to gain access to the vault without setting off alarms. the company that owns the building, not realizing the crime until monday morning. the facility handles and stores cash from businesses across the region. it's not the first time in recent memory california has seen a brazen heist in 2022, $100 million in jewels were stolen from this brinks tractor trailer at a remote rest stop north of la, in what could be the largest jewelry heist in us history. >> this isn't lifestyle of the rich and famous. these are mom and pop jewelers. i have a client 66 years old. he lost everything in this theft. >> but in terms of cold, hard cash, this heist on sunday appears more similar to a 1997 heist at the dunbar armored facility in los angeles. $18 million was stolen in a robbery adjusted for inflation, it would top $35 million today. so far,
