perfectly between the earth and the sun. 15 states are in the path of totality. taking a look at the map here, take a close look where more than 30 million people live in the places where the sun will be 100% covered. here in the bay area, we're at 34. with the eclipse expected to begin at about 10:11 a.m. tonight, it is the final rush for people traveling to eclipse hot spots. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone talked to locals traveling thousands of miles across the country in search of the perfect view. >> i'm a photographer from the bay area. i live in the east bay and brentwood. >> yeah, so i live in concord, uh- so it was a flight out of oakland. >> i am chris, this is my wife, leslie. we're from the bay area, hayward, california. >> all of these bay area residents have made their way to other parts of the united states, where the excitement is also high, and they hope to see the total solar eclipse on monday. we'll start with mike oria, who's already driven more

than 300 miles across texas, and check out his trunk. yes, he's living out of his car for this event, trying to find the best spot because of the fluid nature of chasing the weather, you really can't book any make any solid plans like that. >> so i have been uh- without a without running water or a toothbrush since uh- early yesterday morning. >> this is the location in terrell, texas that he has settled on pending any change in the weather. if mike gets a clear shot of the sky, he'll likely be able to file away some of his past pictures of partial eclipses in the bay area and replace them with new total solar eclipse ones down the road in austin, texas. our hayward's mr. and mrs. failing. what is the forecast look like there come tomorrow. not the best >> so right now it's showing us that there's going to be thunderstorms throughout the day. but but, we're heading a

bit west to lake travis and finally up in ohio, concord's mike zeigler. >> so flew out of oakland, connected in chicago and then flew into cleveland and then drove from cleveland down. so it's about an hour and a half drive. >> and he drove through this wintry mix to get to niles, ohio, now. and warren, ohio, monday. >> you're just short of the apocalypse. >> some people will say, oh, it's you know, the space geeks get right into this. and i didn't know if you consider yourself a space geek. >> no. not really. for me, it's definitely the once in a lifetime opportunity that life changing experience echoed by all these groups. >> the failings experienced the 2017 solar eclipse in oregon with their kids and believe a moment like that with friends will be equally as special. >> it was just such a visually life changing moment that everybody else was sold on us. one having a vacation together and two, why not see the eclipse at the same time? >> but as long as during our four minutes of totality

tomorrow we have something clear above, then we'll be looking good. jr stone, abc seven news. >> love everyone's journey now, even without totality, people here in the bay area will still have an exciting view tomorrow. ahead at 1130, we'll bring you to some of the bay area's eclipse hot spots from the big viewing parties to places off the beaten path. all right, bringing in abc seven news, spencer christian with a special eclipse edition of the accuweather forecast. i think we all just want to know, can we see it? >> we'll be able to see it. and as you put it so well, even without totality, it's an exciting event here. now here's a nighttime view just to show you how clear the skies are already from mount tam, we can not only see san francisco and the bay bridge, but we can see parts of oakland. so those clear skies will last into the morning and throughout the day. tomorrow it will be sunny and bright. we will certainly have a good viewing conditions. by the way, nice warm up there in the middle of the day. as you can tell

after a chilly start to the morning. so let's take a look at the solar eclipse and that path of totality about which you've heard so much. it runs through the central part of the us and up to the northeast, from texas, through the mid-mississippi valley into the eastern great lakes and new england. however, even though we're not anywhere near that path, we'll see about 34% of the sun eclipsed tomorrow and the viewing conditions will be absolutely perfect here. so maybe that's better than being in a place where we they get totality. but they have clouds. >> good way to put it. yeah. >> so i'm trying to encourage our viewers about our partial cloudy. >> all right. we'll check in with you a little bit later okay . well moving on. in the east bay, police are searching for a driver who crashed on the highway, killing a nine year-old girl. the driver was heading north on interstate 680 in concord at about five this morning, when he veered off the road and flipped over several times. chp says some passengers weren't wearing seat belts. the force of that crash threw several people from the car. the nine year-old died on the scene. four other women went to the hospital. investigators say the

30 year old man behind the wheel ran away after the crash. chp is trying to figure out what exactly caused that collision new details in that wild sideshow that shut down traffic on the bay bridge overnight. the dangerous driving took over the westbound lanes before treasure island at about three. the chp tells us about 100 cars took part in the sideshow. as you can see, crowds gathered to watch some, even setting off fireworks . witnesses say it lasted about 20 minutes, and the chp says it towed two cars and detained four people. police in oakland are increasing patrols on the weekends to try to deter sideshows, as opd says drivers caught participating can have their cars towed and held for a month. well, tonight marks six months since the surprise attack that set off the israel-hamas war. thousands took to the streets in israel to demand the

release of hostages taken by hamas on october 7th. palestinian officials say more than 33,000 people have died in gaza since the fighting started. this is now israel's longest war in more than 40 years, with no end in sight. negotiations for a cease fire and the release of hostages picked up again today in cairo. it's what people in the bay area with loved ones held hostage have been praying for. abc seven news reporter tara campbell takes us to today's vigil atop an overpass in lafayette, california. >> a message to the middle east. bring them home. >> we need them home. >> sunday, marking six months since october 7th and the hamas attack on israel, killing more than 1200 people and taking more than 250 hostage. this is your guy. >> he's my brother in law. it's very dear to my heart. >> sunday afternoon, bay area loved ones bringing attention to the 134 hostages still held captive in gaza. >> i think the most important thing to do is to continue to

speak about the hostages, bring them up in every conversation, raise awareness to the hostages, describing every day for the past six months as a difficult one. it's really hard to get out of bed every time i open my eyes. the first thing i do is check the news to see maybe there was a deal while i was sleeping. >> whatever little bit we can do here all the way in lafayette, california, helps. you know, we again, we magnify it. so a lot of more people know about the hostages and hopefully join us in just shouting, yelling, asking for them to be released. >> i still remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i, when i learned about the october 7th uh- attack, state senator scott wiener is co-chair of the california legislative jewish caucus. now, there were exactly six months in uh- that trauma is still very real for jews around the world, and he's joining the voices calling for the return of the hostages and

an end to the war. this war needs to end. the hostages need to come home. hamas needs to no longer be running gaza. and we need to find a way to have peace. >> i have to believe that there are going to come home, that there are going to be. i don't know if they'll ever be whole, but they're going to come home. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the biden administration took its sharpest tone yet with israel this week after airstrikes killed seven food aid workers in gaza. president biden told israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, future u.s. support depends on protections for civilians and aid workers, and said an immediate cease fire is essential. it's a step toward what pro-palestinian activists in the bay area have pushed for months. >> people are really starting to rise up in the masses to say, we have seen enough of the way in which israel has desecrated the palestinian community, has desecrated palestinian culture.

>> netanyahu's office says the israeli government is taking immediate steps to send more humanitarian aid into gaza. time now for our abc7 news at 11 advancer, helping you get ahead on the headlines in the days to come. first, a milestone for the decade long project to relieve congestion on highway 101 at the novato narrows. starting thursday, traffic will be shifted to allow the next phase of construction to begin. that means southbound traffic from olive avenue and san antonio road will be realigned off the temporary median lanes and onto the newly constructed roadway. northbound traffic will be shifted to those temporary lanes, so the old northbound lanes can be reconstructed. caltrans says the exact timing of the shift and nighttime ramp closures, those will be announced in the coming days. the project is expected to be finished by summer of 2025. our second abc seven news at 11 advancer, is a sign of the growing battle in our libraries. the american library association

says more books are being targeted for censorship than ever before. tomorrow, the group will share the top ten books people tried to ban from libraries last year, according to the ala book bans in california are up more than 60% from 2022 to 23. nearly half of the books targeted represented lgbtq or bipoc voices. and our final answer tonight. net neutrality is back in the headlines. and the bay area is a big part of the conversation. tomorrow, the chairwoman of the fcc is visiting the south bay to discuss this month's vote to restore net neutrality. the rules ban internet service providers from blocking or throttling online traffic. the fcc ended net neutrality during the trump administration. california passed its own set of rules to keep all internet traffic equal. tomorrow's roundtable will include the santa clara county fire department. their internet access was throttled during wildfires in 2018. another plane

plane's engine just ripped off mid-flight. the good news? they turned around and landed safely. it's just the latest in a string of mechanical issues on board. boeing planes this year, now drawing increased scrutiny from federal investigators. the faa says an engine cover on the jet just fell off and smacked the wing shortly after takeoff in denver. the flight was bound for houston, southwest says no one was hurt and that it is reviewing maintenance records for the plane. the faa will investigate the incident. renters and concord held a car caravan this afternoon in support of rent control. they would have already had it, but the city's plan is now on hold. it was set to kick in this month, capping rent increases at 3% each year for people living in apartments built before 1995. last month, though, a group submitted plans for a referendum on the plan, forcing the city to put rent relief on pause. >> unfortunately, that has been put on hold by real estate interest groups. wealthy real

estate groups and rents keep going up. salaries don't go up. people are struggling to buy food. >> medicine petitioners have to collect 7200 signatures to get the city council to reconsider. city leaders will then have the choice of repealing the ordinance, or putting it on the november ballot to let voters decide, the california apartments association told us. it's not part of the petition, but it opposes rent control. new at 11 transit leaders in san mateo county are trying to cut off an alarming trend. rising attacks on bus drivers have samtrans cracking down, the transit agency says assaults on bus drivers more than tripled last year, compared to 2022. only 14 total. but it is concerning enough that samtrans is making changes. this past week, the board of directors approved a new code of conduct that could ban people for life if they attack a driver. >> we want to make sure that we are communicating with our public what our expectations are so that we can mitigate or

minimize any of these kinds of instances nationwide, the federal government says attacks on transit workers quadrupled since 2009. >> pretty soon, uber eats customers in phoenix, arizona, will have a new way to get their food. robo taxis san francisco based robo taxi service waymo will now deliver orders as part of a multiyear deal. uber eats has partnered with robot services to deliver in other pilot programs, but this is the first time using waymo. uber users will have a choice of having their food delivered by a person or automated vehicle. the new service rolls out on wednesday, one week after burglars pulled off one of the country's biggest ever cash heists. investigators still haven't found the money. investigators say thieves broke into a money storage facility in los angeles and made off with $30 million, police told the la times. the burglars broke in through the roof on easter sunday, then cracked a safe

holding bricks of cash. the company didn't find out about the theft until the next day. security experts say it likely would have taken a large crew with months of planning and inside knowledge to pull this off, simply moving the money would be tough. $30 million worth of bills could weigh more than three tons. i predict this is going to be a hollywood movie someday. >> stunning story. yeah my gosh. yeah, it'll probably be a movie. you're right. >> very ocean's 11 like. yeah, exactly. >> exactly. well, movie the movie the weather is an exciting isn't as exciting as that story. but that's a good thing, though. >> yes, we'll take it. >> we like calm weather. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image. high pressure building in from our south. it will be the controlling factor in our weather for the next few days. earlier this evening we had really strong wind gusts right now the wind is generally calm, but we've got some gusty conditions down around half moon bay right now and the 24 hour temperature change shows it's about two, three, maybe even four degrees warmer generally across the region than it was at

this time. last night. so let's take a closer look. san francisco 52 degrees and we have low 50s also at oakland hayward, san jose, san mateo and half moon bay. checking on temperature readings up in the north and to our east is 51 at santa rosa right now, mid to upper 40s at petaluma. napa only 42 at fairfield and low 50s at concord and livermore. and let's check out our forecast features right now. tomorrow is eclipse day. clear skies, great viewing conditions. tuesday through thursday. we expect sunny and much warmer weather. temperatures are going to soar during the mid week days, and by the end of the week it'll be turning sharply cooler. cooler again, which is typical of bay area weather changing from one extreme to the other overnight. mainly clear skies, low temperatures, generally in the low to mid 40s, but a little bit chillier in the far north where lows will drop into the mid to upper 30s. and as far as the solar eclipse is concerned tomorrow, that path of totality, about which you've heard so much, runs from texas up through the mid-mississippi valley into the eastern great lakes and into new england. so that's where the total eclipse will be seen, given viewing conditions that

are favorable. but here in the bay area, we'll have favorable viewing conditions, but only about 30% or 34% of totality will be visible to us. but we'll we'll have great weather tomorrow. sunny skies and high temperatures climbing into the upper 60s to about 70 around the bay shoreline and mainly low to mid 70s in our inland areas. so nice. mild day tomorrow and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. more mild to warm weather is coming our way. tuesday wednesday and thursday especially. we'll see high temperatures in the low 80s inland, up to about 80 around the bay shoreline and nearly 70 on the coast those two days. then on friday, it turns sharply cooler by about 12 to 14 degrees in some locations, and temperatures won't begin to rebound until next sunday. >> i spent part of your forecast thinking how i could incorporate total eclipse of the heart into a pun. >> that great song. >> yeah, love that song, but i couldn't. maybe you can think of something better. >> i'll give it some thought. okay. oh, sorry. >> thanks, spencer.

of the bay area's best places to watch tomorrow's solar show. >> super festive atmosphere in junction, texas, where physicist doctor desiree whitmore from san francisco's exploratorium is getting ready to watch the sun vanish. this is my very first total solar eclipse, and i'm kind of losing my mind a little bit because i just can't. >> i have a lot of energy. >> doctor whitmore and her staff will broadcast live from texas on the exploratorium's website and youtube channel during the eclipse, starting at 10:45 a.m. pacific time. texas, one of 13 states which will experience totality about four minutes of darkness. >> i just can't wait. it's going to get dark and cold and the light's going to be weird, and i'm just going to be surrounded by amazing humans that are just as curious as i am. >> exploratorium visitors can watch the eclipse broadcast from texas and mexico, although the bay area will see only a partial eclipse. you'll need safety

glasses, and that eyewear is going fast at the exploratorium store. how many eclipse glasses have you sold? do you know? >> yeah, we've been selling for weeks now, about 100 a day. we're down to our like, very last stock. >> samantha says make sure the glasses you buy are legit and have the iso certified seal. if you don't have safety glasses, i would say you can do things like observe shadows. >> so you can punch holes in cards. you can use a colander or like a slotted spoon in the north bay. >> experts are recommending some wide open spaces for ideal eclipse viewing, like lagoon park here in san rafael. >> unobstructed views that look out towards the marsh and marin county parks. >> ranger ian mcclurg says the spot near the civic center is accessible by smart train and bus. >> i'm excited. i, you know, i think it's a unique opportunity to get outside and to see something different, see natural phenomenon. >> carla kvamme says she wouldn't miss it. >> absolutely. i plan to see it.

tomorrow morning. today, an important step toward the full reopening of one of the nation's main shipping lanes. crews started removing containers from the deck of the cargo ship that crashed into the francis scott key bridge in baltimore. work will continue this week as the weather permits. the crew of the ship has been stuck there this entire time, but this week's work could allow them to finally leave. the governor of maryland says fully reopening the channel, leading to baltimore's port by the end of may is an aggressive but realistic timeline. now, there's been a major breakthrough in washington for setting a national standard for protecting your online privacy. today key federal lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan proposal that would give consumers broad rights to control how tech companies use their personal data. it would require companies to gather only as much information as they need to advertise specific products to consumers. that proposal is

san francisco, silicon valley trying to raise my venture fund, backstage capital hamilton spent countless nights living inside sfo. i would talk to my mom. i would talk to my aunt kotil, and i would just it would just suck. >> by day, she would be busy with meetings in silicon valley, hopeful that she would crack into the venture capital industry dominated by white men. by night, she would pack those dreams back into her carry on bag and come back to sfo to make her home for the evening. >> so i would take a pair of the jeans out, i would roll it up and i would lay it on the on the floor and that would be my pillow. but i wouldn't stay in one place too long. and i always thought i might wake up to someone tapping me on the shoulder saying, hey, get up and leave. thankfully, that never happened today. >> those sleepless nights feel like a distant memory for hamilton, who is wildly successful as a venture capitalist. >> arlan hamilton, arlan hamilton island, hamilton, arlan

hamilton wants to get you to your first million dollars. >> i essentially launched backstage capital while i was homeless. that's the simplest way of saying it. >> hamilton's company, backstage capital, has raised $30 million since 2015, and with that money, she's invested in 200 startups. she's providing a life changing investment to the folks that are so often overlooked. >> what would happen if there were a venture fund where everyone who was a woman starting a company, or a black person starting a company or latinx, etc. they all knew that they could go there and have a fair chance. could that change everything? so i set out to start backstage capital, and it was a woman who made the first investment in hamilton. she said to me, i don't know what you're going to do, but i know you're going to do something really important. so i'm going to give you $50,000. she gave me $25,000 to invest in someone else to
