april 8th. >> from abc news in new york this is america this morning. >> good morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good monday morning i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the total solar eclipse captivating the country. 15 states are in the path of totality today from texas all the way up to maine. >> and millions of sky watchers are hoping for a great view as the moon slips between the earth and the sun, turning daylight into darkness. >> i am over the moon. i have been looking forward to this for months. >> it's a moment millenniums in the making. >> we've been talking about coming here for this event since, what, three months before she was born? >> a total solar eclipse sweeping across the united states today, the last in the u.s. until 2044. and millions are flocking to cities along the path of totality. >> it's pretty wild. we have friends that are coming to meet us here from new jersey. >> the faa issuing a travel

warning through wednesday. as airports try to keep up with eclipse tourists and spring breakers returning home, train stations are packed. new york's penn station even giving out safety glasses. and there has been bumper to bumper traffic on roads, leading to cities experiencing the total eclipse. san antonio highways filling up as rental car companies run out of vehicles. >> we're fully booked right now. that's one things. so even if they call us, we don't have. >> but as excitement grows a warning new calculations show the path of totality may be slightly narrower than nasa calculated, and experts recommend heading towards the middle of that path. but even in the ideal location, cloud cover is still a concern. uncertain skies threaten to obstruct the out of this world view for many major cities. notice the areas of green showing the lower risk of cloud coverage. the areas in red a higher risk of cloud coverage. we'll take you into a couple of cities now again, little rock looking at some sunshine, as well as jonesboro here being the path of totality. also, as we look into new england, some sunshine from burlington to caribou. but

despite the potentially overcast cosmos, excitement is still sky high. >> we've been talking about it for months, but just over the past couple of weeks things have really picked up. everybody's got their plans, everybody's got their glasses. >> even though cloud cover might affect some areas, the partial eclipse will last more than an hour in many communities. so keep your eyes on the sky. and don't forget your safety glasses at count on abc news for live coverage from all along the path of totality. our coverage starts at 2 p.m. eastern. >> don't miss it. passengers on a southwest airlines flight out of denver got quite the scare, as an engine cover came apart shortly after takeoff. the plane quickly returned, making an emergency landing, and no one was hurt. but the investigations are now underway. passengers on the southwest airlines flight watched the terrifying moment play out from their windows. the engine cover of the boeing 737 800 appeared to rip off during takeoff yesterday, then strike the wing flap. >> several of us called the

flight attendant. she came over and looked at it because the pilots couldn't see any of it, and she was like, oh my god, let's go ahead and declare an emergency for southwest 3695. and, we'd like, an immediate return. we got a piece of the engine cowling hanging off. >> apparently one passenger on the houston bound flight says she felt a jolt before looking out the window, and alerting flight attendants. >> there was quite a few people who were pretty anxious saying things like, you know, keep your seatbelts tight, don't move, and brace for landing the flight. >> with the 143 people on board returned to denver to make an emergency landing. while the plane is made by boeing, the engine is not. in a statement, southwest airlines calls it a mechanical issue, says our maintenance teams are reviewing the aircraft. the faa has opened an investigation. it comes after another southwest 737 800 experienced an engine issue last week. that plane was forced to

abort takeoff in lubbock, texas, after the crew reported a possible engine fire. the faa is also looking into two southwest flights for march, which returned to their departure. airports after experiencing engine issues, turning overseas to israel, pulling most of its troops from southern gaza. >> six months into the war and the latest round of ceasefire talks in cairo is said to be making headway. abc's christiane cordero joins us now with the details. good morning christiane. >> andrew good morning. reports out of egypt say noticeable progress has been made between israel and hamas to reach a ceasefire and hostage deal. according to egyptian state news, all sides have agreed on key issues. negotiations are expected to return to cairo within two days to agree on a final deal. the return of palestinians displaced by the war continues to be a main sticking point. meanwhile israel says it is withdrawing ground troops from southern gaza in preparation for future operations, including an expected ground invasion into rafah. israel says rafah is hamas's last major stronghold, but it's also where 1.3 million displaced palestinians fled for

safety. it comes after the israeli strike that killed seven world central kitchen aid workers in gaza. the group's founder, jose andres, spoke with abc's martha raddatz. he condemned hamas's october 7th attack in israel but says he was critical of the israeli military, saying they've gone too far. >> obviously this was a targeted we could argue that the first one, let's say, was a mistake the second, the third. it's been six months of targeting anything that seems moves. this doesn't seem a war against terror. this doesn't seem any more a war about defending israel. this really, at this point, seems it's a war against humanity itself. >> israel called the strike a grave mistake, and at president biden's urging, agreed to reopen a vital port and a border crossing. andrew. all right. christiane thank you. >> the un nuclear watchdog is

condemning a new attack on ukraine's zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, saying it significantly increases the risk of an accident. russian authorities controlling the plant say it was struck by a ukrainian drone. the un confirmed several hits on the main reactor and one casualty, but officials say there was no critical damage and radiation levels are normal and mexico is going before the world court at the hague today to challenge ecuador's raid of its embassy. police in ecuador broke into the mexican embassy friday to arrest a former ecuadorian vice president who was seeking asylum there while facing corruption charges. now, ecuador is under fire from the global community accused of violating international accords back in this country. >> a helicopter pilot is recovering after his chopper went down in florida. the aircraft hit the water saturday afternoon in key biscayne. investigators say the pilot reported engine trouble shortly before the crash. witnesses say rescuers were on the scene within a minute. the pilot suffered minor injuries and ten

vehicles were involved in a crash amid high winds and blowing dust near the border of colorado and kansas. parts of interstate 70 were closed as those vehicles were cleared. wind gusts in the area reached 75mph. police at the scene said there were no serious injuries, and in western oklahoma, a raging wildfire has already burned more than 5000 acres. >> it started saturday and prompted some evacuations. here's video of it. but those orders were lifted a few hours later. two firefighters suffered burns when their vehicles were overtaken by flames. officials say no inhabited homes, though, have been lost. it is time now for a look at your monday morning weather. we have to talk about the eclipse along the path. texas will be partly cloudy, mostly cloudy with a chance of afternoon storms on the gulf coast. clouds also in the middle of the country, but mostly sunny in the midwest. partly cloudy in new york. the best viewing is expected in new england. back to the plains where tumbleweeds were blowing across the road about 150 miles east of denver, winds were

first place to see the skies go dark. >> we're back with aftershocks from friday's earthquake in the new york city area. the state's governor says there were at least 25 in the hours following the 4.8 magnitude quake. no injuries or major damage were reported. it was the region's strongest quake in 140 years.

>> meanwhile, in new york harbor, a huge cargo ship lost power over the weekend. it's now on the way to completing its journey, but the incident reminded many of what led to the baltimore disaster last month. here's abc's derrick dennis. >> this morning. another massive container ship losing power less than two weeks after the deadly bridge collapse in baltimore. pictures posted online show the 89,000 ton, 1100 foot long vessel apl qing dao anchored close to new york's verrazzano-narrows bridge. the u.s. coast guard confirms the container ship had experienced a loss of propulsion friday night as it traversed a waterway in new york harbor. three tugboats were escorting the ship, which is standard procedure for large vessels heading out into the atlantic. the tugboats were able to tow the ship until it regained propulsion, authorities note. even if the ship had come close to the bridge, the design of the bridge with protective rock islands built around its post, would have likely prevented the kind of march 26th catastrophe in baltimore, when a

container ship lost power, hitting the pillars of the francis scott key bridge, causing it to collapse and kill six construction workers who fell with the span. salvage crews have started removing the hundreds of shipping containers on board the dolly, and on friday, divers located the body of one of the four remaining construction workers. the incident in baltimore and the one in new york serving as reminders for bridge officials nationwide to be on alert. >> it is a time to go out and rethink what you have and make sure that all the inspections and all the studies have been made for the individual bridges themselves as for the ship that lost power in new york after being repaired, it was allowed to continue on its journey, headed now to norfolk, virginia. >> rhiannon. andrew. >> derek. thank you. walmart has agreed to pay $45 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming it overcharged customers for certain grocery items between october of 2018 and january of this year. customers could be eligible to receive up to $500. now, walmart
